Met releases van Devious, Vermin
en Hatred profileerde het Nederlandse Deity Down Records zich tot voor kort
vooral als leverancier van death metal, maar met het tekenen van het eveneens
Nederlandse Dark Intentions waagt het label zich nu ook aan metalcore. Dark
Intentions werd in 2003 opgericht in Breda. Na de demo ‘Survival Is Not An
Option’ (2004) en de MCD ‘Remorse Will Die Today’ (2005) is het viertal nu
klaar voor het echte werk en levert met ‘Destined To Burn’ zijn eerste
full-length af.
Dark Intentions komt goed beslagen
ten ijs en overdondert op zijn debuut met heerlijk ruige, opgethrashte hardcore,
vol potige breakdowns. De muziek is simpel van opzet, maar juist daarom erg
effectief. Met het gaspedaal diep ingetrapt (‘Suffer Severe’, ‘Whispers’) is
het viertal op z’n gevaarlijkst. Geloof me, Dark Intentions laat op ‘Destined
To Burn’ werkelijk niets nieuws horen. Maar met een ijzeren wil,
vastberadenheid en vooral een stel aanstekelijke nummers kun je het ook ver
schoppen, dat blijkt maar weer.
Voor de opnames reisde de band
naar de Belgische Artsound Studio, waar de heren Jean-Pierre Kerkhofs en Stefan
van Neerven (voorheen gitarist van Born From Pain) de band van een vette
productie hebben voorzien. En om niets aan het toeval over te laten werd voor
de mastering de hulp ingeroepen van Alan Douches (o.a. Sepultura, Sick Of It
All). Geen halve maatregelen dus, maar het was de moeite waard. Met ‘Destined
To Burn’ levert Dark Intentions namelijk een heel aardig visitekaartje af.

Dark Intentions komt uit Breda en
maakt metalcore met wat standaard trash metal en New York hardcore invloeden.
In elk geval klinkt de combinatie (die niet erg verfrissend is, maar dat blijft
bijzonder lastig) op Destined to Burn best lekker.
De vaart zit er bijna het hele
album lekker in, waarbij men een vrij donker sfeertje neerzet dat het wel goed
doet bij mij. Daarbij heeft de band het album met 28 minuten net iets te lang
gemaakt, want door het gebrek aan diversiteit gaan de nummers na een tijdje
toch een beetje vervelen. Echt duidelijke fillers staan er niet op, maar een
aantal nummers ontstijgen de middelmaat niet. Daarom vind ik het jammer dat men
gekozen heeft voor "Suffer Severe" als openingsnummer (daarvoor zit
een intro die ook al niet te boeiend is), aangezien dit juist één van de minste
nummers is, te veel clichés. Het tweede nummer, "The Murder", neemt
wat gas terug en juist hierin laat Dark Intentions zich van een betere kant
horen. Juist dit soort nummers zijn de betere op Destined to Burn, nummers die
niet per sé naar een beatdown toe werken. Af en toe een solo ertussendoor zorgt
ook voor het verbeteren van de kwaliteiten van deze band.
Het pluspunt dat ik expliciet wil vermelden
is de zang van Martijn. Ik ben altijd groot fan geweest van Instil, mede door
de vocale stunts die men daar uithaalde en Dark Intentions komt daar dicht bij
in de buurt. Ook teksten schrijven kan de band wel redelijk.
Voor een eerste full-lenght klinkt
dit zeker niet slecht, zeker in een genre waarin de bands alle paddenstoelen
uit de grond schieten. Als je ook graag metalcore luistert zonder daarbij
constant te mekkeren over de mosh langs komen brengen zou ik Dark Intentions
zeker een kans geven.

At first impression, just
referring to the front cover design, LP's title or band's name, I thought my
dear postman brought me a dark Metal CD from No Man's Land. Next time I'll be
wise enough not to be fooled by appearances. Let's have a view on the content
of their first release. Musically, Dark Intentions (initially formed in 2002)
plays kind of intense metal, resulting in heavy and slow rhythms in a modern
metal/hardcore way. I won't describe Destined to Burn as PURE hardcore and
won't affiliate this with the punk scene. However, hardcore and punk influences
plus a dose of thrash metal are undeniably recognizable in the music.
The riffs are nice but aren't
really impressive. "Suffer Severe" has regular speed drumming and
strong bass playing, [but] songs like "Vengeance" don't get my
attention. "It Dies Today," "Whispers," and "The
Murder," have a very heavy mid-tempo groove, [though] "It Dies
Today" sounds a bit repetitive. "Today is the Day" and
"Untouched" are among the most aggresive ones.
The highlight track is the tenth
"When Past And Present Collide," good enough to be included in the
band's live setlist. Don't expect much to listen [if you expect] something
original, if so... this CD might not be your first choice. There's no gimmick
at all, no solo (except a suspicion on "Holy Words"), neither complicated
or fast or unnecessary riffing. Forget about the "tough guy" touch.
An average piece of brutality.

Veel goeds zijn deze Bredanaars niet
van plan. Tenminste als je je band Dark Intentions noemt en je debuutplaat
Destined To Burn heet dan kan je een geloof, hoop en liefdeplaat wel op je buik
schrijven. Dark Intentions doet het licht uit en wat men daarna in het donker
aantreft is niet geschikt voor de weekhartigen onder ons. In het schemergebied
tussen metal en hardcore bouwt de band aan zijn eigen evil empire door middel
van compacte songs, hapklare brokken agressie en verwrongen melodieën. Het zit
allemaal verdomd knap in elkaar waardoor Destined To Burn een plaat is geworden
die ik in mijn donkerste momenten zeker nog eens de revue laat passeren, al
weet ik bij voorbaat dat de plaat mij steeds dieper zal laten zinken. Voorlopig
liever even wat muziek waar in ieder geval een sprankje hoop waarneembaar is.

Ahja, Bollermosh-Core aus Holland
mal wieder. Mit allen gewöhnlichen Trademarks, kämpferisch wie eh und je. Die
Hardcore-Surrogate von DARK INTENTIONS proben den Aufstand der Unbeugsamen
gegen das Establishment. Neu sind weder Feindbild noch die Verpackung im Stile
von BORN FROM PAIN und Konsorten. Auch vor plakativer Phrasendrescherei sind
die Texte nicht gefeit. Sie scheinen wie von der Mikrowelle erhitzt, ohne wahre
Leidenschaft. Darüber soll hinweggesehen werden, weil "Destined To
Burn" nicht so stumpf ist, wie diese Einleitung vermuten lässt.
Das Album braucht ein wenig
länger, um zu zünden. Die ersten zwei Hördurchgänge gestalten sich aufgrund des
teilweise höchst eigenwilligen Gitarrensounds und ungewöhnlichen Gesangs recht
anstrengend. Hat man es aber geschafft, sich daran zu gewöhnen, zeigt sich,
dass DARK INTENTIONS ein Album abliefern, welches an einigen Stellen
überzeugend ist, an anderen jedoch stark ausbaufähig. Hohen Ansprüchen kann es
leider nicht entsprechen. Das Problem, das sich nach gut der Hälfte der elf
Songs stellt, ist dass die Band sich zu sehr auf dem vorgegebenen Schema ausruht
und kaum versucht, die Soundstrukturen zu modifizieren.
Gerade weil es unzählige derartige
Entwürfe gibt bzw. gegeben hat, wundert es doch sehr, dass sich keine Band dazu
verpflichtet sieht, gegen die Ermüdungserscheinungen des Hardcores vorzugehen.
Schade, hier wäre mehr drin gewesen, denn grundsätzlich bringt die Band alles
mit, um einem Genre, das sich nur viel zu oft selbst genügt, kräftig in den
Hintern zu treten.

We recieved the debut album from
Dark Intentions from the Netherlands. The albums is called Destined to Burn and
it was released on June 30th though Deity Down Records. you can find 11 songs
on it with influences from the Metalcore, Hardcore and the Thrash scene.It's
hard to compare them with other bands cause their are alot of different
influences in their music. Just think of mix of (here it comes)Biohazard meets
Merauder meets The Haunted. After hearing Destined to Burn a couple of times I
must confess that the cd grows and grows everytime you listen to it. Specially
the vocals done by Martijn are great.I think we gonna hear a lot more of Dark
Intentions in the future.I really hope that the get the right promotion they
deserve to get known by all of you cause this album really kicks ass!!! My
Conclusion:one of the best Dutch albums in this genre in a long time. Get it
get it get it get it get it get it!!!!

Na het uitbrengen van voornamelijk
death metal-platen van onder meer Hatred en Devious komt het Nederlandse Deity
Down Records nu met het debuutalbum van de heren van Dark Intentions. Dit
viertal uit Breda bestaat al sinds eind 2002 en met twee ep’s op zak hebben ze
de aandacht weten te trekken bij eerdergenoemd label. De band presenteert op
‘Destined To Burn’ tien songs (exclusief intro), welke een mix zijn tussen
hardcore en thrash metal. Voormalig gitarist van Born From Pain, Stefan van
Neerven, nam hiervoor plaats achter de knoppen, terwijl in Alan Douches’ West
West Side Music Studio in de VS de puntjes op de i werden gezet.
Ondanks de hulp van gevestigde
namen heeft Dark Intentions er af en toe moeite mee om de middelmaat te
ontstijgen. Paddenstoelen zouden er bijvoorbeeld jaloers op kunnen worden, als
ze zien hoeveel bands er in dit genre per jaar wel niet uit de grond schieten.
Tegenwoordig kun je eigenlijk bijna niet meer gewoon lekker je ding doen, je
moet echt wel iets speciaals brengen wil het grotere publiek je aandacht geven.
Helaas mist Dark Intentions dit beetje extra dus.
Luisterend naar een nummer als
‘When Past And Present Collide’, komt wel het besef dat deze band een ideale
opener zou kunnen zijn voor een Born From Pain of een Demia, maar tot nu toe
houdt het daar wel een beetje bij op. Als je je een beetje thuis voelt in dit
genre zal dit schijfje prima bevallen, maar verwacht niet dat dit je leven
drastisch op z’n kop zal zetten.

y en esta ocasión abandona el death metal cańero que suele ser lo normal en sus
lanzamientos para presentarnos a otros compatriotas suyos llamados DARK
INTENTIONS, que tiene la mirada y ambos pies puestos en el pasado, ya que se
dedican al thrashcore de finales de los 80, principios de los 90.
La banda se creó a principios del
2003 y ya tienen una demo de 3 temas y un ep de 5, que les han valido para
ganarse una pequeńa base de fans y poder haber realizado más de 40 conciertos
por la tierra de los tulipanes. Como la cosa cada vez iba pintando mejor, se
metieron en estudio para registrar la obra que os ofrecemos hoy y que ha sido
lanzada por el citado sello hace escasamente 2-3 semanas.
Este gente no quiere esconder de
donde han mamado, musicalmente, y de donde han sacado la
"inspiración", y que no es otro lugar que Nueva York y su rica escena
hardcore. Bandas como CRO-MAGS, SICK OF IT ALL (antes de dulcificarse), BIOHAZARD
(antes de que se volvieran "bailables" y machacones), MADBALL (mis
preferidos de estos "ruidos"), los antiguos CARNIVORE (de aquí
surgieron TYPE O NEGATIVE), PRONG, AGNOSTIC FRONT, MURPHY'S LAW... incluso
algunas bandas thrash de la ciudad bebían del punk/hardcore (de siempre se ha
dicho que todo neoyorkino tiene el hardcore en su corazón) y es de ahí de donde
estos cuatro holandeses toman prestado todo lo que ofrecen. Realmente sorprende
que sigan quedando bandas de esta guisa porque la llama que alumbraba aquella
escena hace tiempo que dejó de brillar con la misma intensidad (nuevos sonidos,
nuevos gustos...) y el mercado se ha vuelto demasiado variado.
Pero claro, si tenemos en cuenta
que el thrash está viviendo una segunda juventud... żquién nos dice que no
pueda pasar lo mismo con estos sonidos??
El disco arranca con la bélica
intro de "MMXXIX" y acto seguido nos llueve una montańa de mala leche
y velocidad con "Suffer Severe", buen tema en el que mezclan el
thrash menos amable con pasajes muy hardcoretas (de ritmos más marcados).
Clásica en estos sonidos es la siguiente "The Murder", con un aumento
muy considerable de la potencia y la pesadez sacrificando la velocidad, incluso
se le puede ver un pequeńo toque death en algún momento. Más a medio tiempo
ruidoso nos llega "Vengeance", aunque la voz siga siendo 100%
hardcore, y que solo varía su propuesta llegando al final, con la inclusión de
ritmos mucho más vivos y espídicos.
"Holy Words" es un tema
super marcado en su inicio, muy machacon, pero en cuanto pasa el primer minuto
la banda quita el pie del freno y se lía con ritmos a 200km/h totalmente
hardcore/punk descarnado. En cambio "Today Is The Day" es mucho más
thrash, con ritmos muy yankis, pesados al máximo (una pena que esos platos
suenen tan altos!!) y una voz más a lo Max Cavalera, con una zona final más
sibarita dentro de los cánones del estilo y de la propia banda, con voz en plan
death.
Volvemos a la velocidad con
"Untouched" y sus ritmos en plan power/thrash a lo MACHINE HEAD con
la voz al borde del vómito. Nuevamente ha que llamar negativamente la atención
sobre esos platos, cuyo volumen es excesivo (supongo que la producción no habrá
sido millonaria, jejeje). No está nada mal el cambio. "It Dies Today"
es muy groovy, con ritmos más lentos y pesados, con voz totalmente death (lleva
efectos), aunque aún manteniendo su toque hardcore. Para la zona central nos
presentan unas solistas muy nórdicas, que no las esperábamos a tenor de lo que
nos estaban ofreciendo y los primeros coros del disco, en plan grupo de
amigotes de marcha (típicos del hardcore). El tema más interesante, sin duda.
"Whispers" vuelve a lo
ruidoso y al hardcore más genuíno, con esa batería a pińón fijo y unas
guitarras más pesadas de lo normal. La banda le da variedad al tema con pasajes
más relajados, pero igual de cańeros, y voces susurradas sobre riffs thrashers
sobre todo en la zona central/final. "When Past And Present Collide"
tiene uno de los ritmos más interesantes que esta gente nos ha presentado. El sonido
se torna thrasher agresivo y tosco, aunque la batería punkarrona nos despierta
del sueńo, por si se nos olvidaba que son hc hasta la médula. Y cerrando el
disco nos topamos con "Empty Eyes", tema en el que juegan con el
death de ritmos entrecortados, con voz agresiva y gritona (sin pasarse), y que
poco tiene que ver con los demás cortes.
Hay que reconocer que el estilo ha
perdido con los ańos esa capacidad de "asustar" y de agobiar con sus
cańeros ritmos; se ha visto ampliamente superado en cuanto a mala leche,
velocidad, agresividad, técnica, imaginación....por multitud de propuestas.
Este grupo holandés cumple con lo suyo, rememorando una época que tuvo su
importancia pero que dudo vuelva a recuperar el esplendór.
Buen disco, que no sentará cátedra
ni que emocionará en exceso pero si que consigue hacer pasar un rato agradable
recordando viejos tiempos. Si te gustaban los primerizos SICK OF IT ALL pero
más cańeros, aquí tienes a esta gente.

Lust auf einen geradlinigen,
ungemein aggressiven Metal/Hardcore-Bastard? Jau? Dann hiergeblieben, weiter
gelesen und sich danach um das aktuelle Scheibchen der Niederländer DARK INTENTIONS
umgesehen.
"Destined To Burn"
liefert eine fette Breitseite und kommt in ungemein wuchtiger, aber
soundtechnisch dennoch einwandfreier Form aus den Boxen. Zwar liefert das aus
Breda stammende Quartett keineswegs Innovatives, doch immerhin schaffen die
Niederländer den Brückenschlag vom Hardcore der alten Schule (teilweise sogar
im NYC-Style) hin zum derb-deftigen Metal, ohne dabei zu sehr auf
offensichtliche Einflussquellen zurückgreifen zu müssen.
Zeitgemäßen Metalcore mit
Schweden-Tod-Riffs und Melodien sucht man vergeblich auf diesem Brandanschlag
in musikalischer Form, viel eher sind es Fans von Truppen wie BORN FROM PAIN
oder TERROR, die sich hier angesprochen - oder noch besser gesagt, angesprungen
- fühlen sollten.
Deftiges Hardcore/Metal-Gebretter
ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste ist hier angesagt, da macht auch die eigentlich
beschämend kurze Spielzeit von 28 Minuten nichts aus, denn immerhin werden dem
Hörer in jener Zeit elf Songs dargeboten und die gilt es bei intensiver Hingabe
überhaupt erst einmal körperlich zu überstehen.

Portán kopogtat a holland Dark
Intentions, agresszív és tömény, nem érezni a pubok spangli égette felhőinek
jelenét, más dolgokat viszont nagyon is. A srácok 2002-ben alakultak Bredaban,
s a Destined to burn első nagylemezük, amit egy EP és egy demó előzött meg.
Egyre jobban érezni, hogy a metalcore, deathcore és új generációs HC divatja
leáldózóban van, hiszen nem az első olyan kiadvány, melynél a kiadó mellékelte
információs lapon ilyen mondatot olvashatunk: „No trends, no bullshit, just aggressive,
ultra-heavy hitting songs with…”. Igen, kérem szépen, a dolog annyira
kifulladóban van, hogy már dícsőségnek és jó propagandának tűnik ellentábort
formálni és elrugaszkodni a maistream adagolta vonaltól. Ennek ellenére holland
barátaink zenéjében éppenúgy megtalálhatóak azok az emelek, melyek a jelenben
fertőznek és még talán egy ideig életképesen ki is szolgálják a piacgazdaságot.
A Dark Intentions zenéjét
leginkább úgy lehetne elemezni, ha azt írnám rá, hogy thrash metallal fertőzött
– némileg valóban crossover – új generációs HC. Tehát olyan csapatok jelenléte
tagadhatatlan, mint pl. a szintén holland Born from Pain. De ugyanígy
megtalálhatóak az újabb Biohazard, Slayer, Madball, Bones Brigad és Testament
húzások, s mondjuk a legújabb Exodus prédikálta jelenek. A bredai srácok
kellően változatos muzsikával állnak elő, valóban agresszív és ténylegesen
erőteljes, amiben itt-ott érezni a 80’-as és 90’-es évek hatásvadász fűszereit,
ám ettől még alkotásuk némileg instabil, de mindenképpen jobban befogadható és
közérthető, mint az igazán mai csapatok anyagjai. Olyan átmenetet képeznek,
mely által egy régebbi HC és thrash orientált hallgató találhat magának fogós
témákat. Az egyensúly megvan, a hatások erősek a végeredmény, pedig hibrid
létére is kellemes csalódást hordoz magában.
Igazából bárkinek ajánlott, aki
vágyik az újdonságra, a modernségre, de hányingere van a jelenben uralkodó
trendekből, ám az életképességük, ettől még éppen úgy véges, mint a divatcoreok
halmazáé!

Het uit Breda afkomstige Dark
Intentions laat ons via hun debuut cd een aardig poepje ruiken. Dark Intentions
is een thrashcoreband met een eigen smoel. De heren beheersen hun instrumenten
prima en er huist bovendien heel wat kwaliteit in deze band. De elf nummers
fokken je van de eerste tot en met de laatste noot op. Dat we in de nabije
toekomst nog heel wat zullen gaan horen van dit viertal is gewoon een kwestie
van tijd. Als jonge band mag je op een album als "Destined To Burn"
trots, heel trots zijn. Een naam om in de gaten te houden!

Piů che
di "Dark Intensions" io parlerei di "Cattive" Intensions,
in quanto l'obiettivo strenuamente perseguito da questa combriccola di quattro pazzi
č molto esplicita: aggredire l'ascoltatore. Una cavalcata di ben undici brani
devastanti e spaccaossa nella migliore tradizione thrashcore. Non mi starň qui
a dilungare su discorsi di genere o di influenze; posso affermare comunque che
questo lavoro č dotato di una personalitŕ e di una compattezza veramente degne
di nota: sound roccioso, poderoso e cadenzato quanto veloce e tagliente. Dotato
di una produzione estremamente professionale, capace di rendere degna giustizia
all'altrettanto degno prodotto della band e di un book e di una cover finemente
realizzati, i D.I danno alle stampe un prodotto che consiglio caldamente a
tutti gli amanti delle muraglie sonore, degli headbangin' piů fuoribondi e dei
sound piů distruttivi. Ascoltate e fatevi vale.

Die aus den Niederlanden
stammenden DARK INTENSIONS beziehen ihre Inspiration aus einer Zeit, in der bei
dem Gedanken an eine Verbindung von Hardcore und Metal nicht direkt an
Breakdowns und KILLSWITCH ENGAGE gedachte wurde, sondern viel eher an ANTHRAX
und SLAYER mit ganz großer Hardcore-Kante.
Vor allem der erste Track beginnt
mit ganz klarer Thrash-Schlagseite und geht direkt gut ab. Und auch im weiteren
Verlauf von „Destined To Burn“ machen die vier Jungs aus Breda keine Gefangenen
im Trendlager. Zwar kommen hier auch Fans von TERROR auf ihre Kosten, aber eben
auch die von BIOHAZARD und ähnlichen oldschooligen Hardcorecombos.
Und obwohl sich die Palette der
Einflüsse jetzt ziemlich weitläufig liest, schaffen es DI auf ihrer ersten
Full-Length-Veröffentlichung (nach einem Demo 2004 und einer MCD 2005) nicht
bis zum Schluss damit zu fesseln. Denn ganz so viel Abwechslung, wie man
aufgrund der oberen Zeilen vermuten könnte, gibt es hier dann doch nicht zu
finden. Zwar wechseln sich die schnellen Thrash-Riffings mit rhythmisch
betonten Parts immer wieder ab ohne in Breakdowns zu münden, trotzdem wird vor
allem auch durch die (ansonsten ganz coole) Stimme von Martijn Reurings hier
etwas von der Möglichkeit verschenkt, neue Akzente zu setzen. Schade
eigentlich, denn wir können heute tatsächlich noch ein paar mehr Platten
vertragen, die sich zwar aus Metal und Hardcore zusammensetzen, fett produziert
sind und trotzdem nicht nur Seitengescheitelte anlocken.
Auch wenn sie nicht den absoluten
Kracher abliefern, positionieren sich die Niederländer doch recht eindrucksvoll
im Bereich der schnellen und harten Musik. Sauber gespielt und druckvoll
umgesetzt – jetzt muss nur noch etwas in Sachen Abwechslung passieren.

gezien worden, maar wij hebben in de loop der jaren altijd goede heavy
thrashmetalbands gehad. Niet iedereen kwam de grens over, maar ze waren er wel degelijk.
En ze zijn er nog steeds. Dat is de conclusie die ik kan trekken na het
beluisteren van Destined To Burn. Dark Intentions bestaat al zes jaar, en na
een 3-track demo in 2004 en 5-track ep in 2005 hebben we nu hun eerste
langspeler voor ons. Je wordt niet teleurgesteld. Ze spelen (old school)
thrash, maar met hardcore- and death metalinvloeden erin gemixt. Daar is niets
mis mee. Integendeel, die ingrediënten zorgen voor net dat beetje diversiteit
dat dit album tot een plezier maakt om naar te luisteren. Wat mij ook behaagt,
is dat de muziek nooit vrolijk of droevig klinkt, alleen maar heavy. Als je dit
opzet, wil je de luchtgitaar tevoorschijn halen, je hoofd naar beneden doen en
met de muziek mee bangen, spelen en schreeuwen. Heerlijk.

hier mal reinhören, schließlich erinnert nicht zuletzt „When past and present

This Breda based Dutch act (do not
mistake for the people from Utrecht who make soundtracks, the Experimental/
Industrial Metal act from San Jose in the USA, or the Danish Death Metal act by
the same name) started their activities in late 2002. In their own words, the
band's members (having different backgrounds) started by writing songs, which
saw a gradual evolution in style "...into a more modern version of '80s/
'90s NY Hardcore with Thrash and Death Metal influences, resulting in hard and
heavy compact songs...", citing the likes of "...Testament, Slayer,
Anthrax, Iron Maiden, The Haunted but also Leeway, the Cro-Mags, Biohazard and
numerous other artists..." as a big influence on their music. More about
the band's music later, first the continuation of its history!
Between Oct. 2003 and March 2004
the band records its first 3-track demo Survival Is Not An Option, and the
posictive reviews gave the band a good idea of where they were at. The shows
that followed helped the band in their further musical evolution. In 2005 Dark
Intentions recorded the 5 tracks (for which they travelled to the Artssound
Studio in Belgium) which would be released as the Remorse Will Die Today EP
through the small and utterly new Pure & Simple Records imprint. Again,
reviews were positive, and the boys (singer Martijn Reurines, guitarist Theo
Talboom, bassist Jakob Slob and drummer Victor Fredriks) were able to do some
40 shows in promotion of the EP. After a period of silence, which the band used
to write new material, the guys returned to Artsound in late April of this year
for an 8-day recordings session with producer Stefan van Neerven (formerly of
Born From Pain). The recordings finished, the band was happy to find themselves
getting a deal with Deity Down Records for the release of their full-length.
And now for our return to the
band's music. While I was listening to the album for the first time, I had this
nagging feeling of being reminded of some '80s act, and during the second
listening session it suddenly hit me: Amebix!, the British forerunnners of what
would be known as Cust Punk (in fact, the band formed in '78 blended Hardcore
Punk and Heavy Metal into an early form of Thrash Metal). Sure, that typical
raw vocal style, the rude and simple-but-effective crossover mix of Hardcore
and several Metal genres...that's Amebix (and the thought link actually came
from me going over to the record store earlier in the week to order a recently
released compilation of old Amebix material on Alternative Tentacles)all over,
man! Of course, the boys are not copy-cats, because they've gotten to their
current style through natural evolution...and in fact, when you start looking
at the differences, you will find the song pace quite faster in the case of DI,
resulting in compacter, shorter songs...but in spite of that the songs still dó
create about the same atmospheres, see!? I'm sure a lot of reviewers ar gonna
have their mouth full of the term "Metalcore", but personally I feel
that is being used a bit too often to simplify a "job" which shoůld
be far more critical than that!

yourself, as the band posted two songs off the 11-track album (which has a
disappointingly short "length" of only just over 28 minutes – in days
of old we'd call a such record a mini-album) at myspace.com/darkintentions
alongside two songs off their 2005 debut EP. What with Amebix having reformed
in February of this year, I see a perfect match to support them here! Now I
don't go out to concerts too much anymore, but a combination of these two bands
would be an evening I'd try to keep open (not always evident with the paying
job I have) to witness.
Well, you may have understood I've grown véry fond of this
Dutch band over the couple of listening sessions I've given the album, and I'll
even go as far as to put it into my year-lists...there!

Varsinkin 1990-luvun lopulla ja
2000-luvun alkupuolella tuntui juuri Hollannista tulevan runsaasti erilaisia
metalcorevirityksiä, osa näistä enemmän tai vähemmän hyviä. Dark Intentions on
sitä vastoin varsin tuore tuttavuus, sillä ennen tätä debyyttitäyspitkää takana
on vain muutaman vuoden takainen MCD-julkaisu ja demo.
Destined to Burn on alansa hyvää
tasoa, vaikkei mitään mullistavuuksia esittelekään. Merkille pantavaa on
ainakin se, että yhtye myös työstää sitä mitä lupaa – thrashin ja metalcoren
sekoitusta – eikä yritäkään kuorruttaa rujoa kakkuaan millään äitelillä
NWOAHM-tyylisillä puhtailla lauluosuuksilla, kuten niin useat kollegat tänä
päivänä tekevät. Soundillisestikin liikutaan sopivan väkevillä ja murjovilla
vesillä.
Varsinaisia täkyjä levyltä ei ehkä esiin oikein nouse,
vaan huomio kiinnittyykin enemmän tasavahvaan materiaaliin. Ajoittain biisejä
vaivaa pienen pieni puuduttavuus, mutta ei mitenkään erityisen häiritsevästi.
Debyytiksi tämä on joka tapauksessa erittäin hyvä suoritus, ja seuraava tekele
pitää ilman muuta tarkastaa, kunhan sen aika koittaa. Virkistävä tuttavuus
omassa kentässään!

“Dark Intentions kicked off late
in 2002-early 2003 in their hometown Breda, the Netherlands. Starting out with
writing songs, gradually the style of music evolved into a more modern version
of 1980’s-1990’s NY hardcore with slight thrash/death metal influences,
resulting in hard, heavy and compact songs.” So far Dark Intentions’ story in a
nutshell.
After a dull intro, Dark
Intentions immediately shows what it’s worth. The band kicks in heavily with a
solid hardcore sound, spiced up a with thrashy guitar riffs. Also the vocals
remind you of a typical hardcore band. Quite monotonous, yet convincingly
aggressive. Then again, that most of the times means, no real surprise
whatsoever.
And when I say no surprise, I
really mean, no surprise. It’s basically the story of the entire album. The
music sure kicks some ass, but I’ve heard it all before and I’ve heard better
before. There’s hardly anything catchy to grab my attention and hold it
throughout the album. I mean, if a good album is meant for a special occasion,
Destined To Burn is just a background album. The kind you listen to when you’re
at work and not really knowing what’s going on except for the fact there’s some
heavy ass music in the background. Good enough to keep you entertained every
now and then.
So, without wanting to sound
extremely negative about Dark Intentions, I wouldn’t want to recommend the
album either. I personally have the feeling that they’re a great experience
live, punching you in the face with a wall of sound. After all, they finished
second in this years edition of the national Metal Battle contest. No doubt
there’s a good reason for that! For those who still wanna check out a song of
these lads, try ‘When Past And Present Collide’. Worth a try!

Ruim twee jaar na de release van
de MCD `Remorse Will Die Today` komt de Nederlandse hardcoreband Dark Intentions
eindelijk met een volledig album op de proppen. Het lange wachten heeft
geloond, want de tracks op `Destined To Burn` zijn uitstekend gearrangeerd en
kenmerken zich door een opgefokte sfeer en een eigen karakter. Muzikaal blijft
alles bij het oude, al zijn de muzikanten individueel wel gegroeid.. Eerlijke
en techttoe rechtaan hardcore, zonder experimentele bullshit. Ook zijn de
metalinvloeden (vooral wat het gitaarwerk van Theo betreft) een verrijking
omdat er zo voldoende variatie geboden wordt en de nummers nooit saai worden.
Stefan van Neerven (Born From Pain) tekende overigens voor de uitstekende
produktie en Alan Douches voor de dito mastering.

Hardcore/Thrashmetal trendfrei,
geradeaus und volle Wucht zwischen die Zähne das sind die Trademarks von Dark
Intentions aus Holland. Nach einem Demo und einer Mini CD gibt es jetzt ihren
ersten Longplayer, obwohl der den Namen bei einer Spielzeit unter 29 Minuten
gar nicht so richtig verdient hat. Die vier Holländer kommen musikalisch bei
ihren 11 Songs sofort auf den Punkt. Kein langes Geplänkel sondern volle Kanne
nach vorne geprügelt in einem räudig heftigen Hardcore/Thrah Gewitter. Man
bewegt sich dabei schön im trendfreien Sound und ist meilenweit weg vom
modernen MetalCore. Zwar hört man eine Menge Hatebreed, aber hier haben nicht
nur die Amis ihre Spuren hinterlassen sondern auch Born from Pain, die Cro
Mags, Leeway und für den nötigen Thrash Anteil ältere Slayer. Das ist zwar
nichts Neues oder sehr innovativ, aber wer mit einer so ungebändigter
Aggressivität daher kommt, so herrlich brachial rumprügelt und auch schöne
fiese Groove-Parts im Programm hat, der muss nicht das Rad neu erfinden. Dark
Intentions haben einfach eine Wutscheibe abgeliefert für Fans die sich gerne
musikalisch verhauen lassen möchten und das gefällt mir sehr gut!

Mann, hat mich dieser Longplayer
umgehauen. DARK INTENTIONS aus Breda formierten sich vor etwa sechs Jahren und kombinieren
den New York Hardcore der 80er und 90er mit Trash, wie man ihn von ANTHRAX,
frühen METALLICA und TESTAMENT kennt. Der Trash-Anteil überwiegt deutlich und
so macht "Destined To Burn" einen Heidenspass. Das düstere Cover
passt da nicht unbedingt huntertprozentig dazu, ist aber trotzdem nicht ohne.
Elf Tracks, die an SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, Skatecore, LEEWAY aber auch an BACKFIRE
erinnern und vom BORN FROM PAIN-Mann Stefan van Neerven aufgenommen wurden. Das
Mastering hat Alan Douches übernommen und so langsam frage ich mich, ob der
gute Alan überhaupt noch zum Schlafen kommt. "Destined To Burn" ist
wirklich ein fantastisches Album, das stilistisch allein auf weiter Flur steht
und so mitreissend ist, dass man es eigentlich täglich anhören könnte. Unbedingt
mal antesten.

Bei der Bloodchamber ist man immer
ein wenig aufgeregt, wenn neue Promos reinkommen, von denen man bisher nichts
weiß. So auch bei dieser Platte. DARK INTENTIONS aus Holland allerdings haben
eindeutig die Hosen an. Mit ihrem Album „Destined To Burn“ schaffen die vier
Jungs eine knallharte, aggressive Mischung aus 90er-Jahre Hardcore, Metalcore
und Thrash Metal, wobei die Liebe zu Bands wie SEPULTURA, PANTERA und BORN FROM
PAIN kaum zu überhören ist. Brutaler Gesang trifft auf schnelle Doublebass und
in Sachen Gitarrenarbeit hat sich Gitarrist Theo Talboom den ein oder anderen
Trick bei erfolgreichen Thrash-Größen abgeguckt.
Mit einem düsteren Intro namens
„MMXXIX“ eröffnet der Vierer das gute Stück. Es folgen schnelle Beats wie bei
„Suffer Severe“, harte Riffs in „The Murder“ und das Album gewinnt an Fahrt. Höhepunkt
der CD ist für mich „Today Is The Day“, was mit fetten Riffs, gutem Aufbau und
zu guter Letzt mit einem dicken Breakdown ordentlich Zähne zeigt. Kurze Zeit
später fühlt sich jeder PANTERA-Fan bei „When Past And Present Collide“ an
„Cowboys From Hell“ erinnert. Kurz vor dem Ende geben alle noch mal alles und
mit letzter Kraft brüllt Sänger Martijn ein finales „Forever!“ in die Galaxie
und das Album stirbt.
Die Ruhe nach dem Sturm gibt dem
Hörer die Möglichkeit, über das Album nachzudenken. Die Produktion ist betont
aggressiv, dabei trotzdem klar und das Album verliert auch mit zunehmender
Lautstärke keine Substanz. Mir persönlich bleibt nicht viel mehr übrig, als vor
diesem gelungenen Album den Hut zu ziehen.

This is Dark Intentions’ debut
fullength, and with it they prove to me (what other acts have already proven
tons of times before) that I don’t like metalcore. I can certainly enjoy
hardcore and metal of the more brutal kind if pretty much played nonstop here
at home. But to me metalcore falls dead in a no man’s land. What is on Dark
Intentions’ behalf, though, is the strong thrash metal vibe.
At first I just thought of it as a
fairly ordinary dose of metalcore in the Born From Pain agenda, but without the
overly use of slamming breakdowns. It’s mostly set in a pretty mid tempo, with
groove being the key ingredient. And the groove comes from some cool old school
thrash riffing reminding me of Anthrax (and at times even Slayer). Vocal wise
it also falls somewhere in this area, with a very thrashy hardcore screaming
that occasionally turns into growls. So when thinking about it, this isn’t very
ordinary after all.
They have a pretty clear old
school US hardcore sound, that’s been juiced up with some thrash. In some ways
it feels like a crossover album, but never quite making it due to too much
metalcore. Unfortunately it’s a tad boring to listen to since the
production/mastering makes it sound so dead. It’s a really stale and weak sound
with absolutely no warmth or life to it. So it’s incredibly difficult to take
to heart.
Cool old school thrash aside, the
horrible sound and metalcore influence makes it unbearable to me. They’re
without a doubt great musicians, but I’m to wrong guy to judge the music.

Metalcore is niet zelden een
eufemisme voor metalbands met een matige instrumentbeheersing. Metal light, zo
je wil. Daarnaast is er nog een hele zwik bands in het genre die van de
hardcorehak op de metaltak springt, met een weinig consistent eindresultaat.
Het Bredase Dark Intentions weet op zijn eerste full length beide categorieën
te ontstijgen.
Met de instrumentbeheersing van de
band zit het wel snor. Het spel is strak en overdonderend, wat door een
professionele sound (Alan Douches tekende voor de mastering) nog eens benadrukt
wordt. Het goed doordachte gitaarwerk wordt maximaal uitgebuit zonder de
grenzen van overdaad op te zoeken. Op zijn sterkste momenten doet Dark
Intentions zelfs niet onder voor een solide thrashband.
Over het geheel gezien knalt de
groep als Born from Pain, Sworn Enemy en Merauder. De tijd en moeite die in
Destined To Burn zijn gestoken werpen hun vruchten af. Als Dark Intentions
evenveel aandacht aan de podiumprestaties besteedt, kan de band zich zeer zeker
in de kijker gaan spelen.

Die Niederländische Bollo-Familie
hat mit DARK INTENTIONS erneuten Zuwachs zu vermelden und das Rezept der Band
ist so simpel wie effektiv: Man klingt so wie die heimischen Szene-Vorreiter
Born From Pain minus der Fähigkeit einigermaßen straighte und eingängige Songs
zu schreiben.
Das bei einer solchen
Herangehensweise das neue Album "Destined To Burn" eher schlecht als
recht ausgefallen ist, kann man sich vorstellen und selbst wenn man auf eher
stumpfen NYHC meets Metal-Einfluss steht, bieten DARK INTENTIONS immer noch
viel zu wenig Anspruch. Nahezu jeder Textzeile, jedes Riff und jedes Solo ist
in dem Kontext dieses Albums vorhersehbar und mit jedem neuen Song wächst der
Wunsch die Band aus dem Player zu entfernen. Wer Stumpfsinn zu seinem
Lebensinhalt auserkoren hat darf sich gerne "Destined To Burn"
bestellen, alle anderen sind mit dem letzten Output von No Turning Back besser
beraten.

In Zeiten, in denen illegale
Raubkopien den Labels immer größere finanzielle Schäden und Probleme bereiten,
liegt nun eine CD vor mir, deren Titel übersetzt soviel heißt wie „zum brennen
bestimmt.“ Kann man natürlich so oder so verstehen („Steal This Album“ von
SYSTEM OF A DOWN hat die Kriminalitätsrate, zumindest meines Wissens nach, ja
nun beispielsweise nicht drastisch erhöht)! Wie dem auch sein, neben „Destined
To Burn“ ziert den Silberling auch der Name DARK INTENTIONS, hinter dem sich
vier Recken aus Breda (Niederlande) verbergen. Ende 2002/ Anfang 2003
gegründet, haute man 2004 das erste Demo raus, legte ein Jahr später eine EP
nach und hat nun mit diesem Longplayer den nächsten Schritt getan.
Der beginnt auch gleich mal recht
düster mit Kriegs- und Unwettergeräuschen als Intro. Dies ist allerdings nichts
im Vergleich zu dem, was anschließend noch auf uns zu kommt: Das richtige
Gewitter beginnt nämlich erst, als die „2“ auf dem Display der Anlage erscheint
und der erste „richtige“ Song losstürmt. „Suffer Severe“ taufte man den Opener,
dessen Schlagzeug gleich mal kompromisslos auf einen einhagelt, während die
blitzschnellen Riffs genau so in dem Gehörgang donnern wie das Grollen der
unbarmherzigen Shouts von Vokalist Martijn Reurings. Ist letzteres noch eher im
Bereich des frühen NY-Hardcores einzuordnen, summen die Instrumente eher
Trashmetallische Hymnen. Dabei ist „summen“ ist in diesem Fall eines der
denkbar unpassendsten Adjektive, so wuchtig und unnachgiebig wie das
niederländische Quartett ihren Sound hier präsentiert. Über gut 28 Minuten
drücken die Jungs das Gaspedal komplett durch und reihen dabei ein fettes Riff
nach ans nächste, oder schießen mal eben ein Solo wie beispielsweise in „Holy
Words“ aus der Hüfte. Das hohe Tempo der Kompositionen hat zur Folge, dass sie
im Durchschnitt entsprechend gerade mal 2:30 Minuten andauern. Man merkt gar
nicht, wie schnell das Liedgut einen durchs Gehör getrieben wird – höchstens
durch die tierischen Schmerzen im Genick, da einen die elf Nackenbrecher
unweigerlich zum headbangen treiben. Abwechslung wird einem dabei nicht
wirklich geboten, allerdings wissen die Klangwerke allesamt schon ziemlich gut
zu unterhalten. Martijn verlangt seiner Stimme zwar keine Quantensprünge ab,
variiert aber dennoch auch in kleinem Maße sehr ordentlich; sei es beim
überwiegendem Shouten im klassischem NY-HC-Stil, bei wohl platzierten Growls,
Psycho-Sprachgesang-Passagen („Whispers“) oder beim phasenweise todesmetaligem
Geschrei wie in „It Dies Today“. Das bereits angesprochene wirklich nette
Riffing und die hier und da mal wieder eingestreuten Breaks lassen einen
abwechselnd die Haarpracht und die Fäuste schwingen und bedienen so sowohl
Kutten- und-Stiefel- als auch Cappy-und-Sportschuh-Träger.
Alles in allem also ein sehr
gelungenes LP-Debüt von DARK INTENTIONS, bei dem vor allem Stücke wie das
vortreffliche „Suffer Severe“, das erst relativ schleppend beginnende „The
Murder“ oder unter anderem auch „Untouched“ durchaus das ein oder andere
Schleudertraume verursachen könnten.

Liefhebbers van hard- en metalcore
attentie. We hebben een knallend product van eigen bodem. Het Bredase Dark
Intentions heeft onlangs zijn eerste echte cd gelanceerd: Destined To Burn.
Jakob (bas), Theo (gitaar),
Martijn (zang) en Victor (drums) trekken alles uit de kast om hun publiek
letterlijk plat te spelen. De ultra-heavy-jongens doen dat heel knap. Alle
songs zijn retestrak. Tere zieltjes onder ons moeten zich maar niet aan dit
werk wagen. Alle teksten zijn doordrenkt van dood en verderf: 'Today will be
the day, humanity swept away'. Prachtig, precies zoals het hoort in de
corebusiness.
Dark Intentions is dit jaar tweede
geworden in de finale van Holland's nationwide Metal Battle band contest. Met
het puike Destined To Burn verdienen ze het om naar de eerste plek door te
stoten; zo hard mogelijk. Wie de loodzware heren live aan het werk wil zien: op
26 september staan ze in Oud Brabant in Oosterhout.

Dat iets wat goed is niet altijd
van ver hoeft te komen hebben al genoeg Nederlands bands bewezen. Ook op het
gebied van hardcore / thrash / death metal (of moet ik bij een mengelmoes zoals
dit wellicht zeggen: crossover of metalcore?) heeft ons landje al het nodige
gepresteerd en middels dit 'Destined To Burn' van het Brabantse Dark Intentions
hebben we er weer een prima release bij!
'Destined To Burn' is zo'n album
geworden dat best wat verschillende aanknopingspunten heeft. Als je voor de
eerste keer die stevige riffs van 'Today Is The Day' hoort neig je naar het
maken van wat hardcore achtige rondspringende bewegingen. Tijdens het zwaardere
'The Murder' valt echter wel een tikkie death metal te bespeuren, en niet in de
laatste plaats mede door toedoen van de zware strot die zanger Martijn Reurings
rijk is. Andere tracks zoals 'It Dies Today' kenmerken zich via dreigende metal
riffs en tijdens een 'Whispers' en 'When Past And Present Collide' is het
lekker beuken geblazen. Wat buiten de juiste muziek een cd verder af maakt is
de productie en het artwork. Welnu, dit schijfje (een klein half uurtje muziek)
klinkt als een klok en het artwork ziet er donker, dreigend en goed uit. Het
moge wel duidelijk zijn nu: 'Destined To Burn' is een gaaf album dat zeker wel
wat aandacht verdient. Check it out!

Sometimes good things happen just
around the corner. These last years many metal bands from The Netherlands have
proven themselves in different sub genres. Also in hardcore / thrash / death
metal (or should I say crossover or metalcore because of this mixture?) our
country has delivered some pretty strong bands lately, and with Dark Intentions
'Destined To Burn' yet another fine release is on the market!
'Destined To Burn' is an album
with different angles. When I heard the firm riffs in 'Today Is The Day' for
the first time it made jump around in hardcore style and during the heavier
part of 'The Murder' a little bit of a death metal growl came from my lips
(also because the low and dangerous voice from singer Martijn Reurings inspired
me to do so). Other tracks like 'It Dies Today' are packed with threatening
metal riffs and during a song like 'Whispers' or 'When Past And Present
Collide' firm pounding seems to be the motto. Besides the music, a CD can also
be judged on the production and the artwork, and in this area everything is
fine as well. This disc (about half an hour of music) sounds very clear and the
artwork looks dark, sinister and good. Well, I think that it should be obvious
by now: 'Destined To Burn' is an album that deserves some attention. Check it
out!

Die Holländer DARK INTENTIONS
versuchen zwanghaft im Fahrwasser ihrer erfolgreichen Landsmänner BORN FROM
PAIN mitzufahren. Doch die simplen breitbeinigen Riffs und die vorhersehbaren
Breakdowns will man nicht zum 1000. Mal hören. Ebenso geht der Versuch Jamey
Jastas Gesang zu imitieren in die Bollo-Hardcore-Hose. Wenn man sich dann noch
die Spielzeit von nicht mal 30 Minuten ansieht, kann man getrost sein Geld in
andere Veröffentlichungen investieren.

Avete presente la sensazione che
si prova restando bloccati in ascensore, quando anche quei pochi minuti di
clausura forzata sembrano durare in realtŕ ore? Ecco, lo stesso accade durante
l'ascolto di questo debut album degli olandesi Dark Intentions il cui
thrashmetalcore, intrappolato com'č tra le anguste barriere rappresentate dalle
quattro soluzioni sonore tipiche del genere, risulta talmente indigesto da far
sembrare interminabile l'ascolto di un platter che invece rasenta a stento la
mezz'ora di durata. Non ci credete? Provate ad immaginare un riff a caso dei
Caliban messo in loop variando solo la velocitŕ di esecuzione, privatelo della
boombastica produzione targata Roadrunner ed avrete grosso modo ottenuto il
contenuto sonoro di questo "Destined to Burn", il cui unico pregio,
se proprio vogliamo trovargliene uno, č quello di non cedere alle derive di
certo metalcore da classifica mantenendo un approccio sempre votato
all'aggressivitŕ. Troppo poco per farsi notare in un panorama musicale come
quello odierno, dove di dischi del genere ne escono a decine ogni mese:
nell'attesa che i giacimenti mondiali di carta carbone vadano esaurendosi voi
passate pure oltre senza remore.

Ontstaan in Breda eind 2002 weet
de band tot de dag van vandaag het publiek te vermaken met hun door thrash
metal beďnvloedde hardcore. Eind 2003, begin 2004 was het hun eerste demo en in
2005 hun EP die overal goed ontvangen werd. Tijd voor een full-length moet de
band gedacht hebben, wat op zich geen slechte beslissing is geweest. De band
mixt namelijk hun up-tempo hardcore met thrash-invloeden die we kennen van
bands als Testament en Anthrax waardoor er een zeer interessante mix ontstaat
die we bijvoorbeeld kennen van bands als Born From Pain en Biohazard. Dit doen
ze op een prettige manier waardoor het album niet snel verveelt. Ook de strot
van zanger Martijn Reurings is alles behalve vervelend te noemen. Ondanks dat
hij een wat constante stem weet hij het prima over het album te verdelen.
Destined To Burn is een
alleraardigst album geworden die de band aan interessante optredens gaat
helpen. Meer gaan we hier in ieder geval wel van horen.

Tuff metalcore frĺn Holland. Jag
tänker pĺ Hatebreed blandat med keps-trashmetal, en blandning som jag inte är
jätteimponerad av men som jag kan stĺ ut med om jag skulle bli utsatt för den,
som nu. Jag har inga som helst problem med att lyssna igenom Destined to Burn
bĺde 1 och 2 gĺnger i rad men efter varje gĺng har jag inte ett minne kvar om
hur det lät (mer än att det lät argt dĺ), men det kanske säger mer om mitt
intresse för den här musikstilen än om Dark Intentions kompetens. Det här är
inte alls min grej helt enkelt men behöver du träna upp din moshstil hemma
framför spegeln innan du vĺgar dig ut pĺ spelning sĺ kanske Destined to Burn
kan va din grej, ja med rätt träning kanske du kör den cleanaste krabbgĺngen pĺ
nästa ”hardcorespelning”! Som sagt säkert ett bra band om man är intresserad,
vilket jag inte är.

deciliter Pestilence, en matsked Motörhead och ett kryddmĺtt The Haunted sĺ har
du en riktigt välsmakande ny metalcore-öl frĺn Holland. Destined to burn är ett
riktigt energirikt förstlingsverk med punkig eftersmak som lovar gott inför
framtiden. Vĺgar man gissa att bandnamnet Dark Intentions härstammar frĺn The
Haunted-lĺten med samma namn? Förmodligen ingen högoddsare.

Nachdem das Intro verklungen ist,
kommt einem Krach entgegen geschleudert, der mich unwillkürlich an VENOM's
"Black Metal" denken lässt. Nur eben auf Hardcore! Dieser Eindruck
liegt an der Gradlinigkeit des Songs, er kommt sofort zur Sache und hinterlässt
nach zweieinhalb Minuten einen Trümmerhaufen, ähnlich wie der Referenz-Song.
Das ist schon mal ein gelungener Einstieg in die erste Langrille der
holländischen Nachbarn DARK INTENTIONS.
Leider geht es nicht weiter so
geradeaus, schwerfällige Parts, wie sie zur Zeit im Trend liegen, kompensieren
etwas die unbändige Energie, die DARK INTENTIONS zweifelsohne besitzen. Ein
Zugeständnis an den Hardcore-Mainstream. Kaum ein Song überschreitet die
dreieinhalb Minuten Marke, auf überflüssige Soli verzichtet das Quartett, hält
sich an die Spielregeln der Alten Schule. Auf ein aufgesetztes Gebrüll wird
ebenfalls verzichtet, hier orientiert sich Martijn an den Großen Alten und findet
die Balance zwischen Brüllen und Schreien. Nach 28 Minuten sind die 10 Songs
durch, was ganz klar für die Stücke spricht. Inhaltlich wird der Weltuntergang
in all seinen Facetten thematisiert und der findet seinen düsteren und schweren
Höhepunkt in "It Dies Today" und dem Rausschmeißer "Empty
Eyes".
Metallischer Hardcore ist nicht
neu und bietet nur wenig Raum sich weiterzuentwickeln, was im Fall DARK
INTENTIONS bedeutet, hier gibt es nichts zu hören, was nicht schon ein mal da
gewesen ist. Was DARK INTENTIONS aber für sich verbuchen können, ist ihre
musikalische Authentizität und die Energie, die sie, dank eines bodenständigen
Sounds, ungefiltert servieren.

Dopo un paio di uscite risalenti a
qualche anno fa (un demo e un miniCD), i Dark Intentions giungono finalmente,
sotto l’etichetta Deity Down Records, alla realizzazione della loro prima
produzione sulla lunga distanza. Che poi lunga si fa per dire, dato che il
quartetto olandese comprime e confeziona la propria aggressivitŕ in un lavoro
che non arriva ai trenta minuti di durata.
Gli undici brani qui presenti
assumono dunque le sembianze di fendenti omicidi, che arrivano dritti a
bersaglio con efficacia e precisione, senza perdersi in fronzoli inutili. 'Destined
To Burn' č un disco compatto, corrosivo dall’inizio alla fine e composto da
vere e proprie rasoiate a cavallo tra thrash metal, hardcore e death, con
qualche sporadico accenno alla melodia.
"Suffer Severe",
"Vengeance" e "When Past And Present Collide" sono con
tutta probabilitŕ gli esempi migliori per spiegare la proposta dei Dark
Intentions nei suoi risvolti piů impetuosi. Va detto perň che i risultati
rimangono convincenti anche quando la band solleva il piede dall’acceleratore e
concentra i propri sforzi in direzione di mid tempo meno efferati: č il caso
della conclusiva "Empty Eyes", ma anche della monolitica "Today
Is The Day".
Supportato da suoni piů che
sufficienti e dall’impetuosa prova vocale di Martijn, il presente 'Destined To
Burn', pur senza eccellere per originalitŕ, si merita un voto ampiamente
sufficiente. Ce ne fossero di dischi cosě immediati! Dritti al sodo.

Dark Intentions, aktivan na holandskoj sceni od 2002-e godine. S obzirom da svi
clanovi benda imaju razliciti background, u njihovoj muzickoj formi se oseca
vise razlicitih stilskih uticaja. Karijera im je tekla kontinuiranim tokom.
Prvo su u sopstvenoj reziji 2004-e godine objavili Demo sa tri numere
"Survival Is Not An Option", da bi 2005-e za "Pure & Simple
Records" objavili EP sa 5 numera naziva "Remorse Will Die
Today". Aktuelno ostvarenje "Destined To Burn" je debitantski
full-length koji se na trzistu pojavio 30-tog Juna ove 2008-e godine. Dark
Intentions su sastav koji u izrazajnom smislu kombinuje vise izrazajnih
elemenata, te se njihov pristup moze okarakterisati kao neka vrsta crossovera.
Pri svemu tome moze se reci da su prilicno moderan akt, a njihova izvodjacka
varijanta kombinuje thrash metal sa snaznim 90's hardcore pristupom, ali i
skrivenim death metal detaljima. Pesme su im intenzivne, a ceste promene ritma
i tempa karakterisu kompletan materijal. "Destined To Burn" sa 11
numera i nesto vise od 28 minuta muzike otkriva Holandjane kao bend ubedljiv u
svojoj izvodjackoj postavci i izrazenim stavovima.

Här har vi ett gäng snubbar frĺn
Nederländerna som vevar pĺ med tydliga influenser frĺn sĺväl Hatebreed som
Slayer m.fl. Vi snackar nedstämd neometal med rötterna i NY-hardcoren. Metal
blir ju aldrig min bag men tack vare hardcorestuket sĺ är inte Dark Intentions
helt oävna att lyssna pĺ. Självklart gillar jag det bäst när de vevar pĺ med
klassiska riff i ett rasande tempo men även de tyngre, lĺngsamma partierna
funkar bra eftersom de inte blir för machojobbiga som sĺn här musik har en
tendens att bli. En helt OK platta med andra ord. Betyget kan dock inte bli
högre eftersom det trots allt är lite för mycket metal. Är du sugen pĺ ett
Hatebreed/Chimaira med trashigare sound och lite deathvibbar sĺ skall du helt
klart kolla upp det här gänget.

Eigentlich bin ich nicht der große
Fan von Hardcore, obwohl ich der einen oder anderen Truppe schon etwas
abgewinnen kann, so überraschte es mich umso mehr, dass mich das Debüt von DAKR
INTETIONS richtig begeistern konnte. Dass die bekannten Truppen aus diesem
Genre meist aus den Staaten kommen (HATEBREED / BIOHZARD), ist allgemein
bekannt, aber auch so manch europäisches Land konnte schon Bands dieses Genres
aus dem Boden stampfen und das ganz erfolgreich, so auch in den Niederlanden
(BORN FROM PAIN).
„Suffer Servere“ böllert mit
mächtigem Tempo aus den Boxen und könnte auf der Richterskala sogar Hurrikane
Gustav Konkurrenz machen. Messerscharfe Riffs treffen auf bolzende Beats,
verfeinert mit groovigem Basssound und typischen Hardcore Shouts. Aber
spätestens beim gemäßigten „The Murder“ wird klar, dass DARK INTENTIONS auch
eine gewisse Affinität zum Death Metal hegen, was sich als ziemlich geniale
Kombination herausstellt. Auch Thrash Metal („Vengeance“, „Untouched“) dürften
die Holländer zu genüge hören und auch die ein oder andere Band als Quelle
ihrer Inspiration nutzen. Die Mischung macht's, aber auch der frisch und agil
wirkende Sound, den die noch recht junge Band aus Breda fabrizieren, der im Art
Sound Studio (BORN FROM PAIN) gezaubert wurde, trägt zu meiner Begeisterung
bei. „It Dies Today“ ist dann ein waschechter Death Metal Brecher, stampfend,
böse und Genick brechend schleicht er sich dahin, während das abschließende
„Empty Eyes“ wieder zurück zum Hardcore führt.
Ein Hardcore-Album, das auch von
Death und Thrash Fans gemocht oder vielleicht sogar geliebt werden kann.
Holland hat hier ein ganz heißes Eisen im Feuer, das schleunigst auf Europas
Bühnen exportiert werden sollte! Einziger Schönheitsfehler ist die kurze
Spielzeit von 28 Minuten, die an einem nur so vorbeifliegt, aber ansonsten ein
absolut starkes Debüt.

Dark Intentions propongono sin dagli esordi un hardcore popolato da evidenti
influenze thrash/death metal figlie di band quali Testament, Slayer, Anthrax e
Iron Maiden. Seguono, tra l'ottobre 2003 e il marzo 2004, il primo demo CD e
una serie di live show che contribuiscono a portarli alla ribalta delle
cronache musicali olandesi e non.
Dopo un successivo mini di cinque
brani recensito positivamente su diverse riviste di settore, il gruppo giunge
al primo ed atteso album, il presente "Destined To Burn"; disco
compatto, immediato e corrosivo che decreta la definizione di uno stile
personale individuato e costruito nel corso del tempo attraverso tentativi e
aggiustamenti continui di cui "Suffer Severe", "Vengeance"
e "When Past And Present Collide" sono probabilmente i risultati piů
esplicativi.
Trenta minuti in tutto.
Sufficienti ad assimilare "Destined To Burn", che vede la propria
conclusione con "Empty Eyes", un brano piů soft, ma non per questo
meno convincente, quasi a voler rallentare il ritmo cosě intensamente e brutalmente
accelerato nelle dieci tracce precedenti.

Dark Intentions bracht na een demo
(2004) een een mini-cd (2005) in juni zijn eerste volledige cd uit. Volledig is
in dit geval een klein half uur, maar da's precies lang genoeg om de old school
New York hardcore met metal-invloeden de juiste impact te laten maken. De band
uit Breda brengt elf afwissellende nummers, die wel overwogen zijn opgebouwd
uit snelle riffs en meer groovende stukken. Veel hardcorebands klinken naar
mijn mening nogal obligaat (koortjes, groove) maar Dark Intentions vermijdt dit
en voegt bijvoorbeeld thrash metal-invloeden toe (Holy Words, Whispers).
Hiermee klinkt de band als een kruising van Born From Pain, Biohazard, Slayer
en The Haunted. Frontman Martijn Reurings komt door zijn intense manier van
zingen meer dan eens in de buurt van John Tardy van Obituary.

The guys in Dark Intentions from
Breda, the Netherlands thought it was time to release a proper full length.
Gerard of Deity Down Records, also from Breda, thought the same and offered
them a deal. DI wrote ten songs, and recorded them under supervision of Stefan
van Neerven of Born From Pain. The result is a nice sounding record, not
over-produced or over-compressed. Musically, Dark Intentions serves us a
melange of metalcore (reminiscent of older BFP and the H8000 sound) and thrash
metal. In the slower parts, groovy death metal powerhouses such as Obituary and
Malevolent Creation come to mind, almost inducing me to bang some serious head.
Especially the songs ‘It Dies Today’ and ‘Where Past and Present Collide’
really rock. The filter over the vocals makes me think of early nineties
Entombed and Dismember, which is a good thing. But I have to be honest. Aside
from these highlights, there’s nothing really thrilling about this release.
There’s simply too much filler material on it. But then again, it sounds solid
and not as plastic as many of their peers. So maybe these guys should give all
those groups trying to mould hard music into a product as marketable as Hillary
Duff some credit. They at least make Dark Intentions sound like the real thing.
And because of ‘It Dies Today’, they even get three and a half stars.

Hardcore/Metalcore bands zijn hip
de laatste jaren, en er worden dan ook ontzettend veel albums en demo’s
opgenomen. In het genre duiken er ook tal van Nederlandse bands op. Het Bredase
Dark Intentions bestaat al enige jaren en werkt sinds 2003 hard aan de weg met
een serie van demo’s en EP’s. Anno 2008 presenteren zij dan eindelijk hun
eerste volledige album onder de titel Destined to Burn.
Dit debuut is een alleraardigst
album geworden wat ongeveer een half uur duurt. De elf nummers zijn hard,
agressief en snel. De heren beheersen hun instrumenten en de songs zijn ook wel
aardig van kwaliteit. Misschien dat er wat meer variatie in had gemogen, want
de stortvloed van agressieve klanken wordt soms een beetje eentonig. Het helpt
dan weer dat de nummers vrij kort zijn en het album ook niet al te lang duurt,
want na dit plaatje moet je echt wel even om lucht happen. Destined to Burn is
echter een leuke verrassing tussen alle troep die er uit komt onder de noemer
hardcore/metalcore en is veelbelovend voor wat we nog van Dark Intentions
kunnen verwachten.

Het uit Breda afkomstige Dark
Intentions draait alweer wat jaartjes mee in het metalcore-wereldje, en na een
demo in 2003 en een EP in 2008 is het nu tijd voor de eerste full-length.
Destined To Burn mag er zeker zijn; knalharde metalriffs die met de passie en
agressie van een hardcore band gespeeld worden. Je hoort invloeden van bands
als Biohazard, Hatebreed, Testament en Slayer en toch weet Dark Intentions er
een eigen draai aan te geven en dat is op zich knap in een toch wel uitgemolken
genre. Nu is het niet zo dat de band muzikaal gezien erg origineel is, maar ze
bezitten wel iets van eigenwijsheid waardoor ze positief opvallen.
Minpunt: de layout van de CD had
wat spannender gekund.
Pluspunt: de vettigheid druipt uit
de speakers.

Dass Holländer ab und an guten
Fussball spielen können ist uns allen bekannt. Dass sie aber auch fetten
HardCore zocken können, haben BORN FROM PAIN schon mehrere Male unter Beweis gestellt.
Nun wollen auch die Newcomer DARK INTENTIONS der Welt zeigen, was sie drauf
haben. Unterstützt werden sie hierbei von Stefan van Nerven, der auch BORN FROM
PAIN erfolgreich produzierte. Die 2003 gegründete Band will mit ihrem ersten
Longplayer "Destined To Burn" keine Trends setzen und "just
aggressive" dem Zuhörer einen vor's Fressbrett knallen...
Machen wirs kurz: Schon nach
kurzem Anspielen des Longplayers wird einem klar: Der Schuss geht gewaltigst
nach hinten los! Die Holländer zeigen genau das, was sich schon seit Jahren wie
ein ekelhaftes Geschwür durch den HardCore frisst: Eintönigkeit, 0815-Rhythmen,...
Abwechslung Fehlanzeige! Songs wie "Suffer Severe", "The
Murder" oder "Vengeance" strotzen nur so vor Einheitsbrei, dass
einem dabei fast schlecht wird. Immer wieder hat man das Gefühl, dass man dies
oder jenes schon mal irgendwo anders gehört hat. Aber es ist nicht alles
schlecht, auch wenn es sich so anhören mag!
Im Song "Holy Wars"
zeigen die Jungs, dass es auch anders gehn kann und ballern nach einem netten
Break aus vollen Rohren! So macht HardCore Spaß! Interessant wirds für den
geneigten Zuhörer immer dann, wenn das Quartett den Pfad der "Tugend"
verlässt. Anspieltipps wären da z.B. "It dies today" oder "When
past and present collides", die, im Mid-Tempo gehalten, einfach überzeugen
können.
Kurzum: Ich bin enttäuscht von
dem, was die Jungs hier abliefern. Da hätte man eindeutig mehr draus machen
können, eher müssen! Auch Produktionstechnisch ist die Scheibe ein Griff ins
Klo. Die Bassspuren haben keinen Saft und keine Kraft und plätschern nur so vor
sich hin. Mal sehn, ob's die Jungs das nächste Mal packen.

Een combinatie van metal en
hardcore wil nogal eens eenheidsworst opleveren. Nog steeds maken bands zich
schuldig aan Slayer-riff op Slayer-riff, gekrijs in de rondte en een overvloed
aan breakdowns. Het uit Breda afkomstige Dark Intentions heeft op dit debuut al
wel een eigen geluid. Vooral de aangename headbangtempo's, de gebalanceerde
productie en de overtuigende vocalen zijn daarvoor verantwoordelijk. Frontman
Martijn Reurings heeft op zijn beste momenten wel wat weg van Martin van
Drunen, de ziekelijk extreem klinkende frontman van Asphyx en voorheen van
Pestilence. Dark Intentions neigt dan ook meer naar metal dan naar hardcore.
Dan hebben we het wel over metal van het agressieve soort, want melodie en
pakkende refreinen worden op "Destined To Burn" zoveel mogelijk
gemeden. Dark Intentions is heavy zonder poespas.

De band Dark Intentions moet tot
de dag van vandaag genoegen nemen met kleine optredens in de regio van Breda.
Na een demo in 2003 en een EP in 2005, is er een onlangs Destined To Burn
uitgebracht. Dit debuut moet voor nationale bekendheid gaan zorgen.
Met dank aan inspiratiebronnen als
Biohazard, Hatebreed en Slayer krijgen we elf nummers aan muziek. Het kleine
half uur aan metal is helaas niet erg verfrissend - en op momenten zelfs
eentonig. De jongens zijn erg goed met de voet op het gaspedaal, maar weet niet
de rust terug te brengen wanneer nodig. Dit maakt de album perfect voor de
trashliefhebber, maar minder toegankelijk voor de mensen die iets verder van
het genre staan. De band bestaat zes jaar en dit moet Dark Intentions op zijn
best zijn, hun visitekaartje voor de concertzalen. Hopelijk zijn de vier
jongens er inderdaad erg trots op en vliegen de exemplaren momenteel de deur
uit, ik ben er echter een beetje sceptisch over.
Niet alleen buiten Nederland, maar
ook binnen de grenzen zijn er bands die dit genre beter kunnen brengen. De
potentie is er, dat is iets wat die elf nummer dan wel weer duidelijk laten

Thrash-Hardcore fans out there! -Dark Intentions- from the Netherlands released
their first full length album.Is called - Destined to burn - and it's their
first official work.Since 2002 ,that they were formed they have only released a
Demo and an EP and it was about time they start creating full albums.
Their new work is fantastic. It
combines Thrash , Hardcore and Death Metal and makes you wanna stage dive
inside your room!!The vocals are between Thrash - Hardcore but with a lot of
Death influences.There are also some parts with reverb that reminds me vocals
of the old Tiamat that i love.Raging , brutal with a sense of passion.The
guitars are full of Thrash-core riffs and many ideas in the solo parts.The bass
is following the raging double bass beats and filling the sound while the
drummer is playing very nice Thrash-core themes.The production is fantastic ,
with great work shown in the recordings of the vocals.The cover is atmospheric
and it shows a photo of a ruin , dark and aborted.
-Dark Intentions - are a great
band.I am really happy that these Hardcore Thrashers managed to release their
first full length album.They play their favorite music and they add also some
Dark elements with their own Dutch way.They have a lot of ideas and they seem
fresh and thirsty for action.I totaly recommend them for fans of Thrash-Core
scene with Death Metal also tastes.

Het mocht even duren, maar aan
elke stapel te recenseren cd's komt een einde. Onderop die stapel lag de schijf
van Dark Intentions zonder daarmee iets te suggereren. Een cd die daar al sinds 2008 bivakkeert en uiteindelijk ten
onrechte, want je kan het slechter treffen. Dit Bredase gezelschap
schotelt namelijk een leuke portie
metalcore voor. Niet dat we dit nog niet eerder geproefd hadden, maar dat doet
er niet altijd toe. We hebben het over een behoorlijk uitgemolken subgenre, dus
verwacht ik ook geen gekke dingen. De plaat is zoals het hoort lekker fel en
rauw en zanger Martijn sluit hier goed op aan. De band noemt het zelf
thrash-metalcore, maar zit toch voornamelijk in de hardcore hoek. Het thrash
element mis ik, en dat had juist voor wat meer afwisseling kunnen zorgen. Qua
snelheden gaat nergens echt het gaspedaal er op. De breakdowns worden verder
gedoseerd en niet te pas en onpas ingezet.
Ik zou vooral het woord degelijk
willen gebruiken. Er gebeuren nu eenmaal weinig verassingen, maar over de hele
linie is het wel lekker om naar te luisteren en ik kan me voorstellen dat dit
live ook het nodige los maakt.
