Persistense, a contraction
of the words 'to persist' and 'intense' was founded in 2000 in Den Bosch, the
Netherlands. In the beginning they called their style: 'Swingthrash'. I haven't
got a clue what ingredients it takes to play swingthrash, but the band decided
to change their style by introducing more power and groovy elements.
I would describe this
record as a kind of groovy death metal with thrash elements and intelligent
lyrics. The low grunting of Stefan van Vught has some similarities with
Martin van Drunen (Asphyx, Hail Of Bullets, ex-Pestilence). Stefan does not
sound quite as sick and over the top as Martin, but there are resemblances. The
band has played quite many gigs over the last years and to open for Testament
at the famous Dynamo Club in Eindhoven has been the highlight so far. This
shows that the band has a big potential, you have to do
something good to support them.
If you need some musical
comparisons, Lamb of God, Hail of Bullets (especially the song
"Doomsday") and early Death are some I'd mention. But you should add
a lot of groove ("Sick World") and thrash-riffs
too. Just listen to "In Blood and Heart" (Testament kind-of
riffs?) and you understand what I mean.
I know I keep saying this
repeatedly, but again this is a Dutch debut album (and that's
not because I'm Dutch) that is not inferior to a lot of foreign
bands, on the contrary. A serious act to be reckoned with in the years
ahead.

Als je
als opener van het legendarische Testament mag fungeren doe je iets goed. Zo
ook het uit Den Bosch afkomstige Persistense. Afgelopen maart waren zij het die
de aftrap gaven van de show te Dynamo, Eindhoven. Zoiets komt doorgaans niet
uit de lucht vallen en ook in het geval van Persistense was dat allerminst het
geval. Bijna tien jaar geleden begon de band immers al met musiceren. Dat dit
niet altijd even makkelijk ging bleek wel uit het feit dat Persistense in 2005
werd ontbonden na de klassieke bezettingsproblemen. Zanger Stefan van Vugt liet
het er echter niet bij zitten en wist gemotiveerde musici rond zich heen te verzamelen.
Deze arbeid heeft geresulteerd in de 2008 promo die mocht rekenen op veelal
goede kritieken. In 2009 kwam daar dus de eerdergenoemde Testament show bij en
zojuist heeft Persistense ook het eerste volwaardige studioalbum uitgebracht,
genaamd 'In blood and heart.' Dit debuut is overigens opgenomen in de
befaamde Exess studio.
Over het
album:
De
eerste van Persistense is een groeiplaat. Dat kan ik na meer dan twintig
luisterbeurten toch wel concluderen. De stijl van dit Nederlandse gezelschap
laat zich niet zo makkelijk grijpen en het duurde dan ook even voordat ik er
een mening over kon vormen. 'In blood and heart' staat vol met gevarieerde
thrash/death composities waarbij met name de heavy riffs en zang de sfeer
bepalen. De plaat zit simpelweg erg goed in elkaar en zijn er in mijn optiek
genoeg originele invalshoeken te vinden die het album de moeite waard maken. Ik
ben met name erg gecharmeerd van de tweede helft van het album. Vooral de
nummers 'Overcome' en Progress' vanwege de vette breaks en riffs en het epische
titelnummer 'In blood and heart.' Vooral in deze laatste track komen de
schrijverskwaliteiten van Persistense goed naar voren. Een struikelblok blijft
voor mij echter de zang welke soms ietwat eentonig overkomt. Zonde, want de
muziek leent zich uitstekend voor vocale variatie. De intensiteit waarmee het
gezongen wordt maakt echter veel goed.
Conclusie:
Persistense
heeft met 'In blood and heart' een interessante en gevarieerde metal schijf
afgeleverd. Een schijf die de moeite waard is en waarbij de potentie van de
band goed naar voren komt. Of dit album zal weten op te vallen tussen alle
andere releases in het genre is nog maar de vraag, maar ik zal de band zeker
live en op plaat blijven volgen. Want als ze deze lijn voort kunnen zetten zou
het volgende album wel eens erg interessant kunnen worden…De liefhebbers van
Thrash en/of death metal kan ik in ieder geval aanraden om dit album eens te
checken.

De oplettende lezer zal denken dat
de naam van deze Bossche band verkeerd gespeld is. Toch klopt dat niet, want
Persistense is een samenstelling van ‘to persist’ (doorzetten, volharden) en
‘intense’ (intens). Dat zijn twee termen die uitstekend bij deze band passen.
Na veel problemen met de besetting raakt zanger en bandleider Stefan in 2005
zijn voltallige band kwijt, maar na veel zoekwerk slaagde hij er toch in vier
gelijkgestemden te vinden om een doorstart mee te maken. Het resultaat is deze
in Excess opgenomen eerste volledige CD, waarop de muziek absoluut als ‘intens’
omschreven kan worden. Vanaf het eerste nummer ‘Further’ tot aan afsluiter
‘Sick World’ krijgen we een spervuur aan Slayeriaanse riffs te verwerken, waar
de enigszins monotone, maar lekker in het gehoor liggende vocalen van Stefan
perfect bij passen. Het is echter wat te kort door de bocht om de muziek van
Persistense a;s ‘death/thrash’ te omschrijven, want de band laat ook duidelijke
groovemetal-en Pantera-invloeden horen. ‘In Blood And Heart’ is een lekkere
plaat met een degelijke productie.

Het Nederlandse Persistense biedt
ons death metal uit zijn eigen smaak. Hun nummers zijn dynamisch en melodisch,
op sommige momenten zelfs ietsje overdreven. Cleane zang zou echt een
versterking zijn. Nummers als “Doomsday” zouden er beter uitkomen met een
diepere zangstijl, zodat het gevoel beter doorkomt bij de luisteraar. De
titeltrack is het langste, het meest veranderlijke en het meest indrukwekkende
nummer van het album. Het minpunt gaat naar de songteksten die veel te zwak
blijven, terwijl de compositie zonder vocals echt goed verwerkt is.

Brutal
music from The Netherlands keeps coming in constantly, thus I´m not amazed to
hold yet another brutal records in my hands from quite a new band called
Persistense. Well, to be exact, the band has been around for nine year already,
but apart from a demo entitled "Persistense" in 2004, you won´t find
anything, up till now, with the debut release "In Blood And Heart".
Just on the margin, a short note on the bandname itself, it´s not written in a
wrong way, rather a combination of the two words "persistent" and
"intense". The group fell apart in 2005, but vocalist Stefan managed
to gather some passionate musicians to records a 3-song Promo in 2008.
So how could you describe their sound? It´s some groove Thrash/Death, that is
not presenting the usual kind of lyrics, but meaningful lyrics, since the band
stresses, that it´s important to them to have recognizable songs, with decent
structure and lyrics that fit the whole thing. If you like the vocals of bands
like Pestilence or Asphyx, you´ll dig those on "In Blood And Heart"
as well, since there´s similarities between the ones of Stefan and
aforementioned bands - monotonous in a way, something which some people will
surely dislike, but it fits the music, thus no complaints here. Thanks to the
groovyness of the songs, it´s a pretty smooth listening and that makes the
whole record quite enjoyable. One thing is for sure, there´s no really bad song
from the opener "Further" till "Sick World, that is ending the
album - brutalities and pretty headbangable riffs from beginning till end so to
say.
Persistense surely didn´t invent the wheel, but are surely worth being checked
out, since they deliver some quality material, along with nice ideas for songs
and don´t have to hide from (debut) bands in this sector from elsewhere. Give
them a try!

Ideje lesz megismerkednünk egy újabb Deity Down Records kiadvánnyal, a holland Persistense-szel. A
csapat Hertogenboschban alakult 2000-ben, rá egy évvel kiadtak egy demót, majd
2004-ben a Persistense
címre hallgató EP-t, aztán 2008-ban volt egy promó, idén pedig itt a
várva-várt debüt. Kérdés mennyien várták, hiszen a holland horda eddig túl sok
mindent nem tett le arra a bizonyos asztalra, az In Blood And Heart 45
percével viszont akár még szakácsok is lehetnek… a hangzás rideg és dinamikus;
nem kicsit hajaz a svéd old school death metalokra, sok helyen érzem a zenében
és a hangzásban is azt a ridegséget, amik a korai Unleashed
lemezeken feszültek, s ehhez még vegyük hozzá Stefan kietlen
hörgését. A külsőségek akár egy Relapse termékként is eladhatóak
lehetnének, az eddigi legprofibb designú (Ronald Visser) Deity Down Records termék! És
akkor lássuk milyen is a zene!
Szép kis talány, hiszen lényegében thrash-death, de ennyire nem egyszerű a
helyzet, hiszen a komplex dalok és darálások rengeteg színben mutatkoznak meg.
Akadnak nagyon dallamos és szólókkal megtámogatott részletek, melyek egy az
egyben Edge
of Sanity / At The Gates és későbbi Carcass
vonalból építkeznek, melyekhez vegyük hozzá a súlyos riffeket és beindulásokat,
amelyek Gorefest, Benediction
halmazból Aztán bizonyos témák egy az egyben a God Dethroned, Testament (The Gathering idejéből),
Arch Enemy, Death kombó,
ahogy a Slayer, Pestilence, Holy Moses, Bolt Thrower és a Cancer neve is
fel-felbukkan. Aztán találhatóak benne olyan modern elemek is, amelyek
mostanában divatosak, de az egyensúly véletlenül sem borul fel – csak, mint
témázgatások kerülnek elő. Ha nagyon egyszerűen akarnám taglalni a Persistense
zenéjét, akkor ez egy komplex és nem a megszokott melodikus death metal egyik
súlyosabb formája. Tökéletes leállásokat és csodálatos szólókat kapunk
mindamellett, hogy az alapvetően thrash centruált riffelgetés, valahogy
mindig death metal jellegű lesz, progresszív tépelődéssel mellékhatás gyanánt.
Az Intro
klasszikus zenére való rászaggatása, pedig a Metallica – S&M világát
idézte fel bennem (s nem csak itt, némely téma erősen régi Metallica szerű)
illetve aki ismeri a Rosicrucian 94-es No Cause For Celebration lemezét,
annak azt írom, az In
Blood And Heart nagyon olyan, csak modernebb és death metal
orientáltabb!
Rengeteg a hatás, és még tetten is érhetőek, mégis valahogy képes elvarázsolni
ez a magabiztos massza, mely rengeteg rejtett értékkel indul hadba, hihetetlen
színeket kever ki és még vászonra is tudja vinni úgy, hogy a kapott kép
kielégítsen. Remekmű, még akkor is, ha az egyediség csoszog, sőt! Lehet éppen
ezért van meg a varázsa, mert hibrid módon nagyon jó alapokból építkezett, és a
hallgató akaratlanul is belemerül a Persistense forró föld alatti masszájába,
ami a felszínen rideg, kemény és sivár.

Time to introduce yet another Deity Down Records release, the Dutch Persistense.
The band was formed in 2000, in Hertogenbosch. A year later they released a
demo and in 2004 an EP entitled Persistense, followed by a promo
release in 2008 and this year their much anticipated debut. It’s hard to tell
whether or not lots of people were looking forward to it, after all the Dutch
horde didn’t really bring that something new to the table. However, with the 45
minute-long In Blood and Heart they might as well start cooking. The
cold and dynamic sound resembles Swedish old school death metals, I often feel the
rigidity of the early Unleashed albums (in addition to Stefan’s
bleak screaming) reflected in both the music and sound. The layout could just
as well be a Relapse product, one of the most professional Deity
Down Records (Ronald Visser) designs so far! But let’s take a
look at the music.
A neat little enigma, since it is essentially trash-death but it is more
difficult to categorize, after all the complex songs and grindings are
displayed in various aspects. There are very melodic parts (with guitar solos)
to be found, directly drawing from bands like Edge of Sanity, At
the Gates or the later Carcass, mixed with Gorefest
- and Benediction -like heavy riffs and breakdowns.
And of course other songs are direct combinations of God Dethroned,
Testament (around The Gathering), Arch Enemy,
Death. Also, the name Slayer, Pestilence,
Holy Moses, Bolt Thrower and Cancer often
comes to mind. There are fashionable modern elements in their music, but the
balance of always carefully maintained – they appear only for a moment. If I
wanted to be very simplistic in descibing the music of Persistense,
I would say it is a complex, not the least bit ordinary melodic death metal,
one of the heavier sorts. They give us perfect rests and wonderful solos in
addition to the fact that the essentially trash-centered riffs almost always
turn into death metal, with a little progressive pondering as a side effect.
The throbbing mixed with classical music in the Intro evokes the mood
of Metallica’s S&M (but not just here, some riffs
are extremely old Metallica-like), and for those who are
familiar with the 1994 No Cause for Celebration album of Rosicrucian,
I have to say that In Blood and Heart is a lot like that only more
modern and more death metal oriented!
The
influences are countless and recognizable, still somehow you can’t help to be
enchanted by this self-confident mass with lots of hidden values. Not only can
they produce unbelievable colors, but they just as good at painting a picture
that can satisfy the listener. A masterpiece, even with a bit of uncertainty
surrounding its uniqueness. Maybe that is exactly its charm, a hybrid made up
of great ingredients, that makes the listener involuntarily sink into the
burning-hot underground mass of Persistense, which is cold,
hard and desolate on the surface.

Bossche Persistense mag zich tot nieuweling in de Deity Down Records stal
rekenen, en dat alleen al is een compliment op zichzelf waard. Bij Deity Down
tekenen ze namelijk uitsluitend bands waar men zelf in gelooft en die men ook
al verschillende keren live aan het werk heeft gezien, en dus kun je nu al
zeggen dat Persistense zijn mannetje wel staat.
Ook op ‘In Blood And Heart’ maakt dit vijftal een degelijke indruk. Songs zoals
‘Overcome’ en ‘Infinite Madness’ zitten vol met ferme riffs, catchy breaks,
hier en daar een verrassende wending en de nodige agressie. Dit zijn van die
typische songs die goed in het gehoor liggen en die uitnodigen tot meerdere
luisterbeurten. Ook het opzwepende ‘Progress’ en de afsluiter en met veel
variatie doorspekte ‘Sick World’ laten meteen horen dat deze jongens een
behoorlijk pot kunnen thrashen.
Maar het is wat mij betreft nog niet bij elke track prijs. Tijdens opener
‘Further’ krijg ik soms het idee dat men nog teveel stukjes muziek aan elkaar
heeft geplakt en het iets meer naar langzame death metal neigende ‘Doomsday’ is
niet spannend genoeg. Ook de vrij lange titel song weet mijn aandacht niet
gedurende de hele rit erbij te houden en dat is jammer. De productie van Hans
Pieters in de Excess is vrij standaard en wellicht dat iets meer avontuur in de
sound het album nog beter had doen laten klinken. Nu heb ik bij iedere luisterbeurt
telkens het “dit is wel goed maar ook niet bijzonder” gevoel en dat terwijl er
misschien wel nog meer in had gezeten.
Conclusie: ‘In Blood And Heart’ is een behoorlijk visite kaartje geworden, een
debuut album waar men mee verder kan.

Erich: These guys from Persistense are the new ones in the line
of Deity Down Records bands, and this fact is worth a compliment for itself. At
Deity Down they only sign bands in which they really believe, and only after
seeing them live a couple of times. So it is already fair enough to say that
Persistense knows how to present themselves.
Also on ‘In Blood And Heart’ these five dudes from The Netherlands make a
decent impression. Songs like ‘Overcome’ and ‘Infinite Madness’ are packed with
firm riffs, catchy breaks, every now and then a surprising twist and the needed
aggression. These are songs that are very enjoyable to listen to and invite you
to press play once more. The up whipping ‘Progress’ and the last album track
and filled with a lot of variation one ‘Sick World’ show that this bands knows
how to thrash.
But unfortunately not every song did the trick for me. During opener ‘Further’
I sometimes get the feeling that too many parts of the song are just glued
together and the more as slower death metal sounding ‘Doomsday’ is not exciting
enough. Also the rather long title track cannot hold my attention during the
whole song. The production by Hans Pieters from the Excess Studio is a bit
standard and maybe with some more adventure in the sound the whole album would
have even made a bigger impact. Now I have every time when I listen to ‘In
Blood And Heart’ the feeling that “this is good, but nothing special” and this
is a pity, because maybe there was more to get out of this effort.
Conclusion: ‘In Blood And Heart’ is a decent debut album that gives Persistense
enough possibilities for the future.

Nuevamente
viajamos hasta Holanda, a manos de Deity Down Rec, para presentaros a unos
debutantes. Su nombre es PERSISTENSE (está escrito mal a
posta) y se formaron en el 2000. En el 2004 lanzaron un ep llamado "Swingthrash"
pero multiples problemas con la line-up llevaron a la banda a la desaparición
en el 2005. Su vocalista Stefan Van Vugt decidió volver a retomar el proyecto
con nuevos músicos un poco después pero modernizando el thrash metal que habían
tocado en el pasado. Fruto de ello lanzaron una promo en el 2008 para buscar
contrato y tras conseguirlo, se liaron con la grabación de este "In
Blood And Heart", en los estudios Excess, que el sello ya
lanzó hace unas semanas.
A pesar del pobre bagaje en cuanto a grabaciones, la banda se ha mostrado muy
activa en directo y han podido acompańar a formaciones más establecidas como
DEVIOUS, PLEURISY, XYSTUS o los gigantes TESTAMENT (entre otras) en sus más de
50 actuaciones con la nueva formación.
Sabiendo que a Gerard, el dueńo de Deity Down, le gusta mucho el death en su
vertiente más técnica y si puede ser del brutal mejor aún, me pilla un poco por
sorpresa la edición de esta nueva banda, ya que esperaba un lanzamiento
bastante más cańero de lo que me he encontrado al darle al play de mi
reproductor. Aquí nos vamos a topar con una voz semigutural (como si Max
Cavalera estuviera ronco) y unos riffs de la escuela thrash moderna, siempre
ejecutado con una excelente técnica pero sin marear al oyente con virtuosismos
innecesarios en el thrash.
Tras la "Intro" instrumental, la formación
comienza su viaje con la ochentera "Further"
plagada de excelentes ritmos. En "The Reality"
hacen buen acopio de los riffs entrecortados y técnicos con la batería más
acelerada y la inclusión, sorpresiva, de varios pasajes instrumentales más
propios de una banda heavy (excelente la guitarra solista).
Como si de una banda sonora para una manifestación antisistema se tratara nos
llega "Infinite Madness", plagada en su
inicio de sirenas de policia y voces/gritos bajo un manto metalero. Una vez
comienza a asentarse el tema hay que echar mano de un death muy liviano y en su
vertiente melódica mezclado con buen thrash ochentero para definir este
excelente tema. Muy buenas variaciones rítmicas (con algunos pasajes muy
técnicos), gran sonido pero la voz no me acaba de convencer del todo (demasiado
bruta para la música que practican).
"Overcome" vuelve a llevarnos por terrenos
entrecortados en muchos pasajes, aunque la formación también sabe apretar los
dientes y soltarnos otros mucho más acelerados. Destacan sobremanera las
excelentes guitarras, esa asesina batería en los momentos más movidos (doble
bombo echando humo!!) y la zona central en la que juegan con el doom y el death
melódico. Pasamos a la agresiva "Progress"
con riffs muy estáticos y repetitivos durante la mayor parte del tiempo, aunque
le metan otros más técnicos para dar variedad (en plan thrash o death, según
les dé), y esa jodida voz metiendo miedo ahí delante, siguiendo una onda más
apunkarrada aunque gutural. Yo me quedo con sus guitarras, sin duda.
Comenzando
en plan semi-acústico, típico de las "baladas" thrashicas, tenemos la
misteriosa "Doomsday", un cambiante corte que
va variando hacia terrenos más agresivos según se avanza en su escucha. Como en
casi todos los cortes hay que felicitar a la banda por lo bien que desarrollan
sus ricos riffs.
En los últimos compases del álbum tenemos primero la extensa y cambiante "In
Blood And Heart", a ritmo death/thrash saltarín en sus
primeros compases para pasar a un enmarańado y malévolo thrash ochentero (en
plan muro sónico). Como cabría esperar durando más de siete minutos, la
formación tiene tiempo de enredar todo lo que quiere y más, y dentro de esos
"enredos" me gustaría destacar la bonita zona acústica central (con
solista exquisita por encima) y los enormes y melódicos pasajes que se curran
tras ella (de un gran valor, creedme).
La última exhalación lleva por título "Sick World"
y nos llega en plan thrash técnico, guardando el toque ochentero a manos de la
línea vocal, mientras en lo instrumental juegan con el death/thrash melódico,
con otra demostración de calidad a manos de sus guitarristas, o recreando
sonoridades asuecadas. Me gusta.
Una banda cumplidora estos PERSISTENSE; se mueven con soltura
por los pantanosos terrenos que hay entre el thrash y el death, tienen las
ideas claras y las han sabido plasmar perfectamente en estos temas pero es que
esa dichosa voz no acaba de cuadrarme. Si te atreves con ellos, encontrarás un
buen puńado de temas en los que toman vida propia esas tremendas guitarras
(tanto solistas como rítmicas), dotando al trabajo de un interés que sin ellas
se vería muy mermado. Visita sus webs y decide.

Na een
roerige tijd lijkt voor de death metal band Persistense
weer alles op rolletjes te lopen. Sinds 2000 probeert deze band uit Den Bosch
al voet aan wal te krijgen, maar alhoewel hun studiowerk werd gewaardeerd kwam
het er maar steeds niet van. Aan het einde van 2005 viel de band zelfs helemaal
uit elkaar, maar zanger Stefan van Vught liet dit niet zomaar over zich
heenkomen. Na enig speurwerk had hij weer vier andere muzikanten om zich heen
verzameld die het eerder dit jaar zelfs voor elkaar wisten te krijgen om te
mogen openen voor het machtige Testament in de Dynamo. Ook klopte Deity Down
Records aan met een platencontract en het gevolg is een 9 nummers tellend
schijfje.
Om nou te zeggen dat het vernieuwend is: nee. Om nou te zeggen dat het extra
technisch is: nee. Om nou te zeggen dat ze qua bruutheidgehalte op eenzame
hoogte staan binnen de scene in Nederland: nee. Wat deze plaat dan toch de
moeite waard maakt? Het heerlijke intense gebeuk met een goede groove en hier
en daar perfect getimede melodische tussenstukken. Zo heeft 'The Reality'
gitaarpartijen om je vingers bij af te likken om vervolgens subtiel over te
gaan in het intro van 'Infinite Madness'. Dit is een van de songs waar het
vijftal erg effectief gebruik weet te maken van samples. Verder ook een
pluspuntje voor het onheilspellende, en vooral heel filmische, intro van de
gehele plaat.
Hier en daar doet de muziek wel wat bekend aan. Zo doet het begin van
'Doomsday' erg denken aan 'Abysmal' van het Zweedse The Haunted. Echt storend
is het echter niet, want dit soort momenten hebben gelukkig niet de overhand.
Al met al ziet de toekomst er inderdaad rooskleurig uit voor Persistense. Of
moeten we "zwart, donker en duister" zeggen?

Wanneer heel je band het bijltje
erbij neergooit en je als frontman zijnde alleen achter blijft, hoe groot is dan
de kans dat je niet bij de pakken neer gaat zitten en toch nog lekker doorgaat?
Als je groep Persistense heet –een samenvoeging van de Engelse woorden voor
‘doorzetten’ en ‘intens’- heel groot. Stefan van Vugt, de man die het eind 2005
overkwam, bleek dan ook daadwerkelijk over voldoende doorzettingsvermogen te
beschikken, deed de bandnaam eer aan, en vond in drummer Bram Trommelen,
gitarist Jacques Maas, bassist Mark de Haas en gitarist Ralf van der Horst een
nieuwe line-up voor zijn groep Persistense. Eind 2008 verscheen al een
veelbelovende promo met een aantal tracks en die leverde de heren niet alleen
een deal op met het Nederlandse Deity Down Records, maar ook een plek als
support voor Testament in Dynamo. En nu is daar dan die full-length, waarop ook
de tracks van die eerder verschenen prima promo te vinden zijn. De mix van bij
vlagen groovende thrash, death metal en de kwade grom van van Vugt met zijn
(maatschappij)kritische teksten steekt op ‘In Blood And Heart’ uitermate goed
in elkaar, met als uitschieters ‘Sick World’, ‘Overcome’ en ‘In Blood And
Heart’. Het maakt van Persistense één van de interessantere bands van eigen
bodem in dit genre. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, zeggen ze dan in
het buitenland. Zelden ging die vlieger zo op voor een band.

Hm, ja, diese Niederländer. Dort
gibt es ja anscheinend mehr Bands wie Kühe, Wahnsinn. Seitdem Jahre 2000
wirbeln die Jungs herum und machen nicht nur Den Bosch unsicher.
"Swingthrash" hieß das erste Album, welches ich nicht kenne, aber vom
Titel her auch nicht unbedingt haben muss. Allerdings sollen sie hier auf ihrem
zweiten Album den Stil verändert haben, da bin ich denn ja mal gespannt. Die
Burschen sind wohl von vielen Bands und von vielen Musikrichtungen beeinflusst
worden und das hört man durchaus heraus. Im Grunde ihres Herzen zocken sie
Thrash Metal, aber dieses absolut abwechslungsreich und teilweise verspielt.
Deathige Elemente sind auch dabei, manchmal schleppend wie bei
"Doomsday". Die Burschen ziehen aber auch ganz schön gerne die Zügel
an und dann gefallen sie mir echt gut. Sie experiementieren ganz schön herum
und nehmen auch vor aussermetallischen Klängen , so wie bei "Infinite
Madness" keine Rücksicht. Die Vocals finde ich ein wenig merkwürdig, ist
kein Gegrowle, aber auch kein thrashiges Shouting. Nicht schlecht, nur
gewöhnungsbedürftig. Die Burschen sind mir dann manchmal schon zu verspielt und
man hat manchmal das Gefühl, sie wissen nicht genau, was sie wollen. Technisch
auf hohem Niveau und sie bauen auch immer wieder richtig heavige und eingängige
Riffs ( Mittelpart von Overcome, sehr geil) mit ein, aber dann sind sie wieder
verspielt. Einstellen kann man sich bei denen auf nichts. Bin da eher
gespaltener Meinung. Überzeugt euch selber!

Another
debuting band in the world of metal music. Persistense, who come from Holland,
have released their first full length album 'In Blood and Heart'. The band's
name is spelled the right way, because it comes from two words: Persist and
intense. Blood, heart and intense... Against all the suppositions, Persistense
do not play metalcore.
Starting
with a melancholic intro, that grows into a march, could indicate anything.
'Further' kind of surprises; it is a hybrid of death and thrash metal, that could
be from the beginning of 1990s. Heck, it definitely owes quite a lot to earlier
Thanatos. And the vocals heavily remind of Asphyx/Hail Of Bullets man Martin
Van Drunen. 'Further' is a multiparted yet dynamic composition. Interesting
twist after the detached intro... 'The Reality' hits more thrashing gear, and
also features Gothenburg style melodic guitar work. Again, the song's dynamics
work, because slow parts fit in well. 'Infinite Madness' gets thumbs up for
that reason, too, and good, driving rhythm changes, but its Gothenburg melodies
are totally stale. Thankfully that part is heard only twice. 'Overcome' with
its slow-to-blast-beating fluctutation cannot be saved from being patchy, but
it does feature some cool old school melodies and riffing. Generally, there is
a clear groove factor in some parts throughout the album. Seems like the album
is losing its drive. 'Doomsday' presents non-distorted intro, that tries too
hard to be like 'Welcome Home (Sanitarium)'. The band have run out of tricks
and the vocals are totally one-dimensional throughout the album. After a good
start, the album starts to drag, and pretty badly too. 'Sick World's faster
thrashing comes too late...
The
production work smells of old, partly in a good way, but the guitar tone could
be so much more ripping, and generally the sound could be punchier. The bass
drum sounds so flat it makes me angry! By the way, the synth is only heard on
the 'Intro'. The performances are okay, but still one waits much more from
guitar solos and those calmer, more "beautiful" parts.
Persistense
have potential. However, 'In Blood and Heart' feels halfhearted as a whole.
More eventful songs wouldn't hurt either. What I like about this is its feeling
of the yore and Central European style (minus the Gothenburg stuff, of course),
like mentioned before. Just keep it going and we'll hear next time how it comes
out.

band PERSISTENSE was formed in 2000. The name is an amalgam of the words “to
persist” and “intense” and they called their music “swingthrash” early on.
After a restart around vocalist Stefan van Vugt in 2005 they deal in metal with
numerous influences. The band wants to create memorable songs and since their
2008 demo landed them a contract they must be on the right path.
The intro is soft and hard to pinpoint to a specific genre. “Further” is
melodic thrash, with some extra added energy from Bram Trommelen´s drumming.
“Stefan´s vocals are rawer than the music, but without being annoying it feels
lightly produced. The guitar work courtesy of Jacques Maas and Ralf van der
Horst are slightly old-fashioned but highly melodic and entertaining. The
feeling I get from “The Reality” probably that of the ANTHRAX of old with
better production. But Stefan is not trying to be Belladonna. Amusing enough
the vocals fits the whole sound picture. The guitar patterns are a real treat,
and a threat to many bands no doubt. They provide PERSISTENSE with a touch of
ARCH ENEMY. They go thrashing more in “Infinite Madness”, but the vocals do not
permit any Bay Area vibes. Still I wish that Ed Repka had done this cover – to
attract the right buyers. The title track thunders away, and stays in between
thrash and modern forceful metal. PERSISTENCE keeps it together, apart from
“Doomsday” where the disadvantages of the chosen vocal style are most audible.
But, as always, hard Dutch metal rules ok.

the band. However vocalist Stefan van Vugt had other ideas and he immediately
set about forming a new line up his vision, 2008 saw the emergence of a three
track promo CD and now comes the band's first full length release In Blood
and Heart.
Thankfully
the idea of "swingthrash" has been binned and what we have instead is
nine tracks of straight ahead, good old fashioned thrash metal with a few
modern twists thrown in for good measure. Whilst Stefan's growling vocals are
strong and in your face, it's the twin guitar pairing of Jacques Maas and Ralf
van der Horst that take immediate control of Persistence and with tracks like
the tight and well constructed "Infinite Madness" and slow building
"Progress" both are allowed to strut their stuff to great effect.
Bludgeoning riffs and sharp guitar breaks abound and with the solid backing of
bassist Mark de Haas this is a force to be reckoned with.
Drummer
Bram Trommelen has a nice range of light and dark in his playing and this
ability to lull one minute and rampage the next helps raise Persistence above
some of the more run of the mill bands currently ploughing this furrow.
The
title track "In Blood and Heart" is one of the strongest on show and
really finds the band in full manic flow. It's sparkling guitars and drums
complement another strong vocal from Vugt and along with the slightly less
frenetic "Further" show the band at their best.
Considering
that In Blood and Heart is the band's debut proper there is much to
commend here. It may not set the world alight with innovation or originality,
however they do what they do to great effect and prove that their own
persistence was well worth the effort.

thrash-death mixture from Holland full of intelligent riffs, speed changes and strong
songwriting. The CD delivers an intense, and sometimes brutal collection of
thought provoking songs. The band stated that they set out to create each song
as a recognizable entity of its own. This goal was achieved on "In Blood
and Heart". It's refreshing to hear a band that strives to ensure that
each song does not sound like a continuation of the previous one.
A
heavier than normal melodic death metal release, this CD proves that simply
being influenced by greatness is not enough, you have to build upon it. The
various elements that make up this release are numerous and wide spread,
however, that mixture of styles is in itself the magic of this CD. All of the
ingredients of metal that you love are all brought together in a symphony of
blissful chaos.

kellottava, paikoin reippammalla tempolla ryyditettynä ja yhdentekeviä biisejä
tarjoileva paketti on kuin väsyneiden kliseiden tiivistelmä 90-luvun alusta -
ja vieläpä kehnoilla soundeilla ulos suollettuna.
Mikä vain keskivertoinen tusinabändi DM:n saralta ja siihen hitunen
aikalaismelodioita Ruotsinmaalta, ja lopputulos voisi kuulostaa In Blood and
Heartilta. Ei sillä, että Persistense olisi erityisesti huonoa tai ärsyttävää
kamaa, mutta siitä on vaikea löytää mitään hyvää, uutta tai tarttuvaa. Sen
sijaan keskivertoisuutta - erityisesti heikoilla kitara- ja rumpusoundeilla
varustettuna - ei vain jaksa kuunnella kolmea varttia putkeen. Ei etenkään
ensimmäisen kuuntelukerran jälkeen.
Kun homma on vielä viimeistelty käheällä, loppupeleissä myös kohtuullisen
munattomalla perusörinällä, jää jäljelle vain kysymys: miksi kukaan halusi

"Verstörend innovativ"
Achtung, liebe Death Thrasher – hier kommt eine echte Herausforderung für eure
Lauscher. Vorhang auf für PERSISTENSE aus unserem Nachbarland Holland.
Was hier abgeht, ist Folgendes: Man stelle sich vor, DEATH hätten ein paar
Überbleibsel ihrer „Sound Of Perseverance“-Session fertig gemacht und ein 1988
aufgenommenes Van Drunen-Demo darüber gelegt.
Das führt dazu, dass „In Blood And Heart“ erstmal richtig schockt und
vollkommen heterogen wirkt. Musik und Vocals scheinen einfach nicht
zusammenpassen zu wollen. Irgendwann aber merkt man, dass das eigene
Hörverhalten von den vielen gleich klingenden Death Metal-Shoutern der
vergangenen Dekade völlig abgestumpft worden ist. Sänger Stefan verfügt nämlich
über ein wirklich ausdrucksstarkes Organ, das sich hinter Könnern wie genanntem
van Drunen, Mark Greve oder John Tardy nicht zu verstecken braucht. In
Kombination mit dem sehr differenzierten, technisch anspruchsvollen und über
weite Strecken ausgeklügelt melodischen Sound des Albums entsteht hier etwas
weitgehend Neues, das durchaus zunächst fremd wirkt. Hört euch das verstörende
„Further“ oder den epischen Titeltrack an und Ihr wisst, was ich meine. Mit ein
wenig Muße erschließt sich aber ein wirklich lohnendes Hörerlebnis, das für den
Fan genannter Bands sicherlich bereichernd wirkt und beweist, dass Innovation
auch auf den seltsamsten Wegen im Todesblei-Sektor immer noch möglich ist.
Lasst euch von dem beknackten Cover nicht abschrecken und hört in das Album
rein – es lohnt sich.

Having
originally formed in Hertogenbosch during 2000 with a line-up of which only
singer Stefan van Vugt remains, Dutch act Persistence (the name
derived from an amalgamation of the words “persist” and “intense”, words which
certainly typify the band’s music) developed a style of Thrash Metal
full of groove, which they would dub “SwingThrash”. After releasing their
self-titled 6-track demo EP in 2004 (which got positive reaction from the
press) gigging posibilities increased, so things were looking on the up. But
smouldering internal problems within the band would lead to line-up changes,
and the eventual demise of the band in 2005!
Well,
the singer wasn’t gonna lay down and play pretty dead, and gradually started
looking for people with a likewize spirited musical mind. It took him two
years, and many were the line-up changes, but eventually he would find the
ideal line-up with guitarists Ralf van der Horst & Jacques Maas,
bassist Mark de Haas, and drummer Bram Trommelen. Through the
line-up changes also came a subtle change of musical direction towards “…a more
powerful, dynamic and diverse kind of Metal. Influences come from different
styles of Metal and one of the main goals is to see a song as a song; a decent
structure, meaningful lyrics and most of all, a song has to be recornizable…”
(from the biography at myspace.com/persistencemetal). With all of the
aforementioned in mind, the band recorded 3 songs for their 2008 promo EP, and
this got the band positive reviews in several magazines (the most important for
the band being that in Dutch leading Metal rag Aardschok, who
dubbed the band as “…promising dynamic Groove Metal with a brutal voice…”),
which resulted in a bout of gigs (apparently not so easy to attain for a Dutch
thrash Metal act, as Stefan has ‘only’ managed to get his band some 60
shows until now) including a support slot with Testament in March…and a
deal with Deity Down.
The
thoughts that went through my mind when first listening to the 9 tracks on this
album were, “Nice melodic intro!” and indeed the soundtrackish instrumental
shortie (sounds like a Metal act combined with a Philharmonic Orchestra with
loŕds of horns…hey, and the guys definitely have a thing about soundtracks,
samples of one -or more- used in the opening of “Infinite Madness”) is
very delectable. Next came first song “Futher”, and that immediately
gave an indication of the Death Thrash style the band is playing today. Stefan’s
voice is actually rougher than the music, which draws influences at
least from melodic Gothenburg Metal. On their MySpace page (which
I only got to consult ŕfter having given the album its couple of spins in the
cd-player) influences cited include Lamb Of God, Arch Enemy, Death,
and Slayer, so I was pleased to see my original thoughts about the band
somewhat vindicated! A nice surprise is the great production (the album was
recorded, mixed and mastered by Hans Pieters at Rotterdam’s Excess
Studios) which was given to the album overall, allowing Stefan’s
lyrics to be recognizable in spite of his vocal stylings. Well, although
reading about a band’s music may give the reader an understanding of the
musicians’ underlaying intentions, I suppose the best way to get to know a
band’s music, is still to listen to it…so why don’t you surf on out to the
band’s MySpace, where the guys left 2 tracks off the 2008 promo
(new versions on the album) alongside 3 tracks off the album for you to sample
and savour (by the way, you can look at a live video of one of the tracks
further down the page).
End
conclusion? Well…Persistence has definitely succeeded in bringing a very
nice album, and one is inclined to assess that the breaks and tempo changes are
indeed in service of the songs’ structures. I’m also inclined to say that in
order for the songs to be memorable, I would have to spend a couple of days
with the music on an island, with nothing else than In Blood And Heart to
listen to…which might seem like a negative thing to say, but is mentioned in
the first place to indicate that Persistence’s music is not, in spite of
the fact that one is instantly headbanging along with the tunes, a quick snack
to devour. Nay, it is a dish which has to be savoured, eaten with little bits
at a time, so as to allow the eager listener the possibility to have each
element in the music tickle his/her musical tastebuds! Yeah…definitely an album
which has to be allowed to grow on the listener in order for him/her to be able
to analyze its contents. And some intelligent lyrics to boot!

Was
haben die Niederlande neben Antje und ihrem Käse noch zu bieten? Richtig:
diabolisch bösen Metal! PESTILENCE und LEGION OF THE DAMNED seien da zum Beispiel
genannt, obwohl die Liste wahrscheinlich bis ins Unermessliche weitergeführt
werden könnte. Spätestens mit „In Blood And Heart“ dürfen sich dort auch
PERSISTENSE (um jegliche Irrtümer auszuräumen: dieses Wortspiel setzt sich aus
„to persist“ und „intense“ zusammen und ist damit vollkommen korrekt
geschrieben) einreihen. 2000 startete man mit der ersten EP und löste sich fünf
Jahre darauf nach einem schwierigem Lineup-Karussell wieder auf. Sänger Stefan
van Vugt suchte sich prompt andere Mitstreiter, um das Projekt neu aufzurollen.
Nach der 2008er Promo kommt nach neun Jahren die erste Langspielplatte des
holländischen Todesbolzen auf den Markt.
Die progressiven Stücke liegen teils deutlich über der vier Minuten-Marke.
Somit kommt man mit nur neun Stücken auf knappe 45 Minuten. Alle Achtung.
Anfangs spielte man noch sogenannten „Swingthrash“, wovon man sich jetzt aber
mehr oder weniger komplett entfernt hat. Beschreiben würde ich den Stil als
sehr deathlastigen Thrash mit einer nicht zu verkennenden Bay Area-Würze. Durch
die enorme Länge hat man genug Raum, um die deutlich überwiegenden
Uptempo-Kracher mit ausgiebigen Soli und gemächlichen Downtempo-Phasen zu
schmücken. Mit der gewissen Portion Groove garniert klingen die Stücke auch
noch schön angenehm und hörbar. Wer also auf das zermürbende Geblaste der
LEGIONer steht und derbe Vocals der Marke PESTILENCE bevorzugt, ist hier wohl
genau richtig. Das recht monotone Gewürge von Herrn van Vugt stört mich dabei
ein wenig, andere werden’s aber höchstwahrscheinlich klasse finden. Zumindest
kann man sich, wie ich finde, durch die präzise Arbeit an den Instrumenten und
das ausgefeilte Songwriting im überregionalen Geschehen festsetzen. Besonders
lobenswert klingt der Titeltrack: dunkler, bestialisch treibender Thrash
schwingt in einen stampfenden Knüppelpart um und wächst zu einem ansprechendem
Gemisch aus klassischem Solo und drückendem Death. Ganz Großes Kino für die
Fans!
Technisch einwandfrei, eine solide Produktion und sehr ambitionierte Musiker,
bei denen von den Langäxten bis zu den Drums alles sitzt (vielleicht liegt das
auch zum Teil daran, das Drummer Bram wahrhaftig Trommelen (!) mit Nachnamen
heißt). Neu ist das keinesfalls, aber die Niederländer verstehen ihr Handwerk
und sollten mal von Oldschool-Thrash- und Death-Fans angetestet werden!

"intense", inkluderer imidlertid ogsĺ mange groovy thrash strukturer
inn i komposisjonene pĺ deres fřrste fullengder titulert 'In Blood and Heart'.
Stefan van Vugt pĺ vokal minner sterkt om Martin Van
Drunen ( Hail of Bullets , ex- Pestilence ).
Stemmen er lav og guttural, men dessverre ogsĺ sćrdeles statisk. Stefan
kjřrer samme stil gjennom hele skiva, noen liker slik forutsigbar og
monoton stemmebruk, men undertegnende mener at en mer leken stil hadde passet
sammen bedre med de dynamiske lĺtene til Persistense .
Denne hollandske dřdsskvadronen satser nemlig sterkt pĺ dynamikk og groove. The
Reality scorer for eksempel hřyt pĺ melodiřse overganger hvor
inspirasjonen fra band som At the Gates og Edge of
Sanity er ganske ĺpenbar. Videre finnes det snedige, tunge og thrasha
riff over hele platen. En Lamb of God sammenligning er det nok
mange som kommer til ĺ trekke frem, men ogsĺ The Gathering ćra
Testament fřler jeg er pĺ sin plass ĺ nevne. Pĺ lĺta Doomsday
prřver de seg med en episk akustisk introsak som minner bĺde om Welcome
Home (Sanitarium) av Metallica og Abysmal av
The Haunted . Det lĺter bĺde kult og sprřtt!
En fellesnevner for hele platen er en glimrende fast struktur og smart snekring
av lĺter. Bandet har holdt det gĺende siden 2000 og startet med en avart som de
noe komisk kalte for swingthrash . Denne stilen har de forlatt, men
alle disse ĺrene sammen som en enhet har utvilsomt bidratt til et ganske sĺ
profesjonelt uttrykk over In Blood and Heart .
In Blood and Heart er ei solid skive som gir et godt
fřrsteinntrykk, men det finnes ingen innovative elementer. Man har hřrt alt
fřr, men sangene sparker godt fra seg; spesielt bandets evne til ĺ mikse flere
inspiratoriske elementer pĺ en gang er stas. For enkelte vil undertegnende
tippe at bandet ogsĺ vil score en del pĺ dagligdagse tekster istedenfor blod og
gřrr. Endelig er det ingen metalcore tendenser ĺ spore pĺ denne skiva, noe som
sikkert er et veldig hyggelig faktum for mange. Her er det tidlig 90talls
thrash/death som setter alle premisser.

scheint eine extrem lebendige Metalszene zu haben, denn neben NUESTROS DERECHOS
sind PERSISTENSE eine weitere Band von dort, die internationales Format
besitzt. Gegründet wurde das Quintett bereits 2000, aber 2005 fiel die damalige
Besetzung auseinander. Sänger Stefan Van Vugt, der den Stil der Band mit seinen
Old School Growls extrem prägt, wollte die Combo aber unbedingt am Leben
erhalten und suchte sich nach dem Split Leute mit einer ausgeprägten Passion
für Metal und so veröffentlichte man 2005 ein Three Track Promo. Das späte
Debüt ist nun der unbedingte Beweis dafür, dass PERSISTENSE all das Engagement
von Van Vugt wert sind. Die Songs verbinden DEATHs Frühwerk "Scream Bloody
Gore" mit "Erase" von GOREFEST und zeigen, dass Deathmetal noch
lange nicht abgemeldet ist. Die Comebacks von TESTAMENT, PESTILENCE und SLAYER
könnten auch kleineren Bands wie PERSISTENSE den Weg ebnen. Der Anspruch der
Niederländer besteht aber keineswegs nur darin technisch versiert und
songwriterisch begabt zu sein, nein, die Songs sollen Wiedererkennungswert
haben und bedeutungsvolle Inhalte. Ein ambitioniertes Projekt, welches die Fünf
aber mit Bravour umsetzen. Die acht Songs lassen alles, was in letzter Zeit auf
dem Metalsektor ablief, die letzte PESTILENCE mal ausgenommen, ziemlich blass
aussehen, allein dadurch, dass PERSISTENSE, übrigens ein Wortspiel aus
"persistence" und "intense", so stark durch die Klassiker

Persistense’s
vorig jaar opgenomen promo had ik al eens geruild met een van de bandleden op het
To Hell Fest in Groesbeek. Volgens mij was het hier ook dat ik de band voor het
eerst live zag spelen. Beukende death/thrash! Lekker! Eind september dus meteen
‘In Blood And Heart’ gekocht. Een erg goeie plaat vol lekker catchy
death/thrash metal. Beukende ritmes, lekkere drumpartijen en dito grunts ŕ la
Johnny H. (Unleashed), die goed passen bij de toch best melodische muziek in
het straatje van Death, Pestilence en Entombed. Om je oren bij af te likken!

Anfänglich hätte ich ja bald noch
vermutet ,das die Niederländer eher was in Sachen Gothic Metal hier verzapfen
werden .Obwohl die Einleitung voll danach den Anschein hat ,haben die sich nun
ner ganz anderen ,und zum Glück ,fetteren Schien verschrieben .Denn bereits das
zweite Stück offenbart einem Mucke ,die ganz tief in die Death/Thrash Richtung
eintaucht .Allerdings werden hierbei die Death Metal Anteile eher minimaler
gehalten ,und tauchen nur vereinzelt in Form einiger Riffs auf .Gut den Gesang
- recht tief im leicht growligem Charakter gehalten – ist schon irgendwie ne
recht typische Death Metal Angelegenheit .Am ehesten erinnert der mich vom
Ausdruck her noch an „Morgoth“ und
passt wirklich gut in das gesamte Geschehen ein .Durchweg kann man so einiges
an Rhythmuswechseln verzeichnen ,wobei aber dennoch deren Hauptausrichtung auf
der flotten Schiene läuft .Auch dann ,wenn man mal eher recht dickflüssig
schleppend daherkommt ,steht immer
der enorme Einsatz der Gitarren im Vordergrund .Bei einigen wenigen Stücken
präsentiert man sich dann sogar mal kurzzeitig leicht virtuos beim Riffing ,um
dann aber bereits im nächsten
Moment wieder voll fett in die Saiten zu greifen .
Brutalität im etwas gemäßigterem
Format wird hier trotz allem doch recht groß geschrieben .Zum headbangen ist
der Stoff schon recht gut geeignet auch wenn es zwischenzeitlich doch immer mal
zu ner leichten „Ruhephase“ kommt . Für mich kommt das alles allerdings doch zu
sehr verspielt rüber ,wobei gerade die geradlinige Durchschlagskraft der
einzelnen Stücke doch etwas zu kurz kommt . Persistense haben sicherlich den
Death/Thrash Metal absolut nicht neu erfunden. Trotzdem könnt ihr hier getrost
mal reinschnuppern !

Opening
with a cinematic intro that start off with a piano and builds into a climax
that wouldn't feel out of place on a Symphony X record "In Blood and
Heart" is however a ballsy death/thrash record that integrates a couple of
groove metal elements. Frontman Stefan van Vugt has a mean shouted grunt that
sounds similar to Prejudice vocalist Erik Lemmens. The guitar work doesn't
limited itself to death/thrash exclusively as it regularly wanders into Swedish
melodic death – and traditional metal territory. The biggest problem for
"In Blood and Heart" is the lack of a signature track. Each and every
track of this record is good on its own merits, but as a whole this record
misses a stand out track that truly would put Persistense on the map. Despite
that all elements are present from catchy breaks, pulverizing riffs to
recognizable melodies and furious vocals; the spark to elevate this band to a
higher level is sadly still absent. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Excess
Studio by Hans Pieters in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The artwork by Ronald Visser
complements the package nicely. Persistense is definitely a band with a bright
future ahead of itself, yet they aren't quite completely there yet. Promising
debut.

Die
niederländische Death-Attacke PERSISTENSE veröffentlichen ein in vielerlei
Hinsicht schwer zugängliches Album.
Seit
2000 turnen die Niederländer mit einigen Line-Up-Wechseln durch das Geschehen,
ohne großartig aufgefallen zu sein. Ob sich das mit ihrem Debut "In Blood
And Heart" ändern wird, soll im Folgenden untersucht werden. Nach dem
wirklich vielversprechenden, von klassischen Instrumenten untermalten Intro,
geht die Verwirrfahrt los. Hier treffen geniale Mosh-Parts auf intelligente
Strukturen einer druckvoll produzierten Platte vs. pubertäre,
gesellschaftskritische Lyrics auf nicht ganz ausgereifte Songs. Und dann die
Stimme von Shouter Stefan. Heiser krächzt er sich durch alle acht Tracks, als
ob ihm der Gesangsstil überhaupt nicht liegen würde. Hinzu kommt, dass der
Gesang gerne einige Quäntchen stärker abgemischt hätte werden können. So geht
er im fetten Sound etwas unter. Das ist die eine Seite. Andererseits zündet der
Gesamtmix erst beim zweiten oder dritten Durchhören. Dann könnte man die Vox
auch als "individuell" oder gar "innovativ" bezeichnen.
Insgesamt
werden gute musikalische Ansätze geboten, ein Aufspringen vor Freude ist aber
auch nicht angesagt. Tendenziell ordentliche Songs sind 'Further', der mit
einem leckeren Strophenriff daher kommt, 'Overcome' und 'Doomsday', die mit
einem klasse Refrain aufwarten und sich gleich in den Gehörgängen festsetzen.
Der Titeltrack ist mit über sieben Minuten der längste Song und schallt mit
progressiven Allüren aus den Boxen. Aber: Texte wie "Fuck this world, it
makes us hate" in 'Infinite Madness' oder "inside I'm crying" in
'Sick World', brauche ich wirklich nicht.
PERSISTENSE (übrigens eine Zusammensetzung der Wörter "persist" und
"intense") haben mit "In Blood And Heart" ein sehr
ambivalentes, modernes Death-Metal-Album aufgenommen, das einerseits zu
gefallen weiß, gleichzeitig aber auch einige Schwachpunkte aufweist. Hört euch
auf keinen Fall die Songs in 30 Sekundenausschnitten an, sondern möglichst im
Ganzen und lasst sie auf euch wirken. Ein Letztes: Falls ihr euch für einen
Kauf entscheidet, überklebt das beknackte Lava-Cover.

In a
worldwide underground metal scene plagued with tons and tons of clones and
trendy bands trying to gain a name doing what has been already done by other
bands, it very refreshing and even motivating, when you listen a band doing
basically what they want, what they like.
This is
the case with Dutch metallers named Persistense and their recent work
entitled “In Blood and Heart” Full length album & brought to life
thanks to the sick label Deity Down Records.
Let’s
get to work dudes…Persistense is a Death/Thrash outfit that has found its own
style in the genre by combining the heaviness of mid tempo structures, with
melodic guitars arrangements and some catchy/groovy sections of pure
thrash metal. The end result is a very well balanced record where every song is
different from each other.
Don’t
know…but I feel several reminiscences of the all time classic Demolition
Hammer, remember, that killer US band of the early 90s?, well, Persistence is
not a copy but has some elements in common, those bloody groovy parts that
makes you want to get out and kick some asses …ha ha…simply killer!!!
Something
I found very interesting was the vocal approach, good arrangements are
introduced where chorus have two different voices sounding at the same time. I
would say that this dude sounds like the killer death metal voice of the early
90s, probably very much in the Swedish vein, you know, Dismember, Therion or
Desultory.
Finally…lets talk about the sound production…FLAWLESS…this is the type of release where from the very first time you have a clear perspective on what’s going on, you know sometimes there are killer records but realize of that after several listening, well, “In Blood and Heart” is not of that type. The sound is exquisite, everything with the correct volumes and effect so…what else can I say except that this is a killer release that is worth to become part of your musical collection, this is the type of record you are going to listen over and over for several weeks. Garanteed!!!

Im Jahr 2005 sind Persistense (ein Wortspiel aus ´to
persist´ und ´intense´) wegen ständiger Line-Up Probleme auseinander gefallen.
Vier Jahre später versucht die neu formierte Truppe um das nunmehr einzige
Gründungsmitglied Sänger Stefan van Vugt noch einmal neu durchzustarten und
stellt dazu ihr Debüt-Album „In Blood And Heart“ zur Diskussion.
Haben die Holländer ihren Stil früher als Swingthrash
bezeichnet, müssten sie heute das „Swing“ streichen und gegen die Vorsilbe
„Death-“ tauschen. Denn die Acht Stücke sind deutlich von klassischem
Todesmetall a´la Obituary oder Grave beeinflusst, was auf instrumentaler Ebene
auch gut funktioniert. Das große Manko ist jedoch die Stimme von Shouter Stefan
van Vugt. Diese klingt zwar böse - aber auch sehr eindimensional - was einige
Stücke ihrer Dynamik beraubt. Die Songs verhalten sich dabei dann wie die Lava
auf dem (sehr schicken Coverartwork): heiß und gefährlich aber auch recht zäh
und stockend in der Vorwärtsbewegung.
Wenn es den Niederländern in Zukunft gelingt, die
Stücke etwas flüssiger und mitreißender (wie in „Infinite Madness“) zu
gestalten, werden sicher noch mehr Hörer auf die Band aufmerksam.

Die 2005 von Sänger Stefan van Vugt wiederbelebten
Persistense sind das neueste Signing im Stall des niederländischen Deity Down
Labels. DDR hat sich mit seinen Releases auf den Death Metal-Bereich
spezialisiert und ist damit bisher ganz gut gefahren. Gute einheimische Bands
wie Devious oder auch Vermin konnten damit einem größeren Publikum zugeführt
werden. Leider können Persistense diesen Qualitätslevel ganz und gar nicht
halten. Weitestgehend muss man auch Persistense wohl im Bereich des Death
Metals einordnen, wenngleich auch einige andere Zutaten – wie etwa Thrash –
Eingang in den Sound des Quintetts finden. Das Positivste an der noch im Jahre
2008 im legendären Dynamo Club zu Eindhoven für Testament eröffnenden Combo
ist, zumindest in meinen Ohren, die messerscharfe Gitarrenarbeit der beiden
Axemen Ralf van der Horst und Jacques Maas. Ansonsten muss ich leider gestehen,
dass der Funke bei keinem der acht Songs plus Intro auf mich übergesprungen
ist. Die Songs sind komplett ohne Highlights, die Arrangements langweilig und
der tiefergelegte Gesang von Herrn van Vugt einfach nur langweilig.
Bekanntermaßen bin ich kein Fan von extremem Death Metal-Gegrunze, aber im
Vergleich hat selbst das Geröchel des Cannibal Corpse-Frontmanns mehr

auschließlich Klischee durchsetzt. PERSISTENSE sind hörbar vom Old School-Thrash
beeinflusst und entwickeln ihre Stücke geradlinig und straff. Doch weshalb
müssen auf „In Blood And Heart“ alle Songs gleich klingen? Warum bemühen die
Niederländer immer wieder dieselben Riffs? Hat dem Frontmann denn noch niemand
gesagt, dass seine monotonen Einsätze die Hörer alsbald ermüden? Schlechte
Laune ist vorprogrammiert, wenn man sich ernsthaft daran macht, die
Debüt-Scheibe des Quintetts zu hören. Mängel und Unzulänglichkeiten gibt es
allerorten, jedoch nichts, was als gelungen hervor zu heben ist. PERSISTENSE
erreichen nicht einmal Durchschnitt.

PERSISTENSE
sehen sich als Pendel zwischen to persist und intense. Wenn dann auch noch der
Titel "In Blood And Heart" mit in die Eindringlichkeit gezogen wird,
scheint in den Niederlanden etwas Aufregendes zu erblühen. Die Knospe besteht
zwar seit 2000, damals angabegemäß noch im "Swingthrash"
aktiv, zur Entfaltung kommt sie aber erst jetzt. Sie musste gedüngt werden
durch eine ungewöhnliche Vorgehensweise im Thrash/Death. Die Holländer liegen
vermehrt im flotten Bereich und gehen auch mal in die Prügelei, Wechseln in den
Groove und lassen die Gitarren mit Soli sprechen. Wem das nicht zu scharf ist,
dem sei gesagt, dass sich auch noch progressive Klänge und ein gesundes, Bay
Area taugliches Melodiebewusstsein ausfindig machen lassen. Begleitet wird
"In Blood And Heart" dabei durch einen Brüllwürfel, der zunächst wie
ein Elefant im Porzellanladen wirkt. Völlig stumpf röchelt er sich durch den
Laden und schein im Studio über Kopfhörer etwas anderes als PERSISTENSE gehört
zu haben. Aber nach und nach wird Sympathie mit diesem Fremdling empfunden und
letztlich ist zu konstatieren, dass gerade dieser Kontrast (aggressiver, immer
filigraner Thrash trifft Rumpelgrunzer) zu deutlich mehr Hörgenuss führt (aber
Vorsicht, diese Pole können auch zur Ablehnung der Band führen). Somit ist
"In Blood And Heart" ein überdurchschnittliches Thrash Release, das
über Wiedererkennung und besonderem Charme verfügt.

Dem
angethrashten Death Metal (oder vielleicht auch dem tödlichen Thrash?!), haben
sich PERSISTENSE aus dem schönen Holland verschrieben.
Nachdem
die Lichter im Jahre 2005 eigentlich schon endgültig aus waren, beehren uns die
Herren nun mit ihrem offiziellen Full-Length-Debüt namens "In Blood And
Heart", welches wir alleine den Lazarus’schen Anwandlungen des Vokalisten
Stefan van Vugt zu verdanken haben.
Und um
es kurz zu machen: Genau dieser junge Mann, der die Fregatte durch seinen
alleinigen Einsatz wieder auf Kurs gebracht hat, ist es auch, der mir den
Hörspaß an "In Blood And Heart" ein wenig verdirbt. Sein kehlig
krächzender, röchelnder Gesang ist nämlich überhaupt nicht mein Fall.
Vielleicht gibt es Leute, die es geil finden - ich nicht. Mir fehlt da definitiv
der Druck in der Stimme: halb Hardcore, halb asthmatischer Zombie - danke,
weiter.
Aber den
schwarzen Peter alleine dem Sänger zuzuschieben wäre auch nicht ganz fair. Ich
weiß nicht, ob mir PERSISTENSE mehr zusagen würden, wenn sie einen anderen
Sänger hätten. Musikalisch ist die Scheibe zwar grundsolide, mehr aber auch
nicht.
Neben
melodischen, gerne auch mal zweistimmigen Thrasheinschüben mörtelt sich die
Instrumentalfraktion kompetent durch so einige Spielarten des Death Metals.
Dabei kommt der Groove nicht zu kurz, die Double Bass darf ganz bestimmt nicht
fehlen und wenn der Schlagzeuger die Blastkeule schwingt, werden Gedanken an
DEW-SCENTED wach.
Trotzdem
fehlt der ganzen Geschichte der letzte Kick, da man alles irgendwie schon
einmal gehört zu haben scheint. Einzelne Lieder hervorzuheben lohnt sich aus
genau diesem Grund auch nicht. Hier und da blitzen mal eine nette Melodie, oder
ein ganz guter Refrain hervor, die retten gerade noch so die Wertung, machen
den Kohl ansonsten aber auch nicht fett.
Mit ihrem
Debüt verschenken PERSISTENSE leider eine gute Chance, da vom Technischen her
auf "In Blood And Heart" zwar alles einwandfrei ist, man
songwriterisch aber noch eine Schippe drauflegen sollte, um diesen Standart
auch zu erreichen.

Im Plattland am Ärmelkanal hat
vor neun bis zehn Jahren sich eine Truppe zusammengerauft, die dieselben
Querelen eines Banddaseins wie viele andere durchlaufen hat. Deshalb dauert es
auch mit der Auswechselbank, zwei kurzen Selbstproduzierten und ähnlichem
einige Zeit, bis heute eine volle Scheibe geboren wird. Ihr früherer Stil wird
mit „Swingthrash" angegeben, und obwohl mir dieses Genre nicht so richtig
geläufig ist, kann ich doch kleine Merkmale auf dieser Platte ausmachen, die
mit so etwas zu tun haben könnten.
Schon das Eingangsstückchen hat
etwas tänzerisches, was dann aber in „Further" recht bald im harten
Riffing erstickt wird. Sinnfreies Gebolze klingt anders, denn PERSISTENSE bauen
immer wieder kleine rhythmische Stolpersteine ein, die für etwas Unterhaltung
sorgen sollen, ohne den Groove der Chose herauszunehmen. Auch wenn technisch
einwandfrei gezockt wird, muss ich sagen, dass trotzdem mancher Abschnitt im
Hackbrett so simpel klingt, als ob es nichts Spannendes zu sagen gäbe. Doch
löst sich dieses Problem durch einen nicht übertriebenen Abwechslungsreichtum
in den Songs.
Des Öfteren ergeben sich auch kleine Kabinettsstückchen der Axtarbeiter, die zu
zweit oder allein nette Harmonien auspacken. Originelle Kleinigkeiten wie die
Eröffnung von „Infinite Madness", die der Drummer alleine von sich gibt,
ergeben zwischendurch immer wieder einen kleinen Überraschungshappen.
Jetzt muss ich aber noch ein paar Worte zu den Vocals verlieren, denn dies ist
ein streitbares Element. Als ob der Hund von Baskerville Husten hat, kombiniert
mit unmenschlichen Lauten der Wesen in George Romeros Filmen, so heiser
grunzend hört sich der Mann am Mikro ungefähr an. Was grundsätzlich kein Manko
darstellen muss, wird hier aber durch andauernde Monotonie zu einem solchen.
Bei solcher Musik muss ja kein klarer Gesang vorkommen, aber etwas Abwechslung
bei sowieso schon gewöhnungsbedürftigen Kehllauten kann nicht schaden.
Der erdige Sound von PERSISTENSE
bringt sympathische Ruppigkeit mit sich und zwischen Blasts, Breaks und
Klingklang findet jeder seine Nische, der mit melodischer Härte etwas anfangen
kann. Einzig der Gesang zieht das Ganze etwas herunter. Doch das charmante
Gelärme, das eine Prise Elchtod nicht abstreiten kann, kann ganz gut die
Membran zum Erzittern bringen.

This
dutch band has been making music for almost ten years but due to various
line-up changes they only released a demo in 2001, that’s it. It even came to
the point when nobody remained besides vocalist ‘Stefan’. At last he found
people to continue the band and from that point things got rolling again.
Playing many gigs (one as opener for Testament) and finally getting signed by
Deity down records. And that’s about time if you ask me.
But why you ask? Well, it’s not because they are brutal or technical or
original? But what is it then? They just write very good songs with strong
riffs, nice grooves and with a lot of variation. Songs as Overcome, Progress and Sick world stand out because of the
great riffs and exciting breaks.
But I also have a few complaints. Not every song is that interesting especially
the first couple songs don’t really grip my attention. Second, the vocals are a
little too monotonous which is too bad because the music lends itself for a
more ‘’experimental’’ (read variation) approach. And three the production,
which sounds ok in all fairness but it is also a little standard.
All in all, a very promising debut from a promising band.

When you
are allowed to open for the legendary American thrash band Testament, you must
be doing something right. This was also the case with the Dutch metallers of
Persistence and that was no coincidence. Hailing from Den Bosch, they've
started the band nearly a decade ago. That the road has been far from easy was
shown in 2005 when the band disbanded because of the classic line-up problems.
Luckily vocalist Stefan van Vugt was able to surround himself with motivated
musicians, so that Persistence could be reborn. After this, things began to
work for the band. The hard labor resulted in the 2008 promo which got some
nice reviews. In 2009, there was the pre mentioned Testament show and now also
the release of their debut album 'In Blood and Heart.'
This
first Persistense full length has to grow on you. I've listed to the album for
about twenty times now, so I'm not jumping into conclusion. The style is quite
original so it took me some time to form an opinion about the album in general.
'In Blood and Heart' offers a variated mix of thrash/death compositions with
special attention for the heavy riffs and vocals. At first, the vocals were a
bit annoying, but later on I've had to take that back since they suit the music
very well. Basically I can be very short about this: the song material is very
well written and I believe there are a lot of original plots and turns that
makes this album worth your while. Especially the second half of the album with
tracks like 'Overcome,' 'Progress' and the epic title track 'In blood and
heart.' In this last song, you can really hear the potential of this band. A
nice first album with great potential. If they continue to grow like this, the
next album just might be a big surprise. If you are into Thrash and of Death
metal, be sure to check them out! Live, as well as their record.

A holland death/thrash horda első nagy lemeze nem is váratott magára olyan sokáig, ahhoz képest, hogy a lemez megjelenése előtt egy évvel csak egy promó lemezt adtak ki (2004-ben Ep-t mely a Persistense névre hallgatott). Viszonylag elég hamar eljutottak odáig, hogy lemezszerződést írjanak alá. Igaz, hogy divatba jött, hogy mindenki ráállt a régi sulis vonalra, hiszen ez az irányzat ismételten fénykorát kezdi élni, de sok a sablon. Mint pl. a black metal esetében. Persze vannak kivételek, de nézzük csak, hogy hogyan juthatott el idáig a Persistense, mit tudott letenni az asztalra. Ami nagyon sokat számít, azok a hatások. Gondolok én itt a Morbid Angel, Obituary, Bolt Thrower hármas hatására, és természetesen a Slayer is kellően méltó helyen trónol. A szitu a szokásos. Hol lassú, cammogós pusztítás, hol blast beat sorozás, és sok helyen a thrash darálással találkozhat a nagyérdemű.
Intro +
nyolc dal áll a repertoárban, és mindegyikben egyetlen egy a közös. Kibaszott
nagy súlyuk van. Eszméletlen dallamok és megoldások vannak például az album
címadó dalában az „In Blood and Heart”-ban, vegyítve a fenti stílusok
tömkelegét. Akad rendesen groove-os megoldás is dögivel, de természetesen nem
túlzottan. Akadnak akusztikus részek is melyeken szólók buja virágjainak
illatát szippanthatjuk be, amik az igazi 80-as évekre hajaznak (Iron Maiden),
és a 90-es évek eleje, s közepe tájékára datálható nagy sikerű bandák melodikus
rothadására is kellően kísértő megoldások is helyet kapnak (At The Gates). Nem
kell itt gondolnunk semmilyen „slágergyanús” nyavalyára, attól sokkal jobb a
lemez. Sőt, ilyen jó kezdést, nehezen tud produkálni, most a mai előadók
többsége a piacon.
Meglepő,
hogy a dalok nagyon megfontoltan fogantak meg, és nagyon precízen,
kidolgozottan kerültek ki a stúdióból is. Stefan van Vugt hangja kísértetiesen
hasonlít Kelly Shaefer (Atheist) és John Tardy (Obituary) együttesére, ami egy
szintű egzotikumnak is elkönyvelhető. Szintén az is elkönyvelhető, hogy a lemez
nagyon jóra sikeredett, de nem hibátlan. Az ember elveszti az időérzékét amikor
egy nagyon jó muzsikát hallgat, aminek következtében vagy nagyon hamar, vagy
nagyon lassan múlik az idő. Esetemben az utóbbi valósult meg, ami bizonyos
szempontokat előtérbe helyezve, nem is baj, de sajnos alkalomadtán egy kicsit
lesüllyed a lemez. Nem lesz unalmas, csak egy minimálisan vontatott, és sokáig
kell várni a jó témára. Nem türelmetlenség, hanem inkább csigázás. Az ember
mindig várja, hogy mikor jön az a nagy világmegváltó szóló, vagy téma esetleg
szövegrész, de egy kicsit csúsztatják a srácok, ami lehet, hogy nem nagy baj,
de ez ne menjen az egész lemez rovására. Ettől függetlenül egy új kedvencre
leltem a Persistens első nagylemezének köszönhetően, és a bandára is figyelni
fogok. Kellemes perceket töltöttem vele, de ettől még ráférne a muzsikára egy
kis polírozás.

It’s no secret that I’m not that into thrash
metal, I mean I’ve stated it in pretty much every review I’ve ever written of a
thrash influenced record. So here we go again; I’m not a big fan of the genre.
Generally speaking I’d say most of it suck, in my book. It’s sloppy, too
melodic and the vocals are almost exclusively annoying. But over the years a
couple of bands have proven me wrong, and opened up my eyes to the fact that
thrash metal shouldn’t just be spelled trash metal (it’s a cheap pun, I know,
but I had to do it). However, when I receive an album by an unknown band, who
themselves have dubbed their music swingthrash, I’m not exactly overwhelmed
with eagerness and high hopes.
In blood and heart is Persistense’s debut fullength, and it contains a
buttload of elements to distinguish itself from the crowd. This is far from
pure thrash metal, and as far as swing goes I’m not sure, but there’s a ton of
groove. One of the first things that popped into my mind was the big death
metal element, making this more of a death/thrash album. But a continuous
listen will reveal some hardcore vibes as well. There are so many bands going
through my mind it’s almost ridiculous. At times I’m thinking Sepultura, Pantera and Hatebreed, and both Arch Enemy and Slayer shine through their sound. But the fact
remains that Persistense have a much more brutal sound than any of these acts, and
dissecting it enough would probably just makes the influential list too long
for anyone to bear reading it.
The vocals are mid-range growls, lying
somewhere in between classic Swedish old school death metal and hardcore
shouting. I’ve read some complaints about the vocal department, that’s it’s too
static and rigid, but I definitely like it. If they went for more classic
thrash screaming instead the music would lose tons of brutality. The riffing is
definitely a key part of the music (as it should for all acts, but it gets lost
in the hazy blur of blastbeats and technicality). As I said earlier it’s
groovy-as-hell, and some moments actually get me thinking of Six Feet Under for the persistent emphasis on groove in the
tempo. The slick guitar leads adds a lot of melody to their sound, but the
riffing can go from everything to modern day death metal to classic thrash
metal, and the interaction between the two styles makes it quite versatile. Persistenseisn’t just another At the Gates clone in the death/thrash crowd, but seem to
actually have gone all-out to diversify themselves from an overflowing sea of
copy cats. The strong melody, energetic groove and tempo changes get me
thinking of the Swedish act Decadence; one of the few thrash acts that I actually really enjoy. A very
promising debut, and it’ll be interesting to see where they’ll take things
next.

Groove metal breathes through the heart of this album
Persistense's debut, In Blood and Heart, is a monster of a groovy death metal album. There's
infectious hooks and riffs all over the place mixed in with solos with a
simplistic drumming that guides the music along. The vocals are more done in a
shouted grunt than the typical unintelligible cookie monster growl that most
death metal bands have; it is still unintelligible but the sound is slightly a
welcome change from the typical standard. Altogether, the band presents what
can be called as mid paced death thrash, echoing influences from Testament to
Vader and even Obituary.
The album starts off with a beautiful orchestra
and piano introduction before the drums begin a battle march to signify what's
to come. Don't let this little peaceful interlude lull you; it's the only
respite the album offers. Following with "Further," the music kicks
into death 'n roll mode while chugging away - the Vader influences
from the album The Art
of War can be heard here. The vocals are strained and bellowed,
slightly buried in the music, which is somewhat of a good thing as it shows the
mediocre production, however very much detested because some people enjoy
crystal clear quality, makes the vocals seem very humanely done... at least for
death metal standards. Tracks like "Overcome" have much more of a
thrash sound to the music, focusing on the use of one guitar sounding very
prominent amongst the rest by delving into a few solos before letting the
rest of the instruments resume their pace. "Doomsday" has a very
slow, string plucked introduction that is very intriguing and gives the
listener a breathing moment before jumping back into the thrash metal vein.
Again, here the one guitar can be heard clearly throughout most of the song
while the rest of the music chimes in in the background.
The title track is the most cohesive song on the
album; there's a really clear, melodic solo in the middle of the song before
everything comes back together. Being the longest track on the album, it still
is not the highlight track (that award goes to "Doomsday" for its
unique structure). The final track, "Sick World," is a fast
paced chugger, hammering along before closing with a great solo at the end.
Altogether, the tracks compose one of the better debut albums a band has
released; not a single flaw can be picked out from any track. It is obvious of
the musicians' skill and dedication to their music, as well as their penchant
to try to sound as humane in the studio as possible without letting the music
tool programs run their lives to sound as mechanical as possible. While the
riffs can get repetitive at times, they are ultimately, a joy to listen to.
There's high hopes for these death thrash metallers yet.

Persistense is a band from Netherlands formed
in the year 2000. The name of the band is a contraction of the words "to
persist" and "intense". " In Blood and Heart " is the
first album of Persistense, showing a style different call of
"Swingthrash"... it is an eccentric name for a Metal style, at least
here in Brazil, "swingthrash" has a meaning that diverges of the
sonority of "In Blood and Heart"... then, insane readers, don't have
concerns, therefore "In Blood and Heart" doesn't bring any sonority
to shame the Metal, but just metallic sonorities. "In Blood and
Heart" is an album with Thrash Metal influences, however the final result
of the structure is a Thrash Metal with own identity, velocity, weight and
Death Metal in the vocal line. The timbre of the instruments has a sonority
style Swedish Death Metal, however the sonorous structure is totally Thrash
Metal, showing versatile riffs with a lot of variations. "In Blood and
Heart" is an album that presents several definitions, therefore the melt
of the elements that form the sonorous structure is decisive and indispensable
for the band to present your proposal with fidelity. The intention of the band
is to sound with own identity and the band gets to present in "In Blood
and Heart" sonorities with great moments through compositions with... own
identity. You perceive some influences in the songs, but are influences worked accurately
and don't endanger the final result of "In Blood and Heart",
therefore Thrash Metal of this album is very well made with great riffs.

Persistense aus den Niederlanden ist einmal mehr eine dieser
Bands, deren Musik keine Höhepunkte, Überraschungen oder Aha-Effekte bietet,
sondern einfach nur soliden Metal darbietet der keinem weh tut aber auch
niemanden zu Jubelschreien animiert. Zwar hat der moderne Death/Thrash des
Quintetts mit seinen Melodien so seine Momente, aber wirklich festigen kann
sich die Musik nicht im Gedächtnis des Hörers, da man einfach nur guten
Standard bietet, nicht mehr aber auch nicht weniger...
Die fünf Holländer sind durchaus geschickt an ihren Instrumenten,
leiden aber wie heutzutage so viele Bands an fehlenden Wiedererkennungswert,
markanten Songwriting und einem ausdrucksstarken Auftreten. Dies liegt zum
einen am recht eintönigen Hardcore-Shouting von Sänger Stefan, als auch am
Recycling-Songwriting, bei dem Riffs von The Haunted mit Elementen von Bay Area
Thrash-Bands oder sogar diversen Death Metal-Acts (Obituary, alte Pestilence
oder Asphyx kommen mir da in den Sinn) gemixt werden. Auch die hier und da
eingestreuten schwedischen Melodie-Riffs können das Debüt-Album der Holländer
nichts wirklich aufpeppen, da auch hier nichts Markantes hängenbleibt. Zwar ist
die Produktion schön organisch und dennoch angenehm druckvoll, aber eine gute
Produktion und fähige Musiker können noch lange nicht über ein mangelndes
Songwriting hinwegtäuschen.
Von daher kann ich für diesen Durchschnitts-Metal auch nur eine
durchschnittliche Note vergeben, sorry Jungs...

The Netherlands group Persistense has been on the
metallic march since 2000, and they have had a lot of acclaim by what I have
read. Calling their own style of metal at one time ‘Swingthrash’, the band was known
for original yet very heavy music... now with the release of full album number
one, the band is poised to take over the metal landscape.
Powered by a need to be making seismically heavy
but well written metal, Persistense has come
forth with a album that can be only described as almost unbridled chaos with
this overtone of pure technical havoc. Everything from Thrash, Extreme, Power
Metal to even having the Classic Metal elements all come together within this
extraordinary five piece - and develops into what could be called illustrious
in both form and raw explosiveness.
Nine songs populate their first full length
offering, called "In Blood And Heart" to make
you assured that there are people out in the world making sure metal in no ways
has become dull and predictable. Unyielding and relentless, Persistense takes
what they know musically and makes sure that is equally heavy and ass kicking
brutal in it attack, all the while making sure that the intelligence they have
as a group is never compromised.
This band really does have all of the makings and
talent to be a amazing force in metal, or even in music in general. Truly Persistense is a
indomitable band that has stepped out of the shadows and is in the forefront,
truly orchestrating a new genesis in what metal can be.

PERSISTENSE est un combo de
thrash-métal des Pays-Bas. Le nom du groupe est en fait une contraction des
mots « to persist » et « intense », voilŕ pour la petite histoire. Histoire qui
remonte ŕ l’an 2000 date de formation du combo avec aussi la sortie en 2004
d’un EP 6 titres auto-produit dans un style « swingthrash ». Mais ŕ la fin 2005
le line-up vole en éclat. Le leader Stefan recrute alors et relance la machine
pour nous proposer cette fois-ci quelque chose de plus dynamique, plus brutal
et radical tout en conservant au tout un certain groove. Un CD promo 8 titres
paru en 2008 annonce la couleur pour le premier véritable album « In Blood And
Heart » qui sort fin 2009.
Insertion immédiate de la galette dans le mange-disque et écoute attentive.
Aprčs une intro samplée orchestre et piano insidieux, le quintette part en
guerre avec un gros thrash brutal ŕ souhait dirigé par une voix plutôt growlée,
plutôt death. Les guitaristes envoient du gros son tous riffs dehors et
tranchent allčgrement dans le vif du sujet. Inutile de vous dire que ça
arrache, ça groove avec des élans speed et des mid-tempos aux climat malsain.
On navigue dans les eaux sales entre LAMB OF GOD, DEATH, SLAYER et OBITUARY.
Rien de trčs original me direz-vous. Pourtant on accroche dčs le départ avec
ces brűlots boostés par une rythmique bulldozer et on ne peut rester
insensibles devant tant d’efficacité procurée par du thrash pur jus auquel on
ajouté un soupçon de mélodie.
Les power-chords font trčs mal surtout ŕ notre nuque car le headbanging est
inévitable lors de l’audition. Le mélange thrash/death/groove est imparable,
c’est une évidence. Au milieu de chaque composition des petits « breaks »
samplés ou acoustiques viennent nous titiller les neurones et évitent la
monotonie d’un thrash monocorde.
Les influences dont j’ai parlé plus haut se retrouvent dans les morceaux mais
réduites ŕ leur plus simple expression car elles ont été digérées complčtement.
La formation Hollandaise se les ait pratiquement appropriées pour faire du neuf
avec du vieux.
Le résultat est lŕ, PERSISTENSE nous régale avec son thrash/death bien
construit, bien brutal, mais aussi bien émotionnel, on en redemande. « In Blood
And Heart » peut donc figurer en bonne place dans votre métalthčque, vous
verrez, l’essayer c’est l’adopter, comme je l’ai fait d’ailleurs.

Persistense
is een vijfmans thrash/deathmetal formatie uit Den Bosch die al een tijdje
meedraait in de Nederlandse metalscene. Na een aantal line-up wisselingen, een
in eigen beheer uitgebrachte EP en het voorprogramma van Testament te hebben
verzorgd, vonden de mannen het tijd worden voor een volledige CD. Na wat tijd
in de Excess-studio te hebben doorgebracht is er dan eindelijk In Blood
And Heart. Helaas voor hen heeft de producer niet zijn beste werk
afgeleverd.
De
tracks op zich zijn goed geschreven, vormen een goed geheel en er zitten
heerlijke riffs in die ik al snel mee zat te fluiten. De teksten zijn oké en de
zanglijnen zijn hier en daar wat voorspelbaar, maar over het algemeen toch
solide te noemen. Het bombastischeIntro is leuk,
maar ik had liever meteen wat van die lekkere riffs gehoord. Further heeft
een refreintje dat al na één keer horen in je geheugen gegrift staat, maar na
de plaat een paar keer beluisterd te hebben kon ik het refreintje dromen en werd
het een beetje vervelend. Muzikaal gezien wordt de plaat gaandeweg beter, met
als hoogtepunt de titeltrack In Blood And Heart.
Echter,
de productie is problematisch. Al bij het eerste nummer valt op dat de gitaren
zo ontzettend hard in de mix zitten, dat de rest behoorlijk ondersneeuwt. Ik
ben absoluut voor een lekkere muur van gitaargeluid, maar het moet niet zo zijn
dat de rest van de band daar onder lijdt. De zang is bijna niet te horen en
klinkt bovendien behoorlijk vlak en monotoon. Ik denk niet dat dit aan zanger
Stefan zijn kwaliteiten ligt, maar meer aan het feit dat de gitaren alle detail
wegblazen. De drums klinken redelijk, maar in de snelle stukken wordt het al
snel rommelig, voornamelijk weer door bovengenoemde gitaren. Op het volume na
klinken de gitaren prima: een lekker vet geluid en fijne thrashy riffs,
gecombineerd met prima solowerk.
Al met
al een prima plaat die een stuk prettiger te beluisteren was geweest als de
productie wat zorgvuldiger was gedaan.

Persistenza ed intensitŕ sono i due
sostantivi che formano il moniker Persistense, formazione olandese dedita ad un
thrash/death improntato all'impatto e all'assalto frontale da loro stessi
definito "swingthrash". Il cantante Stefan Van Vugt č il solo superstite
della lineup iniziale che, dopo la pubblicazione del primo EP, si č dissolta a
causa di diverbi interni: "In Blood and Heart", senza mettere da
parte l'irruenza degli esordi, si muove in territori piů accessibili puntando a
creare canzoni riconoscibili e facilmente memorizzabili senza dover per forza
cadere nella banalitŕ piů totale. Toglietevi dalla testa ritornelli catchy o
voci pulite: Stefan Van Vugt č senza alcun dubbio un discreto emulo di Martin
van Drunen e Patrick Mameli, ed il suo growl contribuisce senza alcun dubbio a
donare alla band un segno distintivo con i suoi vocalizzi estremi. Buona la
varietŕ delle composizioni che offrono una dinamicitŕ notevole, grazie ai
continui cambi di tempo e al gran lavoro del duo Van der Horst/Maas sempre in
bilico tra riff di chiara matrice thrash e ritmiche cariche di groove sempre
ben supportate da una sezione ritmica precisa e dotata di discreta fantasia. I
quaranta minuti di durata scorrono senza grossi problemi, anche se la varietŕ
non č sicuramente tra le armi migliori del combo che propone la medesima
ricetta sonora per tutte e nove le composizioni presenti in questo "In
Blood and Heart": fortunatamente la qualitŕ dei riff e delle composizioni
tiene alto l'interesse, e chi č alla ricerca di tanta sana violenza non avrŕ
certamente di che lamentarsi durante l'ascolto del debut degli olandesi. Si
dimostra all'altezza la produzione degli Excess Studio di Rotterdam, che
conferisce al prodotto un buon impatto pur rimanendo ancorata ad un suono
classico e lontano dall'esagerazione di certe produzioni attuali. "In
Blood and Heart" č un disco onesto e che non ha la pretesa di inventare
nulla, ciň non toglie che contenga momenti godibili ed intensi che nella loro
semplicitŕ riescono a farsi apprezzare senza troppi problemi. Dedicategli
qualche ascolto, non sarŕ sicuramente tempo perso.
