Those who read my reviews regularly must think I'm a very chauvinistic person. I come from Holland and most of the Dutch bands I review usually get a good rating. But believe me, if I do, then it is because it is really good and not because I hail from the low lands. The world-wide thrash/death revival can almost (I did say almost) be reduced to the Dutch thrash/death-revival. With good records from Hail of Bullets, Sinister, Legion of the Damned, Dead Head and a mini from Izegrim, thrash/death is hot. With Pestilence, God Dethroned and the new Thanatos to come, it looks like a never ending story.

And no matter how I tried not to be too positive about this release, I can't find anything to carp at. OK, they don't get on the same level as LOTD, but they come close. The riffs are simpler than LOTD uses to play them and also the songs vary more from each other. The mixes of old school thrash and death metal never sounded better on a Thanatos record. Stephan Gebédi grunts angrier than ever and with reason. With lyrics about the cruelties that happened during WWII, today's world leaders, religious fundamentalists and mass murderers you should not expect choir vocals. The band even put info with the promo to explain some of the lyrics. This, to avoid unnecessary controversy about them. It is just historical events or morbid fantasies.

Musically they lead you through fast aggressive death and tight grooving thrash parts. Personally I like the band the most when they play a bit more midtempo, then they really sound HEAVY. "Apostles of Damnation" even reminds me of Stephan's other band; Hail of Bullets. It is the slowest track on the record, but a very heavy one. That Thanatos knows where their roots lie, can be heard in the 2 covers on the album; "Dawn of Eternity" (Massacre) and "The Burning of Sodom" (Dark Angel) two very good examples of that.

Due to a bankruptcy of their (old) label back in 2006, they put the recording of this album on hold. I'm glad that the band decided to pick up their instruments again to finally finish this record and found Deity Down Records to release it. Also the production shouldn’t hold you back from buying this record, but what else could we expect with a mix from Dan Swanö.

Personal favourite: "And Jesus Wept", because of the (too short) nice tight riffing part.

Holland's Thanatos are true veterans of the European metal scene, with a career now spanning well over two decades, despite never landing a large following. Justified Genocide is their 5th full-length album in all those years, but it offers a worthy dose of chunky and excitable thrashing death metal; ample evidence that the band has not lost its drive along the way. That said, this new album isn't about to shatter any boundaries or earn the band a heap of new fans; it's just business as usual. Fans of fellow Dutch death/thrash band Legion of the Damned (formerly Occult) will find a lot to appreciate with this band's similar, simple approach.

Rooted in the traditional German thrash metal, early Florida death metal and a heavy dose of Slaytanic influence, the Dutchmen bludgeon their way across 11 tracks. "They Feed on Fear" starts off as a simplistic pit anthem before picking up into a more sporadic and exciting thrash riff. "Destruction. Chaos. Creation." slogs forth at a slow, precise pace, it feels almost as if a lumbering titan is draggings its enormous arms along behind as it lays waste to a city. Other choice tracks include the moody "Apostles of Damnation" (with a slow brutality to it reminiscent of Morbid Angel's album Domination), and the blazing speed of "The Netherworld". The CD also includes two tracks from a 7" a few years back, including a decent cover of Dark Angel's classic "The Burning of Sodom" which I daresay might sound better than the original. Not all of the sounds are very good, however, there are a handful which felt more like filler while I was waiting for something exciting to happen.

The sound of the album is raw and crunchy, but it really gives the album a fist to the face appeal which should please death and thrash purists who want a no-nonsense, brutal delivery rather than something which sounds like it was recorded in a billion measure for measure takes. This band could probably plug in at the local concert hall and deliver this sound right through the speakers. The lyrics follow the expected themes of social unrest, religion and the occult. There isn't a large fanbase for a band like this, they write in an old school style without a lot of the technicality that many younger death metal fans desire. But in this case it's unecessary, as this album was written for thrashers who want a brutal edge to the form. If that niche includes you, then Thanatos does deliver.

Thanatos is alweer sinds 1984 bezig en zeker in die begintijd was ‘n thrash/death band in Nederland bijzonder. Nu (gelukkig) al lang niet meer. Wat dat betreft misgun ik zo’n vasthoudende band hun 25-jarig jubileum absoluut niet. Als het zou kloppen tenminste, want in ‘92 stopte Thanatos ermee. Om 7 jaar later gereanimeerd verder te gaan, maar dan wel met bijna ‘n compleet andere line-up. (Uiteraard inclusief Stephan Gebédi, want ‘n Thanatos zonder hem is ondenkbaar). Vergeet ik bijna dat ze in ‘85 ook al kortstondig uit elkaar gingen. Wat dondert het. Wat hun werkwijze ook is, Thanatos heeft nog geen enkele slechte of zelfs maar matige plaat afgeleverd. En daar komt met Justified Genocide geen verandering in!

Maar zo vanzelfsprekend is het niet dat deze nieuwe cd a.s. maandag in de winkels ligt. Nadat de opnames in 2006 (!) begonnen ging hun toenmalige platenlabel failliet. Lekker dan. Maar er is meer voor nodig om Thanatos uit het veld te slaan, dus ging de band stug verder. En je ziet het, de aanhouder wint. Met dank aan Deity Down Records (all the way from Breda). De cd klinkt erg vet en ook het bijbehorende boekje ziet er meer dan prima uit. Dat laatste is dan weer de verdienste van bassist Marco. (Niet eerlijk als je net zo makkelijk uitblinkt in 2 dingen). In dat boekje staan ook de teksten afgedrukt en die gaan over genocide op alle mogelijke manieren. Duidelijk nietwaar? Toch vond de band het nodig om ‘n toelichting op hun websites te plaatsen. Volkerenmoord, nazisme, religie…het blijven gevoelige onderwerpen voor de gemiddelde inwoner van Urk.

De muziek zelf behoeft gelukkig geen nadere uitleg. Wederom ‘n geweldige kruising tussen de hiervoor genoemde stijlen. Iedere fan kan ook deze cd weer blind aanschaffen. Zo heel veel nieuws is er niet te melden: Death-loopje hier, Kreator-riffje daar, overgoten met ‘n zware Slayer-saus. Vooral de snellere nummers (of delen daarvan) zijn smullen. Hier is Thanatos op z’n best. Persoonlijke favorieten: The Netherworld en vooral Dawn Of Eternity (cover van Massacre). Eerlijk gezegd kan ik geen enkel matig nummer aanwijzen. Alleen al dat is knap na zo veel jaar. Thanatos is en blijft ‘n band om trots op te zijn. (En dat bedoel ik niet overdreven chauvinistisch, want voordat je het weet moet ik straks daarover ook tekst en uitleg gaan geven…).

Thanatos is a very constant band and was one of the first extreme Metal acts emerging from the vaults of the Netherlands. 'Justified Genocide' is their newest release and shows the band once again at their very best. Straight Death / Thrash Metal which combines the best characteristics of the old school style as well as more 'modern' structures and riffs. It’s a damn shame that Thanatos have always been buried deep in the underground, because these Dutch guys rule supreme. The songs vary from crushing mid tempo sections to faster, sometimes blasting parts. The brutal but also melodic guitar work is far above the average crap you’ll sometimes get if you listen to a so called old school act or a dubious reunion album. The drummer beats the shit out of his kit and adds some nice variations to the tracks. The furious vocals fit the music perfect and the general impression is simply excellent. Thanatos create an eerie and dark atmosphere with professional high energy songwriting and an admirable sense for the right riffs at the right time. The production is clean and leaves no questions at all. So what you have to expect is a great sounding Death / Thrash Metal release with some modern influences and inspirations. Fans of Sinister, early Morbid Angel, Asphyx, Hail Of Bullets or Possessed shouldn’t hesitate to get their copy of 'Justified Genocide'. Don’t miss the pioneers of the Dutch extreme Metal scene.

Justified Genocide marks Thanatos' 25 years anniversary, and while releasing 5 albums in 25 years isn't exactly impressive per se, it's easy to tell that Thanatos is concentrating on quality rather than quantity. The first step in the act's relentless pursuit of perfection in all aspects of the listening experience is to hire Swedish musician and producer extraordinaire Dan Swanö (EDGE OF SANITY, BLOODBATH, MOONTOWER). Justified Genocide's sound is huge, crystal clear and sharp and every instrument is given its own space. There's also an epic feel that permeates the album, which is no doubt the work of Swanö's production. Thanatos' desire to make compelling music within the fusion of ballsy thrash metal, the density of death metal and arching melodic lead riffing, is outstanding to witness and their musical outcome will without a doubt appeal to fans of old school thrash as well as melodic European death metal.

Many highlights are to be found on Justified Genocide. One of them, the stomping opening song 'They Feed on Fear' features an arsenal of skilfully crafted and unique leads. 'They Feed on Fear' demonstrates the sheer power that Thanatos generate with furious blast beats, crushing riffs, an omnipresent melodic lead guitar, intense harsh vocals and a clever mixture of faster and more mid-paced parts. This track has two memorable lead breakdowns and especially the second one rips your heart out with its twin-bass/lead guitar attack. One will notice that the lead guitar and bass compete to see which can spin up with the most achingly melodic leads. Simply outstanding and Justified Genocide has tearing and crushing guitar riffs that meet melodic tremolo picking leads throughout the whole album.

Thanatos, the pioneers of the Dutch extreme metal scene, has returned with a crowning achievement in the death/thrash metal genre and it's hard to believe that the act is still underground after 25 years or existence. Justified Genocide really does come across like a major label release and it isn’t much to complain about. One possible minor complaint to some is that out of the 11 songs on the first album in 5 years, only 8 of them are brand new. Thanatos decided to include the two-track 2006 EP which features 'And Jesus Wept', a re-recorded song off of their 1992 album Realm of Ecstacy, and their blazing cover of the DARK ANGEL classic 'The Burning of Sodom'. Also included is a newly recorded cover of 'Dawn of Eternity' by the U.S. death metal act MASSACRE. However, if one doesn't care for bonus and cover tracks, the remaining 8 tracks are of such great quality that one simply can't afford to miss this stellar album. Highly recommended for fans of SINISTER, MORBID ANGEL as well as groovy, stomping and melodic death metal in vein of DISMEMBER.

The music itself is simply amazing, there's no other way to put it. There's no doubt that the song writing skills of the band are on a high level and coming from experienced veterans of the extreme metal scene, Justified Genocide is written to be an epic piece of music, with a grand vision in mind, and progresses forward constantly, all the while providing recurring themes at appropriate times that allow it to flow along fluidly and transition well as it moves from theme to theme. The lyrics are more intelligent, heartfelt and well written than any of their lyrics on previous albums, so heartfelt that the band decided to release a statement that the band is definitely not supporting right-winged ideologies! The lyrics deal mainly with historical events such as for example the WWII and the atrocities that went on in the concentration camps. 'March of the Infidels' deals about religion and Thanatos states that 'religious fundamentalists (no matter what religion they follow) are the real Nazis of today... From the lyrics to the music and production; there's something classy about Justified Genocide...

Anyone who's still raging over the HAIL OF BULLETS record (and you should be) needs to know that two of those guys are from this legendary Dutch band. THANATOS never seemed able to catch a break when they first came out, and even their reformation has been hampered by label closings and delays. Finally, four years after they halted production on "Justified Genocide" due to the shuttering of previous label Black Lotus, the album sees the light of day -- and it's another proud milestone in the canon of Dutch heavy metal.

Blistering thrash is the order of the day with THANATOS, plenty of effortless blast beats and furious d-beat propulsion. It's all delivered with a thick, dense, ripping production and a venomous dose of death metal atmosphere, for a sound that comes off much more old-school than the typical melodic Euro-thrash of modern days. The vocals are a ragged, frenzied bark and the riffs flail and fly with breakneck speed — and lest you think melody can't exist in such a brutal atmosphere, dig the soaring midsection of "They Feed on Fear" for an oasis amid the sonic carnage, or the doomy, ASPHYX-like soloing that crops up in several places.

Nothing THANATOS is doing here is particularly innovative, of course, but their strength lies in being able to cram a lot of dynamics into their songwriting without losing their rough-hewn edge or getting too flighty for their own good. The songs on "Justified Genocide" aren't paint-by-numbers verse-chorus death metal raveups, and there are plenty of brooding slow parts and unique guitar work to offset the faster bits. Even a number as simple as the stomping, midtempo "The Devil's Triangle" gets the blood boiling by sheer force of execution and slow build alone, while "The Netherworld" drops a perfect little doom midsection into an otherwise raging inferno of a song, rendering the fast bits that much more lethal.

Twenty-five years after their formation, THANATOS are more brutal than ever, and their workingman's death/thrash is executed with equal parts precision and rabid enthusiasm. "Justified Genocide" is a satisfying and enjoyable trip down a dark path, and an effort that deserves more attention. P.S. Watch for the MASSACRE and DARK ANGEL covers as bonus tracks at the end — well done!

Mit Sicherheit hatten es de Holländer in ihrer Bandgeschichte bisher nicht immer gerade einfach .Nachdem ihr letztes Label wohl irgendwie Pleite gegangen ist ,herrschte ja nun doch einige Jahre die absolute Funkstille ,bevor man nun endlich wieder ein Label gefunden hat ,welches bereit war ,neues Material zu veröffentlichen . Eigentlich ist es ja doch etwas verwunderlich , das es so lange gedauert hat ,denn musikalisch gesehen ,spielen die Leute schon in der Oberliga . Von Beginn an wird hier auf technisch sehr hohem Niveau gearbeitet ohne auch nur an irgend einer Stelle zu schwächeln .Vor allem verstehen es die Holländer auch dieses mal wieder hervorragend ,die verschiedensten Stilelemente des Death /Thrash miteinander zu verknüpfen ,ohne hierbei jedoch den Spielfluss zu verlieren .Obwohl man sich zwar verstärkt der old scholl Schiene widmet ,kommen aber auch eher etwas „modern“ wirkende Strukturen zum Vorschein .Vor allem im Riffbereich und bei der Drumarbeit zeigt man sich herbei enorm vielfältig .Da kommt es einem schon teilweise so vor ,als würde man doch glatt von einen D-Zug überrollt werden .Dabei lasse die aber nicht mal komplett den Knüppel aus dem Sack und überschütten dich mit massig Blastbeat Attacken .Ne ,man ist auch stets darauf bedacht ,so eine gewisse Melodik mit einfließen zu lassen ,ohne hierbei jedoch dem Geschehen die enorme Energie zu nehmen . Eher wirken die ruhigeren Einlagen so ,als sollte man ganz schnell neue Kraft tanken ,um dann im nächsten Moment auch wieder voll abgehen zu können .Vor allem was die Riffgestaltung bei den Burschen betrifft ,so legt man hier wahnsinnig was an den Tag und zeigt sich schon fast erschreckend vielseitig .Genau so stark und variantenreich zeigt sich auch der Gesang .Im Wechsel zwischen Death- und Thrashshouts knallen die hier einem fett was entgegen . Und genau diese Art des verschiedenen Ausdrucks passt hierbei perfekt zum musikalischen Geschehen . Besser ist das absolut nicht mehr zu machen . Auf “JUSTIFIED GENOCIDE” passt einfach alles zusammen . Neben dem wirklich starkem songwriting und nen Haufen Abwechslung ,kann man auch produktionstechisch voll abräumen . Bei den hier 11 angebotenen Stücken gibt’s absolut kein Stück ,welches man als Totalausfall bewerten könnte .Selbst die beiden Coverversion - Dawn Of Eternity (Massacre ) & The Burning Of Sodom ( Dark Angel ) - können sich echt sehen lassen und stellen einmal mehr unter Beweis ,auf welch technisch hohen Niveau man sich bewegt . Thrash - / Death Fans der alten Schule werden mit diesem Teil genau so ,wie die Anhänger eher etwas modernerer Klänge , ihr absolute Freude haben .Pflichtkauf !

This one was worth the wait.

Indefatigable. That’s the only word I can think of to describe the morbid Dutchie vets of THANATOS. It was getting a little disconcerting, waiting over four years since 2004’s excellent “Undead Unholy Divine” (we were just a wee baby website when that one hit the shelves). But the marriage of THANATOS and a quality label like Deity Down seems like a brilliant combination, and without edging into fanboy territory, this disc delivers everything a thrash and death metal fan could want.

Stephan Gebédi’s creepy zombie-barking is raspier than ever, and his intricate back-and-forth riffing with Paul Baayans hasn’t dulled at all. Honestly, I don’t know what you’re doing messing around with this genre if the chugging suicide-machine-awaiting-the-hour-of-reprisal delights of “The Devil’s Triangle” or “March of the Infidels” doesn’t send a thrill up your leg. This band could make an accordion sound like a deadly instrument. Evidence of seasoned quality jumps out everywhere; they’re impossible to avoid. Just listen to the majestic, spicy intro to “The Netherworld” that plunges into thrashing chaos, only to slow deftly into a canvas for a sweeping, melodic guitar solo. Plus, they dug up an old DARK ANGEL cover and tacked it onto the end. You know what to do, people.

Along with classic acts like PESTILENCE, ASPHYX, SINISTER, SEMPITERNAL DEATHREIGN and tons more one should not forget THANATOS, the ancient force from the Netherlands, a band that managed to release two classic -by now- albums “Emerging From The Netherworlds” and “Realm Of Ecstasy” via Shark Records. In my humble opinion both records are excellent examples of how different THANATOS has been during an era where most Swedish Death Metal acts -for instance- sounded very much alike. The band reformed with a new line-up around 2000-2001 and released the great comeback album “Angelic Encounters” via the –now defunct- Hammerheart Records. I admit that “Angelic Encounters” managed to instantly grasp my attention back then and I admired the fact that THANATOS remained faithful to their classic Death / Thrash roots (one has also to remember that in 2000 - 2001 very few serious Death Metal bands have been around – Black Metal was still the “hot trend”). I am glad that back in the day I managed to interview the band for the –also defunct- Greek magazine Metal Invader. In all honesty I still don’t remember why I never managed to check out the band’s following album “Undead. Unholy. Divine”, even though the label that released it (Black Lotus Records) was a Greek one and I knew the people behind the label personally. Anyways, here we are with the brand new THANATOS album called “Justified Genocide” which will be released on the 6th of April via the new label (from Netherlands) Deity Down Records. My first listening experience of “Justified Genocide” took place before the recent HAIL OF BULLETS gig in Athens (with attendance of only 50 people!). For me this was a very special gig not only because HAIL OF BULLETS literally crushed and burned but also because I had the honor to personally meet Paul and Stephan who both proved to be incredibly cool (high guys!) Anyways, Paul was really kind to let me listen to a couple of songs from the new THANATOS album before the HAIL OF BULLETS gig started. I admit that I was instantly hooked by the new material of THANATOS! Ultra solid sound, sharp guitars spitting out loads of Thrash / Death riffs, a devastating production…these have been my first impressions. Sadly the listening experience had to be interrupted rather abruptly since the support band had to soundcheck. So I had to wait a couple of weeks before being able to check the album in its full glory. After I listened to the album on my own, my initial impression instantly changed: at fist I thought that the album was good, but I was wrong, the album is just great! Without exaggeration the THANATOS guys managed to come up with a fucking solid Death / Thrash Metal album that totally justifies their reputation and cult status. Even though you will hardly find anything “new” or “unique” in their sound, THANATOS delivers a lethal dose of hostile, full-speed Death / Thrash full of great sharp riffs, possessed vocals and unstoppable drumming. I have been especially surprised by the fact that the guitars didn’t sound at all like ASPHYX or HAIL OF BULLETS… Paul and Stephan managed to maintain a different style for THANATOS preserving of course their classic influences and obvious obsession with Thrash Metal. The production sounds huge but is not over-produced or polished, to the contrary, it manages to reveal the power and effectiveness of the songs in their full glory! I think the new material will sound killer live, but I am afraid that I will hardly have the chance to witness that first hand (perhaps I should visit them in Holland, hmm…). In total, we have here 9 new songs and 2 bonus tracks from their 2006 7’’ that included a re-recording of “…And Jesus Wept” (originally on “Realm Of Ecstasy”) plus 'The Burning Of Sodom' cover of – you know whom. To sum it up, THANATOS remains – without doubt - a solid force that manages to create some crushing Death / Thrash of great quality and deserve every possible support!

THANATOS, para aquel metalero que no los conozca, son una de las formaciones más antiguas del death europeo, datando su año de nacimiento en 1984 (casi nada!!). Estos holandeses tuvieron una primera época que se alargó hasta 1992, en la que lanzaron un par de discos, "Emerging From The Netherworlds" (1990) y "Realm Of Ecstasy" (1992), pero que finalizó bruscamente ante los problemas internos que surgieron entre sus músicos. Tras largos años embarcados en otras aventuras, llega 1999 y uno de su miembros puso en marcha la reunión de la banda aunque con una line-up distinta a la original, que incluía a gente de SINISTER, HOUTWISER y CREMATION. Con aquellos músicos lanzaron en el 2000 "Angelic Encounters", pero tuvieron algunas deserciones y tuvieron que empezar de cero otra vez. En el 2002 grabaron de manera casera unos temas para buscar un nuevo contrato discográfico y alguno de esos cortes acabaron en su ep del 2002 "Beyond Terror" (lanzado a través de Baphomet Records). En el 2003 consiguieron fichar con Black Lotus y en el 2004 lanzaron "Undead, Unholy, Divine". Justo cuando se disponían a lanzar este quinto trabajo que hoy nos ocupa y titulado "Justified Genocide", en el 2005, el sello entró en bancarrota y se quedaron con el culo al aire, hasta tal punto de que nada más se supo de ellos, justo hasta ahora. Deity Down les propuso rescatar aquel inédito álbum y lo lanza al mercado en estos días.

THANATOS tocan temas "espinosos" en algunas de sus letras y quieren dejar totalmente claro (en una segunda hoja promocional) que no son una formación nazi ni quieren ensalzar absolutamente nada de esa gentuza. El problema viene por las letras vertidas en temas como "The Devil's Triangle" y "Upwards Spiritual Evolution" en los que se hacen eco de la alianza secreta que se formó, en plena segunda guerra mundial, entre algunos altos cargos nazis, ciertos masones y ocultistas, y que culminaba en el castillo de Wewelsburg, lugar donde celebraban sus sesiones (ndr: el propio Adolf Hitler formó un "cuerpo de élite" encargado de buscar ciertos objetos religiosos/mágicos por todo el mundo para satisfacer las necesidades/exigencias de aquellas reuniones, "expediciones" que incluso pasaron por nuestro país, lugar en el que buscaron con ahínco el cáliz de la última cena, por la zona de Montserrat, en Barcelona), así como "The Netherworld" donde relatan las atrocidades cometidas en los campos de concentración nazis, o "March Of The Infidels" donde comparan la actuación de los actuales fanáticos religiosos con los antiguos nazis. Creo que dejan bien claro que no siguen esa inclinación política (dan explicaciones en la citada hoja promocional pero este texto es un análisis, no una novela!! De todas formas, puedes leer las aclaraciones en su propia web) y me ha parecido lógico transmitiros esta aclaración.

Una vez finiquitada la pequeña controversia que puede suscitar este disco, es hora de saber que incluye en lo musical, y si has oído alguna de sus anteriores obras, ya sabrás que esta formación hace suyo (nacieron en esa época) el más malvado speed/thrash ochentero y lo mezclan, con enorme calidad, con toneladas del más moderno death metal. Su sonido es totalmente explosivo y cañero, en una onda a lo SADUS, aunque le quitan hierro al asunto incorporando guitarras solistas muy melódicas y pasajes thrashicos bastante más moderados.

Si te gusta lo expuesto, dudo mucho que no puedas disfrutar de "They Feed On Fear", un espídico corte, thrashico hasta la médula, que no conoce freno hasta que llega la zona central, cargada de solistas muy melódicas y abandonando la velocidad casi por completo. "Destruction.Chaos.Creation" tiene un inicio muy a lo groove/thrash, con ritmos lentos y machacones, que va poco a poco desplegando sus virtudes. Voz oscura, buen toque técnico y mucho control instrumental en sus primeros momentos, dejándose llevar a partir de la mitad por un aumento considerable de la velocidad y la mala leche. "The Devil's Triangle" me ha traido recuerdos de TOTENMOND por esa especie de metal potente y thrashificado, a lo medio tiempo marcado, y esa voz recitando con mucha mala leche la letra. Incluso el toque apunkarrado/hardcore de los minutos finales suena a la citada banda, con un bajo poderoso haciéndose oír (algo no muy común en el thrash/death) y una solista muy melódica adueñándose de los últimos compases.

En "March Of The Infidels" hacen suya la velocidad del death nórdico (asuecado), con la batería de Yuri (MELECHESH) dejándose notar. Voz incansable a lo primeros SEPULTURA y mucha caña con cierto toque hardcore (llegando al final) son otras de sus armas. El tema título, "Justified Genocide", toma para su letra algunas de las acciones que los mayores asesinos de la historia llevaron a cabo (Hitler, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot o Sadam Hussein) amparándose en la impunidad de ser como dioses en sus países. Musicalmente destaca su velocidad en plan destrozón y esa malvada voz, aunque salpican el tema con algunos pasajes más relajados y machacones. Con "The Netherworld" nos enfrentamos al corte más desenfrenado del compacto, llegando a rozar la velocidad del black en más de una ocasión. Muchísima velocidad, buenos cambios rítmicos (zona central en plan death/doom melódica y arrastrada, y final a lo thrash/punk descarnado), caña a raudales y voz forzando al máximo.

"Dawn Of Eternity" sigue amarrada a la alta velocidad, aunque ahora en plan thrash/death asfixiante de raíces ochenteras. Batería muy saltarína, excelentes guitarras, buenas variaciones rítmicas y solistas "aulladoras" soleando a gran velocidad (muy típicas del thrash ochentero). Algo que sabiendo que es una versión de los MASSACRE, no nos extrañará. Con "Apostle Of Damnation" llegamos al tema más extenso del compacto y lo hacemos a ritmo marcial en su inicio, gracias a las machaconas guitarras (muy lentas y que seguirán así durante todo este extenso corte) y esa batería en plan redoble militar. Medio tiempo super arrastrado y machacón, con voz recitando de manera lenta la letra y unos ejercicios de la guitarra solista muy interesantes. Un tema curioso que se aparta de lo presentado por la banda hasta ahora. Como cierre del compacto nos ofrecen "Upwards Spiritual Evolution", un corte hardcorero, sin freno y de duración escasa, consiguiendo arrasar con lo poco que quedaba en pie.

Además de los temas citados, en la primera tirada han incluído dos bonus tracks (poseemos esa edición gracias al sello), el primero de esos bonus es "And Jesus Wept", un corte que continúa con la vena desenfrenada del anterior tema aunque mucho más thrashico y casi doblando su duración, y el segundo es otra versión, en este caso de los excelentes DARK ANGEL, "The Burning Of Sodom". Thrash ochentero ejecutado con muy mala leche, a gran velocidad y con Yuri intentado seguir el baqueteo que el gran Glenn Hoglan nos ofrecía en la original. Se nota que la banda es seguidora de DARK ANGEL así que no me extraña que hayan tratado de ser fieles a la idea original.

Bueno disco el que nos ofrecen estos veteranísimos de la escena thrash/death, y que estoy seguro vas a disfrutar de lo lindo, sobretodo si eres de los que les gusta indagar en las raíces de las cosas (esta gente perteneció a los orígenes del death metal y no abandonan dicho sonido). Quiero creer a la banda cuando aclaran que no son nazis (el batería es de origen judio...) y espero que la polémica no les pase factura. No tenían obligación de excusarse o explicarse, pero lo han hecho (algo no muy común).

New Wave of Dutch Metal in the year 2009?! It starts to look like that. After the reunited Asphyx, bringing a new record during this year and also leading to the superb new death metal war machine Hail of Bullets, the reformed Pestilence, a new record later this year from God Dethroned, Dead Head’s great thrash attack and some smaller Dutch bands, we now also have a new Thanotos record called “Justified Genocide”. Let’s take a look if it is justifiable.

Like Hail of Bullets and also the new “Passiondale” album of God Dethroned, Thanatos inspirational thoughts were the 2nd world war and that it is time to thrash over Europe by the 3rd death metal world war. After the invasion of the fore mentioned troops also Thanatos joins the war metal battle with their latest release. All together they can finally take over Germany and the world domination this time.

Thanatos first war started already from 1984 and lasted till around 1992; emerging from the Netherworlds with a realm of ecstasy leaving two big traces in the history of death trashed metal, before raising the white flag.
The oldest Dutch death metal act emerged with an angelic encounter in the year 2000 to bring us again terror beyond. After 2004 they were left Undead. Unholy. Divine by their Greek comrades Black Lotus, who disappeared all of a sudden from the battlefield. This gave Thanatos the strength to escape their death once more and after doing several projects, the possibility to enter Sweden’s Unisound to enrol with death metal master Dan Swano their new “new world order” strategy.

And with this new release they are far away from death and even more alive than ever. Master Swano gave Thanatos a perfect full and warm death thrash sound (with some very nice melodic solo guitars!); the soldiers have written their best songs ever by taking notice from the past and incorporating all their trademarks in this new genocide. You can hear historical thrashing landmarks, which made the first albums as effective as a battle tank, but also the death armour of their later releases. This is the perfect combination for thrashing all over Europe and leaving death and destruction after the genocide.

Deity Down Records added also the “The Burning of Sodom” EP as bonus, together with the cover of Massacres “Dawn of Eternity”, bringing you eleven death thrash rockets, which are all outstanding aggressive explosions. Take up this album, get brain washed and prepare for the final kill.

Once again a justified Dutch genocide for the “New Wave of Dutch Metal”!

Stephan Gebédi must feel like finally having been able to take a crap after several years of constipation now that the 'new' Thanatos album "Justified genocide" is finally out. The album was done for some years but no record label dared to release it until Gerard from Deity Down Records came along and showed he had balls.

I'm glad "Justified genocide" is now finally unleashed upon mankind since the album deserves to be heard. It's by no means any less than the gazillion records being thrown at us from all directions. In fact, what sets this album apart is the nice variation in and between the songs. The cool album's artwork was done by bass player Marco de Bruin and the beefy mixing/mastering was done by none other than Dan Swanö. Additionally, Stephan has written some excellent wicked and thought provoking lyrics, for a track-by-track lyrical breakdown check http://www.thanatos.info/html/main.htm.

The album opens with all guns blazing with "They feed on fear". The song is fast, contains some melody, catchy as hell and is my personal fave. But rest assured that the remainder of the album contains some sweet thrash/death. "Destruction.Chaos.Creation" is a sexy follow-up song which starts out doomy but soon explodes and finishes you off with its scream along chorus. "The devil's triangle", "The netherworld" and "Upward spiritual evolution" showcase a plethora of kick ass pace changes. "March of the infidels" speedy delivery is an auditorial and lyrical assault on anything religious. Some tracks contain a multiple vocal tracks of which the title song has a Macabre- esque feel to the vocals. During last year's CIM festival Kam Lee told me he really likes the Massacre cover by Thanatos so if that's not a compliment that I don't know what is!

The album also contains the 2006 EP as a nice bonus which has a re-recording of oldie "And Jesus wept" and the "The burning of Sodom" cover.

All in all a good album which should've been given a release much earlier. It won't make too many new fans among the current deathcore loving internet kiddies but I'm sure Stephan prefers old balding metalheads anyway ha!

Holland’s Thanatos is back this year with only their fifth album in close to twenty five years of existence. The band started out in 1984 as probably the first extreme metal band from Holland and from then to now has steadily built itself a reputation for kicking ass.

Justified Genocide sees the band continue to do what they do best. This is ass kicking death thrash that has old school written all over it. No Swedish melodies, breakdowns or anything remotely trendy for this lot. The band write thrash metal songs like they always did and while the mix may have become a little more rabid with a slight injection of death metal into their sound its only a good thing. Right from album opener They Feed on Fear it’s pretty clear that Thanatos is in fine form. Equal parts German thrash, Bay Area thrash and just a slight touch of the Stockholm death metal sound means Justified Genocide is angry, rabid and brutal enough to kick your ass into next week.

Stand out tracks include Destruction Chaos Creation with a solid thrash groove and wild but vintage thrash soloing, Justified Genocide is another excellent song with some serious Dark Angel worship happening in the riffing. Apostles of Damnation slows things down with a mid tempo groove and great vocals while Upwards Spiritual Evolution is some more rabid thrash. The album ends with a completely awesome cover of Dark Angel’s The Burning of Sodom.

While Thanatos has not done anything new or path breaking on Justified Genocide, they have managed to put together an album that should make most fans of the old school nod their head in approval. This is a fun and very aggressive thrash album that is completely trend free and well worth checking out.

Een kwart eeuw Thanatos, dat moet gevierd worden. Hoe? Simpel, met plaat nummer vijf, Justified Genocide welteverstaan. Deze metal veteranen van eigen bodem geven de liefhebbers van zowel death metal als de extremere thrash precies wat ze nodig hebben. Juist, furieuze death metal, vol chaos, snauwende vocalen en de nodige variatie.

Dit alles zit verpakt in een relatief heldere en lichte productie. Een goede zaak in dit geval, want alle factoren op dit album komen erg goed tot hun recht. Zoals gezegd speelt variatie ook (weer) een rol op de nieuwe Thanatos. Neem bijvoorbeeld Destruction.Chaos.Creation, subtiel dringt deze track uw gehoorgang binnen om zich na enige tijd te ontpoppen als een death/thrash kraker van formaat. Lekker hoor, vooral in combinatie met het doodse arsenaal aan rauwe stemmen die op deze plaat te horen zijn. Wat ik ook erg kan waarderen zijn de songteksten van Justified Genocide. Ze zullen voor de lichtvoetige medemens onder ons uiteraard weer ver over het randje zijn omdat diezelfde medemens niet verder kijkt dan de neus lang is. Wellicht is dat ook de reden dat de band de nodige uitleg aan de songteksten heeft gekoppeld, deze zijn ook op de website van het viertal te vinden. Oorlog, religie, het zaaien van (onnodige) angst, maar ook buitenaardse fantasieën, alles komt op brute wijze langs op dit album. Nog een luistertipje? Pak The Netherworld er eens bij en laat u gaan op deze gevarieerde track die met momenten heerlijk wegstampt.

Dan komen we aan bij de bonustracks. Zowel And Jesus Wept als The Burning Of Sodom werden al eerder uitgekakt door deze mannen. In 2006 om precies te zijn. En inderdaad, laatstgenoemde is een cover van thrashlegende Dark Angel. Dit is overigens niet de enige cover want tussen de reguliere tracks vind je Dawn Of Eternity, origineel van Massacre. De fan krijgt dus naast imposant eigen werk ook de nodige extra's en dat maakt het geheel zeker de moeite waard. Op naar de 50 jaar dacht ik zo!

Wie kent de naam niet? Thanatos draait al 25 jaar mee in de underground scene. Het nieuwe Nederlandse label Deity Down Records brengt nu het nieuwe album op de markt van deze cultband pur sang.

Controverse omhult de band al jaren, dit album heeft wederom teksten waar veel mensen een wenkbrauw bij op zullen trekken. Nummers over massamoordenaars, buitenaardse wezens die de wereld komen veroveren, gaskamers in concentratiekampen en een aanval op alle geloofsuitingen. Muzikaal is het geheel een interessante mix tussen ouderwetse thrash en death metal. Vanaf het openingsnummer is duidelijk dat de band geen rekening houdt met gevoelige oren. Met een ouderwetse rauwe mix door Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Bloodbath) klinkt het geheel lekker doch achterhaald. Niks mis met deze ouderwetse aanpak natuurlijk maar het verkleind wel de doelgroep gigantisch. De nummers zitten goed in elkaar en knallen goed uit de speakers, stilzitten is haast onmogelijk op dit aanstekelijke gebeuk. Mijn favorieten zijn onder andere “Dawn of Eternity” en “Aposites of Damnation”, deze laatste bevat zowaar wat melodie en wordt wat trager gespeeld dan de rest van het album. Hierna beuken we weer gewoon verder, dus ben maar niet bang dat we meer melodie te verorberen krijgen.

Eindbeoordeling;
We hebben dus te maken met een cult act uit het extreme genre. Dit maken ze waar op deze schijf, extreme rauwe death/thrash vliegt je om de oren. Voor de liefhebbers van dit genre lijkt me dit een aanrader, ik kan er in ieder geval best van genieten.

Door het succes van Hail Of Bullets zou je bijna vergeten dat er nog een kant-en-klaar Thanatos album op de plank lag. Het Nederlandse label Deity Down zag er wel brood in en brengt de CD nu alsnog op de markt. Goede zaak, want hoewel de band rond zanger/gitarist Stephan Gebédi de laatste jaren voor een brutere benadering kiest, heeft vooral de mengeling van death en thrash metal van de Rotterdammers altijd iets unieks en eigens gehad. 'Justified Genocide' laat beide kanten van de band horen. Het album opent erg woest, met een hoop blastbeats, snelle riffs en blaffende grunts, maar later komt met 'March Of The Infidels' en 'The Netherworld' ook een stel nummers in de oudere Thanatos-stijl voorbij. Het zijn momenten waarop in de muziek duidelijk de invloed van een vroege thrashband als Possessed doorklinkt; een effect wat op deze CD door het afwijkende gitaargeluid trouwens nog eens flink wordt versterkt. Een aantal tracks springt er duidelijk uit. Zo kent 'Destruction.Chaos.Creation' al vroeg op de CD een vrij ongebruikelijke opbouw, is het navolgende 'The Devil's Triangle' juist weer opvallend compact en explosief, en weet 'Apostles Of Damnation' met spannende, slome riffs en statige drums ook erg te boeien. Een ander pluspunt zijn de melodieuze gitaarsolo's, die duidelijk iets aan het death metalgeweld toevoegen en vaak behoorlijk aan de oude Thantos-demo's doen denken. Als geheel is 'Justified Genocide' een behoorlijk veelzijdige en interessante CD. De mix van Dan Swanö klinkt anders dan je van de Zweedse grootmeester gewend bent, maar blijkt na enkele luisterbeurten wel goed bij de muziek te passen.

Thanatos are a Dutch metal band that's been around since 1984, releasing two albums in the early 90's (Emerging From the Netherlands and Realm of Ecstasy), before breaking up in 1992, only to be revived again in 1999 by founding member/guitarist/vocalist Stephan Gebedi. With a new line-up, the band recorded Angelic Encounters in 2000, which was followed by heavy touring and even more line-up changes. The band seems to have finally settled on bassist Marco de Bruin, guitarist Paul Baayens (from Hail of Bullets & Asphyx), drummer Yuri Rinkel (Melechesh) and Gebedi, who also happens to spend time with Hail of Bullets. Justified Genocide is their brand new CD on Deity Down Records, a brutal concoction of war-themed thrash/death metal. The band's sound is very much old school, so if you love acts like Destruction, Kreator, Vader, Napalm Death, Death, and Sepultura, you've come to the right place. Tracks like "March of the Infidels", "The Devils Triangle", and "Apostles of Damnation" all sound like they came from the era of extreme metal circa 1989-1993, from the vocal style of Gebedi all the way to the riffs and Baayens' wild, whammy bar solos. Original Justified Genocide is not, but there's a certain charm and feeling of nostalgia you'll get while spinning this thing. "The Netherworld" is perhaps the strongest piece here, a nightmarish splatter fest of raging death metal riffs, pounding drums, and rabid growls, straight out of Leprosy era Death. To add further homage to the old days, the band even throws in two covers here, one from Massacre and the other Dark Angel, both given satisfactory treatment. Though Justified Genocide won't completely bowl you over, it's certainly a solid slice of old school death and thrash metal from a band that's been sporadic yet steadfast on the scene for 25 years now.

Het Rotterdamse Thanatos spuwt na 5 jaar maagzuur en verteren weer een volledig album op de markt met de titel 'Justified Genocide'. Het viertal dat ondanks een onderbreking in de jaren negentig onderhand toch al wel 25 jaar bestaat, heeft er een cd bij waar het trots op mag zijn, elf tracks waaronder twee covers sieren deze schijf. De covers zelf zijn prima nummers al denken wij dat een band na 25 jaar ervaring het toch niet nodig zou moeten hebben om dit op een plaat te laten prijken. Ondanks deze opmerking komt het de belevenis ten goede en met die twee covers - 'Dawn Of Eternity' van Massacre en 'The Burning Of Sodom' van Dark Angel - wordt de sfeer die Thanatos brengt even doorbroken. Je moet overigens wel van goede huize komen wil je deze nummers recht doen, maar dat maken deze mannen wel degelijk waar.

Luister je graag naar Napalm Death, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Kreator of Nuclear Assault dan heeft 'Justified Genocide' het allemaal in zich. Het luisteren verveelt niet gauw omdat er een volgroeide mix werd gevonden tussen de snelle trash tempi en het slepend trage van death metal. Met tracks als bijvoorbeeld 'Destruction.Chaos.Creation' en 'Justified Genocide' brengt dit viertal haast epos-achtige ideeën bij je naar boven. 'March Of The Infidels' bevat een hele bizarre break waardoor je denkt dat er een nieuwe song is gestart, niet dus, heel verrassend! Maar uitblinker is toch echt wel 'Apostles Of Damnation'. Wat een geweldige visie heb je als band wanneer je op deze wijze nummers kunt componeren en arrangeren; een prachtig intro, zwaar slepende riffs; de aankondiging van totale verdoemenis is dankzij deze compositie een ervaring op zich. Het eerder op lp uitgebrachte 'And Jesus Wept' is overigens ook terug te vinden op deze productie.

Het gehele album heeft een zeer goed geluid, ook de diverse solo's en de hier en daar aanwezige geluidseffecten ademen echt stuk voor stuk professionaliteit uit. De mix en mastering waren deze keer in goede handen bij de Zweedse producer en multi-instrumentalist Dan Swanö (bekend van werk met Edge Of Sanity, Bloodbath, Mootower, Hail Of Bullets). We mogen spreken van een succesvolle samenwerking en versmelting van wonderlijke krachten, de hoes, het artwork, de teksten, het ziet er allemaal prima uit en er hoeft niemand bedankt te worden ook. Al met al klinkt het gewoon als niets anders dan Thanatos, de groep heeft dus duidelijk een eigen gezicht en 'Justified Genocide' is een sterke plaat!

De laatste pijlen haar op mijn hoofdhuid springen spontaan recht bij het horen van deze nieuwe Thanatosplaat. Dat dit alvast een goed teken is hoef ik jullie niet te vertellen. Wie de essentie van thrash en death wil voelen, tot in de toppen van zijn tenen, doet er goed aan deze schijf eens te beluisteren. Deze pioniers van de Nederlandse underground hebben een meesterlijk en brutaal album uitgekakt. De death / thrashmetalinvloeden, zowel Zweedse als Amerikaans, wisselen elkaar in een razend tempo af en 'Justified Genocide' is een feest voor elke extreme metalfreak!

Thanatos is een Nederlandse metalband die al lang meegaat, een kwarteeuw al als je hun telling volgt. Ontstaan en gegroeid in het wereldwijde demo en tape-trading circuit van midden de jaren tachtig liep het pad van deze band vanaf de jaren negentig langs behoorlijk wat obstakels. 'Justified Genocide' is dan ook slechts hun vierde lp na het debuut 'Emerging from the Netherworlds' uit '90. Dat album en zijn opvolger worden vaak vermeld in 'kennerslijstjes' over morbide thrashmetal of hyperagressieve deathmetal. Zanger/gitarist/bandleider Stephan Gebédi en zijn band snoepen immers (nog) steeds van twee walletjes. Enerzijds zijn er de Duits-Amerikaans aandoende gesyncopeerde thrashriffs, anderzijds is er ontegensprekelijk een invloed van de vroegste deathmetalbands ondermeer in het Scandinavisch klinkende, laaggestemde 'kettingzaag' gitaargeluid, de aggressieve grunt en de geregeld opduikende blastbeats. Typisch voor deze plaat is bovendien de prominente rol van de basgitaar.

Vanaf opener 'They Feed on Fear' zijn een paar dingen duidelijk. De band speelt retestrak, kan meer dan een kunstje en de mix is subliem. Niemand minder dan Dan Swanö (Bloodbath, Edge of Sanity, Nightingale, Diabolical Masquerade, ...) werd ingehuurd om de plaat te mixen en de man heeft waar voor zijn gage geleverd. Het album is luid maar zonder alle meters in het rood te laten schieten zodat ieder instrument goed hoorbaar blijft en de grunt zelfs verstaanbaar. Het geluid is helder en getextureerd maar op een of ander manier blijft er toch een stoffig residu achter van de antieke demostudioklank die de vroegste deathmetal zijn duister sfeertje gaf. Het doet deugd aan de oren om in deze tijd nog eens een deathmetalplaat te horen met een verzorgde en gebalanceerde eindmix. Het is toch een factor die een collectie sterke songs compleet naar de haaien kan helpen, of zoals hier het geval, die extra kracht geven om alle vezels in je lichaam te laten resoneren.

Terug naar het songmateriaal zelf. Alle nummers zijn afwisselend, wat goed is want op de razende storm van heiligschennis 'March of the Infidels' na zijn ze alle behoorlijk lang. Ze durven echter wel eens af te wijken van een klassieke strofe-refrein-strofe-solo opbouw. Da's ook weer een plus want de plaat als geheel neigt naar de 50 minuten en dat is toch lang om een aggresieve spanningsboog vol te houden. Het eerste, hondsbrutale, nummer volgt echter netjes dat klassieke thrashmetalpatroon en is daarom een perfecte opener. Je kan er op meezingen, headbangen en zelfs de luchtgitaar mag al afgestoft want er zit een heuse twin lead in. 'Destruction.Chaos.Creation' vervolgt de debatten eerst met een traag en onheilspellend stuk om dan nog dodelijker en agressiever naar je strot te vliegen. Een verrassend stukje moderne mosh wordt erin gesmokkeld maar dat verdunt geenszins de metalpret want daar is alweer een flitsende solo. De leadgitaristen krijgen trouwens meermaals de gelegenheid om flink uit te halen. Op het titelnummer bijvoorbeeld, figureert ook een solo om duimen en vingers bij af te likken en in 'Apostles of Damnation' wordt de leadpartij aangedikt met ongewoon space-effect. Dat nummer springt er trouwens ook uit omdat het een pak trager is dan de rest en gebruikt maakt van allerlei filmsamples om de boodschap van verdoemenis overtuigend te doen weergalmen. Nog een nummertje dat onder je vel blijft zitten is 'The Netherworld'. Het is een van de langste nummers op de cd maar elke seconde wordt goed benut. Je kan ouderwets headbangen op een klasse metalriff, dan even wat gas terugnemen en later voluit in een hellestorm belanden. Eigenlijk begin ik in herhalingen te vallen: het hele album zit vol met ongeforceerde afwisseling en venijnige riffs. Niet dat alle nummers zulke sterke blijvertjes zijn maar geen enkel werkt me op de zenuwen door een gebrek aan bevlogenheid of een enkel goed idee.

Het venijn zit hem echter niet enkel in de muziek. De teksten van Thanatos zijn ook nogal direct en brutaal, net als de muziek. Traditioneel moeten vooral de georganiseerde godsdiensten het in vurige bewoordingen ontgelden. Daarnaast schieten ze ook met scherp op haat- en angstzaaiende politici en brutale machtsmisbruikers. In het titelnummer wagen ze zich aan een Freudiaans experiment door te schrijven vanuit de (mogelijke) gedachtengang van enkele van de brutaalste genocidairen van de voorbije eeuw met in enkele andere tracks nog speciale aandacht voor de nazi-beulen uit WOII. Voor een doorwinterd luisteraar van dit soort muziek is er niks wereldschokkends aan de hand behalve misschien dan dat ze niets proberen te verbloemen door middel van metaforen. Toch vindt de band het noodzakelijk om bij hun promo een extra blad te stoppen met verklaringen van de teksten, vooral ingegeven door de angst misbegrepen te worden in eigen land. Het tolerante en breeddenkende Nederland van vroeger is de laatste jaren nogal fel afgegleden richting kortzichtigheid. Een extreme metalband met nogal realistische lyrics riskeert dus de wind van voren te krijgen vanuit alle windgaten van het politieke spectrum. Maar een metalhead hoeft zich niet verdedigen tegen zo'n soort gezeik. Mijn raad: geef de volumeknop een duw naar rechts, hef je linkerarm met het hoornengebaar en sloop een denkbeeldige muur van onbegrip met je hoofd!

Thanatos is said to be the first Dutch band ever to perform what we today – and probably more so back in ’84 – think of as extreme metal. If, however, I state this to be an undeniable fact, well, then I’m pretty sure an idiot (or two) will dig up one that collectively overdosed on crack-cocaine in midst of recording their first demo. A band so cult, that H.P. Lovecraft, if still alive, could’ve spun stories around them forever and ever. So I won’t. But before I get on with the actual review, I’d like you to know that them here Dutch bastards visited Greek mythology before naming their ensemble, Thanatos of course being a fucking Wargod.

I’m in love with all Wargods – male, female, shemale, it doesn’t matter, my stiffy is for all – and, even though I know it is futile, I at times close my eyes and beg of them to bring total death and misery upon us. I specifically wish for every member of mankind to be met by a hail of bullets, ASAP, which fluently brings me over to the part of this review making some sort of sense. See, half of the members in Tannkost, that being 2, are to be found in Hail Of Bullets, a fucking excellent death combo if there ever was one. In other words, “Justified genocide” being a fine affair came as no surprise at all.

Speaking about surprises. On this album there is circa none, circa as in none at all, but it doesn’t matter much. Why not, you may wonder, and I’ll of course provide you with the cancer. Simple really, here is 100% dedication, a dedication that results in a satisfying stream of energy, an energy that could very well be labeled deaththrash. So I Scooby Dooby Doo. Fuck you. I’m indeed very tough, but you also need to know that a total lack of what-the-fucks? doesn’t amount to no variation whatsoever. Fucking far from, ya’ goddamned 1/10 wit, for on “Justified genocide” you’ll not only be treated to blasts aplenty, oh no, here is also entire songs belonging in heavyland, and of course also breakdowns into such territories whenever the blasting gets rough. And yeah, both ear-raping and hands down fine solos are a part of the package, too.

Breathe in, breathe out

The main vocals are a mix between black and thrash, a thrashblackshoutsneer, but you’ll also encounter a grunt or two. Literally, that is. I nonetheless approve, the vocals fit the music very much spot on, so I’ll get to the production already. It’s a fucking good one, loud and nasty I dig, and I also dig that it doesn’t sounds like a textbook job ala the 00’s. In fact, it sounds like something out of the 90’s, and I betcha a ponycunt that this was very much intended. Put simple, the dudes in Thanatos isn’t a bunch of confused twats guessing their music into place.

And again

If you like your death mixed up with thrash, a mix in this instance more violent than catchy, then Thanatos could very well turn out to tickle your tickly bits like it did mine.

Hail Thanatos, but also Odin.

Tormentor Erich: Potver, het gaat goed met de vaderlandse metal. Vorige maand werd ik nog compleet omvergeblazen door de nieuwe Dead Head, deze keer is het Thanatos die door de kamer raast en daarbij flink om zich heen hakt.

Het heeft even geduurd (het laatste volledige album van deze Rotterdammers is immers ook alweer van 2004), maar het lange wachten wordt beloond. Okay, nu gebiedt de waarheid mij om te zeggen dat de twee bonus tracks ‘And Jesus Wept‘ en de Dark Angel cover ‘The Burning Of Sodom’ al in 2006 als vinyl single waren uitgebracht en dat men met ‘Dawn Of Eternity’ zelfs een tweede cover heeft opgenomen, deze keer van Massacre. Dus eigenlijk houden we van elf tracks met zevenenveertig minuten speelduur slechts acht echt nieuwe songs over. Maar, beste lezer, het is daarom niet minder genieten hoor. Sterker nog, mede door deze covers wordt nog eens duidelijk hoe dicht thrash en (old school) death metal bij elkaar kunnen liggen, en hoe goed een samensmelting van deze stijlen kan zijn. ‘Justified Genocide’ heeft veel te bieden. Natuurlijk is er het muzikale vakmanschap van de heren zelf (wat wil je met vijfentwintig jaar ervaring en participaties in andere bands zoals Melechesh en Hail Of Bullets), strak, snel, soms ingetogen en heavy en dan weer heel intens, maar altijd beheerst en gecontroleerd, zo moet het. En nu kun je wel goed spelen, maar wat als de songs zelf niet kloppen of niet lekker lopen? Dan heb je een probleem waar Thanatos zich echter geen zorgen over hoeft te maken. De tracks die op ‘Justified Genocide’ terecht zijn gekomen zijn af, gevarieerd en goed te volgen, zonder dat het ook maar dreigt saai te worden. En nu kan ik wel gaan zeggen dat je voor hoge snelheden eens naar ‘Destruction.Chaos.Creation.’ moet luisteren, dat ‘Apostles Of Damnation’ een meeslepende mid tempo death metal track is geworden, dat tijdens ‘The Netherworld’ snel en heavy heel goed worden gecombineerd en dat ik gedurende de titeltrack bij enkele riffs stiekem aan Holy Moses moet denken, maar het beste is eigenlijk dat je maar gelijk dit album ergens op de een of andere manier gaat beluisteren.

O ja, natuurlijk is het de muziek die het doet, maar ik ben tevens ook behoorlijk te spreken over de stem van Stephan op dit album. Het klinkt allemaal net wat gevarieerder en beter dan voorheen. De duidelijke productie (opgenomen in de Excess te Rotterdam, gemixt en gemastered door Dan Swanö in Zweden) en het prima verzorgde artwork maken het geheel verder naar behoren af. Een aanrader!

Tormentor Erich: Damn, things are going well in the Dutch metal scene. Last month I was blown away by the new Dead Head album, and this time it is Thanatos that rages through my living room, creating some serious damage.

It took a while (the last full length album saw the light of day in 2004), but the long waiting is now rewarded. Okay, I have to be honest and mention that the two bonus tracks ‘And Jesus Wept‘ and the Dark Angel cover ‘The Burning Of Sodom’ already were available as a seven inch single in 2006 and with another cover (‘Dawn Of Eternity’, originally by Massacre) there are from eleven tracks only eight real new ones on the album. But does this spoil the fun? No, not at all! I would even like to point out that these covers show again how close thrash and (old school) death metal can be, and how strong a decent mixture of these styles can work out. Because of this combination an album like ‘Justified Genocide’ has got a lot to offer. Of course there are the musical skills from the band members who can look back at almost twenty five years of experiences and participations in other bands like Melechesh and Hail of Bullets. Tight, fast, sometimes more quietly, heavy and very intense, but always in control, as it should be. And I know that performing skills only will not create automatically a good song, therefore some decent song writing is needed, and this is also not a problem for Thanatos. The tracks that made it on ‘Justified Genocide’ are packed with variation, they are well written and never boring. I could tell you now that a song like ‘Destruction.Chaos.Creation.’ is a high speed attack, or that ‘Apostles Of Damnation’ turned out to be a gripping mid tempo death metal song, that during ‘The Netherworld’ fast and heavy are combined in the right way and that I hear some Holy Moses riffs in the title track. But it is better to check all this out for yourselves.

Oh, and of course it is the music that does the trick, but I also have to give credits to the voice of Stephan on ‘Justified Genocide’. He sings with a bit more variety this time, and that gives the songs an extra finishing touch. The good production (recorded in the Excess Studio in Rotterdam and mixed by Dan Swanö in Sweden) and the fine artwork round everything up. This album is my tip of the month!

Le Death Metal en terre batave, c'est un peu comme la choucroute alsacienne ou la fondue suisse. C'est ce qu'on connaît de meilleur et de plus gras qui vient de là-bas. Severe Torture, Nox, Sinister, Pestilence, Melechesh, Textures, Hail Of Bullets, Asphyx... La liste de grands noms Hollandais est longue et ne semble pas vouloir s'arrêter de sitôt... La leçon d'aujourd'hui porte sur le plus vieux d'entre eux, le grand méchant Thanatos, apparemment premier groupe à pratiquer une musique aussi extrême dans ces contrées aux tulipes et moulins si célèbres. Après avoir commencé ses exactions il y a quinze longues années, avoir essuyé de nombreux changements de line-up et un split de huit longues années, la formation de metal de la mort hollandaise reprend du service en 2000. Neuf ans et deux albums plus tard, quel intérêt musical revêt Thanatos?

Vous vous souvenez probablement de ce « Undead, Unholy, Undivine » sorti en 2004, probablement la preuve que Thanatos ne s'était pas reformé quatre ans avant juste pour frimer. La bande de Stephan Gebédi avait pris le temps de digérer avec sagesse ses influences Morbid Angel, Sodom et Possessed et l'album regorgeait de riffs carrés que ne renieraient pas la paire Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman... Or, la galette en question, quoique très honnête, n'était pas aussi efficace que celles des monstres sacrés qui lui servaient de références. Thanatos retente ici l'expérience avec « Justified Genocide ».

D'entrée plus incisif que son prédécesseur, l'album attaque par un « They Feed On Fear » agressif et mélodique à la fois. Pas de doute, on sent directement que la recette Thanatos fait toujours mouche: méchanceté des blastbeats death metal, agressivité « brut de décoffrage » thrash metal, le tout conduit par la voix arrachée de Gebédi qui nous rappellerait presque un certain Martin Van Drunen de Pestilence... Le mix est très honorable et chaque instrument est parfaitement à sa place. Sous cette déferlante, les tempi alternent cependant, notamment avec le titre éponyme, tournant mid-tempo de l'album avec son solo thrash des familles pour embrayer directement sur « The Netherworld ». Si ce n'est pas déjà fait par les premières pistes, elle vous mettra d'ailleurs une bonne calotte là où ça fait mal.

Rappelons encore qu'on n'a aucunement affaire à des amateurs: les musiciens étant tous impliqués dans d'autres formations (Melechesh, Asphyx et Hail Of Bullets pour ne citer qu'eux), leur expérience va sans dire. Le thème de prédilection de ces messieurs n'a par ailleurs pas beaucoup changé, rassurez-vous, ils détestent toujours autant la religion et ses dérives extrémistes. L'agressive « March Of The Infidels » et la très martiale « Apostles Of Damnation » en attestent. Musicalement, on entend encore les vieux fantômes thrash/death du passé sans jouer au cover-band. Des influences plus récentes se décèlent au détour d'un riff, notamment Vader, et ce mélange colle admirablement bien aux Hollandais.

En définitive, Tahanatos rend un album de ce qu'il sait faire le mieux: du neuf avec du vieux. Alors que « Justified Genocide » fleure bon le vieux thrash eighties et le death old-school (en attestent les reprises de Dark Angel et Massacre), il honore parfaitement son contrat grâce à un son résolument actuel et puissant. Ce cd, sans être un futur incontournable, permet de passer un très bon moment et même si on a parfois tendance à l'oublier, c'est le principal.

Already the name of the fifth Thanatos record „Justified Genocide“ is delicate. The new record of the band from the Netherlands deals with criticism of regimes. They portrait the mixed thoughts of fascism with focus on the Third Reich.

These topics expect you while listening to teh record, wrapped in Thrash-/ and Death Metal. Regarding their musical influences you soon see parallels with Slayer and Sepultura which whom the guys could already share the stage in their 25(!!!) years of band experience.

The sound needs no words of criticism, but the pervertive fascination regarding the thoughts of a superior race and the occultism of the Third Reich are quite disturbing. Where ends the criticism and on which point does a pseudo intellectual exploitation take place.

What stays beneath convincing sound is a sick feeling in the stomach.

Neljännesvuosisata on pitkä ikä mille vain bändille, raskaammasta metallimusiikista nyt puhumattakaan. Hollantilainen Thanatos kuuluu näihin pitkän historian omaaviin veteraaneihin, vaikka ura ei olekaan väliaikaisilta hajoamisilta välttynyt. Viides täyspitkä levytys, Justified Genocide pyrkii palauttamaan bändin elossa olevien kirjoihin vuosien tauon jälkeen.

Tyylinsä puolesta JG:n tarjoilema death/thrash metal on kuin sekoitus uutta ja vanhaa. Bändin musiikki ei kuulosta varsinaisesti modernilta, vaan siinä tuoksahtaa vanhojen tekijöiden ikän kokemus ja näkemys, mutta lopputulos kuulostaa kuin se olisi ajettu 2000-luvun suodattimen läpi. Pääosin aggressiivinen ja kiivastempoinen tykitys on varsin toimivaa kamaa, mutta mitään erityistä tai mieleenpainuvaa se ei kappalerintamalla tarjoa. Lopputuloksen suurin - ja ironisin - ongelma onkin juuri siinä, että Thanatosin mäiske on liian deathmetalmaista ollakseen hyvää thrashia ja toisaalta liian rässimäistä ollakseen hyvää kuoloa.

Toinen kokonaisuutta latistava osatekijä löytyy tuotannon puolelta. Kitaroiden karhea ja säröinen soundi on hieman turhankin puuroista ja röpöistä saadakseen aikaan sellaista hyvää tunnetta, jota parhaista thrash- tai death-levyistä löytyy. Kaikkiaan se kuulostaa hieman keinotekoiselta kompromissilta, ja saman voi todeta myös rumpupatteriston saralla. Laulupuolen mörähtelevät ja ärjyvät vokaalit eivät nekään edusta lajityyppinsä parhaimmistoa.

Sen verran puhtia ja asennetta nelikolla kuitenkin on, että keskitasoisen metallisoinnin yläpuolelle noustaan vaivatta. Vaikka varsinaiset tiukat hitit paketista puuttuvatkin, saa bändi kuitenkin jalan mukaansa polkemaan ja yksittäisistä riffeistä voi löytää paikoin maistuvia ideoita. Julkaisun pari viimeistä biisiä ovat bonus-raitoja aiemmin julkaistulta seiskatuumalta ja löytyypä tarjonnasta oman matskun lisäksi myös pari rässikoverointia.

Thanatos have been raising hell since their formation in 1984 as the first Dutch extreme metal band. Early times' thrashing got death metal beside it soon, which was more than appropriate since Thanatos is "the dæmon personification of Death and Mortality itself" (ref. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanatos). Now, a quarter-century later since their formation, the band release their fifth full length album 'Justified Genocide', five years after the previous album 'Undead. Unholy. Divine.' (2004).

'Justified Genocide' was long time in the making, but it is not at all audible. The band launch into relentless, energy-filled, yet so skilful tornados of torment with 'They Feed on Fire'. The double bass drumming, tearing riffage and guffawing guitar turn into brutal thrashing with some Swedish-style riffing and throat lacerating vocals and fine slow breaks with memorable guitar soloing. The band show that they still know how to build up interesting old school metal. 'Destruction.Chaos.Creation.' is a slithering piece with some faster parts to keep up the pulse, plus a Testament style riffage afger three-minute mark. 'The Devil's Triangle' sounds like it was from the end of 1980s with its evil, warbling riffing. 'March of the Infidels' hits the speed surge, providing some real blasting attack, but being a rather narrow song. The title track begins slow, but keeps on accelerating into a fine thrasher, and there are some Vader stylings on it. 'The Netherworld' smells Swedish with its barbaric catchiness. 'Dawn of Eternity' is a fine cover of the Massacre classic from their legendary debut album 'From Beyond' (1991). 'Apostles of Damnation' is another slithering trip to hell. 'Upwards Spiritual Evolution' ends the trundle with thrashing the fuck up. Two bonus tracks follow, good re-recording of originally 1992 song '...And Jesus Wept' and truly vicious Dark Angel cover 'The Burning of Sodom' from the 2006 'The Burning of Sodom / ...And Jesus Wept' EP. The lyrics cover such topics as governmental monitoring, Nazis' occult and genocidal toilings, religious barbarity, mass murderers, and they even enter Agent Steel's territory of alien invaders.

The Dan Swanö production also nods toward the old school. I think this was recorded by the band themselves, but mixed by preceptor Swanö. The guitars sound raw indeed with their ripping, massive tone. The drums sound powerful, with some great nuances, eg. cymbal trickery by Yuri Rinkel (aka Xul of Melechesh). The blast beats add a more "modern" (read: not 25 years old!) edge to them. The bass by Marco de Bruin (also lead guitar with Paul Baayens) provides the loud pulse. It still sounds kind of modern too, but definitely not plastic. Maybe the guitars are a bit overwhelmed by the rhythm section at times. The vocals by the leader and guitarist likewise Stephan Gebédi are like the mixture of Chuck Schuldiner (Death) and Dutch mates Martin Van Drunen of Asphyx (also ex-Pestilence and Hail of Bullets among the others). The semblance of this album is good enough, although a tad mild and generic, so do not let it fool you.

Thanatos have kept faithful to the times of their formation. Surely, you should not expect anything novel, it is musicwise vintage all the way. Well, if you've followed the band in the past, you know that they do exactly what they want to do and do it with style. Old school but no old-timer, and thanks to pretty new label Deity Down Records. Keep it alive!

Der Albumtitel des neuen Werks der Niederländer bezieht sich auf die Scheusale des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts und deren Taten bzw. auf den in ihren Augen legitimen Völkermord – Beispiele wären da Hitler, Stalin oder Saddam Hussein. THANATOS gelten seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 1984 als die erste holländische Extrem-Metal-Band, obgleich deren erste Alben ebenso zu dem Kultstatus in Fachkreisen beigetragen haben mögen. 1992 war den erstmal Schluss, bevor sich die Gruppierung im Jahr 1999 reformierte, in dessen Line-Up sich allerdings mit Stephan Gebédi nur noch ein Gründungsmitglied befand. “Justified Genocide“ bezeichnet nun das insgesamt fünfte Album und hält weiter an alten Traditionen fest, möglichst rohen, zerstörerischen Death/Thrash-Metal zu praktizieren.

Letztgenannter Anspruch wurde erneut sehr ansprechend umgesetzt, denn die Stücke pendeln stets zwischen zeitgemäß moderner Produktion und einer tief sitzenden Urgewalt, dessen unbändige Wut THANATOS noch immer sehr gut abzurufen fähig sind. Die in Hochgeschwindigkeit durch die Boxen schmetternden Riffs schrauben dem Hörer ohne Gnade den Schädel vom Rumpf und zerhäckseln diesen anschließend in gerinnenden Blutbrei. Durch das zumeist ziemlich hohe Tempo wirkt die Musik zwischenzeitlich sogar etwas chaotisch, was der Atmosphäre aber keineswegs entgegenwirkt – hier liegt schlicht Aggressivität, Negation und Wut in der Luft.

Wüsste ich es nicht besser, könnte man durchaus auf die Idee kommen, THANATOS auf einer gewissen Ebene mit LEGION OF THE DAMNED zu vergleichen, die ähnlich gewaltorientiert zur Sache gehen. Der Unterschied liegt in meinen Augen allerdings darin, dass THANATOS dennoch etwas ausgeklügelter agieren, hier und da auch mal das Tempo drosseln, Stampfparts oder sogar gefühlvolle Soli einbinden und damit songdienlicher arbeiten, wohingegen bei den holländischen Kameraden oftmals blind gewütet wird. Was allerdings auch hier ein wenig fehlt, sind die ganz großen Momente und Höhepunkte – “Justified Genocide“ wirkt vollkommen aus einem Guss und vermutlich wurde damit die Bandintention exakt erreicht. Die ungehobelt raue Keifstimme, die hier und da auch mal in tiefere Gebiete abtaucht, passt übrigens auch perfekt wie der Arsch in den Eimer.

So haben THANATOS zum fünften Mal einen deftigen Batzen unverblümte Wut und Aggression heraufbeschwört, den sich Death/Thrash-Freunde auf jeden Fall mal einverleiben sollten. Angesichts deren überaus großen Akzeptanz durch die Szene, stehe ich wohl mit der Meinung, THANATOS seien eine gute Version von LEGION OF THE DAMNED ziemlich alleine da, dennoch halte ich diese Aussage auch im Hinblick auf “Justified Genocide“ durchweg für gerechtfertigt.

Das neueste Thanatos-Werk macht endlich wiedermal richtig Laune, bei all dem neumodischen Brrootalo-Krampf, der sonst so auf den Markt geschmissen wird. Und im Gegensatz zu dem, was von den Herren Gebédi und Baayens beim Hail Of Bullets-Erstling „Of frost and war“ (zusammen mit van Eekelen, Warby und van Drunen) zu hören war, ist „Justified genocide“ ein echter Kracher. Thanatos verbinden die Urgewalten von Death und Thrash Metal im Sinne der „Alten Schule“. Das könnte man als Voraussetzung hinnehmen, da Teile des Line-up's ja seit 25 Jahren nichts anderes machen. Selbstverständlich ist es aber trotzdem nicht, daß bis auf den Sound keinerlei Zugeständnisse an die Moderne gemacht werden. Was könnte man schließlich für Verkaufszahlen erreichen. Nein, die Truppe bleibt bei ihrem Leisten und tritt in gewohnter Manier mit scharfen Riffs, Leads, schnellen Rhythmuswechseln, Blasts und garstigen Vocals Arsch. Was soll ich noch sagen? Hier reiht sich ein Killer-Song an den anderen, Thanatos lassen dem Hörer kaum Ruhepausen und der Langeweile keine Chance. Die zwei Kofferlieder (Massacre, Dark Angel) machen das Kraut noch richtig fett. Auch textlich nehmen Thanatos kein Blatt vor den Mund und sagen offen ihre provokante, unbequeme Meinung. „no politics“ hin oder her. Wer jetzt noch behauptet, diese Band sei rechts, der hat sie wirklich nicht mehr alle... „Justified genocide“ ist definitiv ein Highlight diesen Jahres und ist jedem Deathrasher ans Herz gelegt.

Selbstbewusst nennen sich THANATOS auf ihrer Homepage die erste Death Metal Band der Niederlande. Okay, ich muss zugeben, ich kenne ebenfalls keine andere Todestruppe aus dem Flachland, die schon seit 1984 existiert.

Interessanterweise sind die Burschen jedoch nie wirklich über den Underground-Status hinausgekommen. An mangelnder Produktschaffung liegt es vermutlich nicht, da neben einem Haufen Demos und EPs mittlerweile immerhin das fünfte Studioalbum gerade in meinem CD-Player rotiert.

Mit einem zackigen Einstieg in „They Feed On Fear" geht es zwar entgegen der Behauptung, eine Death Metal Band zu sein, ziemlich thrashig los, aber wir wollen nicht kleinlich sein. Außerdem ließe sich diese Einseitigkeit im folgenden „Destruction.Chaos.Creation" gleich widerlegen, wenn die Männer an den Äxten brett-harte Todes-Riffs sich aus der Hüfte eiern.

Während es meistens heiß her geht was die Geschwindigkeit betrifft, und man aufgrund dessen auch einige klassische Thrash-Soli zu hören bekommt, wirken so manche langsame Gitarrenmelodien als willkommener Düsterfaktor. Den Sechssaitern werden auch einige Töne entlockt, die als schräge Geräusche fast als Trademark gelten könnten.

Um Missverständnissen vorzubeugen, die sich bei den Lyrics ergeben könnten, schreiben THANATOS vorsorglich auf ihrer Seite, dass sie keine Nazis wären. Ihre Texte behandeln nur die Genretypischen Inhalte wie morbide Fantasien oder historische Ereignisse, so dass Kritikern gleich der Wind aus den Segeln genommen wird, die es immer wieder versuchen, manchen Truppen der Hartwurstszene Rassismus anzuhängen. Damit will ich nicht bestreiten, dass es leider auch solches Gedankengut in diesen Musikrichtungen gibt, aber THANATOS sind clever und beugen eben gegen unnötige Vorwürfe und Diskussionen vor.

Stephan Gebédi, der sich an der Gitarre und dem Mikrofon betätigt, gibt auch des Öfteren nette Schreie von sich, die durchaus Wiedererkennungswert besitzen, was bei seinen kräftigen Growls und Shoutings nicht immer der Fall ist, was aber seine Leistung nicht wirklich schmälert.

Zur Abwechslung gibt es auch immer wieder sehr groovige Passagen, die Kopfnicker erfreuen dürften und wenn es auch nur eine Kleinigkeit ist: Ich frage mich manchmal, warum Bands aus allen möglichen Ländern manchmal auf Deutsch einzählen, bevor sie richtig loslegen, was hier in „The Netherworld" geschieht (und mir u. a. schon einmal bei TIAMAT aufgefallen ist)?! Den rockigen Riffs tut dies natürlich keinen Abbruch.

Auch wenn es heutzutage schwierig ist, seine eigenen Merkmale in einer Musik-überfluteten Welt durchzusetzen, und dies THANATOS auch nur bedingt gelingt, ist dies nichtsdestotrotz meiner Meinung nach eine klasse Scheibe. Wer DESTRUCTION, BOLT THROWER und KREATOR in einen Sack steckt und kräftig schüttelt, kann sich hier eine leckere Portion holländischer Blutwurst einverleiben.

THANATOS, Schlafes Bruder, der Tod, kommt brachial. Das neueste Werk “JUSTIFIED GENOCIDE“ der seit 1999 reformierten Extrem Metaller schießt volles Programm in die Birne, beisst sich in der Schädeldecke fest und lässt denselben durch den mitgebrachten Schwung 47 Minuten nach schwingen. Lauscht man der Scheibe, so kommt es einem vor als ob Dani Filth himself stellenweise für das Shouting zuständig wäre. Dem ist aber nicht so. Die eindrucksvolle Stimme gehört zu Stefan Gebédi. Das Langhaarmonster brüllt, growlt und schreit sich die Seele aus dem Leib, das es eine wahre Pracht ist. Doch was wäre der Shouter ohne das Drumherum? Genau, ziemlich alleine auf weiter Flur. Deswegen gibt es um ihn herum Paul Baayens, der durch sein bretthartes Riffing bis einfühlsames Gitarrenspiel der ganzen Sache den Schwung gibt. Marco de Bruin am Bass, der für geniales Körperprickeln in den niedrigen Frequenzen sorgt und Yuri Rinkel an den Drums, der stampedemäßig die Jungs mit seinem Drumming im Takt hält und durch die brachialen Sounds scheucht. Inhaltlich rechnet das Album mit all diesen Großkotzen ab die Ihr Volk in Krieg und Untergang führen indem sie Ihre Ängste ausnützen oder einfach nur Machtmissbrauch betreiben. So halten THANATOS nicht nur an ihrem derben Extrem in Sachen Metal fest , sondern auch an den Inhalten für die der Heavy Metal in der Anfangszeit stand, nämlich Kritik an den Idioten die meinen nur weil sie ein bischen Macht haben, gleich den Imperius Rex rauskehren zu müssen um sich selber zu verwirklichen, anstatt das zu tun wofür sie vom Volk gewählt wurden. Aber das ist ja schon immer so, der Mohr hat „gewählt“ er hat seine Schuldigkeit getan.

THANATOS bieten Inhaltlich sowie musikalisch also brettharten und ursprünglichen extrem Metal auf Ihrer Scheibe JUSTIFIED GENOCIDE.

Fazit: Nie war ein Album angebrachter in Zeiten des Pussytextens, Schönfärbens von Heldensagen und fiktiven Killern. Tatsachen auf den Tisch und THANATOS genau zwischen die Augen. Wer mal was anderes wie Legion Of The Damned hören will, sollte hier UNBEDINGT zugreifen!

Famosi per essere la prima band death-thrash metal olandese, i Thanatos si sono formati nel lontano 1984 e malgrado non abbiamo ancora raggiunto la fama che si meriterebbero, vantano di una line up di lusso che vede membri di Hail Of Bullets, Melechesh, Asphyx e Funeral Winds e di una grande esperienza live, i Thanatos hanno infatti condiviso il palco più volte con bands del calibro di Kreator, Sepultura, Death, Bolt Thrower, Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Dying Fetus, Exhumed, Cryptopsy, Vader.. la lista potrebbe continuare all’infinito.

Giunti al loro venticinquesimo anno di attività, sfornano finalmente il loro quinto full length: Justified Genocide, che si candida come migliore lavoro della discografia della band olandese. Registrato all’Excess Studios di Rotterdam (Sinister, Severe Torture, Hail Of Bullets) e mixato da Dan Swanö (Bloodbath, Hail Of Bullets, Edge Of Sanity) il disco è uscito per Deity Down Records , etichetta degli italianissimi Murder Therapy, a cui hanno recentemente arruolato in line up Sean e Samu (chitarrista e batterista dei Chaos Among Nameless).

Chiariamo immediatamente le cose, non siamo di fronte a nessun capolavoro, Justified Genocide altro non è che un buon album di death/thrash metal old school in cui spiccano gioiellini come “ The netherworld” , “Destruction, chaos, creation” e “March of the infedels” che vi faranno ricordare i primissimi anni 90, quando il thrash metal dava i frutti migliori, come per esempio: Souls of Black (1990) dei Testament, Rust in Peace (1990) dei Megadeth, Seasons in the Abyss (1990) degli Slayer, Arise (1991) dei Sepultura o anche Time does not heal dei Dark Angel , di cui tra l’altro i Thanatos fanno la cover di “The Burning Of Sodom”.

25 jaar Thanatos betekent ook 25 jaar death metal in Nederland. Die lange adem alleen al dwingt respect af, al dient natuurlijk wel opgemerkt te worden dat de stekker er tussen '92 en '99 uit lag. Betekent dit dan dat er anno 2009 een stel ouwe lullen een belegen potje rammelmetal staat te spelen? Driewerf neen! 'Justified Genocide' is een uitermate agressieve knoertstrakke death/thrash plaat geworden; sterker nog: Thanatos heeft nog nooit ze goed geklonken.

Wat wel enigszins wrang is dat dit album al sinds 2006 op de plank lag omdat tijdens de opnames het vorige label het lootusje legde. Helaas kon er drie jaar lang geen geschikt label gevonden worden dat het lef had 'Justified Genocide' uit te brengen totdat gelukkig Deity Down Records het aandurfde.

Nu besef ik ook wel dat ik met een nickname als de mijne niet als objectief beschouwd kan worden maar als je zulke goede, pakkende nummers kunt schrijven als They Feed On Fear en The Netherworld en zo vol gas kan geven als in bijvoorbeeld Destruction.Chaos.Creation dan verdien je het nog lang niet om achter de geraniums te gaan zitten. Dan heb je welhaast de plicht de (Nederlandse) metalheads te onderwijzen: luister, zo speel je death metal. Begrepen broekies? En nu opgesodemieterd!

Tekstueel is oprichter/zanger/gitarist Stephan Gebédi met de jaren niet subtieler geworden, bekende onderwerpen als de Tweede Wereldoorlog, fundamentalisme en seriemoordenaars zullen vast ook deze keer wel weer wat tere zieltjes kwetsen. Om antifa gezeik te voorkomen vond men het kennelijk noodzakelijk om bij de promo een tekstvel mee te sturen waarin enige sympathie voor het gedachtengoed van Oompje Adolph ten overvloede tegengesproken wordt. Toch apart dat een band die in 1986 al een anti-Hitler nummer opnam (Rebirth) dit meent te moeten doen.

De ogenschijnlijk lange tracklist van 11 nummers verdient wel enige nuancering omdat deze 1 heropgenomen nummer en 2 covers bevat. Het gereïncarneerde oudje is And Jesus Wept van het tweede album 'Realm Of Ecstacy' uit 1992 en de covers zijn respectievelijk Dawn Of Eternity van Massacre en The Burning Of Sodom van Dark Angel. Maak niet de fout om dit als vullertjes te zien want beide tracks passen perfect bij de rest van het album en laten juist mooi zien dat het niet zoveel uitmaakt of Thanatos naar death of naar thrash metal neigt, het beukt toch wel. Het mixen en masteren werd door Dan Swanö en dan weet je het wel: het geluid is lomp, zwaar en goed.

'Justified Genocide' is verplichte kost voor elke thrash en death liefhebber. Hopelijk hoeft het geduld van deze liefhebbers niet weer 5 jaar op de proef gesteld te worden want 'Justified Genocide' laat horen dat Thanatos nog steeds er toe doet, wellicht meer dan ooit.

Thanatos...an illustrious name that has been haunting the Underground Metal scene since 1984.. Im the proud owner of an original copy of their first demo 'Speed Kills'! After several demo tapes and line-up changes, Thanatos released two classic Thrash/Death Metal albums in the early 1990's: 'Emerging From The Netherworlds' (Shark Records/Cargo 1990) and 'Realm Of Ecstasy'( Shark Records/Cargo 1992). In 1992 Thanatos split up due to a variety of reasons but was revived in 1999 by founding member Stephan Gebédi, featuring a new line-up that included members from Sinister, Houwitser and Cremation. The third Thanatos album, 'Angelic Encounters', was released in 2000 by Hammerheart Records, followed by even more live shows.

In 2002 the band recorded four new songs and two covers in a small 8-track studio to attract some interest from record companies. Baphomet Records/Red Stream released these recordings as the 'Beyond Terror' Mini CD. Thanatos signed a recording deal with Greek label Black Lotus Records in 2003, resulting in the release of 'Undead.Unholy.Divine.' the next year (see Archive CD/DVD reviews). While recording their fifth full-length 'Justified Genocide' the band was informed of Black Lotus Records' bankruptcy and the album was put on hold.

In 2009, a quarter of a century after the band's first incarnation, 'Justified Genocide' finally is released by a partner closer to home. The quartet signed a deal with Holland based Deity Down Records. 'Justified Genocide' was recorded at Excess Studio in Rotterdam, Netherlands and mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö (Edge Of Sanity, Bloodbath, Moontower) at Unisound Studio in Sweden.

This is the bands 5th album in their 25th year celebration and this is again a damn good one! Musically I always named bandleader Stephan Gebedy the 'Dutch Chuck Schuldiner' especially because they nearly started at the same period and their music was very comparable in the first years of both bands. When Death changed their music into a more technical direction; Thanatos stayed true to their roots. The band still plays a mix of (old) Death and (old) Kreator. This album sounds extremely aggressive and it was a good choice from Deity Down Records to release this album! This is a must have for all old-school thrashers/deathmetallers! The CD contains 2 bonus tracks: 'And Jesus Wept' (released on vinyl in 2006) and 'The Burning of Sodom' (originally from Dark Angel).

Enésimo retorno de los death/thrashers holandeses, ¿o acaso alguna vez se fueron?, con este ya su quinto álbum de estudio, "Justified Genocide", y con el que además celebran su 25 aniversario... la verdad es que a esta gente les tenía perdida la pista desde hacía bastante tiempo, me resultó tan vergonzosa la forma en como Hammerheart Records intentó vendérnoslo en su día, ¡¡prácticamente como el retorno de la mejor banda de los noventa!!, que decidí dejarlos olvidados en la memoria... recordemos que ficharon con el sello holandés cuando se reformaron por primera vez, allá por el año 2000, y a parte de editarles su tercer álbum, del que curiosamente la propia banda no quedó nada satisfecha, reeditaron, ¡¡cómo no!!, sus dos primeros trabajos como auténticas joyas, cuando la realidad era que, aún siendo una buena banda y buenos discos, el nivel de aquella época en los países escandinavos, o incluso en la mismísima Holanda, era tan elevado que hacía que esta gente jugase en segunda o tercera división...

Y aunque siguieron más o menos en activo editando un cuarto álbum por Black Lotus Records y algunas cosas más, no ha sido hasta ahora que Deity Down Records los ha fichado y ha tenido a bien enviarnos una promo cuando les he dado una segunda oportunidad... y joder, la verdad es que esta vez no me han defraudado, "Justified Genocide" es de lejos su mejor obra hasta la fecha, continúan prácticamente en la misma línea musical de antaño, thrash metal realmente cañero de corte tradicional muy influenciado por el death metal de toda la vida y con unos solos que firmaría el mismísimo James Murphy... no obstante, aunque no sé muy bien porqué, los temas me suenan frescos y actuales, excesivamente actuales diría yo, quizá producto de una producción muy de hoy en día, fantástica por otro lado, pero excesivamente limpia y moderna para el tipo de música que practican los holandeses...

Musicalmente el disco es una auténtica bomba a todos los niveles, el trabajo de ambos guitarras es buenísimo, complementándose de forma perfecta en todos y cada uno de los temas con unos riffs fantásticos ejecutados de manera prodigiosa, no en vano tanto Paul Baayens como Stephan Gebédi, único miembro de la formación original de la banda, tocan también en Hail Of Bullets, y eso se nota en el acoplamiento tan brutal que han conseguido, sin embargo el que más me ha impresionado ha sido el batería Yuri Rinkel, también miembro de Meleches, rapidísimo y con una precisión increíble... la velocidad de la mayoría de los temas es endiablada, pero nunca dan la sensación de perder el control, todo lo contrario, el nivel de estos cuatro músicos es simplemente increíble, y las partes más lentas, de corte death metal a medio tiempo, siempre muy contenidas para no dar sensación de pérdida de potencia, son espectaculares, fusionándose de forma magistral con el resto y dando al disco una variedad musical realmente interesante...

Resumiendo, como podéis ver, son pocas las objeciones que se le pueden poner a este disco, no obstante las sensaciones que me ha dejado no son totalmente positivas... quizá carezca de lo que siempre ha escaseado en esta banda, falta de originalidad, Thanatos han ido siempre a remolque de otras bandas y, aún 25 años después de su fundación, siguen sin tener un sonido totalmente propio... “Justified Genocide” es un buen disco, un muy buen disco, pero no deja poso... por otro lado te queda la sensación de que es el típico producto que simplemente por el nombre y la calidad de la gente que lleva dentro se sabe a ciencia cierta que va a funcionar... en definitiva, un álbum sin demasiadas pretensiones hecho “simplemente” para disfrutar a tope de casi una hora de death/thrash de muchísimos quilates...

Met het succes van Hail Of Bullets zou het best kunnen dat Thanatos misschien even in de koelkast gezet wordt. Aan Paul Baayens en Stephan Gebédi, onder anderen, om dat te beslissen. Samen met Marco de Bruin en Yuri Rinkel (Melechesh) hebben ze alleszins onder de titel 'Justified Genocide' een prima Thanatos-album geschreven. Ik zou zelfs zeggen: het beste werk totnogtoe. "Destruction.Chaos.Creation.", "March Of The Infidels" en het titelnummer tonen Thanatos op zijn best. De brute death metal is 'modern' noch gelikt, maar roept eerder herinneringen aan oudere goden op (Morbid Angel bijvoorbeeld) en laat af en toe ook wat ruimte voor stevige thrash en heavy metal. Als bonus krijgen we twee goede covers (Massacre's "Dawn Of Eternity" en Dark Angel's "The Burning Of Sodom") en een extra nummer "And Jesus Wept". Die twee laatste waren tot nu toe enkel terug te vinden op plaat (2006).

Nach einer unverschuldeten Zwangspause kredenzen uns die Niederländer THANATOS zum 25jährigen Jubiläum der Bandgründung, endlich ihr bereits vor einigen Jahren eingetrümmertes Werk "Justified Genocide”.

THANATOS zählen mit zu den Urvätern der niederländischen Brachial-Metal-Bewegung, wurden bereits 1984 gegründet und haben in den Jahren bis zur vorübergehenden Auflösung 1992 nicht weniger als sechs Demo-Tapes, zwei Alben und ein Live-Dokument auf der Haben-Seite verbuchen können. Ein überaus imposanter Backkatalog, der den Niederländern allerdings dennoch nicht viel mehr als gehobenen Underground-Status einbringen konnte. Eine kleine, aber dafür getreue Fanbase konnte sich die Truppe damit aber fraglos erspielen, sodass der Name THANATOS auch nicht so schnell wieder in Vergessenheit zu geraten drohte.

Gegen Ende des letzten Jahrtausends gab es für die Fangemeinde schließlich sogar reichlich Grund zum Jubeln, denn Gitarrist und Sänger Stephan Gebédi verspürte erneut das dringende Bedürfnis, THANATOS erneut zum Leben zu erwecken und es mit dieser Band nochmals zu versuchen. Mittlerweile ist er das einzig verbliebene Gründungsmitglied, hält allerdings stilistisch sehr wohl am ursprünglich eingeschlagenen Weg fest und kredenzt auch auf dem aktuellen Dreher "Justified Genocide" eine gewaltige Dosis satten Thrash Metal der brachialen Art in Kombination mit nicht minder brutalem Death Metal.

Nach der erneuten Wiederbelebung des Unternehmens konnten die Niederländer beim damals recht aktiven griechischen Label Black Lotus Records unterkommen und an sich hätte diese Liaison vorliegendes Album auch schon vor längerer Zeit in Umlauf bringen sollen, doch der plötzliche Bankrott der Plattenfirma zwang die Band dazu die Aufnahmen quasi einzufrieren, so dass wir uns erst jetzt - anlässlich das 25. Wiegenfestes der Band - an diesem Album ergötzen dürfen. Allerdings merkt man "Justified Genocide" zu keinem Zeitpunkt eventuell anlagerten Staub an, wie man ebenso auch vernehmen kann, dass sich Stephan nebst runderneuerter Mannschaft einen feuchten Kehricht um eventuell angesagte Versionen von Metal geschert hat und uns stattdessen ein amtliches, knietief in der alten Schule fundamentiertes Album voll grobschlächtigem Thrash Metal kredenzt. Zwar kommen hinsichtlich des Riffings und der Spieltechnik sehr wohl auch jene Zeitgenossen auf ihre Rechnung, die sich ansonsten weniger an Derbheiten ergötzen können, musikalische Feinmechanik klingt aber dennoch definitiv anders.

Auf Grund der Thematik ihres aktuellen Werkes, auf dem unterschiedlichste Gräueltaten des 20. Jahrhunderts abgehandelt werden, kommen mir spontan HAIL OF BULLETS in den Sinn, auch wenn sich THANATOS nicht ganz so spezialisiert präsentieren und das Thema allgemeiner gestalten, ihr Unterfangen im Endeffekt aber dennoch auf ähnliche Weise präsentieren. Dazu muss erwähnt werden, dass nicht nur Stephan selbst, sondern auch Paul Baayens, sein Mitstreiter an der Klampfe, auch in Diensten der genannten Landsmänner stehen, wodurch Anknüpfungspunkte zu HAIL OF BULLETS nur noch schwer von der Hand zu weisen sind, auch wenn THANATOS sich im Endeffekt deutlich früher mit der Thematik befasst hatten.

Musikalisch dagegen bestehen keinerlei Verbindungen. Auf "Justified Genocide" wird zumeist im hohen Tempo-Bereich losgelegt, doch die Herrschaften von THANATOS wissen sehr wohl auch durch fette Mid-Tempo-Grooves und sogar vereinzelte eingestreute Stampfer Druck zu erzeugen und zudem auch für Abwechslung zu sorgen, auch wenn die Basis zu jeder Sekunde zu vernehmen ist.

Als ob ihre Eigenkompositionen nicht schon für ausreichend Freude innerhalb ihrer Klientel sorgen würden, bekommen die Zuhörer auch noch amtlich drückende Coverversionen von 'Dawn Of Eternity' (MASSACRE) und 'The Burning Of Sodom' (DARK ANGEL) vor den Latz geknallt, mit denen THANATOS nicht nur Geschmack beweisen, sondern auf Grund der tadellosen Umsetzung auch spieltechnische Kompetenz.

Letztgenannter Hammer aus dem Vermächtnis der Amis ist zwar (zusammen mit dem "Band-Oldie" 'And Jesus Wept') bereits im Jahr 2006 auf einer Vinyl-EP veröffentlicht worden, aus den erwähnten "Aktualitätsgründen" wurden beide Tracks allerdings auch als Bonus-Material auf dem aktuellen Silberling verewigt. Feine Sache!

Ein geradezu Vorzügliches Thrash/Death Metal Geschoss legen uns die Niederländer Thanatos da mit dem Album Justified Genocide vor. Justified Genocide kommt mit elf Schädelspaltern daher, die genug Power haben auch neben Genre Schwergewichten wie Slayer oder Testament zu bestehen.

Die Thrash Songs werden allesamt rasend schnell durch den Gehörgang geprügelt. Ein besonders rasantes Tempo legt dabei Schlagzeuger Yuri Rinkel vor, mit seinem sehr schnellen und präzisen Schlagzeugspiel treibt er die anderen Bandmitglieder zu Höchstleistungen an.

Trotz aller Brutalität vergisst die Band nie, sehr melodische Gitarrensoli in die Songs mit einzubauen. Alle Songs liegen auf dem gleichen hohen Niveau, daher möchte ich hier auch keine einzelnen Lieder herausheben. Fans von Slayer und Legion Of The Damned werden ihre helle Freude an Justified Genocide.

Ein paar Worte müssen wir noch über die Texte verlieren. Thanatos schrecken nicht davor zurück auch heikle Themen in den Lyrics zu behandeln. Die Band singt darüber das die Politik, die Angst der Bevölkerung vor Krieg und Terror ausnutzt um Bürgerrechte einzuschränken (“They Feed On Fear“), über religiöse Fundamentalisten die es in jeder Religion gibt (“March Of The Infidels“) und über Okkultismus im dritten Reich (“The Devil’s Triangle“).

Die Themenauswahl hat wohl dazu geführt, dass die Band von einigen Leuten in die braune Ecke einsortiert worden ist. Nun, da muss man die Texte von Thanatos wohl deftig fehlinterpretiert haben, denn vom braunen Sumpf ist die Band mit Sicherheit meilenweit entfernt. Stephan Gebédi en zijn kompanen zitten tegenwoordig niet stil en bestoken de metal underground sinds hun wederopstanding met nieuwe releases. 'Justified Genocide' - hun vijfde album - is in ieder geval een plaat waar ze trots op mogen zijn en waar wellicht voor het eerst in hun carriere alle factoren helemaal in de juiste plooi vallen. Daar is het desolate artwork er dat knap uitziet en goed de sfeer van de plaat weergeeft, het geluid is perfect (de mix lag in handen van Dan Swanö) en knalt zoals het moet, en de nummers zelf staan als een huis. Thanatos heeft eigenlijk een volkomen uniek geluid, hun invloeden zitten duidelijk diep geworteld in de jaren tachtig maar ze doen er wel hun eigen ding mee. Het tempo ligt extreem hoog maar gelukkig weten ze dit ook af en toe af te wisselen met zeer dreigende en slepende passages. Dit resulteert in tracks zoals de opener 'They Feed On Fear' (absoluut een van de hoogtepunten), 'March Of The Infidels' (met krankzinnige gitaarpassages), 'Apostles Of Damnation' (doet wat aan het trage werk van Morbid Angel denken) en een geslaagde cover van Massacre's 'Dawn Of Eternity'. Ook op tekstueel vlak (o.a. godsdienstwaanzin en feiten uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog) heeft Thanatos op dit album heel wat interessants te vertelln. Als bonus krijg je er nog een herbewerking van het oudje 'And Jesus Wept' en een cover van Dark Angel's 'The Burning Of Sodom' er bovenop. Een (h)eerlijke plaat!

The beginning of Thanatos’ history goes back to 1984! As one of the very first Death Metal bands in Holland, the band gained a certain popularity within the underworlds, and the albums Emerging From The Netherworlds (1990) and Realm Of Ecstasy (1992) (both on Shark Records / Cargo) can be considered ‘classics’. The band performed live with bands as Autopsy, Kreator, Bolt Thrower, Death, Napalm Death and Sepultura, but in 1992 the band unfortunately decided to split.

In 1999, founding member Stephan Gebédi (also in Hail Of Bullets and Legion (the Dutch one), and former member of Church Of Indulgence) wanted to reform the band, and 2000 saw the light of Angelic Encounters (Hammerheart Records). That album was a killer, as if the band had never disappeared. The same goes for the following recordings, and again for this newest album, Justified Genocide. Stephan (g, v) and his horde (still the same line-up as on the latest releases), Yuri Rinkel (d; from Melechesh / Funeral Winds / Inferi / Lier In Wait / Liar Of Golgotha -fame), Marco de Bruin (b; Liar In Wait, Funeral Winds, Abode Of The Blessed) and Paul Baayens (g; Hail Of Bullets, Asphyx, ex-Cremation), entered the famous Dutch Excess Studio (Hatred, Gorefest, Arsebreed, Severe Torture, Brutus amongst others) again. For the mix and mastering, the band worked with Dan Swanö at his Unisound Studio (Misery Speaks, Demiurg, Opeth, Aeon etc).

Justified Genocide (forty seven minutes of playing time) isn’t that renewing, but it brings those superior hymns we’re used to: firm, melodic and overwhelming Death / Thrash explosions with an old school edge, created by sublime performers! Even though the members aren’t that young anymore (all of them have their extreme Metal-roots back in the eighties), they play with a refreshing yet unstoppable fury and energy. The rhythmic and groovy-technical compositions still contain the necessary entertaining elements in instrumentation (their experience is evident) and vocal presence (deep thrashy death grunts), in tempo (varying from pretty slow over mid-tempo to lightning fast) and in atmosphere (apocalyptic, war-lusting, morbid). The lyrics deal with the dark, destructive side of mankind, but there’s no national-socialist on nazistic ideology behind it, to avoid any confusion or misinterpretation. Oh yes, the album comes with two bonus tracks, taken from the 2006-7” single And Jesus Wept (with the Dark Angel-cover The Burning Of Sodom).

"Kein Rumgesülze!"

Schluss mit Fantasy-Gebolze, Liedern über Beziehungsdramen oder sonstigem Rumgesülze. Die aus den Niederlanden stammende Band THANATOS beschäftigt sich auf ihrem neuen Album „Justified Genocide“ mit den brutalen Geschehnissen des zwanzigstens Jahrhunderts. Saddam Hussein, Stalin oder Hitler tauchen da als Figuren ebenso auf wie die Jünger des religiösen Fanatismus. Ein Spiegelbild der dunklen Seite unserer Gesellschaft, verpackt in brutalen Death/Thrash-Metal.

Das Tempo auf dem Album ist angesichts der schweren Themen, mit denen sich Sänger Gebédi beschäftigt, überraschend hoch auf der kompletten Scheibe. Nur selten wird mal kurzzeitig auf die Bremse getreten, nur um kurz darauf wieder ein Feuerwerk an Gitarrensoli hinzulegen, verbunden mit fettem Power-Drumming. Gelegentlich groovt die Band auch mal ganz kurz und lädt regelrecht zum entspannten Bangen ein. Dennoch: rohe Aggressivität liegt ständig in der Luft, wenn die Jungs loslegen wie die Feuerwehr. KREATOR-Klänge treffen hier auf frühe SLAYER und BOLT THROWER, so könnte man den Sound der Truppe wohl am ehesten umschreiben. Nichts für Weicheier, hier geht es roh und blutig zur Sache.

THANATOS haben vorgesorgt und ein Statement zu ihren Texten auf ihrer Homepage online gestellt, in welchem sie sich von jeglichem rechtsradikalen Gedankengut distanzieren. Das scheint notwendig, da eine Band schnell in diesen Topf geworfen wird, wenn Begriffe wie „Untermensch“ oder „Vernichtung durch Arbeit“ in den Texten verarbeitet werden. Diskussionen darüber erübrigen sich also glücklicherweise. Anspieltipps sollten das nach vorne galoppierende „March Of The Infidels“ und das schwergewichtige „Justified Genocide“ sein.

In a last couple of years metal scene got back quite a few excellent bands that just disappeared or decided to call it quits years back for whatever reasons. Now they've come back to kick some ass again. Thanatos is one of them and after listening to "Justified Genocide" I must say that I welcome the boys back with my arms wide open.

Last time I've heard Thanatos (if I remember correctly!) I've listened to "Realms Of Ecstasy" somewhere back around 1992/93. I know that there are albums that the band recorded and put out between now and then but I didn't have the chance to listen to any of them. I remember that back in 1992 Thanatos created quite a stir in the scene playing mixture of Death and Thrash Metal and doing it mighty well. "Realms Of Ecstasy" was one of my favorite albums back then so when I got their newest album "Justified Genocide" I expected some good 'ol ass whooping. New album tends to be more old school, straightforward, neck breaking, ass kicking Thrash Metal instead of Death Thrash but let me tell you something: this is the best Thrash I've heard in a long while and I can only compare it to the best out there!!!! I honestly cannot believe that music that I find on this disc was shelved for so long and no one had enough brains to put it out. All songs on this release are instant classics in the genre and are milestones not only in Thanatos discography but in all Thrash music.

What really amazes me about the album the most is the fact that all compositions are so different from each other but yet are completing one another. All easily recognizable either by awesome solo or guitar melody, unique riff or scream along chorus. All superbly crafted and recorded with wicked lyrics and all around energy. Whole album boils with ideas, riffs, innovation and dynamics. It all seems effortless and enthusiastic but at the same time angry, furious and brutal. Recording and production play a huge role here being simply exquisite and mix and mastering are done by Dan Swano, which speaks for itself. I could try and talk about guitars, drums, vocal lines and such but no words can describe what's being delivered through my speakers. "Justified Genocide" needs to be heard and needs to be listened loud. I cannot skip mentioning of very original album cover done by bass player Marco De Bruin. This something that really enhances the whole listening experience. It's an artwork that visualizes and brings to life some of the topics that are screamed, barked and/or growled by Stephan Gebedi throughout the album. It's an artwork that definitely pushes the imagination towards dark, depression and sadness. Another thing that I have to mention is addition of two re-recorded songs ('And Jesus Wept' and cover of Dark Angel 'The Burning Of Sodom') that are from 2006 7" record and are almost beyond reach anywhere. I' am almost positive that they sound better than originals!! There's also cover of Massacre's 'Dawn Of Eternity' that adds an extra kick in the face just in case some of us would still be standing.

"Justified Genocide" is right now on top of my play list and seems like it will stay there for a while. I highly recommend this album to any and all metalheads that still enjoy good 'ol honest Thrash Metal and have enough heart and courage to do some serious headbanging. When I think about the album I think it should come with a warning: There are 12 songs on the album- stretch before going nuts and headbang carefully!!

Nos a holland death-thrash királyokat különösebben azt hiszem nem kell bemutatnom, azért dióhéjban a dolog úgy áll, hogy a Thanatos 1984-ben alakult Rotterdamban, a csapat pedig egy valag demó, egy koncert korong és két nagylemez után 92-ben feloszlott, majd Stephan Gebedi, aki a 6 húrost ugyanúgy préselte, mint hangját s mellesleg a neve ismerős lehet egy személyes kedvencből a Hail Of Bullets-ből, na szóval úgy döntött 99-ben, hogy újra alakítja a Thanatos-t, s egy teljesen új legénységgel vág neki a istentelen útjának… így 2000 óta ez a harmadik nagylemez, melyet pár kislemez is kiegészített. A borítóért a basszeros Marco De Bruin a felelős, aki szép munkát végzett (bár már láttam szebb Thanatos fedőt is), de a koncepció a bookleten belül már elég vérszegény és a korong is mondhatni csúnya. Amúgy ez a neo-futurista fikció apokalipszis kép hangulatában tökéletesen kifejezi azt a rombolást, ami a lemezen vár. A hangzás izmos, és a Deity Down Records is piros pontot érdemel (bár mindig is korrekt kiadó volt és igényes termékkel foglalkozott, még ha nem is nagyipari mennyiségben), hiszen bontatlanul kaptam a CD-t, s nem annyira anyagias, mint mondjuk a jóval pénzesebb és nagyobb bandákat malma alá hajtó Relapse (a Brutal Truth-nál linkeltem mit is kaptam kézhez, katt ide - haha…). Lássuk mi is fogad a rombolás paradicsomában!

A bevezetőbe írt thrash-death királyok relatíve teljesen valóságos kijelentés volt, még bele se hallgattam és már tudtam előre, profi és erős anyag szakad majd a nyakamba, egy dologban kételkedtem csak, ez pedig a komplex játék mellett érvényesülő egyediség kérdése, korábban ezzel semmi gond sem volt, most nem ennyire egyértelmű a helyzet. Vegyük csak a témák egy része ismerős lehet az Asphyx-ból (na jó, a gitáros Paul Baayens, aki többek között felelős az újabb Asphyx anyagokért és a Hail Of Bullets-ben is aprít.), itt-ott feltűnik a korai Slayer is és a Massacre feldolgozás se annyira véletlen (az amúgy a 91-es remekműről a From Beyond-ról került elő, a felemás Promise után pedig szépen földbe állt a floridai Massacre). Ettől a némi fertőzés kényszertől függetlenül az idei Thanatos se lóg ki az eddigiek közül, rákerült bonusz gyanánt a 2006-os EP-jük, melyből az egyik egy korai Dark Angel dal feldolgozása – 86-os Darkness Descends-ről – szépen újra fényezték, s közben korhűnek is hat. A dalok többségében amúgy a jelen komplex thrash-deathje ad randevút az old school Protector, Destruction, Sodom, Bolt Thrower, Devastation és Kreator féle halmaznak illetve megjenik itt-ott a korai Sinister, Death és Morbid Angel death kombója... s lehet egyesek nem értenek majd velem egyet, de az újabb féle Behemoth témákat sem zárnám ki! Szép szólókat, nyakatekert matekozást és belassult cammogást egyaránt kapunk, így tehát akik vevők a csapkodó halál fémre, azoknál ez az új is betalál. Bár a sok modernség és technikázás ellenére (bár akadnak nagyon puritán részek is) mégsem szárnyalja túl mondjuk a Realm of Ecstacy-t.

Bárkinek ajánlatos a beszerzése, hiszen a súlyos témák ellenére azért akadnak progresszív elrugaszkodások is az igényes és változatos szólókból kifolyólag, döngölő szaggatás, brutális gyorsulások, zakatolások és energikus kiállások avagy ez az újraalakulás nem szánalmas csemetéket szül a reflektorok fényei és a siker újraízlelése végett. Izmos és bámulatos anyaggal lettünk gazdagabbak, vérprofi tálalásban, elenyésző szépséghibákkal!

Scheint so, als ob zumindest an Teilen der Weltweiten Thrashgemeinde der Name THANATOS spurlos vorübergegangen wäre, zumal an jüngeren Enthusiasten. Seit 1984 treibt die Band ihr Unwesen und hat zu Beginn der 90er Jahre zwei Alben entwickelt, die wohl nur im Untergrund für viel Wirbel gesorgt haben. Unkraut vergeht bekanntlich nicht und so werkelten THANATOS munter weiter. Anno 2009 nun als ein neues Album, das furios beginnt, in etwa so, wie man es von einem brutalen Thrash-Album erwarten würde. Wer jetzt meint, hier plünderte man schlicht in der "Früher war alles besser"-Kiste, der sieht sich getäuscht. Natürlich gibt es Anklänge an selige BayArea-Zeiten, aber THANATOS haben die stattgefundenen Entwicklungen nicht verpennt und integrieren mühelos modernere Einflüsse. Die Basis bildet dabei natürlich immer Thrash, in seiner brutalen Ausführung. Man bemerkt recht schnell es hier nicht mit Amateuren zu tun zu haben, denn ein Track nach dem anderen ballert gnadenlos drauflos, was nicht zuletzt an den Künsten von Altmeister und Knöpfchendreher Dan Swäno liegen dürfte. Ein gelungener Spagat zwischen Tradition und Moderne, zwischen Thrash und Death Metal mit hartem Death Metal - Einschlag.

Die Holländischen Death Thrasher Thanatos dümpeln nunmehr schon seit 25 Jahren durch den Underground. Der große Erfolg ist ihnen dabei nicht beschieden gewesen. Wohl auch deswegen gabs 1992 den Split, bevor Schreihals Stephan Gebedi die Band 1999 reformierte. Zehn Jahre danach präsentiert die Band, mit neuem Labeldeal ausgerüstet, ihr neuestes Langeisen „Justified Genocide“. Der mittlerweile fünfte Streich, knüpft dabei nahtlos an alte Trademarks an.

Diese Trademarks sind Roher, ungezügelter Death Thrash geradewegs auf die Zwölf. Mit einer gehörigen Portion Wut und Aggression ausstaffiert entfacht das Quartett auf „Justified Genocide“ einen musikalischen Orkan vor dem Herren. Rasend schnell sägen die Riffs, unterstützt von einem druckvollen Bass, aus den Boxen. Dazu gesellt sich auf den Punkt gespieltes Power-Drumming das alles in Schutt und Asche legt. Nur in ganz wenigen Momenten drosselt man das Tempo, um mit ein paar Groove Parts und geschickt konzipierten Soli für Abwechslung zu sorgen. Danach nimmt der Hochgeschwindigkeitsexpress seine dunkle zerstörerische Fahrt aber sofort wieder auf.
Thanatos beherrschen ihr Handwerk außerordentlich gut und wissen Stimmung zu erzeugen. Eigentlich kein Wunder, hat man sich doch schon in solch formidablen Oranje Kapellen wie Hail of Bullets, Asphyx oder Melechesh verdient gemacht. Die neun Eigenkompositionen - neben dem Massacre Cover ’Dawn Of Eternity’ gibt’s noch eine Version des Dark Angel Klassikers ’The Burning Of Sodom’ - knallen dem Hörer wie aus einem Guß gezockt in die Gehörgänge und zeichnen ein apokalyptisches Gesamtbild.

Diesem musikalischen Orkan, den Thanatos entfachen, ebenbürtig ist auch das unheilvoll keifende Organ von Sänger Stephan Gebedi und die textliche Konzeption des Albums. Die basiert nämlich auf der dunklen Seite unserer Gesellschaft des zwanzigstens Jahrhunderts: Diktatoren wie Hitler oder Saddam Hussein, religiöse Fanatiker oder morbide Fantasien, werden hier zur Sprache gebracht. Um von vornherein kontroversen Diskussionen aus dem Weg zu gehen, hat die Band unter folgendem Link http://www.thanatos.info/html/main.htm. Liner Notes zu jedem Song veröffentlicht. Für die sehr gute Produktion von „Justified Genocide“ zeichnet sich im übrigen Dan Swanö verantwortlich.

Fazit: Einen richtig derben Brocken Death/Thrash Metal den Thanatos mit „Justified Genocide“ abliefern. Für Fans des Genres herrscht hier sicher eine unumgängliche Anschaffungspflicht.

Ihr steht auf zornigen Metal und Emo-Pop klingt für Euch wie das Gesäusel eines Knabenchors? Na dann haben wir etwas für euch! Eine mächtig phatte Death-Abrissbirne erwartet euch mit Thanatos! Die niederländische Band besteht bereits seit, man höre und staune, 1984! Das hört sich zwar angestaubt an, ist es aber ganz und gar nicht! Der Beweis ist das neueste Werk mit dem Namen "Justified Genocide".

Es ist das fünfte Album der Band, eigentlich müsste man sagen erst das fünfte Album nach der Gründung vor 25 Jahren. Wie bei vielen anderen Bands verlief natürlich auch bei Thanatos die Geschichte nicht ohne einen längeren Break. Wenngleich auch nur noch eines der Gründungsmitglieder, Stephan Gebedi, der Band bis dato erhalten blieb, bleibt Thanatos dem Oldschool-Deathmetal treu. Vom Sound geht es, wie bereits erwähnt, böse und sehr aggro zur Sache. Da wird gekeift und die schnellen Riffs schmettern einem nur so entgegen, begleitet durch das vom Drummer entfachte Inferno. Das gefällt richtig gut, auch wenn nicht alles beim ersten Anhören sitzt, der "zweite" Anzug passt dann allerdings umso perfekter! Ruhepausen gönnt die Band sich und dem Zuhörer kaum, und wenn doch, dann nur um danach wieder zornig loszustürmen. Aufgearbeitet wird die dunkle Geschichte der Menschheit, besonders des zweiten Weltkriegs - die Band distanziert sich übrigens eindeutig vom Nationalsozialismus. Die Songs sind der Oberburner und legen die Gehörgänge richtig frei...hier einen einzelnen Song hervorzuheben wäre nicht gerechtfertigt! Zerstörerisch verwüstend wie es das Cover schon andeutet! Einfach nur geil!!!

Thanatos gibt es bereits seit 1984, somit sind sie die vermutlich dienstälteste holländische Death-Metal-Band - was ihnen allerdings nicht viel nützt, wirklich bekannt sind sie aktuell höchstens deshalb, weil Gitarrist/Bandkopf (und hier auch Shouter) Stephan Gebédi 2008 mit der All-Star-Band Hail Of Bullets (u.a. Leute von Asphyx, ex-Pestilence, Gorefest) von sich reden machte.

Mit deren Bolt Thrower-affinem Panzer-Sound hat Justified Genocide allerdings nicht viel gemein. Hier ist Highspeed angesagt, der Thrash-Einfluss ist absolut unüberhörbar, für Auflockerung sorgen die vielen melodischen Gitarren-Soli, während derer die Band stark auf die Bremse tritt. Alles in allem gibt es hier genau das, was man von einem Death-Metal-Album erwartet: Gute (und sehr viele verschiedene) Riffs, technisches Können sowie einen amtlichen Sound von Dan Swanö. Im Gegensatz zu Hail Of Bullets, Amon Amarth und Konsorten dann aber wohl doch eher Special Interest denn Death-Metal-Mainstream.

Nuevo disco de Thrash Metal editado en Rotterdam (Holanda) en los Excess Studios y masterizado por nada menos que Dan Swanö en los estudios Unisound (Swecia). Con dicha carta de recomendación… ¿Quién diría que no? ¿Que miento? Pasad y escuchad…

Thanatos -grupo más que conocido de Thrash Metal (Thrash/Death)- tras un largo periodo de inactividad ha decidido sacar nuevo disco. Tras unos pequeños problemillas con su anterior sello (Black Lotus) y pasados cerca de dos años, Deity Down Records decidió coger el toro por los cuernos y hacer posible la edición de “Justified Genocide”.

Dicho disco está lleno de furia y calidad en su máxima expresión; los holandeses han conseguido engendrar un disco que contiene en su seno grandes rasgos del Thrash Metal old-school pero sin dejar de lado el importante hecho de que la música evoluciona. El resultado ha sido un “discazo” de once temas de tres minutos de duración media en los que incluso se atreven a versionar a Massacre o Dark Angel.

“Justified Genocide” contiene todos los aspectos que -creo- podemos esperar de un disco de Thrash Metal actual. Si nos fijamos en temas como “Destruction, creation, chaos” podemos observar como mezclan una “intro” lenta con un estallido de violencia en toda regla; sin irnos más lejos dicho aspecto se repite en “Justified Genocide” y “And Jesus kept”. También podemos encontrar temas muy rápidos en los que además, fusionan dos tipos de registro de voz a la perfección; podrían ser “The netherworld” o la cover de Massacre “Dawn of eternity”.

Todo junto en un disco, no se puede pedir más.

En cuanto a la batería recalcar que demuestra un doble bombo muy agresivo pero sin llegar al punto de la pesadez; comportando temas muy dinámicos y fluidos. Si esto lo juntamos con los riffs sencillos pero “pesados” típicos del Thrash Metal obtenemos un disco que roza el sobresaliente. No esperábamos menos de artistas de la talla de Stephan Gebédi (Hail of Bullets), Paul Baayens (Hail of Bullets, Asphyx), Marco de Bruin o Yuri Rinkel (Melechesh) ¿o sí? (risas).

Como conclusión comentar que muchas veces me dan bastante igual las influencias que tengan los artistas o en que grupos hayan tocado e incluso diría que me da igual a cargo de quien ha corrido la masterización pero en dicho caso, era poco probable que no naciera una joya digna de recordar de este año 2009.

Die THANATOS-Members Paul Baayens, Stephan Gebédi und Yuri Rinkel haben sich mittlerweile vornehmlich einen Namen durch ihre weitaus bekannteren Betätigungsfelder Asphyx, Hail Of Bullets und Melechesh gemacht. Doch so mir nichts dir nichts wollte man das alte holländische Death/Thrash-Schlachtschiff dann auch nicht zu Grabe tragen und „Justified Genocide“ ist dann auch tatsächlich eine richtig geile Abrissbirne geworden. Paul und Stephan schütteln sich ein Sahneriff nach dem anderen aus dem Ärmel, die Drums donnern wie eine Herde wild gewordener Bisons und der meisterlich fette Mix von Dan Swanö setzt dem Ganzen die Krone auf. Tracks wie 'They Feed On Fear' oder 'The Devil’s Triangle' bieten aggressiven, mitreißenden Death/Thrash, der irgendwo zwischen Slayer, Possessed und Dark Angel angesiedelt ist. Als Bonus hält die CD noch vorzüglich eingespielte Covers von Massacre ('Dawn Of Eternity') und Dark Angel ('The Burning Of Sodom') bereit. Fett! È dal lontano 1984 che i Thanatos divulgano il verbo del metal estremo in Olanda, dando alle stampe album senza compromessi, sempre riassumibili con un "thrash + death", addizione tanto semplice sulla carta quanto - almeno il più delle volte - coinvolgente all'ascolto. Complici la bancarotta della loro ex etichetta, la Black Lotus Records, e gli impegni dei chitarristi Stephan Gebedi e Paul Baayens nei grandissimi Hail Of Bullets, era da un po' di tempo che il gruppo non si faceva sentire. Sono passati cinque anni dal precedente "Undead. Unholy. Divine.", ma - anche se forse è superfluo precisarlo - il nuovo "Justified Genocide" sarebbe potuto uscire anche soltanto dodici mesi dopo quell'ultimo lavoro, visto che di rilevanti differenze stilistiche qui non vi è proprio traccia. Al contrario, i Thanatos ci investono con nove nuovi episodi (più due cover) dove il thrash metal degli anni '80 viene ancora una volta approcciato con furia death e spudorata attitudine old school, per un risultato finale senz'altro gradevole e divertente. Suoni e formule sono fieramente ancorate al passato, senza modernismi e plastificazioni fuori luogo, così come le linee vocali di Gebedi, che sbraita dall'inizio alla fine del disco con il suo solito growling vecchio stampo. Come accennato, il quartetto in questa occasione propone anche un paio di cover song: "Dawn Of Eternity" dei Massacre e "The Burning Of Sodom" dei Dark Angel... due tracce che sembrano essere state scelte appositamente per ribadire - semmai ce ne fosse ancora il bisogno - quali siano le influenze principali dei nostri. Nel complesso, dunque, un lavoro niente male: con tutta probabilità lo scettro del thrash-death made in Holland è ormai passato definitivamente nelle mani dei lanciatissimi Legion Of The Damned, ma, se apprezzate il genere, i Thanatos di "Justified Genocide" non mancheranno di regalarvi qualche bel momento. Concreti e onesti.

Wer die Abwrackprämie im Auge hat und seine Karre auf den letzten Metern nochmal so richtig durchschroten möchte, der greift zum aktuellen THANATOS-Album.

Einfach Scheiben runterkurbeln, Motor anstellen und die Play-Taste Vom Autoradio drücken. Wer schon beim ersten Thrash/Death Gewitter "they feed the fear" nicht den Drang verspürt, das Gaspedal volle Kanne durchzutreten, der ist entweder taub oder hat vergessen zu tanken.

Und auch die restlichen Songs auf "justified genocide" pusten den letzten Rost aus Eurer Karre. Zwar nehmen die Burschen auf ihrem mittlerweile fünften Studioalbum hin und wieder das Tempo raus ("destruction.chaos.creation"), überwiegend wird jedoch die Keule aus dem Sack geholt. Das tut den Songs aber keinen Abbruch. Wer ein amtliches Abgeh-Album für den Frühling sucht, der greift bedenkenlos zu.

Thanatos sind ja schon seit 1984 in der Szene aktiv, die Band hat einiges an Demos und Alben in Ihrem Backkatalog. 2009 hat die Band einen Deal mit dem holländischen Label Deity Down Records an Land gezogen, welches auch für den Vertrieb von Justified Genocide verantwortlich zeichnet.

Das Label verspricht mit dem neuen Material das “most raw and in your face sounding records ever “ von Thanatos, soweit so gut, also rein mit der Scheibe in den Player um zu hören was an der Aussage so dran ist. They Feed on Fair belegt auch sofort das hier keine große reden geschwungen wurden, aggressiv und räudig geht es direkt und ohne Umschweife zur Sache. Überwiegend in thrashigem Uptempostil wird hier die Axt geschwungen, die Gitarrenfraktion Gebedi & Baayens erzeugt mit schneidenden Riffs mächtig Druck im Kessel. Damit der Kessel jedoch nicht vorzeitig hochgeht sorgt das im Mittelteil eingebrachte melodische Gitarrensolo, was anfangs irgendwie deplatziert wirkt aber sich bei mehrmaligem hören doch schön in den Song einbettet. Klasse Einstand in die Scheibe!

Die Produktion der Scheibe klingt verdammt fett und sehr harmonisch, kein Wunder war doch Soundguru Dan Swäno für den Mix und das Mastering verantwortlich. “Destruction.Chaos.Creation“ beginnt zäh und verstörend, zieht aber sofort wieder an und pendelt dann in verschiedenen Passagen und Songstrukturen hin und her. Mal chaotisch vorwärts preschend um dann wieder in gegenläufigerem Tempo unterwegs zu sein, ein Song der auch wieder überzeugen kann. Weiter geht’s mit “The Devils Triangle“ der wieder mehr auf den Punkt kommt und mit fettesten stakkato Thrashriffs sehr gut im Gehörgang haftet und Ohrwurmcharacter besitzt. Der Bass wummert treibend ohne Gnade durch den Song und ist in dem Gemetzel sehr fein heraus zu hören was ja auch nicht gerade alltäglich ist. Der Gesang von Stephan Gebedi  passt mit seiner heiseren und auch gerne mal etwas tieferen  Stimmlage perfekt zu der räudigen und harschen Ausrichtung der Mucke. “March of the Infidels“ traktiert mit teils Slayerartigen garstigen Solis und rotiert mit mächtigem Speed,  kurz und knackig wird hier alles in Grund und Boden geholzt. Eine absolut überzeugende Gitarrenarbeit bei jedem verdammten Song, kein Wunder bei den großartigen Protagonisten welche hier am Werk sind. Ein sehr geiles düsteres Riffgewand leitet “Justified Genocide“ ein, anschließendes knackiges Speedgepolter um dann im Mittelteil wieder in schleppendes absolut vernichtendes Midtempo zurück zu fallen der mit den passenden krankhaft klingenden Gesangsparts zusätzlich aufgewertet wird. Heftig und mächtig, ein Brecher vor dem Herrn.

Eine wiederum superbe Gitarrenarbeit bläst zum Anfang von “The Netherworld“ gleich zum Sturm und zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch den gesamten Song. Auch das exzellente Drumming lässt doch des öfteren Aufhorchen, Yuri Rinkel an den Drums bearbeitet die Felle wie ein Derwisch und das tight wie ein Schweizer Uhrwerk.  Als altem eingefleischtem Deathmaniac zaubern mir die ersten Takte des Übersongs von Massacre “Dawn of Eternity“ eine mächtige Gänsehaut auf die Arme. Hier wird der Deathmetalanteil der Scheibe mal so richtig hochgeschraubt und ich kann der Band attestieren hier eine absolut geile Coverversion eingeprügelt zu haben. Ultrageil.

“Apostles of Damnation“ zeigt schön die Death/Thrashsymbiose von Thanatos auf, überwiegend im groovigen Tempo mit tiefer gestimmten Gitarren, thrashigem Riffing und sehr ansprechendem Drumming entwickelt sich der Song zu einem harten treibendem Schleifer der durch die Vocals von Stephan Gebedi stets in thrashigem Gefilde gehalten wird. Durch die langsame Ausrichtung bleibt sehr viel platz für die Kreativität der einzelnen Musiker, was sich extrem beim durchweg virtous genialen Drumming aufzeigt.  Klasse Song mit Tiefgang.

“Upwards Spiritiual Evolution“ kann hier nicht ganz mithalten und geht auch wieder in die entgegen gesetzte Richtung nämlich wieder mit Volldampf nach vorne. Mit Blastbeats geschwängerte knackige Abrissbirne die eigentlich den Schlusspunkt des Album setzt und nochmal aufzeigt wie räudiger Thrashmetal klingen kann.

Die beiden Bonustracks  “And Jesus Wept“ und “The Burning of Sodom “ (Dark Angel Cover) welche bereits 2006 schon auf Vinyl veröffentlicht wurden, können meines Erachtens vom Songwriting der neuen Scheibe nicht ganz mithalten. Auch klingt das Original von Dark Angel doch wesentlich wuchtiger und ausgewogener. Zumal der Gesang von Gedebi hier auch nicht überzeugen kann, da nehme ich lieber mit dem Original vorlieb.

Fazit: Wer seinen Thrash gerne mal mit etwas Death würzt, rohe und heftige Songs liebt, die zudem noch qualitativ sehr hochwertig komponiert und eingespielt wurden, der wird beim neuen Thanatos Album mit Sicherheit nicht enttäuscht werden. Das Werk ist nicht nur für Thrasher empfehlenswert, auch eingefleischte Deather sollten hier ruhig mal ein Ohr riskieren.

With a history reaching as far back as 1984 Thanatos can be truly called Holland’s earliest death/thrash metal band. Coming 5 long years after Thanatos’ superb “Undead.Unholy.Divine” (on the now defunct Black Lotus Records) Deity Down Records have released what is probably their most important and prestigious release to date. The downtime hasn't hurt guitarist/vocalist Stephan Gebedi and his comrades one bit seeing how “Justified Genocide” is the band’s most raw and aggressive album to date. Together with Paul Baayens (Hail Of Bullets) Gebedi lays down a dense and choppy torrent of neckbreaking and fingertwisting riffs. Marco de Bruin (bass) and Yuri Rinkel (drums) follow suit and both have come more into their own since the last record. Great cover of Massacre vintage groove classic ‘Dawn Of Eternity’ and Sodom’s ‘The Burning Of Sodom’. Recorded at Excess Studios, Rotterdam and mixed/mastered by Dan Swanö at Unisound Studios in Orebro, Sweden “Justified Genocide” comes with a bone-heavy production that reserves enough individual space for each instrument while giving the whole a heavy but wide-range while retaining the band’s old school rawness. The artwork, design and lay-out by bassist Marco de Bruin is probably the best Thanatos have had to date. Thanatos might just have delivered their most accomplished and brutal record to date.

Oh, how I dreaded the moment when I would have to review this album. I don’t generally listen to thrash metal, and there are very few bands of the genre I really appreciate. So when I get a promo of a thrash band I get a feeling of despair, ‘cause I’m not all that familiar with the genre and will most likely highly dislike the record. So, Justified genocide laid here for a while, still wrapped in its plastic, before I even dared listen to it. But this was luckily one of those few times where I should’ve just put it on and get my fears blown out the window, ‘cause this is one hell of an album.

Thanatos have apparently been around since 1984, but I’ve never heard of them before (might be that general antipathy towards the genre, maybe), and this is their fifth fullength. But it’s not pure thrash, far from it. Old school death metal is mixed with the grooviest thrash I’ve heard, bringing old Floridian acts to mind. But I even detect a tad black metal, or maybe it’s the vocals leading me astray. Now don’t get me wrong, this is not ordinary black metal shrieks, but a mixture of typical thrash screams, black and semi-death metal growls. And his voice is wicked, I tell you. Tight, slick riffing carrying with it loads of groove and energy lays the foundation for the music. And with the speeding drum work and vocals from the abyss it’s almost impossible not to get drawn in. You can’t listen to this and sit still; you have to get jiggy with it.

Most tracks range from mid tempo to extreme blasting, and the seriously fast bits add brutality and gets the adrenaline pumping. And it’s some of the most brutal thrash I’ve encountered. But Thanatos also show off some slower material, like for instance The devil’s triangle, which is a marvelous track. Quite frankly they’re all marvelous tracks. Anti-religious lyrics are mixed with historical observations and alien fantasies, as well as some social criticism. And I like it, packing some constructive and serious lyricism and not just hailing Satan like many other bands.

Justified genocide is definitely one of the most violent and powerful thrash albums I’ve ever heard. A highly recommended buy!

Nuovo lavoro per il gruppo olandese dei Thanatos, che va ad arricchire ulteriormente il già copioso filone del thrash/death metal. Eppure i quattro musicisti sanno il fatto loro e lo dimostrano fin dall'opener "They Feed On Fear", un pezzo di pregevolissima fattura, che avvinghia l'ascoltatore già dalle prime note con ritmi vorticosi ed opprimenti, ma che allo stesso tempo lascia intravedere qualche spiraglio di luce grazie all'ispirato solismo di Paul Baayens.

Se da una parte non mancano riferimenti agli Slayer più sulfurei (è noto, del resto, che King e Hannemann hanno influenzato perfino Mozart e Paganini), è altresì vero che nel presente 'Justified Genocide' i nostri riescono a mostrare il loro animo più puro, esprimendo per quasi quaranta minuti un concentrato personale di rabbia e violenza che lascia senza fiato.

Specchio della ferocia musicata dai Thanatos è l'ossessiva "The Netherworld", brano vincente sia nei momenti più tirati, sia quando la band decide di rallentare, per cedere il passo ad atmosfere più oscure e claustrofobiche.
Reso ancora più godibile da suoni realmente ben dosati, 'Justified Genocide' piacerà sicuramente a tutti gli appassionati di quel metal nato sul confine tra thrash e death. Sotto allora con "Destruction.Chaos.Creation" e "Upwards Spiritual Evolution": troverete pane per i vostri denti.

Der erste Eindruck ist manchmal entscheidend. Aus dieser Aussage könnte man entnehmen, das die Erfahrung der Sinne sofort überzeugend sein muss, ansonsten wird alles höchstens auf den Platz der Mittelmäßigkeit verwiesen. Ganz so einfach ist das aber nicht. Besonders im Musikbereich wird man öfters eines besseren belehrt. Obwohl auch da der erste Eindruck in den Gedanken haften bleiben kann. Das was man anfänglich gedacht hat, ändert sich nicht großartig, sondern es wird zu der entgültigen Meinung hinzugefügt.

Das erste Stück auf „Justified Genocide“ mit dem Titel „They Feed On Fear“ vermittelt zunächst, das der Sound stark an Übersteuerung kränkelt. Die Gitarren kratzen dermaßen übertrieben, das der Vergleich mit dem Klang von Fingernägeln, die an einer Tafel entlang gerissen werden, durchaus aufkommen kann. Aufgrund der enormen Verzerrung im Gitarrensound geht einiges an Druck und Volumen verloren. Was anscheinend brachial klingen sollte, ist letztendlich nur als hart zu bezeichnen. Um extreme Musik überzeugend wirken zu lassen, muss sie aus mehr als nur Härte bestehen.

Warum sollte man sich nun dieses Review noch komplett durchlesen? Die Sache sei doch klar. Der Sound auf dem Album wäre Mist, also kann die eigentliche Qualität einiger Songs niemals zum Ausdruck kommen. Man bräuchte es sich gar nicht erst zulegen, da man es sich sowieso nicht vollständig anhören werde. Die Sache lässt sich schnell klären. Trotz des vermurksten Sounds handelt es sich bei „Justified Genocide“ um ein Album, das durchgehend exzellentes Songmaterial enthält. Derjenige, der nicht mehr weitergelesen hat, wird das also nicht erfahren.

Anhand des vorhin genannten Titels „They Feed On Fear“ lässt sich gut beschreiben, warum THANATOS es verdient haben, mit ihrem neusten Werk gehört zu werden. Dieser Song besteht aus einer Vielfalt an Ideen, von denen nicht eine überflüssig wirkt. Das liegt daran, weil jeder neue Ansatz dem vorigen ähnelt und er dennoch seine eigene Note hat. Natürlich heißt das nicht, das zum Beispiel ein Riff bloß in einer anderen Tonart gespielt wird. Genau das wäre ja quatsch. In dem Stück passt einfach alles zusammen. Das gilt auch für die einzelnen Elemente, sei es der Gesang, der Bass, die Gitarren, oder das Schlagzeug. Und obwohl die Aufnahmequalität zu wünschen übrig lässt, wirkt das ganze musikalische Geschehen mitreißend. Alleine das spricht für die Stärke des Songs. Eben diese Eigenschaft lässt sich auch bei den anderen Titeln feststellen. Wobei jeder einen eigenen Wiedererkennungswert hat. Sei es zum Beispiel „The Devil’s Triangle“, „The Netherworld“, oder „March Of The Infidels“, keines dieser Stücke ist mit dem anderen zu vergleichen. Die Pracht an passendem Ideenreichtum ist bei allen aber gleich.

Mit „Justified Genocide“ können THANATOS alte Fans begeistern und zugleich neue dazugewinnen, egal ob die Tonabmischung misslungen ist.

There's something to be said about a band that have been around for over twenty years and are still kicking. THANATOS, releasing their first live tape in 1987, are one such band. Their breed of Thrash/Death Metal harkens back to the older generation while still sounding relatively modern and keeping a good sense of power. A powerful and professional production gives it a energy and sense of purpose that remains intact throughout the entire release.

On “Justified Genocide” THANATOS don't break any boundaries or push anything relatively new to the scene. The music is all strictly within the Death/Thrash style that they've perfected over the years, with the focus being on the distinctive and varied growls and the constantly punishing riffs – either mid-tempo or poundingly fast. Occasionally hints of melodic and slightly less brutal riffs find their way into the music, such as the breathtaking climax of the first song “They Feed On Fear”. These help break up the monotony of the record and whenever they appear it is nearly always a highlight. The vocals are a mix between Thrash and Black Metal, a sneering growl/snarl that is constantly aggressive and never relenting; they work really well with the backdrop of music that is supplied.

This record is pretty much made for the people who preferred the early nineties breed of Extreme Metal, while listening to the record you are dragged back to that era constantly. It shows how the band have dedicated themselves to this kind of music and haven't tried to keep up with the times by making different music than what they enjoy making. It's a respectable trait. Luckily, there are sprinkling's of genius throughout the album that pop up when you least expect them. The second half of “They Feed On Fear” is a brilliantly melodic and amazingly well paced charge that comes completely out of the blue. The technical guitar work throughout parts of “March Of The Infidels” is wonderfully timed and creative, and the amazingly atmospheric and haunting interlude two minutes into “Apostles Of Damnation” is simply stunning, and completely unexpected.

“Justified Genocide” is a strong album from a band who have been going for a long time now, and people who like this music should eat this up. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, and the style has been done to death elsewhere but that doesn't make the album any less enjoyable. Sprinklings of innovation and well thought out moments of genius turn what could have been a rather generic album into something seriously enjoyable.

Obwohl dieser Monat an starken Death Metal -releases nicht gerade arm ist und Pestilence ein überraschend gutes comeback-album rausgefeuert haben, geht der Pokal an deren Landsleute THANATOS. Immerhinbereeits 25 Jahre alt, handelt es sich bei 'Justified Genocide' gerade einmal um das fünfte vollständige Album der Niederländer. Und das ist ein prima Geburtstags-geschenk, denn einerseits hört man den Musikern die Routine an, andererseits klingt die Gruppe immer noch frisch und hungrig wie eine blutjunge Newcomer-formation. Vielleicht liegt es daran dass man bislang nie den großen Wurf landen konnte, vielleicht hat das Gitarrentandem Stephan Gebédi/Paul Baayens sich auch von ihrem Erfolg mit Hail Of Bullets beflügeln lassen. Derart Old School und trotzdem zeitgemaß und abwechslungsreich zu klingen, stellt einen Spagat dar der nicht vielen Bands gelingt. Alleine der stilistische Sprung zwischen dem Opener 'They Feed On Fear' (melodisch, eingängig, schnell) und dem zweiten Track 'Destruction.Chaos.Creation' mit seinem leicht schrägen Akkorden im Stil von Morgoths 'Odium"-Großtat ist Weltklasse. Vor allem angesichts der Tatsacht, dass alles zusammenpasst und es keinen qualitativen Abfall zu verzeichnen gibt. Die Herrlichkeit geht fast durchgehend so weiter, und erfreulicherweise klingt hier fast nichts nach Hail Of Bullets. Gebedi - der bei THANATOS selbst für die kompetenten und charismatischen Growls verantwortlich ist - hat es mit dieser glorreichen Geschichte wahrlich nicht nötig, bie sich selbst zu klauen. Das macht alleine die leidenschaftlich dargebotene Coverversion von Massacres 'Dawn Of Eternity', bei THANATOS steht die Liebe zur Muzik vor allem anderen, den ganz großen Erfolg überlässt man freiwillig den anderen. Wie dem auch sei, ein atmosphärisches Meisterstück wie 'Apostles Of Damnation' wäre alleine schon den Kaufpreis wert, doch auch der zwischen schleppend und Highspeed pendelnde Titeltrack oder das brutale 'The Netherworld' sind Death Metal-Weltklasse. Als Bonus kredenzt man noch das Dark Angel-Cover 'The Burning Of Sodom' und den Song '...And Jesus Wept', die bereits 2006 auf der '...And Jesus Wept' veröffentlicht wurden und mitterweile nicht mehr ganz leicht zu bekommen sind. Ein schöneres Geburtstagsgeschenk hätte die Band sich selbst und den Fans nicht machen können!

Ich denke dieser Band dürften einige von euch noch kennen. Thanatos haben schon in den 90er für einiges aufsehen in der Death / Thrash Metal Scene gesorgt. Jetzt kommt das fünfte Album auf den Markt, hierfür konnte man Dan Swanö fur Mastering und Mix gewinnen. Merkt man sofort, da man jetzt neben einer geilen Mucke auch sehr guten Sound durch die Boxen geballert bekommt. Thrash Riffs so weit das Auge reicht und meist tiefe böse Death Metal Growls, die dies Album zu einem absolutem Hörgenuss machen. Die Doublebass hämmert schon druckvoll, da bleibt Ohrschmalz lang im Ohr sitzen so werden die Ohre durschgeputstet. Nach einer wahren Labelodyssee, ist man nun beim holländischen Label Deity Down Records gelandet und es wäre schön wenn man diesmal dort eine längere Haltestelle hat und dort mehr Veröffentlicht als 'nur' eine CD. Mit den Songs 'Dawn Of Eternity' (Massacre) und 'The Burning Of Sodom' (Dark Angel) hat man auch zwei sehr gelungene Coverversionen diesmal mit auf der CD. Die Band setzt sich jetzt aus Sänger und Gitarrist Stephan Gebédi (auch Hail Of Bullets), Gitarrist Paul Baayens (Hail Of Bullets), Bassist und Lead Gitarrist Marco deBruin sowie Drummer Yuri Rinkel (Melechesh) zusammen. Also, alles gestandene Jungs von Bands die man kennt und auch nicht zu verachten sind. Also, 'Justified Genocide' macht Spaß auf mehr und auf hoffentlich einige Live Shows und eine davon bei mir in der Nähe bitte.

It seems that this year will be Holland’s revenge. After the PESTILENCE comeback here comes the time for THANATOS, while ASPHYX are also preparing their new assult. And in all these you can also add the previous year’s fantastic album of HAIL OF BULLETS, a really ’war machine’ debut. THANATOS is a real banner for this country if it comes talking about the extreme Metal music. Except their exotic name these guys - and in special Stephan - are in the scene from 1984. And, yes, the "Speed Kills" demo may not be something bombastic, although you may think the different if keeping in mind when it came out , but their "Rebirth" recording plus, of course, the first two full–length LPs were nothing less than bombastic. These three basic - for Holland - bands became ’popular’ for two reasons. First, the great music and secondly and very important the fact that they had their own identity and style in the musical map. Neither Florida nor Sweden, nothing. And since we have THANATOS in this review, their style had major Thrash elements inside. In the beginning they were almost 100 per cent inside that genre but as the time went by they became more and more brutal. But although being totally ’Death’, you could always find Thrash parts there and basic SLAYER influences. And unfortunately the reason that they didn’t gain the recognition that the other two bands had was the terrible unluckiness with the record companies. They never had a constant support behind which led to them disappearing and split up in 1992, ’till their come–back in 1999.

In this new, number five, album I believe that THANATOS are running the best period since their before mentioned comeback. The thrashing stuff that takes your balls and puts them in your mouth is still present and more specifically with the very first song, "They Feed On Fear". And when in the end we face the morbid scream I think I’ll find myself melted to the floor. Without a second thought for this moment and only, for me, this album is worth a lot.

"Destruction. Chaos. Creation." starts slowly with a barrage of SLAYER-ish riffing. The divine voice tugs in the ’i’ are making me losing my mind, while a Death Metal holocaust follows. During "The Devil’s Triangle" things are becoming even better. A song like this was unleashed from "Feeding On Angels" of SOULBURN or the last ASPHYX CD, looking like being death itself while once again the vocals are great. "March Of The Infidels" is also good and powerful plus the self–titled cut in the beginning seems like a threnody and then turns into a headbanging hell. The riff is fucking brilliant and AGAIN (I know you are tired) the vocals tear me apart. A fist to all the tyrants of the world that raped humanity cause of their megalomania. A concept that in general lines is being followed in all album’s entity with well–written lyrics.

Can I say to you that "The Netherword" is also ear drilling? How the bloody hell did they manage to write such good songs? The cover on "Dawn Of Eternity" of MASSACRE is good enough; look, the original is ultimate hymn but right now I don’t care. THANATOS is on my mind. "Apostles Of Damnation" is slow, heavy but probably the most mediocre of the album. The closure with "Upwards Spiritual Evolution" comes with a strange riffing, sometimes close to MORBID ANGEL’s stuff but it is Death Metal to the bone. There are also two bonus tracks, the re–recording of "And Jesus Wept" from the "Realm Of Ecstacy" release (one of their best songs ever) plus a cover on "The Burning Of Sodom" of the almighty DARK ANGEL. Well, for this choice and only I must put more credit to this release. Both of the songs were released in 2006 via Konqueror Records.

THANATOS came and threw mayhem and destruction. A killer lineup, with Paul Baayens in guitars being also a member of ASPHYX and HAIL OF BULLETS, bassist Marco De Bruin that had also played some very good guitars solo and the bulldozer that listens to the name Yuri Rinkel is hitting without mercy both in blasting and mid–paced skin scalping. The album is perfect. End. I cannot wait any longer for the other return. Death, the very brutal way.

Na vorig jaar met Hail Of Bullets het imposante debuut '…Of Frost And War' te hebben afgeleverd, is gitarist (en zanger binnen Thanatos) Stephan Gebedi ditmaal terug met een plaat van zijn 'eigen' band. Die overigens al een tijdje kant en klaar op een releasedatum lag te wachten. Eenmaal onderdak bij Deity Down Records is het daar nu toch van gekomen en is vijf jaar na 'Unholy.Undead.Divine' het vijfde Thanatos-album een feit. Geen punt, want op platen als deze willen we best even wachten.

Zelden kwam Thanatos namelijk zo sterk en krachtig voor de dag als op dit nieuwe album. Het voorlaatste 'Unholy.Undead.Divine' wordt moeiteloos overtroffen met songs die qua brutaliteit en diversiteit niets te wensen overlaten en waarin de death- en thrash-invloeden van de band versmelten tot een zeer coherent en effectief totaalgeluid. Bovendien is 'Justified Genocide', na het sololoze HOB-debuut, weer een plaat waarop rijkelijk met gitaarsolo's wordt gestrooid. De mod-der-vet-te productie is van de hand van Dan Swano.

Chiamatelo god of death. Magari mini god of death, ma sempre god, per piacere. In questo preciso momento Stefan Gebedi è al timone di alcune delle migliori realtà estreme olandesi. E no, non è entrato negli Epica. Stephan Gebedi è uno di quei personaggi (che saranno in tutto una decina, l’Olanda è piccolina) che si reinventano, riuniscono, ristampano, progettano, jammano, in una pletora di bands estreme, ultimamente quasi sempre di grande qualità. E non è nemmeno da pochi anni che il nostro si da così tanto da fare, visto che i suoi Thanatos sono conosciuti come la prima band estrema olandese. Che poi non se li sia filati nessuno è un altro discorso, e per piacere parlate piano che non ci senta. Quello che conta, ora, è che Stephan ci ha stupito un paio di stagioni fa con il debutto degli Hail Of Bullets e adesso il nostro torna anche coi suoi Thanatos. E che ritorno! La formazione dell’anno 2009 è la stessa di qualche anno fa, un conglomerato di vecchie scorregge della scena con un curriculum lungo così, tra cui citiamo Paul Bayeens, già negli stessi Hail Of Bullets e anche negli Asphyx (pronti anche loro al rientro) e i risultati si sentono. Thrash/death vecchio stampo, di matrice europea, anche piuttosto variegato, in grado di assaltare l’ascoltatore con frustate stile Kreator/Destruction ma anche in grado concedersi diversi mid-tempos sfiziosi. Non mancano le influenze più death metal classico, in grado di richiamare alla mente gente come Morgoth, gli stessi Asphyx o gli Obituary. Ottima anche la cover dei Massacre, 'Dawn Of Eternity'. In generale il lavoro delle chitarre è di grande qualità, sia nelle ritmiche che nei solos, in grado di creare veramente un’atmosfera cupa e disperata. Equamente diviso fra marce funebri e pistolettate in testa, ‘Justified Genocide’ è un grande disco, decisamente superiore ad ’Undead, Unholy, Divine’ di qualche anno fa. Giusto per, ‘Justified Genocide’ accoppa in colpo solo l’ultimo Kreator e l’ultimo Destruction, e se i Necrodeath facessero un disco così grideremmo al miracolo. All’inferno senza passare dal via. Ma felici.

Het heeft een hele tijd geduurd voordat de vijfde studioplaat van Thanatos het levenslicht zag. Dat kwam niet zozeer door de Rotterdamse deathmetalformatie zelf. Die nam het album zo’n twee geleden al grotendeels op. Helaas ging het toenmalige platenlabel Black Lotus failliet en kwam de afronding in het geding. Helemaal toen frontman Stephen Gebédi en gitarist Paul Baayens het onverwacht druk kregen met hun andere band Hail Of Bullets. Uiteindelijk is Justified Genocide toch afgerond, en het is een van de sterkste platen in de 25-jarige bandgeschiedenis geworden. Dat ligt aan de knallende mix van Dan Swanö (Edge Of Sanity, Bloodbath), aan een sterke remake van Massacre’s Dawn Of Eternity en aan de toevoeging van de nummers And Jesus Wept en Dark Angel-cover The Burning Of Sodom, afkomstig van een EP uit 2006. Maar meer nog dan dat heeft Thanatos acht knallende thrash/deathmetalsongs geschreven die zich qua niveau kunnen meten met cultplaten Emerging From The Netherworlds (1990) en Realm Of Ecstasy (1992) en dankzij blastbeats, messcherp gitaarwerk en controversiële teksten tegelijkertijd aansluiting vinden bij de hedendaagse metalstandaard.

Die Death-Metal-Band Thanatos präsentiert sich auf ihrem fünften Album "Justified Genocide" vor allem mal hart - die Riffs brettern, die Double-Bassdrum donnert, die Texte werden geshoutet. Trotz allem geht das Ganze nicht nur in Soundbrei auf - es sind durchaus hier und dort auch Melodien zu erkennen, dazu gibt es einige Gitarren-Soli und mitreißende Passagen, in denen die Riffs mal nicht nur bretthart geschlagen werden, sondern den Hören knackig auffangen. Für Death-Metal-Freaks sicher ein Album, in das sie reinhören sollten.

Dall’ Olanda una conferma, quella dei Thanatos, considerati i portabandiera del thrash/death old-scholl di matrice europea assieme a Kreator e Destruction. Il nuovo lavoro degli olandesi non si discosta di una virgola dalle matrici estreme europee ma allo stesso tempo risulta fresco e godibile. Riffing mozzafiato, una line-up di tutto rispetto e brani killer che arrivano dritti in testa come il colpo di un revolver. Un’ onesta attitudine e una buona produzione rende giustizia ad ogni singolo brano contenuto in questo lavoro dove ogni singola nota risulta potente e aggressiva, senza bisogno di ricercare formule pregne di modernismi o artifici di sorta. Ottime le due cover presenti ovvero “ Dawn Of Eternity” dei Massacre e “The Burning Of Sodom” dei Dark Angel; scelta quanto mai più azzeccata tanto per ribadire l’onestà e le origini stilistiche dei Thanatos.

Obwohl die Holländer dieses Jahr ihr 25-jähriges Bestehen feiern können, hat die Band es nie aus dem Underground heraus geschafft, auch wenn ihre Fans die etlichen Demos und den vier Alben in allen Ehren halten. „Justified Genocide“ sollte bereits vor ein paar Jahren via Black Lotus erscheinen. Da die Griechen aber mehr oder weniger über Nacht sich bankrott melden mussten, hielt die Band die Aufnahmen erst einmal zurück. Mit dem Erfolg von HAIL OF BULLETS, bei denen Bandgründer Stephan Gebedi und Paul Baayens (ebenso auch noch bei ASPHYX tätig) mitholzen, versucht man es nun also noch einmal. Himmelhoch jauchzend springen Kuttenträger über leere Bierdosen und von der eingefetteten Couch und das zu Recht!

Jeder Ton auf dem fünften Streich der Käsepeitscher schreit nach Aggression und zwingt den eingeschworenen Headbanger ehrfürchtig zu Boden. Dass man MASSACREs Klassiker ‚Dawn of Eternity’ in seinen Death-Thrashigen Sound einbettete sei nur nebenbei erwähnt, denn die eigenen Nummern sind auch ohne Cover stark genug, um „Justified Genocide“ als weiteres Meisterwerk der Bolzkunst zu betiteln. Dabei muss es nicht immer ein Sturmangriff sein, der die Gehörgänge wohlwollend malträtiert. ‚Apostles Of Damnation’ doomt sich Leichenzerfleddernd in eine beängstigende Atmosphäre, die durch die sicken Soli und dezenten Einspielungen diverser Klänge aus Splatterfilmen weiter verstärkt wird.

Zum krönenden Abschluss hat man noch DARK ANGELs ‚The Burning Of Sodom’ und den eigenen Hit ‚And Jesus Wept’ in aktuellem Soundgewand von der 2006er 7“draufgepackt.

Ob THANATOS jetzt den großen Durchbruch schaffen werden, bleibt fraglich. Vielleicht sollte man sich umbenennen – sie bieten jedenfalls mindestens genauso viele SLAYER-Riffs und Soli wie ihre Landsmänner von LOTD auf. Jeder eingefleischte Death-Thrasher sollte sich aber „Justified Genocide“ zulegen – alle anderen unbedingt mal reinhören.

Nederlands oudste deathmetalband laat weer eens iets van zich horen! Vijf jaar na het sterke Undead. Unholy. Divine. (2004) komt er dan eindelijk een vervolg. Onder de naam Justified Genocide, een geweldige titel voor een album van een band die altijd een enorme bak agressie uit heeft weten te stoten. Maar kan dit album nog beter zijn dan zijn voorganger?

Thanatos bestaat inmiddels al weer 25 jaar jaar en is daarmee één van de eerste deathmetalbands uit Nederland. Toch zijn er in die lange tijd pas vijf echte albums uitgebracht (deze nieuwe meegerekend), duidelijk is dus dat Thanatos liever kwaliteit van kwantiteit aflevert.

Justified Genocide klinkt vanaf de eerste seconde als een echte deathmetal klassieker. Alsof we die 25 jaar weer terug zijn gegaan in de tijd zeg maar. Alle nummers kloppen gewoon en zwakke momenten zijn niet terug te vinden. Zelfs de twee covers zijn erg goed gedaan, ook al ben je geen fan van Massacre of Dark Angel.

Mooi is om te horen dat drummer Yuri Rinkel naast Melechesh ook in een normale strakke deathmetalband kan spelen. Op voorhand hoopte ik dat hij enkele elementen van Melechesh zou meenemen naar Thanatos, zoals die geweldige groove van hem, maar dat heeft hij uiteindelijk niet gedaan. Neemt niet weg dat hij erg goed drumt op Justified Genocide en dat je hem nu mag rekenen onder de toppers.

Toppunten van het album vind ik The Devil's Triangle, dat nummer schopt gewoon van voor tot achter heel wat konten in elkaar. En The Burning Of Sodom, de cover van Dark Angel is heel erg goed uitgevoerd. Van zulke covers mogen er meer gemaakt worden! Kortom Thanatos is een band ow wéér in de gaten te gaan houden.

Justified Genocide is een album wat alle deathmetalfans blind kunnen aanschaffen. Dat Thanatos al 25 jaar ervaring heeft is overal aan te horen. Echt het meest zware album is het niet, het snelste ook niet, Thanatos moet het meer hebben van sterke riffs en afwisseling.

Cade nell'anno in corso, il venticinquesimo anniversario dei Thanatos (risale al lontano 84, la fondazione della band olandese), ed è forse a celebrazione dello stesso, che Stephan Gebédi e soci, ci regalano, questo nuovo Justified Genocide, un album, che ribadisce la qualità della proposta sonora del combo di Rotterdam.

Undici monoliti, undici dichiarazioni di intenti votati all'aggressività; una aggressività, che vien fuori sotto forma di thrash/death molto classico, di matrice europea, ma maledettamente efficace, che ha il proprio punto di forza nella compattezza, e nella maestria con cui la band riesce a padroneggiare alcune sonorità (i Thanatos, sono considerati gli iniziatori della scena estrema olandese). Sin dalla iniziale They Feed On Fear, appaiono chiare le coordinate sonore di Justified Genocide, coordinate che guardano sia alla coppia Kreator/Destruction, che a quella Obituary/Master, senza per questo, dare alcuna impressione di déjà vu.

Ben congeniate, nel loro alternare mid tempos soffocanti (sono presenti alcuni riferimenti agli Asphyx di Last One Earth), e rasoiate speed, le tracks si pongono tutte su un ottimo livello qualitativo/compositivo, con alcuni picchi di eccellenza, come in The Devil's Triangle o nella virulenta title track. Di ottima fattura anche la cover Dawn Of Eternity, dei Massacre, che riesce nell'impresa di risultare ancora più malsana, rispetto alla versione originale.

Un ottimo, lavoro, che potrebbe essere tra i migliori mai prodotti dalla band, e che riesce a creare cupe e devastanti atmosfere post atomiche, grazie ad un lavoro di chitarra eccellente, sia nei solos, (affidati a Paul Baayens Hail Of Bullets, Asphyx), che nelle ritmiche; sempre sopra le righe il cantato di Stephan Gebédi, con il proprio alternare, growl e velenose scream al vetriolo.

Un album, che in ambito thrash/death, rasenta la perfezione, e che fa davvero pensare, in merito alle alterne fortune dei Thanatos, sempre ignorati dal grande pubblico, ma vera e propria cult band. Un piccolo e devastante must.

Gebédi und Baayens sind die Hälfte der HAIL OF BULLETS, man nehme noch einen Tel MELECHESH sowie einen reinen THANATOSler – und fertig ist ein Death-Thrash-Album oberen Niveaus, ein mehr als gutes Comeback. Im Fahrtwind der niederländischen (und verdammten) Legion sei es diesen Tulpenheinis noch viel mehr gegönnt, mal so richtig Lorbeeren einzuheimsen, denn sie sind schon seit gefühlten hundert Jahren aktiv - also irgendwie immer. Und in der Tat rockt die Scheibe fett, ist mehr als patent eingetrümmert, macht dauernd Dampf, hat eine passende textliche Klammer (dabei geht viel um Schrecken des Krieges und der Nazis) und ein schickes, von Basser de Briun angefertigtes rotes Ruinen-Cover. Das ist alles in allem ein wirklich gelungenes Geschenk zum eigenen 25. Geburtstag, herzlichen Glückwunsch! Was die Sache noch cooler macht, sind die mehr als gelungenen Coverversionen von MASSACREs „Dawn of Eternity“ (genial) und DARK ANGELs „Burning of Sodom“ (superdick), die es als Boni zusammen mit dem eigenen Song “And Jesus Wept“ (von 2006) extra frei Haus dazu gibt. Das Album ist sicherlich kein sonderlich außergewöhnliches, aber ein mehr als gelungenes und irgendwie – super-sympathisch.

Είχα σχεδόν 5 χρόνια να ακούσω κάποια νέα από τους Ολλανδούς Death Metallers Thanatos, αφού η τελευταία τους δουλειά είχε κυκλοφορήσει το 2004 (σ.σ. Undead, Unholy, Divine – Black Lotus). Από τον Stephan Gebedi (σ.σ. φωνή/κιθάρα) είχα νέα του χάρη στο πολύ καλό album που κυκλοφόρησε με τους Hail Of Bullets, οι οποίοι επισκέφθηκαν προ δύο μηνών την χώρα μας. Να λοιπόν που μετά από πέντε χρόνια σιωπής επέστρεψαν με ένα νέο δίσκο ονόματι “Justified Genocide”. Θα μπορούσα να πω ότι το πέμπτο δισκογραφικό βήμα τους είναι αρκετά καλό δίχως όμως να καταφέρνει να σου πάρει τα μυαλά. Είναι μια πάρα πολύ καλή και αξιόλογη προσπάθεια, η οποία θα κερδίσει σίγουρα τους φίλους της μπάντας. Οι συνθέσεις στην σε γενικές γραμμές είναι καλές ενώ πόντους κερδίζει σαφώς το ότι ο Dan Swano έβαλε το χέρι του στην μίξη και το mastering του δίσκου. Τέλος αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η μπάντα έχει συμπεριλάβει στο δίσκο της δυο διασκευές, μία πάνω στο “Dawn Of Eternity” των Massacre & μία πάνω στο “The Burning Of Sodom” των Dark Angel. Αξίζει να το πάρετε.

So here it finally is. The fifth Thanatos album. It took these Dutch veterans six years, but mostly due to label problems and other unforseen circumstances, so I think we might be able to forgive them for that. With some time off in between in the 90's this also marks Thanatos' 25th annniversary, so even more reasons to celebrate.    Let's start with saying that they certainly never sounded better. The album was recorded at Excess Studios in Rotterdam and mixed by the legendary Dan Swanö, and it makes up for a great display of raw death-thrash blasting through your speakers in great aural quality. And when I say death-thrash, I don't mean the Swedish sound which is so prominent in the scene these days. This is pure old-school death with a healthy dose of bay-area thrash and speed-metal to boot. The two covers on this album (Massacres 'Dawn Of Eternity' and Dark Angels 'The Burning Of Sodom') illustrate nicely where Thanatos comes from. It's nice to see and hear of course that the old guard can still kick some serious ass and step on the gas like there's no tomorrow.

So while I'm not really hearing any new things, this album is Thanatos at its best.  Furious death-thrash, masterfully executed, great sounding and with some good songs. I'm not hearing any classics though and that's maybe my only gripe.

Every great death-metal record has a certain amount of 'catchiness' to it with a few defining riffs and I'm not really hearing those here, except for maybe the Morbid Angel-ish main riff in 'Upwards Spirtual Evolution'. Everything mostly blazes by in a classic chaotic manner. That said, this is a classic display of a style of death-metal which has been gone for too long if you ask me. So if you're looking for some great sounding classic death-thrash, this is an album you need to get. It's bound to get some heads banging.

Eindelijk weer een band die aankomt met een titel die de schenen van de gemiddelde fatsoensrakker bont en blauw schopt. De andere voet is voor de achterwerken van de metalheads bedoeld. Want wederom hebben we een juweeltje te pakken van de Rotterdamse Death / Thrash-grootmeesters onder leiding van Stephan Gebedi. Het gaspedaal wordt keihard ingetrapt en ook weer losgelaten op de momenten dat het moet en eigenlijk is alles zoals het hoort. Is er dan een minpunt? Ja, een. Want op zich heeft ieder weldenkend mens snel genoeg door dat de heren tekstueel een verslag zonder oordeel brengen. Toch zit er een extra vel bij de bio om de teksten uit te leggen. Dat is jammer aangezien het overkomt als een excuus vooraf. Juist nu controversiele bands die het uitermate goed bedoelen en shockeren om hun statement kracht bij te zetten in de minderheid zijn. En dat is net zo hard nodig als een klapper van een plaat afleveren.

One of the oldest Dutch death metalbands has finished his latest record. After releasing the first album from Hail Of Bullets with Martin van Drunen on vocals it’s guitarist Stephan Gebédi that takes on the guttural vocal job once again in his own band.

‘Justified Genocide’ has become a strong album with countless influences from traditional thrash metal and elements from earlier Thanatos records. I wouldn’t dare saying that this album tops a classic like ‘Emerging From The Netherworlds’, but the cd is definitely one of the best records released by this band so far.

Strong and powerful compositions like ‘They Feed On Fear’ and the musically very interesting ‘The Devil’s Triangle’ dominate the record. The band shows their love and gratitude for the elder proto-death metal Gods by covering ‘Dawn Of Eternity’ from Massacre. Still a great song. Production wise this is an excellent effort, since no other Thanatos album ever sounded this tight and at the same time so lively.

The fans of the band and furious death thrash metal in general don’t have to worry, since this is a must-have for them. Those exciting guitar riffs, fast drumming and ofcourse those bestial vocals, it’s all the way it should be. There’s also beautiful artwork to be found, which completes the package nicely.

Eén van de oudste death metalbands uit Nederland heeft een nieuwe plaat klaar. Na het avontuurtje met Hail Of Bullets brult de obstinate Stephan Gebédi weer ouderwets hard in de microfoon. ‘Justified Genocide’ is een sterke plaat geworden met talloze verwijzingen naar zowel traditionele thrash metal als ook de kenmerkende death metalstijl die op oudere albums werd gespeeld.

Ik zou niet durven zeggen dat de cd beter is dan de klassieker ‘Emerging From The Netherworlds’, maar het album behoort zeker tot de betere platen die het gezelschap heeft afgeleverd. Sterke rampestampers als ‘They Feed On Fear’ en het muzikaal interessante ‘The Devil’s Triangle’ domineren de plaat en de liefde voor oude proto-death metal wordt nog even geuit door de cover van het Massacre nummer ‘Dawn Of Eternity’. Leuke versie trouwens.

De productie is tevens een sterk punt, want nog nooit klonk een Thanatos plaat zo strak en tegelijkertijd toch zo levendig. De liefhebbers van de band en vette death thrash in het algemeen kunnen weer met gezonde spoed naar de platenboer, want de plaat rost weer heerlijk.

De gitaarriffs, rappe drums en uiteraard de beestachtige zang, het is allemaal dik in orde. Het prima artwork maakt deze uitstekende release vervolgens helemaal af.

Thanatos is a band from Netherlands, formed in 1984 and has five released albums, being the fifth album "Justified Genocide", bringing in the compositions whole metallic knowledge that the band acquired during the years... and these knowledge are evident in the great quality of the songs. "Justified Genocide" is a Thrash Metal album, but with Death Metal elements that increase a merciless brutality in the final result. The songs don't have a lot of likeness some with the other ones, therefore the band feeds the sonorous structure with an incredible variety of riffs and variations of weight with velocity. "Justified Genocide" is a potent album that shows us through an excellent recording an impressive sonority. The timbre of the instruments has a sound that allows the band to show the versatility of the compositions, therefore in the moments of extreme brutality the band reaches Death Metal limits through furious Thrash Metal riffs. In the moments of weight the band gets to sound with intensity while sonorous aggressions are delineated by strong sonorities. The sonorous variations and tempo changes happen naturally, therefore the potent riffs converge for intense bases and the bases converge for riffs successions and more riffs that explode the tympanums. "Justified Genocide" is an album that prevails a Thrash Metal wrought in the fury of stormy riffs and in the insanity of a cataclysmal Death Metal. In some moments you think that is hearing a Thrash Metal band with Death Metal influences, but in other moments you feel the ears a Death Metal band with Thrash Metal influences, therefore the versatility of the songs becomes "Justified Genocide" an album of extreme, sounding like sonorous genocide, diluting in the voracious riffs the musical logic to perpetuate the Thrash Death Metal fury! And when you think that the album is over... prepares the ears for the cover "The Burning of Sodom" (Dark Angel). Destruction, chaos and creation! I recommend! Excellent!

Schon 25 Jahre existieren “Thanatos” aus den Niederlanden und sind seitdem eher Undergroundfreaks ein Begriff. Was äußerst bedauerlich ist, denn die Jungs sind das, was man im allgemeinen als völlig unterbewertet bezeichnet. Stilistisch zwischen Thrash und Death zuhause. Wobei man auch Hardcore und Punkeinflüssen in keinster Form abgeneigt ist. Nun, das neue Album des Vierers ist dabei eine Granate, wo jeder einzelne Song sofort zündet und alles wegsprengt. Schon angefangen beim Opener „They feed on Fear“, bis über das supergeil abgehende „Justified Genocide“ oder „Apostels of Damnation“. Hier haut jeder Song voll auf die Fresse und hinterlässt nichts als verbrannte Erde. Thematisch geht es hauptsächlich um die Greueltaten im zweiten Weltkrieg, ohne diese jedoch zu verherrlichen, was man auf der Bandhomepage auch nochmals ausführlich erklärt. Doch auch andere Diktatoren der jüngeren Vergangenheit bekommen hier ihr Fett weg. Alles in allem ist „Justified Genocide“ ein Album, welches in jeder Hinsicht zu begeistern weiß und der Band hoffentlich endlich mal die Aufmerksamkeit verleiht, die sie schon lange verdient hat.

Trash ´til Death dürfte wohl das richtige Motto bei Thanatos sein. Gänzlich kompromisslos wird aus allen Rohren gefeuert, ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste. Innerhalb von Millisekunden wird man in die Trash-Hölle schlechthin geschleudert. Aggressives Geschrei, etwas hysterisches Gitarregeschredder, von leicht angedeuteten Disharmonien durchzogene Soli und ein Schlagwerk bei dem einem nur noch der sprichwörtliche "Knüppel aus dem Sack" einfällt. Einzig eine Kleinigkeit mindert die Freude am aktuellen Output der Undergroundveteranen etwas - nach kürzester Zeit hat man das Gefühl, dass man nach dem ersten Song eigentlich schon das ganze Album kennt. Es gibt wenige Songs, die wirklich herausstechen. Einer ist jedoch "Destruction. Chaos. Creation", eine beklemmende, düstere Granate, die nach einem leicht melancholischen Einstieg sowas von abgeht, dass es schon nicht mehr feierlich ist. Ansonsten liefert man ein qualitativ solides Trash-Album ab, dass durchaus Freude macht. Jedoch wird sich der ambitionierten Musikfreund unter Garantie am Sound von "Justified Genocide" stören. Vor allem die Gitarren bilden einen Einheitsbrei, der bei den heutigen technischen Möglichkeiten eigentlich zu umgehen ist. Im Großen und Ganzen dürfte jeder Trash-Maniac hier ein Ohr riskieren können, aber keine Erleuchtung erwarten dürfen.

Thanatos aus Rotterdam wurden bereits 1984 von Sänger und Gitarrist Stephan Gebèdi gegründet und dürften somit eine der dienstältesten Extrem Metal-Bands Hollands sein. Allerdings standen sie immer in der zweiten Reihe hinter ihren wesentlich erfolgreicheren Landsleuten Pestilence und Asphyx. Ihre ersten wirklich guten Alben "Emerging From The Netherworlds" und "Realm of Ecstacy" aus den frühen Neunzigern besitzen in Insiderkreisen zwar Kultstatus, aber als Klassiker würde ich sie nicht bezeichnen, dafür waren sie doch zu unspektakulär.

Von ganz anderem Format war für meinen Geschmack das im Jahr 2000 erschienene "Angelic Encounters", das mit einem runderneuerten Line-up eingespielt wurde und vollends überzeugen konnte. Ebenso wie der Nachfolger "Undead. Unholy. Divine" von 2004, bei dem sich das Personenkarussell erneut gedreht hatte. Leider hält sich der Bekanntheitsgrad der Band noch immer in Grenzen. Erstaunlicherweise sind die Nebenprojekte (wenn man überhaupt von solchen sprechen kann) einiger Mitglieder ungleich erfolgreicher. So zocken Bandkopf Stephan Gebédi und Gitarrist Paul Baayens bei den Death Metal Senkrechtstartern Hail Of Bullets, und Drummer Yuri Rinkel ist mit Melechesh sehr gut im Geschäft.

Trotzdem haben es Thanatos geschafft nebenbei noch ihr fünftes Album in fünfundzwanzig Jahren (und bei vier verschiedenen Labels, Rekord verdächtig) einzutrümmern. Hoffentlich erhält das Quartett endlich die längst verdiente Aufmerksamkeit. Der neue Longplayer ist, wie die beiden Vorgänger, mehr als hörenswert ausgefallen und zudem absolut konkurrenzfähig. Freunde derber und zugleich anspruchsvoller Klänge sollten "Justified Genocide" auf alle Fälle eine Chance geben, anstatt ihre Zeit und ihr Geld für maßlos überbewertete Acts wie zum Beispiel Legion Of The Damned zu verplempern, die sich stilistisch ja grob in eine ähnliche Richtung bewegen.

Thanatos haben weit mehr zu bieten als simple 'Hau drauf'-Mucke. Seit Paul Baayens als Sologitarrist und Songwriter dazu gestoßen ist, haben sich der Band ganz neue musikalische Möglichkeiten eröffnet. Das stilistische Spektrum bewegt sich von ultraderben Oldschool Thrash-Hämmern wie "They Feed On Fear" oder "Justified Genocide" bis hin zu brutalem, vom technischen Ami Death Metal beeinflussten Songs wie "The Devil Triangle", "The Netherworld" oder dem düsteren, schleppenden "Apostles Of Damnation", die mich alle sehr an Morbid Angel zu "Altars Of Madness"-Zeiten oder auch "Immolation" erinnern.

Auch die geile Coverversion des Massacre-Klassikers "Dawn of Eternity" ist überaus gelungen ausgefallen. Das gesamte Material ist durchgängig absolut interessant und abwechslungsreich arrangiert, wird zu keiner Sekunde langweilig und besticht durch seine erstklassige technische Umsetzung. Besonders Paul Baayens weiß durch sein tolles, facettenreiches Spiel immer wieder Akzente zu setzen. Gekrönt wird der Silberling noch durch eine Neueinspielung des alten "Realm Of Ecstacy"-Gassenhauers "And Jesus Wept", sowie einer weiteren Coverversion von Dark Angels "The Burning Of Sodom", die beide bereits vor einigen Jahren als Vinyl Single erschienen.

Alles in allem ist "Justified Genocide" ein leckerer Gourmet Happen geworden, den sich jeder Fan, der auf Thrash mit massiver Death Metal Schlagseite steht, auf der Zunge zergehen lassen sollte. Es müsste echt mit dem Leibhaftigen zugehen, wenn Thanatos mit dieser Scheibe nicht endlich punkten.

THANATOS zählen mit zu den "Urvätern" der niederländischen Brachial-Metal-Bewegung, wurden bereits 1984 gegründet und konnten in den Jahren bis zur vorübergehenden Auflösung 1992 nicht weniger als sechs Demotapes, zwei Alben und eine Live-Dokument auf der Haben-Seite verbuchen. Ein überaus imposanter Backkatalog, der den Niederländern allerdings dennoch nicht vielmehr als "gehobenen Underground-Status" einbringen konnte. Eine kleine, aber dafür getreue Fanbase konnte sich die Truppe damit aber fraglos erspielen, so daß der Name THANATOS auch nicht so schnell wieder in Vergessenheit zu geraten drohte. Gegen Ende des letzten Jahrtausends gab es für die Fangemeinde schließlich sogar reichlich Grund zum Jubeln, denn Gitarrist und Sänger Stephan Gebedi verspürte das dringende Bedürfnis, THANATOS erneut zum Leben zu erwecken und es mit dieser Band nochmals zu versuchen. Mittlerweile ist er das einzig verbliebene Gründungsmitglied, hält allerdings stilistisch sehr wohl am ursprünglich eingeschlagenen Weg fest und kredenzt auch auf dem aktuellen Dreher »Justified Genocide« eine gewaltige Dosis satten Thrash Metal der brachialen Art in Kombination mit nicht minder brutalem Death Metal. Nach der erneuten Wiederbelebung des Unternehmens konnten die Niederländer beim damals recht aktiven griechischen Label BLACK LOTUS RECORDS unterkommen und an sich hätte diese Liaison vorliegendes Album auch schon vor längerer Zeit in Umlauf bringen sollen, doch der plötzliche Bankrott der Plattenfirma zwang die Band dazu, die Aufnahmen quasi "einzufrieren", so daß wir uns erst jetzt - anläßlich des 25. Wiegenfestes der Band - an diesem Album ergötzen dürfen.

Allerdings merkt man »Justified Genocide« zu keinem Zeitpunkt eventuell anlagerten Staub an, wie man ebenso auch vernehmen kann, daß sich Stephan nebst runderneuerter Mannschaft einen feuchten Kehricht um eventuelle angesagte Versionen von Metal geschert hat und uns stattdessen ein amtliches, knietief in der "alten Schule" fundamentiertes Album voll grobschlächtigem Thrash Metal kredenzt. Zwar kommen hinsichtlich des Riffings und der Spieltechnik sehr wohl auch jene Zeitgenossen auf ihre Rechnung, die sich ansonsten weniger an Derbheiten ergötzen können, "musikalische Feinmechanik" klingt aber dennoch definitiv anders.

Aufgrund der Thematik ihres aktuellen Werkes, auf dem unterschiedlichste Greueltaten des 20. Jahrhunderts abgehandelt werden, kommen mir spontan HAIL OF BULLETS in den Sinn, auch wenn sich THANATOS nicht ganz so spezialisiert präsentieren und das Thema allgemeiner gestalten, ihr Unterfangen im Endeffekt aber dennoch auf ähnliche Weise präsentieren. Dazu muß erwähnt werden, daß nicht nur Stephan selbst, sondern auch Paul Baayens, sein Mitstreiter an der Klampfe, auch in Diensten der genannten Landsmänner stehen, wodurch Anknüpfungspunkte zu HAIL OF BULLETS nur noch schwer von der Hand zu weisen sind, auch wenn sich THANATOS im Endeffekt deutlich früher mit der Thematik befaßt hatten. Musikalisch dagegen bestehen keinerlei Verbindungen. Auf »Justified Genocide« wird zumeist im hohen Tempo-Bereich losgelegt, doch die Herrschaften von THANATOS wissen sehr wohl, auch durch fette Midtempo-Grooves und sogar vereinzelte eingestreute Stampfer Druck zu erzeugen und zudem auch für Abwechslung zu sorgen, auch wenn die Basis zu jeder Sekunde zu vernehmen ist. Neben den neun, ohnehin schon mächtigen Abrißbirnen aus ihrer eigenen Feder, huldigen die Herrschaften obendrein auch noch unvergessenen Größen der Brutal-Metal-Historie, was ihnen zusätzlich Sympathiepunkte bringt.

Als ob ihre Eigenkompositionen nicht schon für ausreichend Freude innerhalb ihrer Klientel sorgen würden, bekommen die Zuhörer auch noch amtlich drückende Coverversionen von ›Dawn Of Eternity‹ (MASSACRE) und ›The Burning Of Sodom‹ (DARK ANGEL) vor den Latz geknallt, mit denen THANATOS nicht nur Geschmack beweisen, sondern aufgrund der tadellosen Umsetzung auch spieltechnische Kompetenz. Letztgenannter Hammer aus dem Vermächtnis der Amis ist zwar (zusammen mit dem "Band-Oldie" ›And Jesus Wept‹) bereits im Jahr 2006 auf einer Vinyl-EP veröffentlicht worden, aus den erwähnten "Aktualitätsgründen" wurden beide Tracks allerdings auch als Bonus-Material auf dem aktuellen Silberling verewigt.

The grand old band and merchants of Dutch death metal has now returned with their 5th full length album 'Justified Genocide', 9 of their own neckbreaking and eviler than thou tracks and 2 ass kicking cover tunes in form of 'The Burning Of Sodom' originally by Dark Angel and 'Dawn Of Eternity' originally by Massacre. Both tunes are made well and kicks ass in good old Thanatos fashion!

The album is also a good blast of Thanatos styled death metal, no shit here. Heavy and crushing guitar riffs paints the sky, while the drums are pounding unmerciful below the concrete cutting guitar tracks, midtempo doublebass and a nice use of the cymbals and toms, with a few ups and downs in tempo. The rumbling bass, keeping the rhythm straight, though almost too hidden below the grinding guitars most of the time. The trademark growl from Gebédi, a nice mix between old school crossover vocals and a deep growl from hell, is working as good as ever, and nice with variation as in the, Thanatos world, uptempo track 'Upwards Spiritual Evolution'.

If you have been on the Thanatos train since you can remember, then you won't regret buying or checking this album out, Thanatos is as Thanatos as ever, with a few new sparks here and there. A strong death metal album from the Dutch quartet showing that they still have their place on the scene and still is one of Holland's strongest entities, when it comes to making death metal that hits the nerve.

Al 25 jaar in het vak zitten, kwalitatief goede cd's uitbrengen en dan miserie hebben om je cd uit te brengen. Gelukkig zag Deity Down Records de kwaliteiten in van Thanatos en brachten ze terecht deze "Justified genocide" uit. Niemand zal het zich beklagen. Thanatos blijft zijn eigen roots hondstrouw, het is alsof de tijd al die jaren stil heeft blijven staan. Knap en diep respect voor zoveel volhardendheid. De fan weet alvast waar hij zich moet aan verwachten, namelijk uitstekende death en thrash metal. Persoonlijke favoriet is "Destruction.Chaos.Creation", wat een sterke opbouw, wat een klassesong. Laat ik echter de andere nummers niet vergeten die ook van hoogstaande kwaliteit zijn, hoewel op de tweede helft van de cd enkele zwakkere momenten te vinden zijn, dan denk ik vooral aan "Upwards spiritual evolution".  Opvallend is "Dawn of eternity" van Massacre. Als ik dit nummer hoor besef ik eens te meer hoe goed Massacre wel niet is. Dit zonder afbreuk aan Thanatos te doen, hun cover is uitermate geslaagd. De productie is helder en zonder veel bombast, precies wat Thanatos nodig heeft opdat het geen chaotische brij zou worden. Dit is de zoveelste klasse cd dit jaar uit Nederland. Hup Oranje hup!

Illusztris névnek számít az 1984-ben alakult holland Thanatos. Két kultikus lemez is köthető a nevükhöz az „Emerging from the Netherworlds” és a „Realm Of Ecstasy”. Az ősi thrash/death metalban utazó zenekar mindig is a technikásabb megoldások híve volt, lemezeik is ennek szellemében születtek. Kitűnően gyúrták össze olyan bandák zenei világát, mint például Kreator, Bolt Thrower, Death Angel, Morbid Angel. Sajnos 1992-ben feloszlott a banda, de 1999-ben új életre kelt Stephan Gebedi énekes/gitárosnak köszönhetően. Igaz közben a 2006-ban alakult Hail of Bullets nevezetű formációban is játszik. Többek között a szintén Thanatos-os Paul Baayens-el, aki például jelenleg a másik legenda Asphyx-ben is érdekelt. Újjáalakulásuk óta most jelenik meg a harmadik, egész pályájukat nézve pedig az ötödik alkotás a Justified Genocide.

A nyolc, plusz két feldolgozást és egy bónusz dalt tartalmazó lemezen igazából nem változtattak a jól bevált recepteken, igazi Thanatos szerzemények sorjáznak egymás után. Ha egy mondatban kéne belesűrítenem a dolgot - akkor ez egy olyan lemez, amin egységesen magas a színvonal. Szinte egy percre sem pihenhet a hallgató, olyan jó témákkal pakolták tele a korongot. Még mindig azt mondom, hogy a thrash metal jobban kiérződik a dalok zenei vázán, de természetesen a death-es megoldások is közel állnak a bandához. Itt-ott még néha a Death zenekar hatásait is érezni lehet. Igazi zenei pusztítást hajtanak végre a lemezen, melyben mégsem fárad bele az ember, inkább elégedetten csettintget micsoda nyakatekert és mégis őrlős zúzós riffeket hall. Más banda a fél karját odaadná, ha ilyen összetett témákat tudnának írni. Persze nem kell mérhetetlen öncélú tekerésekre gondolni, hanem nagyon finoman oldják meg a technikás részeket is, és persze az old-school jelleg végig ott lebeg a dalokban.

A szólók hallatán a gitárosok kitűnő zenei képzettségről tesznek tanúbizonyságot. Hát nem hiába, nem ma kezdték a szakmát. Nótákat, mint említettem felesleges kiemelni a két kitűnő feldolgozás „Massacre”, ”Dark Angel” választása sem a véletlen műve. A korong hangzása is több mint ígéretes, megfelel a mai kornak, de mégis a régiség szellemét megpróbálja megőrizni.

Aki fogékony a durvább zenei stílusra és még nem hallotta a holland mészárosokat, az bátran kezdheti az ismerkedést ezzel a koronggal. Aki pedig tudja mi az a Thanatos, annak úgysem kell mondanom, hogy mitől jó ez a lemez. Kérem szépen itt nincs szó semmi öreges megfáradt nosztalgiázásról, ez a banda él és virul és brutálisabb, mint valaha. Úgy égnek a tűztől, mint a borítón a város. Rakjátok be a „Justified Genocide” és hallgassátok 2009 eddigi legjobb thrash/death anyagát.

The name of Dutch Thanatos formed in 1984 can be taken as an illustrious one. They made two cult albums, namely Emerging from the Netherworlds and Realm of Ecstasy. The band, walking the path of ancient thrash/death metal, has always been a devotee of more technical stuff and created records in that spirit. They blended excellently the musical world of bands like Kreator, Bolt Thrower, Death Angel, Morbid Angel. Unfortunately, they disbanded in 1992, but thanks to guitarist/vocalist Stephan Gebedi the band resurrected in 1999. Meanwhile, he’s also playing in Hail Of Bullets which was formed in 2006, along with Paul Baayens who is also a member of Thanatos and also take part in Asphyx now. Since their reformation, Justified Genocide is their third, and in total it is the fifth album.

On this record including eight tracks, two covers and a bonus song, they have not changed their formula, these are true Thanatos compositions. If I am to summarize the whole thing in one sentence, I’d say it’s a record of uniformly high quality. There’s not a moment of rest for the listener, the themes are so great. I still think that thrash metal is more dominant in the musical structures but there are death metal things also. Here and there the influence of Death can also be felt. There’s a real musical devastation going on on the record which does not turn into boredom but it is satisfying with its complex yet grinding, crushing riffs. Most bands would die for such themes. Of course, do not think of senseless things but they are very delicate with the technical parts as well and the oldschool feeling is still in the tracks.

The guitarists are also great in the solos in which they show their great musical skills. Well they are no beginners. As said, it does not make sense to pick out songs, and the choice of two covers, being Massacre and Dark Angel, is also not by chance. The production is more than adequate, it corresponds to today’s requirements but still carries the old spirit.

Those susceptible to rawer genres and have not hear the Dutch slaughter so far can get familiar with this very album. And those who already know Thanatos need no justification of why the record is good. Well, we do not have here old men’s nostalgia party, the band is alive and well, and is brutal than ever before. They are as fiery as the burning city in the cover picture. Just play Justified Genocide and listen to 2009’s best thrash/death stuff so far.

Wenn Siegmund Freud gewusst hätte, dass sich nach dem von ihm entdeckten Todestrieb, eben „Thanatos“, in seiner Psychoanalyse auch eine Metal-Band benennen würde, wie hätte er wohl reagiert? Wahrscheinlich mit gepflegtem Headbangen! Oder der Gott Thanatos aus der griechischen Mythologie musste als Namensgeber herhalten – Der Gott des Todes! Würde auch passen, denn die vier Niederländer metzeln hier gnadenlos alles nieder, was sich ihnen in den Weg stellt. Eine ruhige Passage? Sogleich mit einer Blast-Beat-Attacke vernichtet. Gitarrensolo? Wird noch kurz auf das Schlachtfeld geführt, dann aber schon mit derben Thrash-Metal erledigt. „Justified Genocide“ ist ein Thrash/Death-Metal Monster. Seit 1984 (Undergroundszene - erstes Album 1999) treiben die Rotterdammer nun schon ihr Unwesen. Diese Erfahrung hört man den Songs auch an. Gleich der Opener They feed on fear zeigt einem, wo die Reise hingeht. Prügelorgien, Riffmonster, rauchiger Gesang. Soundtechnisch ist das Album gut abgemischt, man hört jeden Bassschlag oder auch jede angeschlagene Basssaite. Gitarre und Gesang sowieso. Auf ihrer Webseite geben sie als Einflüsse Bands wie „Venom“, „Slayer“ oder „Death“ an. Passt wie die Faust aufs Auge, wobei ich beim Gesang phasenweise an „Unleashed“ erinnert werde. Aber genug von Vergleichen, denn diese haben „Thanatos“ gar nicht nötig, kreieren sie doch ihren eigenen Stil. Highlights auf diesem Album zu nennen wird schwer, so gut ist jeder einzelne Song. Ok, das sehr geile und schnelle Cover von The Burning of Sodom von „Dark Angel“ als Rausschmeißer könnte hier stehen. Oder Destruction. Chaos. Creation – hier treibt die Doublebass den ruhigen Aufbau des Songs vor sich her, bevor dann wieder geprügelt wird. Dann noch das Cover – eine völlig zerstörte Stadt, eingetaucht in roten Feuer/Rauchschwaden. Not bad, not bad. Ob Freud das hat kommen sehen?

Die Niederländer von Thanatos gehören auch zur hartnäckigen Sorte, existiert die Band doch schon seit 1984. Anfang der Neunziger zog sich die Band vom aktuellen Geschehen zurück, wurde aber kurz vor dem Jahrtausendwechsel von Gründungsmitglied Stephan Gebédi wieder reanimiert. Mittlerweile auch bei Hail Of Bullets unter gekommen, holte dieser seinen Kollegen Paul Baayens gleich mit ins Boot. Die Holländer mixen soliden Thrash und Death Metal zu einer explosiven Mischung, und klingen dabei schön Old School. Da merkt man schon, dass zu den Einflüssen eher die frühen Helden wie Slayer, Kreator, Death oder Possesed gehören. Elf flotte Tracks hat man eingespielt, wobei zwei davon Cover Songs sind. Als da wären "Dawn Of Eternity" von Massacre, dass die Jungs wirklich gut rüber bringen, wenn es auch nicht ganz den räudigen Charm des Originals hat, sowie "The Burning Of Sodom" von den seligen Dark Angel, welches "Justified Genocide" einen würdigen Abschluss verpasst. Wer sich also die Gehörgänge mal wieder richtig frei blasen lassen will, liegt hier richtig. Cooles Teil...

Bereits im Jahre 1984 tauchte der Name THANATOS in der damals noch überschaubaren Metalszene auf. Zwischen 1992 und 1999 wurde dann die Band nach den ersten beiden Alben "Emerging From The Netherworlds" und "Realm Of Ecstasy" auf Eis gelegt. Es folgten nach der Reunion die beiden Full-Length-Scheiben "Angelic Encounters" und "Undead.Unholy.Divine", um nun, wieder fünf Jahre später "Justified Genocide" auf den Markt zu bringen. Es stellt sich hierbei die Frage, ob die Welt auf ein weiteres Produkt in Sachen Death/Thrash Metal gewartet hat oder Mainman Stephan Gebédi einfach die Erfolgswelle seiner anderen Band HAIL OF BULLETS nutzen wollte, um mit THANATOS noch ein paar CDs mehr zu verkaufen.

Denn der Death/Thrash-Metal der Holländer ist nicht mehr als durchschnittlich. Mit einem unüberhörbaren old school-Touch versehen prügelt sich das Quartett, dem auch Yuri Rinkel von MELECHESH angehört, durch "Justified Genocide". Ab und an ziehen THANATOS die Handbremse und ähneln dabei leider zu sehr ASPHYX oder eben HAIL OF BULLETS. Aber gerade dann, wenn die vier Musiker im Midtempo rumpeln, wissen sie am besten zu gefallen. Doch Eigenständigkeit ist etwas anderes. Unterhaltsam sind zudem die beiden enthaltenen Coverversionen von MASSACRE ("Dawn Of Eternity") und DARK ANGEL ("The Burning Of Sodom"). Doch wie schon erwähnt sind die Eigenkreationen zwar nett anzuhören, aber zwingend im Schrank braucht man "Justified Genocide" nicht stehen zu haben.

Die holländischen THANATOS feiern zum 25. Bandjubiläum mit „Justified Genocide" ein heftiges Thrash-Fest. Thrash ist ja ein Stil, der doch relativ eng gefassten Regeln folgt und THANATOS sind Verfechter der Reinheitslehre, wobei das deutsche Reinheitsgebot der DESTRUCTION-Schule ebenso Beachtung findet wie die Hanneman-King-Gedächnismedaille.

THANATOS gehen mit entsprechend hohem Aggressivitätslevel zu Werke, das durch den heiseren Gesang noch unterstützt wird. Was die meisten Punks wohl überraschen wird, ist die Tatsache, dass Thrash Metal eine linksorientierte, sozialkritische Musikrichtung ist, und so behandeln THANATOS verschiedene heiße Eisen, wie die NS-Zeit und die Rolle der Kirche in dieser, wobei sie pikanterweise die Position des Bösen einnehmen.

Um Missverständnissen vorzubeugen, werden auf der Webseite gleich klare Statements gegen Nazis und Konsorten abgegeben. Recht so.

"Our lyrics simply deal with either historical events or morbid fantasies, but since touching upon certain topics already seems reason enough for certain people to brand a band as Nazis - which we are of course and obviously not! - we've chosen to explain some of the lyrics on our new album "Justified Genocide", so here we go please follow this link".

Wenn die Frage nach den dienstältesten Extremmetalbands Europas gestellt wird, dann tauchen etliche Bands als Antwort auf…aber THANATOS bestimmt nicht! Die seit 1984 existierende Band (allerdings ist nur noch Sänger Stephan Gebédi aus der Urbesetzung übrig geblieben) veröffentlicht mit "Justified Genocide" ihr fünftes Album (das dritte nach der Reaktivierung 1999), das nahtlos an die Klasse der Vorgänger anknüpfen kann. Die Niederländer servieren ihr Steak nach wie vor blutig, der Death/Thrash ist nichts für die Kinderstube. Allein die beiden Coversongs "Dawn Of Eternity" von MASSACRE und "The Burning Of Sodom" von DARK ANGEL beweisen Geschmack, zumal deren Umsetzung gelungen ist. THANATOS überzeugen durch eine komplexe Gitarrenarbeit (Paul Baayens gehört schließlich auch zum Lineup der reformierten ASPHYX), die immer wieder in fast SLAYER kompatible Soli mündet. Der Gitarrensound kann sowohl dreckig als auch melodisch sein, ist aber immer aggressiv und direkt. Hervorheben können sich THANATOS durch ihre Wendungen und Tempiwechsel innerhalb der Songs, die das Album interessant und langlebig machen. Mitunter geht es auf "Justified Genocide" leicht chaotisch progressiv zu, wobei der Band immer die Kontrolle über das Handeln obliegt. THANATOS bauen in ihren Tracks auf Druck und Vehemenz, zocken so unterstützt durch das räudige und teilweise Angst einflößende Organ ihres Sängers locker und lässig ein Album herunter, das die Konkurrenz alt aussehen lässt. Stark!

Thanatos is probably the first and oldest Dutch extreme metal band still alive. They released a couple of full-lengths in the beginning of nineties, but disbanded in 1992. They made a comeback in 1999 and have since released three albums of which “Justified Genocide” is the newest.

Featuring members from Hail Of Bullets, Funeral Winds and Melechesh, the band really knows what they want and how to get it. This is thrashing old-school death metal of highest order and even though the music isn’t too original, it works pretty damn well. “Justified Genocide” is a much tighter effort than “Angelic Encounters” and the songs are better than on “Undead.Unholy.Divine”. Dan Swanö mixed the album, so the sound is also very clear, sharp and top-notch.

The songs range from fast thrash metal assaults like “March Of The Infidels” to slower stuff like atmospheric and groovy “Apostles Of Damnation”. There are no clean guitars or keyboards, just old-school aggression, brutal vocals and some gloomy melodies. Nothing much to tell really, since this stuff isn’t original or particularly challenging, but it’s still very enjoyable and should be checked out by every death/thrash fanatic out there.

There are also two cover tracks. “The Burning Of Sodom” by Dark Angel and “Dawn Of Eternity” by the mighty Massacre. Both versions follow the original and are well done, but I have to say I enjoyed the band’s own stuff much more. Thanatos is still very much alive and kicking.

No i mamy piąty w karierze krążek Thanatosa; w końcu można by rzec, na "Justified Genocide" przyszło poczekać nam parę lat. Opłaciło się jednak i to bardzo, bowiem tym razem, Panowie postawiali na znacznie większą intensywność i brutalność materiału, aniżeli miało to miejsce przy okazji "Undead. Unholy. Divine." Poprzedni krążek Szwedzkiej załogi z pewnością do słabych zaliczyć się nie da, jednak był nieco z byt miły w odbiorze. Sprawę całkowicie zmienia nowa produkcja Thanatos, płytka kopie od samego początku aż mordka się cieszy. W pełni chamski i nie wymuskany materiał, bez ozdobników i fantastycznej produkcji. Z początku wydawać by się mogło, że wręcz nie przystępny, może nawet nieco zbyt chaotyczny. Co ciekawe, przy kolejnych podejściach, te początkowe zarzuty wobec płyty stają się jej największymi atutami. Tak chyba bywa z albumami naprawdę dobrymi, trzeba poświęcić im nieco czasu, by móc się w nie wbić a następnie po kawałku rozkładać i delektować. A jest czym bez dwóch zdań!

Z tych jedenastu kawałków zawartych na "Justified Genocide" mi najbardziej do gustu przypadły: otwierający płytę "They Feed on Fear" i następujący zaraz po nim "Destruction.Chaos.Creation" obydwa kawałki wprost miażdżą swoją potęgą, "Dawn of Eternity" fantastyczny cover Massacre, death/tharshowa jazda bez trzymanki, "Upwards Spiritual Evolution" konstrukcyjnie zdrowo pokopany numer, oraz utwór tytułowy - "Justified Genocide", ostry i konkretny, sama esencja krążka.

Na koniec dodam tylko, że to chyba najcięższa i najbardziej brutalna płyta jaką nagrał w swojej karierze Thanatos. Nie przegapcie tego, bo wstyd był by.

This Is Thrash!

Questo è un cd didattico, nel senso che è un cd che andrebbe fatto ascoltare a un buon 90% delle band che hanno l’ardire di riportare in auge il thrash, senza possedere la statura artistica necessaria a compiere un compito tanto gravoso. I Thanatos sono dei vecchi volponi del genere che, dopo una prima militanza nei primi anni ’90, si sciolgono per ritornare nuovamente all’ attacco grazie al cantante/ chitarrista Stephan Gebédi nel 1999.

Certamente si possono muovere loro tutte le accuse del caso, quanto ad anacronismo, ma i Thanatos a queste accuse rispondono direttamente sul campo, sfoderando le loro armi migliori: un buon gusto per il riffing ed una carica infinita dal punto di vista ritmico. Non mancano episodi più rallentati e massicci (The Devil’s Triangle, Apostles of Damnation), come pure dei dirompenti omaggi a maestri del genere come Massacre o Dark Angel, oppure ancora canzoni la cui veemenza sembra quasi travalicare i confini del genere come nel caso di Upwards Spiritual Evolution.

Tutto questo fa di Justified Genocide un disco, finalmente, in grado di innalzarsi due spanne al di sopra della media delle uscite del genere e, in ultima analisi, un buon disco di thrash metal seppure venti e passa anni dopo. Gli appassionati, che fino ad ora hanno assistito ad un infinito saccheggio dei classici da parte di musicisti poco ispirati, sono avvertiti: queste sono note per le loro orecchie.

Leute, nehmt Euch in Acht! Hollands Death-Metal-Pioniere wollen’s noch mal wissen. Nicht Kapellen wie ASPHYX, GOREFEST oder PESTILENCE, auch die ollen THANATOS - denen ja, obwohl sie als eine der ältesten niederländischen Extrem-Kapellen überhaupt gelten, nie so wirklich der große Durchbruch beschert worden ist – haben eine neue Scheibe am Start.

Gleich beim Opener stellt die Band eindrucksvoll unter Beweis, dass hier keine kleinen Jungs unangemessen lautstark vor sich hin randalieren, sondern dass hier ein paar gestandene Recken mal eben zeigen, was geht: Fette Death-Metal-Gitarren, treibende Drums, heisere Vocals (gewissermaßen eine etwas weniger kranke Variante von Martin van Drunen), geschickte Breaks, hier ein paar Thrash-Anleihen, da mal ein fast schon SAVATAGE-mäßiges-Solo. So soll das sein.

Leider flacht die Scheibe nach dem grandiosen „The Netherworld“ und der durchaus soliden Version von MASSACREs „Dawn Of Eternity“ (die allerdings nicht an die Magie des Originals herankommt) ein wenig ab. „Aposites Of Damnation“ ist schlichtweg langweilig und das abschließende „Burning Of Sodom“ ist eine völlig uninspiriert runtergeholperte Version des DARK ANGEL-Klassikers, das hätte man sich wirklich sparen können.

Nichts desto trotz, für Anhänger der nicht-BRUTAL-Death-Metal-Fraktion ein schönes Teil. Check It Out!

Actually, Thanatos has nothing in common with hardcore bands or the hardcore scene. Nevertheless, the guys from Deity Down were so friendly to send us a copy of the latest achievement of these guys. It's not just a record, actually this is the 25th jubilee of Thanatos. They had to work hard for it though. Justified Genocide was already finished in 2006, but they encountered a ridiculous amount of bad luck and troubles with labels. Luckily for the old school metalheads out there Thanatos found a solid partner in Deity Down.

It would have been a shame if this album would've never seen the daylight. This is an excellent album for anyone who likes some straight forward death / thrash metal. You know the names, Kreator, Slayer, Obituary, etc etc. Justified Genocide carries the best trademarks of the genre. Not too much little fantasies but an album driven by aggression and with great respect for tradition. A song like The Netherworld is just amazing. Several layers, creating a dark atmosphere, but they never lose that raw brutality. This album is really justified by a clear but heavy production. Great job by Excess Studio for the recordings and Dan Swanö for the mixing and mastering.

The lyrics are all about different sorts of genocide, even alien genocides. In order to avoid being branded as a nazi band they included an explination sheet. However, I feel if you read the lyrics with a critic mind, you would never mistake these guys for nazis. Hell, everyone gets a piece of it on Justified Genocide.

Thanatos is een oudegediende binnen de Nederlandse death metal scene en draait alweer 25 jaar mee (een pauze van enkele jaren buiten beschouwing gelaten). Tot mijn schaamte moet ik bekennen dat ik me nooit echt verdiept heb in deze band. Na het horen van Justified Genocide moet ik dan ook met schaamrood op mijn kaken toegeven dat ik al die jaren een bijzonder gave band links heb laten liggen.

Met Justified Genocide levert Thanatos namelijk een death/thrash plaat van jewelste af. Als men één woord zou moeten noemen om de plaat te omschrijven zou dat ‘intens’ moeten zijn, aangezien de luisteraar een waar spervuur aan zagende riffs, jankende solo’s en pompende drums te verduren krijgt. Luister alleen al maar eens naar nummers als opener They Feed On Fear, March Of The Infidels of het allesvernietigende The Netherworld. Ook de gevarieerde vocalen van gitarist/zanger Stephan Gebédi zijn bijzonder geslaagd te noemen.

Op Justified Genocide weet Thanatos een sterke synthese te creëeren tussen thrash en death metal, die liefhebbers van beide genres zal moeten aanspreken. Mede door de ietwat machinale productie gunt Thanatos de luisteraar nauwelijks rustpunten is de kans vrij groot dat je trommelvliezen binnenstebuiten staan na een luisterbeurt op gepast volume. Topplaat!

The return CD from long running thrash/death metal band Thanatos, from the Netherlands. Fantastic sound with speed changes, intelligent music and a perfect blend of growls, shrieks and snarls for vocals. By the beginning of the third track, 'Devils Triangle', you know that this CD is something special. Each track hits you in the face, but leaves you smiling and asking for more.

The guitar work is incredible and adds strength and depth to this CD. Many bands can play fast, many can play heavy, but few can play those both well. This band is one of them.

Track 7 is a cover of Massacre's 'Dawn of Eternity' which the band does a good job on. Another cover is track 11, which is Dark Angel's 'The Burning of Sodom'.

The rest of the CD is awesome and well worth picking up. if you haven't heard of Thanatos before, you should have. And now that you have, pick up 'Justified Genocide' and enjoy.
