underground Death metal takipçileri belki bilirler. Grubumuz Hollandalı
Victimizer. Grubu kısaca tanıtmak gerekirse 1996 da kurulmuş 97'de
self-released olarak ilk demolarını piyasaya sürmüşler uzun bir aranın ardından
2003 ve 2007 de yine self-released olarak sunulmuş eserleri mevcut. Fakat asıl
yükseliş dönemi sanırım kritiğini yaptığım bu sene Deity Down Records'dan
çıkardıkları mixini ve masteringini Dan Swanö 'nun üstlendiği Tales of loss and
new found serenity albümüdür.
Şarkılar çok sağlam, hızlı ve sert. Tarzları için extreme death metal desem
yeridir. Sound ve kayıt gayet temiz ve güçlü. Eğer promosyonu da sağlam
tutarlarsa iyi bir yerlere gelebilirler .Fakat tarz konusunda kendine has bir
şey yakalayamamışlar bu da grubun eksisidir ve kolay kolay diğer grupların
arasından sıyrılamazlar diye düşünüyorum. Görsellik konusunda da başarılılar,
grubun tarzına yakışacak sadelikteler. Özellikle albüm kapağı ve logo,
Firiklerin hikayelerini anlatan bir formatta. Herkesin dinleyebileceği bir grup
desem yalan olur. Decide, Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus gibi grupların
müziğinden hoşlananlar için tavsiye edebileceğim bir grup. Albümde dikkati
çeken parçalar Reunited for eternity,Past the eulogy ve Feeding the rats.

Ist das Krach ? – Nein, es ist
Musik, hört genau hin.
Victimizer
bieten hier eine fantastische Mischung aus Death Metal, der seine Einflüsse
sicher nicht zu verleugnen weiß, dabei aber etwas komplett eigenständiges auf
die Beine stellt.
Merkwürdig
das ich von dieser Band bisher noch überhaupt nichts mitbekommen habe, doch
Victimizer sind da, in meinem CD-Spieler und rocken die Wohnung. Wahrscheinlich
rocken sie noch viel mehr wenn man sie mal Live erlebt, wahrscheinlich.
Victimizer,
die aus den Niederlande kommen, spielen und bieten hier eine Mischung aus
Death, Black und Thrash Metal, also insgesamt eine Mischung aus harten Metal.
Wobei sie nicht in Versuchung geführt werden und nicht auf den derzeit
angesagten Metalcore-Zug aufspringen.
Tales Of
Loss And New Found Serenity ist ihr erstes Album welches sie über ein
Plattenfirma rausbringen, die drei Alben davor waren alle im Eigenvertrieb.
Langsam haben sie sich hochgearbeitet, wie es scheint, doch der Sound klingt so
als wären sie schon seit den neunzigern im Death Metal Geschäft mit dabei. Es
klingt frisch, dabei aber auch Old School und das alles ohne direkt zu kopieren
und langweilig zu wirken.
Das
Album, welches hier acht Songs bietet, rockt einfach nur, ohne irgendwie stumpf
oder altbacken zu klingen.
Mein Fazit: Victimizer
haben hier ein ganz starkes Album abgeliefert das mich einfach überzeugt. Es
ist zwar ein wenig kurz, doch es wird nie kurzweilig, da einfach
abwechslungsreiche Songs geboten werden, die zwar hart rocken, aber doch immer
wieder mal auflockernde Elemente bieten.
Wer auf
guten Death Metal steht der sollte auf jeden Fall mal bei Victimizer aus den
Niederlande vorbeisehen und reinhören.

Genre defying death metal from The Netherlands. Combining death
metal with elements of other metal genres, the band have created an interesting
mixture on this album. Brutal, powerful and yet melodic, Niels' vocals
perfectly accent the chaos of the band.
Blistering solos add additional flavor to the mix as the rest of
the band pummels the listener into submission. Stand out tracks on this CD are
"Feeding the Rats" and "For What Matters Now." Check out
the latter in this raw live footage:

Victimizer bestaat al sinds 1996
en dat is zeker te horen en te zien op het podium, waar de band absoluut het
best tot zijn recht komt. Zoals zo vaak was het in het begin van het bestaan
een komen en gaan van bandleden. En ook bij Victimizer leek het vinden van de
juiste vocalist de doorslag te geven. Hoewel in 2003 al een eerste volledige cd
Divided As One wordt uitgebracht, gaat het spel pas echt op de wagen in 2005
met het vinden van brulboei Niels. Eind 2007 moet de band nog een laatste
serieuze hobbel overwinnen: gitarist en mede-oprichter Sacha moet na een zwaar
ongeval afhaken. Maar het sterkt de Victimizer familie dat ze ook deze
tegenslag te boven weten te komen. Het gaat te ver om een opsomming te geven
van bekende vaderlandse en buitenlands bands met wie zij inmiddels het podium
hebben gedeeld, dat geeft echter wel aan dat Victimizer een graag geziene gast
is op de Nederlandse podia. En dat is ook niet vreemd: met hun brute muziek en
presentatie weten ze het publiek vanaf de eerste tonen bij de strot te grijpen
en de aandacht vast te houden door een energieke show voor te schotelen. Inmiddels
heeft de band getekend bij het Nederlandse label Deity Down Records (op 1
december 2009) en is de tijd rijp voor het eerste wapenfeit van die
samenwerking: Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity.
En hoewel al geconstateerd is dat, naar mijn mening dan toch in elk geval, de
pluspunten van de band op het podium liggen, weet ik ook uit eigen waarneming,
moet ik me hier toch maar even concentreren op deze cd. Natuurlijk rost
Victimizer ook op schijf als de spreekwoordelijke tiet. De stijl van de band
mag inmiddels wel bekend verondersteld worden: een mix van death en black
metal, vooral beďnvloed door de Scandinavische voorbeelden uit de jaren 90. De
basis is altijd snel, strak en bruut, zowel de drums als de snaren kunnen
behoorlijke snelheden aan. Daar overheen de brute strot van Niels, aangevuld
met de achtergrond screams van bassist Chris. Dat laatste zorgt net voor wat
extra's, het geeft de vocalen wat meer diepte.
Na het sfeervolle intro van opener For What Matters Now gaat het dan direct
los. Het razendsnelle ritme zet eigenlijk wel de toon voor het album, en o, wat
een strakke band! Met een speelduur van zo'n 46 minuten verdeeld over acht
titels kun je je voorstellen dat die acht nummers er niet uitsluitend op volle
snelheid doorheen gejast worden. Het gaspedaal wordt door Victimizer niet
constant ingetrapt, de meeste nummers kennen midtempo stukken die voor de
broodnodige variatie zorgen. Veel nummers kennen wel een redelijk soortgelijke
opbouw, meestal wordt er gekozen voor een wat bedaarder begin, om daarna pas op
volle snelheid door te trekken.
Het lijkt lastig om binnen dit beperkte stramien voor voldoende variatie te
zorgen, maar dat gaat Victimizer nog niet eens zo slecht af. Bovendien is de
muziek op zich al interessant genoeg om niet te vervelen. Daarvoor zorgen in
ieder geval de al eerder genoemde vocale invulling, maar ook afwisselende
drumbeats en de overwegend snelle gitaarriffs hebben de luisteraar aardig wat
te bieden. En dan heb ik het nog niet eens gehad over de in dit genre toch niet
heel gebruikelijke gitaarsolo's, die mogen er echt wel wezen. Speciale aandacht
wil ik nog vragen voor Reunited For Eternity; de acht minuten durende afsluiter
valt bijna te beschouwen als de epic van Tales of Loss and New Found Serenity.
In tegenstelling tot al het brute geweld dat de luisteraar eerder op deze cd al
te verwerken heeft gekregen, valt dit nummer haast een fraai luisterliedje te
noemen. Een waardig einde van deze cd.

Das noch recht jünge und kleine
Label aus unserem Nachbarländle "Niederlande" hat ja die ein oder
andere Perle in der Muschel und auch mit "Victimizer" macht man nicht
viel verkehrt, auch wenn man mit den ganz Großen des Geschäfts noch nicht
mithalten kann. Überwiegend kümmert man sich um Bands aus dem eigenen Land und
dementsprechend stammt die Band natürlich auch aus der Niederlande, genauer
gesagt aus Nijmegen. Neu ist die Combo auch nicht, sondern agiert und musiziert
bereits seit 1996. In den Anfangstagen zockte man auch gleich mit Bands wie
Disharmonic Orchestra, Asphyx, Altar etc. Nach einigen Besetzungswechsel
scheint man jetzt ein stabiles Line-up gefunden zu haben und veröffentlicht das
zweite Full-Length Album. Das die Burschen schon länger im Geschäft sind ( u.a.
zwei Members von Toxocara) hört man an der intrumentiellen Fraktion. Das
Quintett weiß, wie man die Instrumente bedient und zaubert so einen Cocktail
aus Death Metal, Thrash Metal und Black Metal, wobei man sich überwiegend in
den schnelleren Gefilden befindet, aber auch Melodien mit einbaut, die aber
leider nicht immer so richtig zünden. So knüppelt man sich recht geil durch 8
Songs, wobei der Opener"For what matters now" das absolute Highlight
des Albums darstellt. Die Mischung der drei Stile gelingt aber durchaus, aber
teilweise klingt man zu verspielt, als ob man zu viele Ideen hätte. Die Songs
sind jetzt nicht bis zum Anschlag zugepflastert mit Riffs,aber sehr kompakt.
Trotzdem macht das zuhören durchaus Spaß und Songs wie "For what matters
now", "Bodhi`s Lyric" oder " Left unsung" gehen ins
Mark. Die Songs selber sind mir dann mit 5 bzw. 6 Minuten auch zu lang, aber
auch darüber kann man hinwegsehen, denn sie warten immer wieder mit guten Riffs
auf und der wechselnde Gsang (Growls und Screams ) klingt richtig geil. Aber
Vorsicht, nicht mit den Dänen oder Amis verwechseln, hier handelt es sich um
Holländer. Hört unbedingt mal rein.

…still with a bitter
taste after my last review, it’s time to turn the page and well…what a better
way than having fucking killer album release?...it’s time to talk about Dutch
maniacs Victimizer and their second Full length album…brilliant by the
way & called “Tales of Loss & New Found Serenity” brought
courtesy of always sick label Deity Down Records from Holland too.
Musically the
approach of these “fellas” is a straight forward skull crushing type of Death
Metal build with the mix of certain devilish & furious fast parts along
with mid tempo heavy passages that make their sound so twisted & creepy.
The guitars function
is basically a continuous deliverance of malevolence through pretty intricate
riffing attack along with a murderous and heavy bass contribution. So in
chords…these guys are “fucking flying” so high. But then we have the drumming
performance…shit…this can’t be more death metal…I mean…the patterns and the
breaks make you think on Krisium…maybe Immolation…you know, that type of dude
that is capable of passing from one tempo to another without the most minimum
problem…by the way, the way double blast is performed is simply great.
What about the vocals
department?…well…these are pretty much in the Dutch school…kind of what you
find with Altar on “Provoke” album…something very aggressive, not extremely
growled and sick enough to advice this is pure fucking death metal…
At this point you can
realize that if you see this album, you should get it right now, …the sound is
really good…several times better than their previews work, so there’s not much
to say except go & get it because this is the type of release that I will
be listening to during several days…yeap!!!

liefhebbers daarvan opgelet!! In het rijtje Zanger Rinus, Sieneke, Stef Ekkel, Roef
en Marjan en De Beste Woonwagen hits is er weer een nieuw talentje uit ons
eigen land wat zeker de aandacht van TV Oranje verdient. Wellicht dat er iets
te veel gitaar gebruik in zit voor de gemiddelde TV-Oranje fan, maar ach, dan
leren ze tenminste eens fatsoenlijke muziek kennen op die kutzender! Jawel,
waar Nederland overloopt van matige gothic bandjes en walgelijke woonwagen
muziek grossiert het landje ook in goede death metal. Altar, God Dethroned,
HDK, Hail Of Bullets en The Lucifer Principle, en zet vanaf nu het Nijmeegse
Victimizer ook gerust in dit rijtje.
Het tweede album van deze Geldersche jongens heet
‘Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity’ en zit ramvol keiharde death metal. Het tempo
is over het algemeen hoog tot zeer hoog, maar er is ondanks de furieuze
snelheid genoeg ruimte voor melodie en afwisseling. Natuurlijk zijn er legio
andere bands die dit doen, maar Vicitimizer weet intens, bruut en agressief te
zijn zonder de essentie van muziek, gevoel, uit het oog te verliezen. Ook weet
men heerlijk pakkende nummers neer te zetten die zich snel met hun scherpe
haken in je hoofd vastzetten. Een goed voorbeeld van heerlijke agressie
gecombineerd met bruutheid en melodie is het gruwelijke ‘Feeding The Rats’ waar
ook nog een zeer behoorlijke gitaarsolo in zit. Hoogtepunt van de CD is echter
het fantastische ‘Reunited For Eternity’ en dan met name vanaf ongeveer 01:30.
In één woord magistraal! Wat een compositie! En de buren weten het nu ook. Het
is een mengeling van ongetemde snelheid, melodie, emotie, grunts, screams en
gevoel wat op zo’n ellendige manier gekanaliseerd is dat ik er gewoon niet
lekker van wordt. Waar vele bands snelheid gebruiken om de snelheid lijkt het
bij dit nummer een niet te vermijden natuurlijk gevolg van de muziek. Als de
lawine die het Oostenrijkse Galtür verwoestte.
Dan kan ik er nog bij zeggen dat de productie dik
in orde is en je dit album op een fatsoenlijke installatie moet luisteren, want
op een gare laptop komt er niet uit wat er uit zou moeten komen. Dit is
verplichte aanschaf voor fans van extreme metal, geen gezeik met downloaden,
gewoon kopen! Verwar deze band niet met het Duitse/Deense Victimizer, want dat
is echt heel wat anders. Ik kon helaas alleen live beelden op Youtube/MySpace
vinden. Hecht daar niet te veel waarde aan, want ze doen geen recht aan de
kwaliteit van dit album. Ze treden binnenkort op in Steenwijk, Groesbeek,
Woerden, Arnhem en Eindhoven. Zorg dat je erbij bent! Ik zet gauw TV-Oranje op,
in afwachting van hun eerste clip.

are well known for many mediocre Gothic metal acts, but for good death metal
acts as well. Most fans of extreme metal know acts like Altar, God Dethroned,
HDK, Hail Of Bullets and The Lucifer Principle. The Nijmegen death metal act
Victimizer can be added to this impressive list without hesitation.
The second full-length album of these guys is
called ‘Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity’ and has become a very nasty
brutal thing. Containing very brutal death metal, the pace is high, even very
high, but despite the hellish speed, melody and variation are abundant. Of
course, there are many acts who perform melodic death metal, but Vicitimizer
knows how to be intense, brutal, agressive without neglecting the most import
element of music: emotion. The songs on this album all have these catching
parts that are engraved in your head immediately. An example of utter brutality
combined with emotion and agression is the horrifying song ‘Feeding The Rats’
which contains a descent guitar solo as well. However, the apotheosis of this
album is ‘Reunited For Eternity’, especially from about 01:30. This is an
outstanding killer. My neighbours can sing along by now. It is a symbiosis of
melody, high pace, agression, grunts, screams and emotion that is canalised is
such a manner that it makes me feel uneasy. Many acts use speed just for speed,
but the rising pace in this song seems to be a natural evolving proces which
cannot be stopped, like the avalanche that destroyed the Austrian village of
Galtür.
The sound of the
album is very good, but you need to try it on a descent stereo, laptop sound is
really not good enough for this album. Every fan of extreme metal should buy
this album, and I mean BUY, not download. Make sure you have the right
Victimizer, because there is a German/Danish act that sounds really different.
Unfortunately, I could only find live images on YouTube or MySpace. Don’t let
these trouble your judgement, the album is much better. Enjoy!

ans que VICTIMIZER distille
son Death Metal frappé par le sceaux de la brutalité. Et en 2010, ce n’est que
le deuxičme album du groupe Néerlandais, Tales Of
Loss And New Found Serenity, que DEITY DOWN RECORDS
s’appręte ŕ vous proposer. Resté confidentiel jusque lŕ le groupe est ŕ la
croisée d’un CANNIBAL
CORPSE et d’un DEICIDE avec
quelques mélodies et solos de guitare empruntés au Black Metal, un cocktail
explosif qui prend forme ŕ travers 8 titres sévčrement burnés. L’introduction
d’un "Left Unsing" fait penser ŕ DEICIDE, une
rythmique dure et Old-School avec une mélodie ŕ la guitare plus moderne comme
les Américains ont pu le faire sur les récents albums (‘Till Death Do Us
Part par
exemple), la voix de Niels FEEKES prend
d’ailleurs un chemin similaire alors que la paire de gratteux assure des
backing vocals rageurs, on peut en dire autant ŕ propos de "A Psalm To The
Fallen" ou de "Past The Eulogy". Mais les Néerlandais lorgnent
également du côté de DYING FETUS que ce
soit sur les mélodies ou sur les parties Brutal Death particuličrement
violentes. Tales Of
Loss And New Found Serenity est le premier album signé par un label et les
gaillards s’en sortent plutôt bien en ce qui concerne la production, les
guitares sont un peu brouillonnes dans les rythmiques mais cet album bénéficie
d’un son assez lourd pour mettre en valeur le Death lourd tout comme le jeu de
batterie deRomeo GERRITS dont le jeu de cymbale mérite une attention
particuličre. Sans laisser un souvenir impérissable dans la mémoire des initiés
cet album a au moins le mérite de porter l’étendard du Death avec fierté. Le
groupe clôt cet album avec "Reunited For Eternity", un titre long de
8 minutes plus ambiant et mélodique laissant derričre lui une mélodie sucrée ŕ
la guitare, comme un espoir aprčs tant de noirceur.

Come ogni rosa ha almeno una
spina, il successo, a volte, č pagato a caro prezzo.
Č il caso degli olandesi Victimizer che, durante il tour (assieme
a Dead Squad e Apocrypha) promozionale dell’EP “The Spiral Down” (2007), si
sono improvvisamente trovati senza il chitarrista/cantante e membro fondatore
Sacha Soute a causa di un grave trauma subito alla testa.
Senza perdersi d’animo, gli altri quattro componenti della band hanno
rimpiazzato lo sfortunato musicista con Andrew van der Schaft, proveniente dai
Septuagint; riuscendo pertanto a realizzare, quest’anno, il tanto sognato primo
full-length, “Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity”,
con una label professionale del settore (nel 2003 il gruppo diede alle stampe
l’album “Divide As One”, ma autoprodotto).
Tanta dedizione, tanta passione, tanta determinazione hanno fatto maturare
degli ottimi frutti: “Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity” č una violentissima
bastonata sonora sulle reni. Un furibondo incrocio black/death/thrash che
ciascuno puň interpretare come meglio crede, talmente sono diluiti
omogeneamente, tali generi.
Attenzione perň: lo stile dei Nostri č perfettamente formato, maturo e
personale. Dovendo essere demandata alla sensibilitŕ personale di chi ascolta,
la scelta del genere cui inserire il quintetto di Nijmegen – a mio parere –
cade nel death. Ortodosso, intransigente anzi quasi old school. Si sentono
benissimo le primigenie, antiche radici che assorbono dai Possessed zolfo e
veleno. Del resto, la formazione dell’act risale nel 1996, quando il death non
aveva ancora intrapreso con decisione le tante strade cui si trova adesso
(technical, melodic, brutal, etc. …).
Come logica conseguenza, questa volontŕ di proporre sonoritŕ sě moderne ma dal
groove datato non puň regalare nulla d’innovativo. Se perň si ama quel mood
tenebroso che ha permeato, come unico comune denominatore, i generi estremi
della seconda metŕ degli anni ’80, non si potrŕ non alzare il volume e
squassare l’atmosfera con le terribili bordate scaturite da song quali “Feeding
The Rats”, “Past The Eulogy” o l’opener “For What Matters
Now”, con cui la forza dei blast-beats fa raggiungere i neurodeliri figli
degli scellerati Bulldozer. Ottimi i cambi di tempo operati dal potente Romeo
Gerrits: non sono nulla di trascendentale essendo invece dannatamente efficaci.
Monumentale il guitarwork della terribile coppia Sastra/van der Schaft capace,
anche, di ardite dissertazioni melodiche (“A-Psalm To The Fallen”).
Devastanti pure i mid-tempo (sic!), come quello di “Bodhi’s Lyric”,
sicuro rasaerba in sede live, trascinato per la collottola dalla furia di Niels
Feekes cui, penso, sanguino sin le tonsille a causa dello sforzo per l’erculea,
blasfema unione growl/scream vomitata sul microfono.
Troppo spesso, secondo il sottoscritto, ci si dimentica che il metal – e in
particolare il death – č caratterizzato in primis dalla forza delle
emozioni che scaturiscono vibrando assieme alla massima potenza sonora generata
dalla strumentazione/amplificazione elettrica. Imbrigliata come meglio si crede
in ambiti circoscritti per poterla gestire, ma comunque tale da demolire i
timpani a coloro che non sono cosě adusi al genere estremo. Apologia della
furia cieca, insomma.
Se si prende ciň, come principale parametro di giudizio per il lavoro dei
Victimizer, allora ci siamo.

I think that all you
readers can't take me seriously anymore after this review (that is if you still
did). You all have to think that I'm a big jingo, when I'm so
extremely positive about a Dutch death metal release again. Sorry,
but I can't help it, it is a very good album and believe me this has
nothing to do with my origin. 'Tales of Loss and New Found Serenity' is a
real hammer. I have to give the band a very big compliment for not throwing
the towel in the ring after the major set back they suffered when founding
member Sacha was hospitalized back in 2007 due to a major head trauma.
Sacha had to step back from the band he created and the thing he loved
most, playing in Victimizer.
In Niels Feekes (Toxocara) they found a new
vocalist and with Romeo Gerrits (also Toxocara) they found a drummer. The
new album was recorded at Split Second Sound in Amsterdam and with Dan
Swano mixing and mastering the album at Unisound in Sweden,
and the album has an excellent sound. It is brutal, powerful and melodic.
The album starts with the last song Sacha had worked on: "For What Matters
Now", this must be very special for the band and it is an ode to
Sacha. The next two songs are as strong as the first one and the solo in
"Feeding the Rats" is one of the better ones I have heard lately. The
drums are very tight and superb in a kind of Immolation style. Romeo
changes easily from fast to slower rhythms and you almost get
the idea that he has 3 arms and legs. Did I already mention that the
guitar riffs are murderous?
New singer Niels has a real Dutch-school sound,
very aggressive, but not extremely grunted, even without the lyric sheet
you should understand them. After the self released debut 'Divided as
One' (2003) and the 'The Spiral Down' EP (2007), it was a very clever
decision for the Deity Down Records label to sign them. This album can
compete with every new international death metal release and I hope that it
will be picked up by many death metal fans abroad. The band deserves
it! Two thumbs up for Victimizer!

If you mix Old School Death Metal with the
more mainstream Black Metal and spice it up with a bit of Thrash you get VICTIMIZER. The mixture of the styles is a pleasant
blueprint both on paper and reality. Triggered blastbeat drums topped with
riffy guitar harmonies and a real Old School Death Metal voice. Yes, “Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity”is a pleasant trip between the different
worlds but it’s not much more than that.
In the promo-sheet it’s mentioned that VICTIMIZER were
voted best band in the Nijmegen talent
show and listening to this album that’s no surprise. Even if the competition
was a decade ago and the album does sound really good most things are done by
the book. Chugga-chugga riffs, fast one string melody riffs and a slightly dis-harmonic
twin guitar as the peak of creativity. The production is clear and modern,
still with at least a bit of dynamism. Not as compressed and adjusted as many
other bands today and that is a plus. Guitarists Richard
Sastra and Andrew van der Schaft have
created a really forceful effect with the twin guitars, the different parts
creates depth in the music.
Describing what can be heard on “Tales Of
Loss And New Found Serenity” sounds good too but after a few spins it doesn’t feel
interesting anymore. This is not a record that grows for every spin is way too
adjusted and cleaned up for my taste. All kinds of brutal music should be a
blow to the head played loud, most of the time triggered kicks sound more
“pfft” than bombastic, and this album sure is one of those cases. It all lacks
the umph! When everything is molded in the same shapes and nothing stands out
it doesn’t matter how perfect you play, after a few spins the record will leave
the mind blank. So even if it’s possible to check all boxes on what a cool band
and record should contain, VICTIMIZER just ends up in the endless pile of similar bands.

Sonderlich
vielschichtig ist die Musik von Victimizer ja nicht. Aber das ist nicht im
Geringsten ein Problem, denn die eine Klangwand die sie aufbauen, strotzt nur
so von genialem Death Metal. Sehr energiegeladen und meist auch sehr einfallsreich
wird von Anfang an auf Höchstgeschwindigkeit losgetrommelt. Zusammen mit
dynamischen, oft schön melodischen Gitarren machen sich Victimizer sehr elegant
auf die Fahrt durch ihre Täler der Heiterkeit, stocken im Mittelteil ihrer
Fahrt ein wenig und setzen zum Ende noch einmal auf volle Leistung. Ein wenig
verwunderlich ist, dass sie diesen vierten Output das erste Mal über ein Label
veröffentlichen. Um ausnahmsweise auch Anspieltipps zu nennen: „A Psalm For The
Fallen" und „Bodhi´s Lyric" – reinhören, überrascht sein und den Rest
holen!

Geheimtipp aus dem Land der Windmühlen
Die Band Victimizer dürfte bis zum heutigem Tage hauptsächlich solchen Metalheads ein
Begriff sein, die sich aufmerksam dem europäischem Untergrund der metallischen
Musikszene widmen. Dabei sind unsere holländischen Nachbarn aus dem schönen
Nijmegen alles andere als Newcomer, denn sie ziehen nun schon seit Anno 1996 um
die Häuser und können sich somit getrost als Live-Veteranen bezeichnen. Doch in
der Bandgeschichte von Victimizer gab es bislang schon mehr als nur den ein oder anderen Stolperstein,
so sorgte zum Beispiel das sich ständig ändernde Line-Up dafür, dass im
Bandkatalog neben der EP „The Spiral Down“ mit „Divided As One“ nur ein
einziger Langspieler zu finden ist, der im Jahr 2003 in Eigenregie
herausgebracht wurde. Hinzu kam der unfreiwillige Ausstieg von Band-Urgestein
Sacha durch Krankheit. Doch nun soll sich alles ändern, denn mit Deity Down
Records im Rücken wird nun endlich wieder ein vollwertiges Album an den Start
gebracht, dass das Durchhaltevermögen der Holländer belohnen soll.
Getauft wurde die Scheibe auf den
treffenden Namen „Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity“ und die legt auch
direkt mit dem ersten Stück „For What Matters Now“ knallharte Blastbeats
und finsteren Gitarren auf die Bretter, gestützt durch tiefe Growls. Verfeinert
wird das ganze durch dezente melodische Momente. Dass die Jungs aber Zeitweise
auch mal im Stampfenden Mid-Tempo grooven können und hier und dort auch mal
bittersüße Leads über den apokalyptischen Klangteppich zaubern, zeigt sich dann
im nächsten Song-Duo mit „A Psalm To The Fallen“ und „Bodhi's Lyric“. Generell
lässt sich der Sound der Herren aus dem Land der Windmühlen als fulminante
Schmelze aus geknüppelten Ami-Death und europäischen Melodic Black Metal
beschreiben, als würde hier Cannibal Corpse auf Dark Funeral treffen und das auch noch mit
sauguter Produktion für ein Indie-Label. Das durch messerscharfes Riffing und
einem sahnigem Solo begeisternde „Feeding The Rats“ liefert dann auch gleich
einen der absoluten Höhepunkte. Das Niveau bleibt auch über die nächsten Songs
durchgängig hoch, während „Left Unsung“ mit düsteren Leads den Gänsehautfaktor
mit sich bringt und „Past The Eulogy“ mit vielschichtigen Breaks aufwartet. „To
Preserve From Precipice“ gewinnt durch wechselwirkende Stanpfbeats und schwarze
Blast-Einlagen, bevor dann das achtminütige „Reunited For Eternity“ den Deckel
draufsetzt. Betrachtet man das Ganze allerdings als Gesamtbild, so muss man
leider Feststellen, das die Vocals wenig abwechslungsreich sind, denn der
Sänger hat scheinbar nur zwei Tonlagen, und dass kein Song wirklich anders oder
innovativer Daherkommt als seine Kollegen. So richtig kann man das einer Death
Metal Band aber auch nicht vorhalten.
„Tales Of Loss And New Found
Serenity“ ist ein richtig gutes Stück extremer Musik und beweist eindrucksvoll,
dass im Untergrund noch das ein oder andere Juwel lungert. Der brachiale und
trotzdem melodiöse Mix der härtesten Gangart zündet von der ersten Minute an
und die geringen Abzüge für Vocals und einen Hauch zu viel Geradlinigkeit
trüben das Endprodukt nur minimal. Mit acht Punkten sind Victimizer gut
dabei.

VICTIMIZER
est un groupe hollandais qui existe déjŕ depuis 14 ans. Mais chose bizarre,
"Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity" est seulement leur second
album et le premier signé sur un label, en l'occurrence ici l'excellent Deity
Down. Bon, avouons tout de suite que le death présenté par VICTIMIZER n'a rien
de novateur. Mais il a quand męme la qualité d'ętre honnęte. A la croisée entre
DEICIDE et CANNIBAL CORPSE, la musique de ce quatuor lorgne męme parfois du
côté de DYING FETUS sur certains passage plus brutal death. On peut męme y
retrouver certaines mélodies guitaristiques empruntes au black. Le groupe a su
untiliser ses influences old school en y insufflant des éléments résolument
plus modernes.
Les rythmiques sont dures, parfois un peu brouillonnes, mais les morceaux sont
sévčrement burnés. Reste aussi deux points trčs positifs, ŕ savoir le jeu de
cymbales du batteur Romeo Gerrits, tout simplement époustoufflant, ainsi que le
soutien des deux guitaristes pour des backing vocaux rageurs. L'album se
termine sur "Reunited For Eternity", un titre de huit minutes plus
ambient et mélodique. Un titre inattendu mais qui fait du bien aprčs tant de
riffs relevés.
Un disque qui ne marquera peut-ętre pas les esprits mais qui aura au moins
comme mérite de proposer un death vachement bien foutu.

verzieken ze ons gehoor met rauwe death metal. Na hun eerste –onder eigen
beheer- uitgebrachte demoDevicderin hebben ze tot Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity alles onder eigen beheer uitgebracht,
waaronder hun eerste full length Divided As One in
2003. Nu ze een contract hebben bij Deity Down Records is de productie mijlen
ver vooruit gegaan en presenteren zij ons nu hun tweede full length album tot Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity.
Na een heerlijk
sfeervolle opener For What Matters Now knalt het direct los met keiharde
death metal, er is ook maar een algemene snelheid op dit album te ontdekken,
namelijk: razend snel! Gelukkig is er naast deze snelheid ook nog ruimte voor
melodie en afwisseling. Je zou dus kunnen zeggen dat de muzikale benadering van
deze gasten botbrekend is.
Op dit album
wordt het gaspedaal wel een paar keer losgelaten, hierdoor ontstaat er midtempo
stukken die ons de ruimte geven om de oortjes iets te laten rusten. De nummers
worden over het algemeen hetzelfde opgebouwd, het begint redelijk rustig –voor Victimizer’s doen
– en ontlaad zich dan in een razend tempo naar diverse agressieve riffs,
magistrale solo’s en snelheden die leiden naar een knallende climax. Een goed
voorbeeld van zo’n nummer is Feeding the Rats en Reunited For Eternity. Ze bevatten beide een
geweldige compositie.
In de
drumstukken hoor ik regelmatig patronen en breaks die mij sterk doen denken aan
die van Krisium en Immolation. De drummer haalt met zijn voeten
ongekende snelheden die hij vaak ook afwisselt zonder enige moeite! De vocalen
zijn ongekend en typisch death metal geďnspireerd. Ik kan me geen betere
vocalist wensen voor deze band. Over de sound en de opnames heb ik ook niet
veel te klagen, deze zijn clean en sterk. Maar wat wil je ook, met niemand
minder dan Dan Swanö achter de knoppen?
Ik kan kort zijn over dit album: het
is sterk, bruut en agressief met vele muzikale hoogstandjes. Nu het album
afgelopen is, heb ik zelf ook weer tijd om even bij te komen van de snelheid,
voor ik dit album opnieuw aanzet.

Music: Victimizer: Tales of Loss and New Found Serenity
Our Take
When you
read the title of this review, you might be as confused as I was. You see, I
just reviewed the final EP from Denmark thrash metal band Victimizer a month or
so ago and yet in my inbox was another album with the Victimizer name. As is
turns out, this is an entirely different band from the Netherlands that has
been around longer than their Danish counterpart and play death metal. Their
newest full length Tales of Loss and New Found Serenity was released on Deity
Down Records earlier this month and has the riffs and energy needed to make the
band worth your time.
The instrumentals
on Tales of Loss and New Found Serenity may not be that different from the cleanly
produced death metal that has gained popularity in recent years but the riffs
are good enough that they make Victimizer memorable. By inserting some melodic
death metal touches into their traditional death metal sound, the band has
written some songs that really grab listeners and keeps them coming back.
Listening to a track such as “A Psalm to the Fallen” will reveal where the
group’s strengths lie, as the melodic leads in songs like this are great and
make the material distinguishable. However, there is one area where the group
does falter and this is when they slow the tempo down. Sometimes when
Victimizer chooses to slow things down to a mid-tempo they lose some of their
momentum and intensity, and while this isn’t that big of an issue the group should
keep it in mind in the future.
Vocalist
Niels Feekes has an aggressive growl that reminds me slightly of bands such as
Hail of Bullets and Gorefest. While Feekes doesn’t always hit the guttural
ranges that the singers of those acts do but he does sound downright menacing
and never lets up for the entire time the album lasts. There are some backing
vocals added on a few of the songs which hit some higher ranges, but for the
majority of the album the group chooses to stay with the tried and true growling.
For what it lacks in variety, this decision to stick with the same vocal style
throughout gives Feekes the chance to really make his growls as loud as
possible and gives the lyrics the chance to really expand topics instead of
sticking with tried and true ideas.
I would
like to see Victimizer work on their slower paced sections a bit, but as a
whole I enjoyed this release and was impressed by this group. I didn’t mention
this earlier, but despite being around for so long this is their first full
length that has been given major distribution by a label so hopefully it gives
them a chance to get their name out there and make some new fans. If you like
death metal, Tales of Loss and New Found Serenity is an album you should pay
attention to.

Er zullen heel wat mensen op de nieuwe plaat van Victimizer hebben zitten wachten. De band moet
live een energieke en zeer strakke puinhoop creëeren en de kunst is natuurlijk
om dat ook op een album voor elkaar te krijgen. Tales of Loss and New Found
Serenity, zo heet 'ie. Here we go.
Op deze langspeler krijg je als luisteraar een gevarieerde pot
death metal in je strot geschoven. Meedogenloos is de band eigenlijk continu,
maar men wil nog wel eens veranderen tussen melodie en gewoonweg rechttoe
rechtaan beuken tot alles verwoest is. Zo is er toch een verschil tussen een
track als A Psalm To The
Fallen wat opvalt door het
melodieuze (en overigens steengoede) leadwerk en bijvoorbeeld het
verpletterende Past To Eulogy,
wat eerder opvalt door de thrashy passages, dubbele vocalen en toch (maar in
mindere mate) een dosis snijdend leadwerk. De brullende grunt van zanger Niels
maakt het geheel een stuk energieker, dit omdat hij relatief verstaanbaar is,
en dat komt het overzicht natuurlijk ook wel ten goede.
Productioneel is dit tot in de puntjes uitgewerkt zonder dat het zo’n
plastic sound heeft meegekregen. Victimizer is een band die met dit album écht is
gaan meetellen in de Nederlandse death metal-scene, en dat ligt voornamelijk
aan de zeer energieke uitvoering. Hier mogen we trots op zijn. Ik houd de
concertenlijst van deze mannen in de gaten. Aanrader!

Die Niederländer Victimizer haben nach
einem Demo, der ersten Scheibe Devided As One (2003) und der 2007er EP The
Spiral Down einen Vertrag mit Deity Down ergattert. Zeit für brutalen Death
Metal, der sich nicht nur über Geschwindigkeit definiert. Der Opener "For
What Matters Now" belegt eine fesche Death/Thrash-Schlagseite. So kennt
man eine Rifffolge von den Niedersachsen Dew-scented und ihrem Killersong "Soul
Poison". Das ist kein schlechter Vergleich. Die Melodien wildern tief im
brach hinterlassenen Dissection-Feld
der frühen 90er Jahre. Ja hallo, sind hier die legitimen Nachfolger am Werk?
Die Vergleiche zu der schwedischen
Institution im Gitarrenbereich drängen sich auch im weiteren Verlauf der Platte
förmlich auf. "A Psalm To The Fallen" möge als weiteres Beispiel
dienlich sein. Dazu Blast as Blast can. Nein, nicht der nukleare Blast, nicht
vom Wind verblasen, nein, sondern die hyperschnelle Snare- und Bassdrumbearbeitung
des Fellwerkers sind hier gemeint. Das reizt der Drummer bei Wunsch bis zum
Anschlag aus und leider ermüden einige Passagen damit rasch. Jeder Song bekommt
sein Geblaste. Trotzdem ist es kein klassischer Brutal Death, wie ihn Hate
Eternal oder deutsche
Kapellen wie Defloration oder Fearer (RIP) runterprügeln, dafür
sind die Sixstrings zu melodisch ausgelegt. "To Preserve From
Precipice" belegt diese These vortrefflich. Breaks mit kurzen groovigen
Parts geben sich mit Dauergeballer die Klinke in die Hand. Dazu growlt Frontsau
Niels Feekes als gäbe es keinen Morgen mehr. Nichts für zartbesaitete Gemüter,
aber eben noch ein Stück vom Brutal Death Metal made in USA weg.
Dissection-Jünger,
die sich The Somberlain und natürlich Storm Of The Light's Bane zu ihrer
täglichen Überlebensdosis einpfeifen, müssen ihre Öhrchen spitzen und tragen
die Scheibe mit genüsslicher Vorfreude nach Hause. Zuhause gibt es dann kein
Halten mehr und man bangt sich das verballerte Köpfchen vom Rumpf. Roh, fies
und dennoch mit galanten Melodien versehen. Ein Spagat, der hier vollkommen
treffsicher gelingt. Für Genrefans ist Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity ein
unbedingtes Muss in der Sammlung, alle anderen Extremmetaller sollten zumindest
mal reinhören.

Les Hollandais de VICTIMIZER (ŕ ne pas confondre avec leurs
collčgues Danois du męme nom), aprčs presque quinze années d’existence, nous
reviennent sur le devant de la scčne avec leur deuxičme album : Ť tales of loss
and new found serenity ť.
Succédant ŕ un Ť devided as one ť un tant soit peu mitigé, le groupe s’est
offert les services d’un nouveau vocaliste, s’est trouvé une maison de disque
et a fait appel ŕ Monsieur Swanö himself pour se charger du son du nouveau
bébé!
Les changements opérés sont bien évidement bénéfiques et il est certain que la
nouvelle mouture VICTIMIZER devrait faire son effet dans la sphčre du
death-metal.
Tout en gardant suffisamment de mélodie, les compositions du groupe sont
brutales, rapides et l’on discerne une touche brutal-death proche de celle de
NILE (en moins chaotique) ou ANGEL CORPSE.
Tous les ingrédients qui font le charme du brutoool-death sont ici réunis :
blast-beats omniprésents et jeu de batterie vraiment audacieux et riche ;
Growls maîtrisés comme il se doit ; Guitares grasses et suintantes ŕ la
ENTOMBED ; grosse basse ronflante…
Le combo dispose de l’artillerie nécessaire pour faire secouer la tignasse et
calmer les plus récalcitrants d’entre vous. Tout amateur de death devrait y
trouver son compte, que ce soit les férus du death old-school européen (façon
GOREFEST, DISMEMBER…) ou les accros de sonorités plus typées grind (ŕ la DYING
FETUS et consorts).
Bien sűr, le groupe ne se démarque pas des références citées précédemment et
n’offre pas une grande originalité et il manque parfois de contraste (dommage
car VICTIMIZER est au meilleur lorsqu’il aborde des parties mid-tempo comme le
terrible final Ť reunited for eternity ť), mais finalement l’album est
suffisamment bandant.
Quant ŕ la production, celle-ci renforce ŕ merveille l’effet dévastateur du
projet. Du tout bon!

So richtig von Erfolg
gekrönt war die Geschichte von VICTIMIZER bisher ja nicht. Die
niederländische Böllertruppe wurde bereits 1996 gegründet, hat aber vor 2002
nie wirklich was veröffentlicht. Seither gab es dann insgesamt ein Demo (2002),
das Debütalbum von 2003 und eine EP (2007), die allesamt in Eigenproduktion
erschienen. Eigentlich ein Jammer, wenn man das zweite Album “Tales Of Loss
And New Found Serenity” anhört, das nun glücklicherweise über Deity
Dawn Records erschienen ist. Denn die gute dreiviertel Stunde der
Langrille ist brutaler, wie gleichzeitig auch griffiger und stellenweise
atmosphärischer Krach von hoher Qualität!
Direkt der Opener “For What Matters Now” brettert so derb aus den
Boxen, wie er auch mit seinem catchy Leadgitarren im Gehör bleibt. Viele
Grundideen könnten locker von Hate Eternal stammen, werden
aber immer wieder durch melodische Leads, Soli und Klangteppiche der Marke Dissection
zu einer sehr eigenständigen Mischung erweitert. An manchen Stellen klingen
vielleicht auch Einflüsse von Suffocation oder Dark
Funeral durch, wie die Mischung aus Brutal Death Metal mit
eingängiger, melodischer Seite heute immer einen leichten Decrepit
Birth-Beigeschmack hat. Doch insgesamt haben sich VICTIMIZER
ein nettes, eigenes Süppchen gekocht, das eigentlich keiner Vergleiche bedarf
um sofort zu zünden und auf lange Zeit zu fesseln!
Durch die fast schon gegenläufigen Komponenten aus brutaler Härte, mitreißendem
Groove und bittersüßen Melodien gestalten sich die Lieder auf “Tales Of
Loss And New Found Serenity” entsprechend abwechslungsreich. Vom epischen
“Reunited For Eternity” (acht Minuten lang) mit geilem (fast schon
Blues-artigen) Vibe, der direkt in den Nacken geht über die thrashende Walze “To
Preserve From Percipice” (mit Suffocation Touch) zum
brutalen “Left Unsung” oder dem eher rockigen “Feeding The Rats“,
das leider nicht ganz auf der Höhe der anderen Lieder spielt, liefern VICTIMIZER
eine wirklich breite Palette ab, die ein kleines Fest für den Fan von brutalen
aber melodischem Death Metal bietet!
Hoffentlich bekommt die Truppe die Aufmerksamkeit, die sie verdient und braucht
bis zur nächsten Scheibe nicht wieder 7 Jahre!

I might own more than just a few CDs in Death
Metal and consider myself quite knowledgeable, I had never even heard of Victimizer from the Netherlands. To be even totally
honest, I thought we were dealing with the Thrash Black band from Denmark with
whom they share the same patronymics.
I researched the net for some more clues and found
out that Victimizer share two
members with the more known (that’s all relative now I guess) Toxocara,
another Dutch Death Metal act. I saw that they lost a member due to a serious
head injury but yet decided to keep on playing. I'm not in these guys' heads
but somehow I feel that this loss has transpired in these new songs found in
their sophomore release “Tales of Loss and
New Found Serenity”.
The material here is very dark, brutal and yet
melodic most especially in these nostalgia-ridden guitar soli. This is not
Death Metal for the sake of playing Brootal stuff. It’s more of the introvert
stuff though it still keeps the momentum high enough to enable some furious
headbanging.
I’ve read other reviews of this album (well, you
know, the research…) and I found that most reviewers were frankly lost when
trying to compare Victimizer’s
to other acts. In most cases, they just didn’t mention anything (I’m sure their
readers will appreciate…) or were just bullshitting… Did I read Cannibal Corpse somewhere?
Haha, what a joke. I’m not saying I’m omniscient or that kind of pretentious
bullshitting but I feel like Victimizer’s
music is best described as Ulcerate and Lost Soul going
melodic at times. Long circumvallated structures with almost crying guitars…
that very mix of brutal and melodic made me think of Polish act Repossession or
Spain's Banished From Inferno but also
another Dutch act named Prima-Nocte in that ability to blend crushing material
laden with emotions. The production is almost too flawless to be true but
considering that Swano and Unisound studios took a part in the mastering of the
record, in the end it’s no big surprise.
How much of these “emotions” is due to the loss of
a former member, I wouldn’t know personally but the overall “doom” ambience and
the titles of most songs (Reunited for Eternity, Past the Eulogy or A Psalm to the Fallen)
have, I may assume, had to do with this previous loss. Though it’s always hard
to deal with such pain, it turns out that you’re being served with an atypical
Death Metal record worth the money you’ll spend on buying it. Most assuredly
also, the lack of coverage they suffered from with their debut release will be
a thing of the past and Victimizer will be a
name to be remembered for in the very near future.

seiner Kellerstimme. Wohlgemerkt: keine Kellnerstimme! Eine Kellerstimme! Im
Keller ist es zudem oft dunkel. Manchmal sind da Leichen drin. Derart geprägt
konnte Niels nicht anders und muss einfach bei ner Death Metal-Kapelle
“singen“.
Und weil’s im Keller schon mal gruselig ist, hat
Niels oft was gepfiffen, um sich ein wenig Mut zu machen. Deswegen “singt“ er
auch in einer melodisch veranlagten Band.
Ja, das wird die einzige Erklärung sein, wieso es
so gekommen ist. Kann ja gar nicht anders… Fakt ist: Der Niels hat nen heftig
dicken Hals und blökt gar prächtig zu dem nicht minder heftigen Liedgut, welches
uns die seit 1996 tätigen VICTIMIZER um die Lauscher hauen. Dabei beherrscht er
das harsche Gegrunze derart herzerweichend, dass man sich überaus glücklich
schätzen sollte, unter den grob geschätzt
neunhundertachtundvierzigmillionensiebenhundertachtzehntausendsiebenhundertundvier
Death Metal-Combos mal wieder einen anständigen Schreihals gefunden zu haben.
Das Beste aber ist, dass auch die Mucke der
Niederländer bestens zu gefallen weiß. Brutalem Amitod-Geballer wird bei einem jeden
Song eine liebliche Skandinavien-Melodei als Wegbegleiter mitgegeben, so dass
das rüpelhafte Geschrote ŕ la SUFFOCATION nicht völlig orientierungslos an des
höchst geneigten Hörers Ohren vorbeihämmert. Dabei erinnern besagte Melodien,
welche größtenteils zusammen mit der Blastkeule aus den Boxen bersten, eher an
Black Metal-Irrwitz denn an die üblichen Verdächtigen aus dem weiten Felde des
Elchtods.
Zudem groovt es an den richtigen Stellen und im
Falle der Soli verweist man auch gerne mal auf die Landsmänner von PESTILENCE.
Somit hieße es, ganz arg und böse zu lügen, stellte man es dem Fünfer in
Abrede, der Abwechslung erfreulich oft zu huldigen. VICTIMIZER sind stets
erfolgreich darum bemüht, der Monotonie keinen Fußbreit Raum zu lassen und
arrangieren ihre Songs nicht nur geschickt (“To Preserve From Precipice“),
sondern können gerade wegen der Verwendung ergreifender Melodien, auch wenn
diese zum Teil recht subtil zum Einsatz kommen (“Feeding The Rats“), eine
beachtliche Nachhaltigkeit entwickeln. Und die geht der Genre-Konkurrenz leider
viel zu oft ab. Zwar könnte der Schlachtzeuger auf so manchen Blast verzichten,
um den Groove-Faktor zu betonen und das Material hätte gerade bei den Songs,
welche die sechs-Minuten-Marke knacken, ein wenig Straffung erfahren sollen,
doch die Band hat alles in allem nicht viel falsch gemacht.
Schließlich stimmen die thrash-basierten Riffs
einfach, die der Mucke die Durchzugskraft eines alten Ami-V8 verleihen.
Überhaupt gibt es da günstige Parallelen, was den Sound angeht: es blubbert,
bollert, röhrt, kreischt und brüllt an allen Ecken und Enden. Die Produktion
schafft es überdies, alles so abzubilden, dass man sich an der
Mannschaftsleistung hinreichend ergötzen kann.
Für Freunde abwechslungsreichen Todesstahls, die es
nicht immer nur brutal, aber auch nicht zu weichgespült mögen, ist “Tales Of
Loss And New Found Serenity“ Pflicht!

Victimizer, niet te verwarren
met de Deense collega’s is een Nederlandse death metal band om U tegen te
zeggen. Terwijl het eindejaar in teken stond van een andere Nederlandse death
metal band moeten we eerlijk bekennen dat Victimizer de
hoofdprijs wegsleept.
Eerst en vooral gaat
Victimizer met de prijs voor meest originele hoes aan de haal.
Wat zegt deze hoes veel, wat beschrijft de hoes het algemene gevoel van de
muziek. Het kan niet meer stuk.
En dat kan het ook
niet meer, de muziek. Dubbele bass, blast beasts, een grunt die tegelijk
verstaanbaar is en je schoonmoeder de stuipen op het lijf jaagt. ‘Tales Of
Loss And New Found Serenity’ is een plaat die heel sterk in elkaar zit. De
combinatie van de solo en de apotheose in ‘Bodhi’s Lyric’ is een hiervan een
perfect voorbeeld. Ook van het gebruik van twee vocalen zijn ze niet vies.
Agressie en emotie zijn de twee belangrijkste zaken in de muziek van Victimizer.
En dat is nu net hun grote pluspunt !
Terwijl de
hedendaagse death metal scene alleen maar zich toespitst op techniek of
brutaliteit, durft Victimizer terug te gaan naar de essentie. Een ferme schop
in je ballen !
Conclusie: Deze death metal schijf van onze
noorderburen mag je blindelings aanschaffen.

Wow, was ein cooles Brett! Die Niederländer fusionieren Raserei
und Knüppelorgien der Marke Suffocation und Hate Eternal mit thrash-basierten Riffs
und saucoolen Melodien. Darüber wird ein stiller Hauch von Black Metal geblasen
und auch Sänger Niels driftet, obwohl er sicherlich zu der sehr harschen
Fraktion der Death Metal-Shouter gehört, nie in pure Grunzbereiche ab. Das
Victimizer trotz der Masse an Blastbeats nie langweilig werden, verdeutlicht
die außergewöhnliche Klasse von ‚Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity’. Dazu
stimmen die Soli und die kreierte Atmosphäre, da Brutalo-Attacken, gemäßigtere
Parts, Riffs und Soli als auch vordergründige und unterschwellige Melodien
gelungen miteinander verwoben sind. Es fällt mir schwer einen Song dieser
durchaus ausgewogenen Scheibe hervorzuheben, aber die Leads in ‚Bodhi’s Lyric’,
dessen Text Sänger Niels einer verstorbenen Person gewidmet hat und aus dessen
Textzeile der Titel des Albums entlehnt ist, sind alleine einen fetten
Zusatzpunkt wert. Mit ‚Tales Of…’ ist dem neuesten Deity Down-Signing

Summary: The Crown can move over this year
The Crown rubbed me the wrong way this year with their
disappointing Doomsday King, a reunion album
that came after a six-year hiatus that displayed one of the leading death/trash
acts of all time falling on their faces, with a new singer at the helm (again),
surprisingly. Like a common critic might say of the thrash genre, death/thrash
has a tendency to repeat itself, and while the Swedes were desperately trying
to avoid this by making their heaviest album yet - well, uh, let’s just say
that they just ended up sounding boring, devoid of life, and, ironically, repetitive (see review).
So hark all and read, 2010: the
death of death/thrash, at least that was my initial thought after such
bands like Yyrkoon, Deceased, and Hypnosia had long-since bit
the bullet; now the Deathrace Kings themselves were
eating crap with much of the derivative metal world as a whole. Seems this type
of music is dead, if not years earlier, and that was the consensus via me and
maybe others, too, as well. But that was until a fairly unknown band arrived
out of The Netherlands with the likes of God Dethroned to revitalize some
of the melodic death subgenre, in so doing bringing a hefty, life-saving dose
of fresh death/thrash with them: I present to you Victimizer’s sophomore
release, Tales of Loss and New Found Serenity.
Like any death/thrash album worth listening to – oh hey Crowned In Terror, As The Weird Travel On, Extreme Hatred, etc. etc. –
Victimizer's Tales of Loss hits listeners in the
face with a jackhammer of fast, hard riffs, with a powerful vocalist, in this
case by the name of Niels Feekes with his deep, powerful growl. You won’t find
better death/thrash than Tales of Loss this year in 2010, I
believe; in fact, you’re not likely to find any better going back a few years,
too. Riffs hit with powerful production values that are hard enough to shake
the ice cycles hanging from your gutters, and the melody that Feekes and crew
offer is complimentary, never overriding the aggressive nature of the music.
It’s very modern-sounding, so purists may want to
pass on Tales of Loss, sadly – but don’t let your years
of metal elitism sway you, though. Feekes has a way of tossing in his deeps
growls with the snarls and shrieks of guitarists Andrew van der Schaft and
Richard Sastra for an almost blackened-death feel, particularly on the second
half of the album. In fact, it bears mentioning that the last four tracks are
arguably the strongest, and conversely the longest, with the band using the most
of their three vocalists, as well as changing tempos and time signatures of the
music fairly often. This gives “Left Unsung” and “Past The Eulogy” the titles
of best tracks, in particular, being both varied and catchy, yet brutal and
unpredictable as well.
Although, to be fair, though, “Feed The Rats” is
not far behind those two either, with the last minute or so of its length being
the emotional high-point of the album, Feekes letting loose a blood-curdling
roar, while the Sastra and Schaft launch into a powerful guitar solo. Moments
like this and the ending finale of the longest track, “Reunited For Eternity”,
do much to give Tales of Loss character
and replayability. Yet for all their strengths, the vocalist and axe-men can’t
quite mask Victimizer’s one downfall at this point in their career: drummer
Romeo Gerrits. Throughout the album, and oddly the most on the first half,
Gerrits’ fills are disturbingly minimal when compared to the onslaught of
powerful riffs from the guitarists. Not only this, but his drumming style is
disappointingly weak and, almost, inexperienced-sounding, too.
Still, Feekes, Sastra, and Schaft are able to
carry Victimizer strongly through their sophomore album, Tales
of Loss. The riffs are hard, the solos succulent, and the death/trash is
alive and well here, mixed in with a healthy, shameless dose of melodic death
metal. This album is not one to miss metalheads, so leave some room on your
best-of lists for another addition – yes, for a death/thrash album, unlikely as
it may be. Congrats, guys. The Crown can now move over.

”Blutwurst statt Trendkost"
Knappe anderthalb
Jahrzehnte lang knüppeln die tulpenländischen VICTIMIZER schon durch die Death
Metal Szene. In dieser Zeit faulenzte man ein Demo, eine Full Length und eine
EP in die Gemeinde. Höchste Zeit also, dass sich ein professionelles Label
endlich den langsamen Visionären annahm.
Dieses hat man nun in Deity Down Records gefunden
und quasi die jahrelang angestauten Kreativitätsschnipsel auf einen Silberling
gepresst. Herausgekommen ist ein herrlich zeitloses Stück Extrem-Musik, das weder
den öden Slam- noch den blöden Frickel-Core-Trends folgt, aber dennoch
überhaupt nicht altbacken klingt. „Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity“ ist
eine Wanderung durch die sehenswertesten Landschaften der Death-, Thrash- und
Black-Metal-Gefilde, wobei die Todesblei-Kunst definitiv die erste Geige
spielt. Besonders schön ist die Tatsache, dass die Herren ihr Augenmerk auf
echte Songs und effizient killende Riffs und Licks legen. Die Album-Highlights
„A Psalm To The Fallen“ und „Left Unsung“ sprechen hier Bände. Auch der Mut zu
elaborierten Gitarren-Soli darf beklatscht werden, wenn man in dieser Beziehung
auch manchmal ein wenig auf die Bremse hätte treten und den einen oder anderen
Platzhalter-Ton hätte vermeiden dürfen.
Aber egal, VICTIMIZER blasten dort, wo sie fix
sein müssen, und grooven da, wo die Matte kreisen sollte. Dass ihnen klare
Grenzen scheißegal sind und sie sich mal an KATAKLYSM und mal an EMPEROR
orientieren, macht sie umso sympathischer.
Den Sound hat man sich bei Dan Swanö veredeln
lassen, was zu einem differenzierten Klangbild geführt hat, das die technische
Klasse der Band schön unterstreicht, auch wenn ich mir den Drumsound noch etwas
knalliger gewünscht hätte.
Fazit: Eine Platte, mit der man sich lange
beschäftigen kann, ohne Langeweile zu verspüren. Brutalität und Melodik ringen
über die gesamte Distanz miteinander, ohne zu ermüden. Und das Tolle daran:
Sowohl Partybanger als auch verkopfte Fans bekommen das, wonach sie verlangen.

Deity Down, das Underground-Metal-Label der Stunde, schließt das
Jahr mit einem akustischen Feuerwerk ab, denn die fünf Niederländer von
VICTIMIZER spielen erstklassigen Tech-Metal, der in seinen sehr guten Momenten
sogar an DEATH denken lässt. Beim Shouting des zweiten Albums hingegen standen
eindeutig GOREFEST Pate. Das einzig Negative, was man anbringen könnte, ist die
Tatsache, dass während der gesamten acht Songs derart schnell gespielt wird,
dass der Groove etwas auf der Strecke bleibt. Auch beim Drumming wird dieses
manko deutlich, da könnte man mal das Tempo rausnehmen, selbst wenn die
Gitarren schnell agieren. Auf der Habenseite muss man aber die Power verbuchen,
mit der VICTIMIZER zu Werke gehen. So wird "Tales Of Loss And New Found
Serenity" ein gerne gespieltes Albem, welches zwar beim ersten Hören etwas
einseitig klingt, dafür aber wie aus einem Guss und einfach konsequent ist.
"Left Unsung", "The Eulogy" "Feeding The Rats"
und das grandiose "Reunited For Eternity" heben den Longplayer in die
erste Liga und die genannten Kritikpunkte sind folglich Disput auf höchstem
Niveau. Das Layout ist ein Hingucker, die Texte gewandt und geistreich, was im
Metal ja nicht immer der Fall ist und für den adequaten Sound sorgte der
Schwede Dan Swäno, der hier mischte und masterte. Ein echter Dauerbrenner, der
aber etwas Zeit braucht und in seiner Konsequenz einfach ein ziemliches Brett
ist. Sollte man sich neben den Labelmates PERSISTENSE unbedingt zulegen!

Ja, manchmal sind
selbst wir mit unserer zweimonatigen Erscheinungsweise richtig schnell und
aktuell: Auf der Beilagen-CD von Legacy #69 durfte man Bekanntschaft mit ‘Past
The Eulogy’ der Holländer machen. Die benachbarte Tulpenrepublik war schon seit
Pestilence, Asphyx, den Grenzgängern Thanatos und zahlreichen kleineren Acts
Ende der Achtziger ein verlässlicher Lieferant für erstklassigen Death Metal in
den verschiedensten Geschmacksrichtungen. Dann kam der Doom Death-Bom und als
der längst im Gothic-Kitsch versackt war, die Kehrtwende zum oberbrutalen,
US-lastigen Zeugs von Pyaemia, Disavowed, Severe Torture und Co.. VICTIMIZER
aus Nimwegen lassen sich wie die ebenfalls großartigen The Monolith Deathcult
nicht so einfach kategorisieren und wildern in mehreren Zuchten. Sie klingen
nicht wirklich Old School, aber auf keinen Fall modern im Sinne von
Slam-meets-Geprügel. Sie sind technisch voll auf der Höhe, haben
halsbrecherische Breaks, bezaubernde bis abgedrehte Leads – halten sich aber
vom jazzigen Pestilence-Hoheitsgebiet fern. Sie verbraten thrashige Ansätze nie
so eindeutig wie Thanatos. Sie haben die Energie und die mordspfundige
Produktion, die internationalen Bestsellern im Genre wie Kataklysm spätestens
mit dem aktuellen Album abgeht. Und sie hauen immer wieder Läufe raus, die in
ihrer erhabenen, düsteren Art die Grenzen zum Black Metal einreißen. In
‚Left Unsung’ geschieht letzteres auch streckenweise gesanglich. Man merkt
einfach, dass hier erstklassige Musiker am Werk sind, die nichts überstürzt
haben. VICTIMIZER konnten sich über Jahre und mehrere Eigenproduktionen
entwickeln und gehören nicht zur immer größeren Masse an Bands, die den Markt
mit unausgegorenen Alben zutackern. Nach Expulsion und Scenario II der nächste
Tipp von drüben, der weder Käse ist, noch wässriger Treibhaustomatenmatsch.

Death metal can be a pain in the ass
and a real deal-breaker when it comes to crossover acceptance of metal. It’s
brutal, it’s convoluted, it’s –a lot of time- as unmusical as it gets, it
creates a yucky effect on people who try to “get into” metal. I mean, try to
persuade anyone who has little experience with extreme forms of music, that
metal’s good for him, by making them listen to, say “Entrails Ripped From A
Virgin’s Cunt”, or something by early Grave. See them leaving screaming and
covering their ears in terror? Well, what exactly did you expect their reaction
to be?
And, then, you got a band like
Victimizer. Coming from the land of tulips and coffee shops, Victimizer is as
death metal as it gets; but, with a twist: their songs can be easily approached
and digested by normal people. See, these guys know perfectly well how to write
good, complex songs that would make death metal aficionados proud. But, they
also know how to weave quite a bit of catchy melody into the songs’ generally
brutal and ugly fabric. This melody comes mainly in the form of wonderfully
placed guitar harmonies and leads, but the band displays an affinity for, ehm,
streamlining the songs’ form, without ever sacrificing an iota of power and
brutality.
The riffs are textbook-death metal,
but the guys in Victimizer seem to –instinctively?- know how to apply them, so
as the songs retain a constant melodic undercurrent, which makes them catchier
than all hell. Plus, the guitar harmonies are pure NWOBHM, without sounding
out of place are redundant. The production –pretty clean and punchy, with a mix
job courtesy of one Dan Swanö…- enhances the whole effect, making the record
sound lively and strong, without blurring the details of the stellar
musicianship. My only gripe comes from the drums, which sound too much
triggered for their own good, while sometimes the blasting becomes tiresome. On
the plus side, the vocals, while raspy and br00tal, never fall this side of
unintelligibility.
All in all, Victimizer offers a
pretty interesting take on death metal: ugly enough to clean the premises of
wimps, melodic enough to offer the more daring ones something that they can
relate to and enjoy. “Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity”, while not a
landmark record, is one hell of a cool listen and offers quite a bit of
interesting stuff to sink your teeth into. Good job, guys.

Die
Niederländer von „Victimizer” (bitte nicht mit den gleichnamigen Dänen
verwechseln) stellen und mit „Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity“ ihr zweites
Album vor, welches wieder gänzlich im Zeichen des klassischen Death Metal
steht.
Acht Lieder enthält dieser Silberling und bringt es damit auf eine
Gesamtlaufzeit von einer knappen Dreiviertelstunde. Aufgelockert wird diese
Zeitspanne durch schöne Gitarrenriffs, flotte Drums und fetziges Geballer. Der
Gesang ist weitestgehend gegrowle, wobei manchmal Gerneuntypisches Gekrächze
das Mikro übernimmt, wie bei dem Track „To Preserve From Precipice“.
Viel Wert wird zudem auf einen ordentlichen Groove gelegt, einige Parts gehen
ins Ohr und lassen einen nicht mehr richtig los.
Zugegeben: Die Lieder von „Victimizer“ sind kein Weltklasse Niveau, aber
Brecher wie „Past The Eulogy“, oder High Speed Gedresche wie „A Psalm To The
Fallen“ kommt immer gut und lässt sich durchaus mal hören.
Zudem sind die Lieder so gestaltet, dass einem nicht nach einem Durchlauf des
Albums langweilig wird und man die CD so durchaus mehrfach hören kann.
Wirkliche Hänger beinhaltet „Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity” zum Glück
nicht, eher ist es „Victimizer“ gelungen, ein stimmiges, nicht allzu langes,
Gesamtwerk abzuliefern, an dem Deathmetal Fans ihren Spaß haben dürften.
Allerdings bleiben neben den Tiefpunkten auch die wirklichen Höhepunkte aus,
dennoch möchte ich, neben den bereits genannten Liedern, noch „Bodhi's Lyric“
hervorheben, welches gekonnt alle Stärken der Niederländer aufzeigt.
Hier wird noch einmal nach Herzenslaune die Gitarre geschreddert und der Groove
vorangetrieben. Müsste ich einen Anspieltipp nennen, so wäre es wohl dieser
Track.

Fazit:

Mustern entfernt?
Nun, die gute Nachricht ist, dass „Victimizers“ zweites Album für euch
definitiv interessant sein könnte.
Die schlechte Nachricht ist, dass man nicht allzu viel erwarten sollte von
„Tales Of Loss And New Found Serenity”, denn mehr als grundsolide Kost, die
kurzweiligen Spaß bietet, wird hier nicht geboten.
Was bleibt ist ein Album, dem ich drei Sterne gebe, weil es für Gerneveteranen
durchaus interessant sein kann, aber für Neulinge durchaus bessere Alternativen
existieren.

A holland Victimizer idén rakta le második
nagylemezét, mely az első valóban beszerezhető és professzionális munka tőlük,
amúgy a gelderlandi horda 1996-ban alakult, 2002-ben egy demót, majd 2003-ban
egy nagylemezt, illetve négy évvel rá egy kislemezt passzítottak össze, de
minden anyagjuk szerzői kiadás, így tehát a szintén holland Deity Down Recordsgyakorlatilag
végre elérhetővé tette a dolgot. Az öreg Gerard mindig is tudta mitől döglik a
légy igazán, így tehát sem a borítóval, sem pedig a hangzással (Dan Swanö keze munkája) nem kell
szégyenkeznie a death metal csapatnak. Nekem igazán a booklet tetszett, régen
láttam ennyire jól összerakott és egységes szövegkönyvet, minden elismerésem Richard Spierings-nek, hiszen mesteri a végeredmény,
nos a sok dicséret mellett akkor talán valamit a zenéről is…
…kellene írnom, s mily meglepő, de muzikálisan is tökéletesen teljesít a Victimizer - teszem hozzá, több ilyen nevű
banda is van. Szóval, ha még nem esett le; ők a holland death brigád! Az a
fajta death metal ez, melyben nem a komplex témák, és jól összerakott riffek
határozzák meg a nyomvonalat, hihetetlenül igényesek a szólók, s némileg svéd
hatásokat kelt a dolog. Nekem több helyen is beugrott az At The Gates neve, de a Sinister vagy Suffocation féle formációké is. A helyzet az, hogy
a brutális csépelésekből csodálatos szólók emelkednek ki, s telis-tele van
érzelmekkel a Tales Of Loss
And New Found Serenity, ezek a halmazok a gyűlölet, harag, megvetéstől a
keserűségig és mélységekig szakad, feltépve számtalan régi sebet, a fortyogó
testek vértől ázva lehajtott fejjel fúródnak bele a kitaposott földbe. A zenei
összkép technikás csapatot mutat, amiben néhol a thrash is érezhető a vokál
pedig viszonylag sok részen egészül ki károgással a mély hörgés mellett –
gyilkos egy páros; a nóták nagy része több témából áll össze, s vissza-visszatér
a közben fejlődő ágakhoz, melyektől még inkább erősebb és magával ragadóbb
lesz, természetesen ehhez a professzionális hangzás is hozzá járul, de ahogy
mondani szokás; hiába szép a lány, ha teste fonnyadt – mindenek meg kell adni a
maga módját. Mellesleg némi változás is történt a fedélzeten, hiszen Arnold Oude Middendorpaz új énekes, akit egyesek ismernek talán
a szintén Deity Down Records-os Devious formációból, nem is beszélve a
kultikus holland thrash-death bagázsról, az Altar-ról,
melynek volt frontembere Arnold-unk
(mellesleg jegyzem meg annak, akit érdekel, hogy már korábban is terveztem
interjút az említett csapattal, most legalább Gerard-on
keresztül véghez is viszem, egy volt taggal, haha).
Mivel is zárhatnék egy ennyire érett és jól összerakott lemezkritika végét? Felvethetném az egyediség kérdését, amely természetesen nem szeplőtlen fogantatást takarna, de ilyen teljesítmény után az ember nem a hatásokat keresi, hanem elveszik a komplex muzsikában, a professzionális kivitelezésben és a hihetetlenül szép szólókban, melyekről nekem a szintén holland Pestilence jutott eszembe. Mondanom se kell, a pubokban tea és kávé mellé némi vidámságot is betekerhető nemzet szülötteiről, avagy a Victimizer társaságáról még hallani fogunk a jövőben. Hogy miért? Mert sajt, de kibaszott erős és cipős, ínyenc és csak sok kenyérrel fogyasztható…
